Ho would you describe your body How typ type? My frame is small and my body type is petite so finding my size typ ca be a challenge at times. can Ha your body type changed over Has th the last five years? My body type has remained M th the same over the years but I’ve de definitely noticed a slight change w with yoga and soft cardio. You to up and evolve mentally, tone sp and emotionally. And spiritually n beats that! nothing H How has your style changed over t years? the S Style is visual therapy for me, I love experimenting with d looks and am not one different t shy away from bold colours, to textures or prints and hence my personal style keeps evolving with time. I love how Pakistani culture is so opulent and regal and that is reflected in our embroidery techniques, silhouettes and craftsmanship. Having said that, I do believe I stay true to my inherent style- which is elegance over trends. I’m more individualistic as compared to trendy and a ‘less is more’ kind of person, so my style reflects that. In your opinion what is your most troublesome area? When Karachi’s humidity wreaks havoc in my hair! I think the issue I face (and a lot of girls might agree with me) is when your hair constantly needs upkeep in coastal areas like Karachi. How do you dress your body according to your body type? I have an unhealthy obsession with stilettos and tailored jackets. I prefer a streamlined silhouette, but I like to be comfortable at the same time. I wear a lot of tailored trousers with a wide leg, prefer tailored shirts over tees and don’t like large handbags. I have a lean frame so I sometimes choose shirts with lots of upper play, volume and can also go in the other direction and opt for a completely streamlined look. In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here? Although style is individualistic and to each

their own, one big mistake people make is over accessorising and wearing too many labels at once, looking like a shop. Too many labels and loud make-up is a big no. Which silhouettes suit your body the most? I mix and match my silhouettes due to my small frame. For all the petite frames out there — wear streamlined silhouettes and don’t shroud your frame in baggy clothing. These days I also love monochromes and colour blocking. What is the one piece of clothing you shy away from wearing and why? Revealing, skin-baring clothing and plunging necklines, I steer clear of those. A bold lip and flashy earrings do it for me..

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY WITH AMNA AND MAHRUKH AHMER

Best friends and sisters, Amna Ahmar, a dermatologist and Mahrukh Ahmer, a make-up artist talk sisterhood. From travelling to Las Vegas together, to their childhood antics, these sisters share it all

What’s your first memory of each other? Mahrukh: I have lots of memories of us but the one that made me cry the most was when she told me our parents picked me from the bin and I still smelled like garbage. Amna: I was 10 years old when Mahrukh was born I remember holding her right when she was born. She was a tiny baby and I helped Mama bathe her for the first time. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Mahrukh: So many crazy sleepovers after she got married! Once she came over to our mum’s place after her second baby was born and we snuck out and had a crazy time. Amna: Well we have been to Vegas together! Let your imagination run wild (haha). What did you get punished for the most as a child? Mahrukh: I don’t remember ever being punished. I was a good child or maybe my parents were too lenient. Amna: For not taking Mahrukh with me to my friend’s gatherings and now we hardly hangout without each other. If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Mahrukh: Her white culottes maybe. They’re always with me and I hardly give her a chance to wear them! SEPTEMBER 33-99 2017

44

Amna: Her fluffy dog-faced room slippers! What is the one thing you love about your sibling? Mahrukh: She is always nice to everyone and is an n angel in front of all the elders. Amna: She is always there for me. I sometimes take her for granted especially when it comes to g babysitting. She makes my life so simple by taking care of my kids. She would do anything for me. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Mahrukh: We never fight! Even if we did, we woulld just talk it out and make it up to each other. Amna: It’s absurd — we have never fought. I don’tt kh recall any fights at all. The only complaint Mahruk k has is that our parents love me more. I don’t think that is even close to being true, she’s their baby girrl. u What is the one secret talent your sibling has, that you wish you did too? Mahrukh: She is always just nice to everyone. Amna: Mahrukh has a very daring personality. She h has self-confidence and that makes her shine. She believes in herself and keeps improving every day. I have se een her evolve from a baby to a grown up professiional in the span of a few years. Describ be your sibling in three words: Mahru ukh: Hard working, soft hearted, sensitiive. Amna a: Loving, professional and courageous. Which h fictional character is your sibling most like? Mah hrukh: Alice in Wonderland. Amn na: Cat Woman. How w are your personalities similar? Ma ahrukh: We have opposite personalities and that’s why we get along so well! Am mna: Well we are truly opposites! I’m a ge eek and she’s a fashionista! I can’t c live without my sister because M Mahrukh: I cannot live without her because she’s my life saver. She has b always had my back no matter what! a Amna: She helps me keep a balance in my life. After work, she is my entertainment. She keeps me alive and young. We can’t sleep without gossiping about the day.

LIFESTYLE

THE NOTEPAD Celebrity stylist and fashionista, Amal Qadri gives away six styling tips that she follows to make sure she’s on top of her styling game Body Type It’s very important to know your body type as it really helps in figuring out what kind of styles and silhouettes will make you look good.

Staple wardrobe items Always have your basics right! I believe in having tank tops in black, white and nude. It’s also wise to invest in black, white and beige pants, again according to your body type. Same goes for shameezz and shalwarr or pants if you prefer eastern attire.

Find your signature style There should be one kind of outfit, makeup and hair style that you surely know you look amazing in and if you don’t have one, take out time and find the right one that can be used for any occasion and ask a friend or relative who always gives you the right suggestions.

Day to night make-up There are times we’re busy at work or with our kids and really get no time to change our make-up. So I usually make sure I have the right lipstick shade, an eyeliner (not the liquid one, I use pencil just in case I can’t make the line perfect, I can smudge it and make my eyes look smoky!) and of course mascara.

Bag it up You should definitely have a great day bag that looks great, has character and suits your personal style. Invest in a bag that goes with most of your day to day wardrobes so it can be used to the max.

Less is more I really believe in this term and follow this myself too. I make sure if I’m wearing a statement necklace on a simple outfit then I’ll add a dramatic bag or shoe but if my outfit is dramatic on its own then I’ll try to keep my accessories to a minimum. Make sure to balance it out. SEPTEMBER 3-9 2017

BEAUTY

Exclusive make-up artist Amina Raja has 12 years’ experience in the beauty industry and works tirelessly out of her boutique studio based in Lahore. We speak to her about her favourite looks, trending beauty techniques and beauty regimes to keep your skin feeling young and fresh all season long!

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other make-up artists? That would be my dramatic and shimmery eye make-up looks and most of all, my famous dewy look. I was the first one to use designer foundations according to skin type and am known for setting them in a way that they stay for long hours on a bride; making her look radiant and glowy. What sets me apart is the soft and natural make-up we use, and yet the total transformation we achieve without photo shopping. Our make-up speaks for itself! Our brides glow in real life just like in reel life! What do you love most about make-up? Being able to create beauty! Bringing out the best in my clients, looks they have never gotten and seeing the gleam in their eyes and that smile that follows the minute you finish their look! What are the three tools in your make-up kit that you can never be without? Concealer, kohl, and my favourite lipstick; Saint Germain by MAC. One great make-up tip: Clean your skin! Also always apply foundation in layers and wait for it to set, and be sure to never over powder. What are some common beauty mistakes that women make? Applying false eyelashes in a way that makes your eyes droop. It’s a common mistake that is made often and can make or break your look. Another bad

SEPTEMBER 3-9 2017

62

mistake is using the wrong shade of foundation. What products do you think should be a staple in every woman’s purse? A BB and CC cream, quick fix concealer, and a beautiful lipstick. What are the popular beauty trends this season? My favourite black smoky eyes with nude lips are the hottest this season! If you could only use two make-up items to get ready for an event, what would they be? Concealer and kohl.

Your recommendation for the best foundation, eye liner and blush? I love Estée Lauder foundations, they’re my alltime favourite! But you have to choose the right one between double wear and maximum cover. Chanel’s eyeliners are the best and my favourite blush is orgasm by Nars!!

What lipstick shade is a must for this season? Black berry and Material girl by Huda Beauty. Which celebrity would you want to do a makeover on? Aishwarya Rai. A make-up artist that inspires you: Mickey Contractor. Do you listen to your client’s suggestions when doing their make-up or trust your craft? A mixture of both.
