How did you decide to become a model? I’d always been told by a lot of people to go for modelling because I’m almost 6 feet tall. I always thought modelling could be something I could do on the side, but never thought of it as a full time job. My life changed for the best when Tabesh Khoja discovered me back in 2015 and asked me to go for modelling. I didn’t think much of it as I was studying at the time. I took his offer two years later in November 2017, when he gave me another opportunity to join the industry. It’s been a year and a half now and it has been quite an eventful journey. Thanks to him, I feel like modelling has always been my calling.
Any hidden talent/talents? I can act pretty well. I have a background in theatre. Biggest pet peeve? Bad breath and people who chew loudly or talk with their mouth full. Ugh. Three things you can never leave your house without? Money, my phone and my Zero Makeup Palette.
When was the last time you were really scared and why? When I was travelling in an ATR from Islamabad to Lahore and there was some major turbulence. I’d recited all of my duas because I literally thought I wasn’t going to make it out alive. I’m absolutely terrified of flying.
If you could have dinner with any person, dead or alive who would it be? Probably Drake. People who know me, know my love for him. Describe yourself in three words? Relentless, fierce and loyal.
What would be your trademark accessory?
If you had to be trapped in a TV show for a month, which one would you choose? F.R.I.E.N.D.S. If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Biryani! The most Karachi thing about me. First celebrity crush? James Spader (Alan Shore from Boston Legal).
A pair of black, reflective sunglasses. Top three favourite models? Naomi Campbell, Kendall Jenner and Joan Smalls.

Would you rather find your true love or a suitcase with five million dollars inside? A suitcase with five million dollars. I already have all the love I can possibly need and more, from my friends and family! What was the last lie you told? I told a few people that I was busy when I really wasn’t just to avoid meeting them.
If you were not a model, what would you be? A criminal defence lawyer. I grew up watching Boston Legal and I’ve always been passionate about public speaking. Who knows, maybe I’ll still pursue it later in life.
What are the three fashion trends you love at the moment? 1) Solids - I’m not a fan of prints and I love how people are moving away from anything that’s too busy or distracting. 2) All - white everything. 3) Flared wide - legged jeans and bootcut pants.
Would you rather be able to see 10 minutes into your own future or 10 minutes into the future of someone else? Neither. I love living in the oblivion.
One super power you wish to possess? Time travelling. I would love to visit the 80s!
One bad habit you want to quit but are unable to? I am a perfectionist. It has gotten to the point where it has started to annoy people around me because I try to impose my rules and restrictions on them. What’s the best and worst thing about your job? The best part would be the exposure and the fact that modelling makes you tough and you get to learn something new every single day. It has made me more patient, tolerant and passionate. The worst would be the stereotypical notoriety still attached to the industry. That’s something I’m really working to change. Here’s to hoping and praying that we all can make it happen. Cheers!

TRAVEL
Saira Mansoor, a digital content creator, filmmaker and an artist shares highlights of her recent trip to Scotland Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities on the planet. I had been curious to explore Edinburgh castle ever since I watched Reign on Netflix. I particularly enjoyed visiting the room where Queen Mary of Scots gave birth to her only son James and where she got married to her third husband James Hepburn. I stayed at Castle Rock Hostel located downhill from the castle. The atmosphere was very hospitable. The National Museum of Edinburgh, Museum of Childhood and The Elephant Café are the places you must visit if you are ever in Edinburgh. I also visited The Edinburgh Dungeon with a group of 14 people. With so many actors re-enacting scenes from the era, the whole journey through the dungeons was quite whimsical. I entered into the dark chamber of Queen Mary, sat down silently waiting for the next act when the power went out or so it seemed. The first thing I saw when it came back on was a spooky looking Mary standing right in front of my face, leaving me screaming for my life. That was a thrill of a lifetime for sure. While in Glasgow, I visited the Glasgow Church of Christ, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and The St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art which turned out to be quite a knowledgeable experience.

A true art lover at heart, Sana Khan found her true calling in designing and creating jewellery. Academically, Sana holds an MPhill from University of Cambridge and was earlier pursuing her career in Development Studies till she ea arlie er p urs decided d ecided to take the plunge and focus on her creative side. Azure is a luxe jewellery line that was launched in May 2019. Each piece is made using valuable material and crafted by the finest artisans with m gemstones that have been hand-selected to g ensure a perfect end experience. Azure quite literally means an enchanting deep blue colour. It stems from the Persian term for Lapis Lazuli, associated with a richness, depth and wisdom. The jewellery line embodies the magical nature T off the ‘azure’ in its distinctive design construct o
How and when did you become interested in jewellery? I’ve always had a penchant for the arts, fine art in particular and have enjoyed looking at and collecting jewellery pieces. At the time of my wedding, I designed a bridal set with a jeweler, which someone else saw and wanted to buy. I let them purchase it, settled on something else, and didn’t think much of it. I now realise how poignant that experience was. Some years later my nani started having jewellery exhibitions. I would help her with these while I worked full time in the development sector. Before I knew it, I found myself thinking about new designs I wanted to create to wear and showcase. I discussed starting a new line with her but sadly, she passed away. I then temporarily moved to London in 2017 and began vigorously pursuing my interest. I would attend art exhibitions, research the jewellery market, and sketch designs. Some months later I moved back to Karachi, and the grind began- I worked silently towards
building my collection. To provide technical support to this impetus, I studied Jewellery making as a course at Central Saint Martins, and the rest is as they say history. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery? My favourite piece of jewellery is the Cross-Hatch Earrings from the AZURE fine collection. They can be worn as studs or with a pearl drop for more dressy occasions. The pearl in the centre gives a glow to the complexion, whilst the diamonds dispersed against the gold cross hatch design shimmer when worn. Its beauty is encapsulated by the sophisticated finesse it gives SEPTEMBER 15-21 2019

the wearer, enhancing any and every look. h Share a story with u us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces. I wanted to create a pearl flower earring, nge layy but the challenge i ht in obtaining the right stones and figuring out the appropriate technical setting. I played with different pearl options, until I found the perfect pearl shape. There were other gemstones lying next to the pearl and I noticed an ethereal beauty of the feroza next to the pearl. One of my elderly karigars argued that this design was difficult to create and would look better with a different stone, and so I decided to make both. We experimented with various settings until we found one that worked. Once completed, he pushed forward the Azure White Champa Earrings with Turquoise. I was so pleased, with a simple gesture he acknowledged the vision of design, the beauty of the end product, and the hard work that went into it. Is there any piece you are emotionally attached to? There are so many! Over the years I have been lucky to obtain (often through ‘long term borrowing’) several jewellery pieces from my mother and maternal grandmother. If I had to shortlist it would be my pearl bangles that belonged to my nani’s mother, that my nani wore as a child in India (I luckily have thin wrists!). The other, a favourite at the moment, is an emerald and diamond ring that belonged to my godmother. This was given to my mother, and was gifted to me to celebrate the birth of my daughter.

Researchbooks, articles, exhibitions. What is your signature piece or style? Feminine, contemporary and bold. Azure celebrates the versatility of the ‘feminine’. Our design aesthetic reflects the multidimensional nature of the contemporary woman; sensual and vibrant, delicate and bold. Our designs are crafted for every look that a woman adorns, and that which sets her apart from another. Pearls play an integral role in our designs, as their organic form exudes an ethereal and unparalleled radiance when worn. What is one thing a client should keep in mind when purchasing jewellery? Buy pieces that you love. Jewellery is a form of art and you must enjoy looking at and wearing what you own. What is one jewellery trend you wish desi brides would incorporate more? I am a huge fan of traditional bridal jewellery. The teen/panch lara and
the nath are some of my favourite styles. However, other than the main weddings set, I would recommend investing in jewellery that will be worn to the array of social gatherings that occur throughout the year - from daily wear, to tea’s, dinners, parties, and wedding functions that one attends. Such pieces can be exquisitely crafted and allow for versatile usability, for decades to come. Is there anything on your radar that you want to introduce in the future? There are lots of plans for the future but it’s too early to say just yet! What’s next for Azure by Sana? Focusing on growing the business and creating more accessibility for the international customer base.

trained people who started on their fitness journey after hitting 50! The benefits of switching to a healthier lifestyle become apparent in all aspects of one’s life. What are some of the misconceptions people have about exercising? Most people and even some trainers don’t realise that training is purely based on science. Nutrition is obviously a huge factor as is common knowledge but understanding the concept of training is of utmost importance. Every training regime has a specific purpose be it gaining strength, increasing muscle mass or improving cardiovascular fitness. Most people want to change their physique but don’t train for it accordingly and are often misguided

by trainers who aren’t aware of the concepts themselves. Three things in your diet you can’t go a day without? Eggs, black coffee and yoghurt. What is the most effective exercise according to you? Focusing on the aesthetics is a priority to me so for me, nothing beats an intense aesthetic bodybuilding session in the gym. Our body is a sculpture that we need to work on every day to get it to a certain shape or size. Your favourite foods to eat on a cheat day? I have a sweet tooth so I usually go for big desserts. Something you enjoy doing when not working? Reading, playing the piano, indulging in creative videography and video games! A saying or quote that keeps you going? No retreat. No surrender.
