The photoshoot on the cover of our August 19th issue was not our initiative. It was conducted and paid for by the designer and we were unaware that it took place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. While we are not responsible for the shoot, we sincerely apologise that it hurt the religious sentiments of the Christian community. As a corrective measure, we have removed the image from our social media platforms - Editor

With

Faiza Shaikh

Faiza Shaikh is a London-based artist who is making waves with her contemporary styled artwork. With vast knowledge of technique and history of art, Faiza has decided to make her own mark in the art world

When did you first start painting? I was introduced to art from a very early age. My obsession with art continued at Fielden Park Art school in Manchester and after that, South Trafford college for textile designing and finally at St Martin’s College in London. How long have you been painting for and what makes your art standout? I have been painting for a while now and I believe my work is extremely unusual and eye catching. What drives you into creating such unique pieces? I am very unbothered by the viewer’s opinion about my artwork, which encapsulates the beauty of my work in itself. I define my own rules by living in my own world. I exist in nirvana. This is why some of my pieces are detached from the ongoing world, yet meaningful at the same time. Did you gradually work into what it is today or did you have a vision? No, I always wanted to paint philosophy, politics, poetry and Economics on canvas. So I would say yes, I had a vision. How would you describe your art as a whole? My art consists of strong bold colours, sharp contrasts and a sense of power and modernity that strikes anyone at first glance. My signature work is recognised by the use of gold and silver leaf scripted with the philosophical message and I have developed a special technique by which the canvas is converted into a luscious, rich silk and velvety texture. My work is rooted in the contemporary world. I am not unconcerned with issues of urban existence, or racial discrimination, of the disparities between the rich and poor. My paintings present a quest for

37

SEPTEMBER 2-8 2018

perfection, which takes impetus from this world without depicting its context. What are your greatest accomplishments? My greatest accomplishment would be my work being exhibited at several galleries internationally. A few of them would be 2015 Dubai Art Fair, 2014 My Art World and 2011 The Mall Galleries, London. How would you sum up your recent art show, ‘Visionary Infusions’? My solo show titled ‘Visionary Infusions’ was showcased at Gaia Fusion in Lahore, on March 15, 2018 and was curated by MyArtWorld (@myartworldpk). The show consisted of contemporary art from some of my previous collections. One of the collections came from my previous paintings consisting of dolls painted in a unique, vibrant and colourful manner. Some of the paintings consisted of nude women painted in abstract colours, and black was predominantly used for this. It was a successful show and I couldn’t be more satisfied.

BEAUTY

by Zainab Sheikh eikh

I launched Zay Beauty with the vision on of creating premium quality and easy to o use make-up products for the Pakistani market. The MOD SKOT eye shadow palette from om Zay Beauty is the most beginner friendly palette lette out there with an amazing variety of eyeshadows shadows that will help you create an endlesss array of simple to glam make-up looks. I created ated these six simple, festive looks using the Mod Skot Eye Shadow Palette

A Simple Colourful Look: I created this super simple look keeping in mind that not everyone wants to put full fledge heavy eye make-up. This look will take you no more than five minutes to complete. Steps: • Apply the shade Fatima from the palette on your brow bone and inner-third of the eyelid. • Apply the shade Mariya in the crease • Apply the shade Sara on the lid. • Apply the shade Hareem in the lower lash-line • Apply black pencil in the water line and some mascara and the look is complete.

A Universal Brown Look: This look can go with literally any outfit you wear! Steps: • Apply the shade Aisha on the brow bone and inner corner of the eye • Apply the shade Natasha in the crease. • Apply the shade Maryam all over the lid. • For the lower lash line, I took the shade Iman and smoked it out a bit to add some colour • Apply black pencil in the waterline, some mascara and lashes and the look is complete.

SEPTEMBER 2-8 2018

38

The Neutral Gold Look: This gold look is perfect for traditional outfits. I paired it up with a blood red lip but you can go with a bright pink or peach as well and it will look amazing! Steps: • Apply the shade Aisha on the brow bone and inner corner of the eye. • Apply the shade Mariya in the crease. • Apply the shade Shahida all over the lid. • Apply the shade Maryam in the outer V of the eye and blend it into the crease. • Apply the shade Maryam on the lower lash line. • Apply black pencil in the water line, eyeliner, mascara and some lashes to complete the look.

The Metallic Silver look: These metallic silver eyes are perfect to wear with darker outfits. It gives an effect of a smokey eye, but makes it subtler for the summer. Steps: • Apply the shade Fatima on the brow bone and inner corner of the eye. • Apply the shade Sara in the crease • Apply the shade Amna all over the lids • Apply the shade Zainab on the outer V of the eye and bring it in the crease. Blend it with the shade Sara. • Apply the shade Zainab on the lower lash line. • Apply a black pencil in the waterline, some mascara and lashes and the look is complete.

The Jewel Green Look: This is one of my favourite looks. The green shade from the palette called Aziza is the most wearable green you will ever find and looks amazing on every skin-tone. The pink shade called Sara and Aziza complement each other extremely well as you can see in this look. Steps: • Apply the shade Aisha on the brow bone and inner corner of the eye. • Apply the shade Anum in the crease. • Apply the shade Sara in the crease and blend it with Anum. • Apply the shade Aziza all over the lid • Use the shade Zainab as an eyeliner and smudge it to make it look soft. • Apply a black pencil in the waterline, some mascara and lashes and the look is complete.

The Warm Peach Look: Who doesn’t like peachy warm delicious eye looks right? So I obviously had to create this one. Steps: • Apply the shade Fatima on the brow bone and inner corner of the eye. • Apply the shade Amber in the outer V of the eye and also deepen the crease with it. • Apply the shade Madiha all over the lids. • Apply the shade Amber on the lower lash line. • Apply black eyeliner on the lash line, black pencil in the waterline, some mascara and lashes and the look is complete.

Pro Tips: Blend blend blend…blending is the key. Make sure there are no harsh lines in your eyeshadow application. Use the right brushes. A fluffy blending brush for crease, a synthetic flat eyeshadow brush for lids and small detailing brushes for lower lash line and outer V of the eye. You can buy the Mod Skot Eye Shadow palette from zaybeauty.com Follow their facebook and Instagram on @zayfied to checkout other looks created using this palette.

LIFE STYLE

Cyma and Najia let their imaginations run wild and followed their true calling by transforming their creativity into their eclectic and unique furniture brand ‘CyNa’. The furniture designer duo talk to us about why they became furniture designers, their influences, their style of work and everything they hope to achieve How did you get started in your career? Cyma: I had been working in the corporate sector for over 12 years with extensive travelling and in an extremely high pressure environment, which I was thoroughly enjoying at that time, but with my two girls and their busy schedules, I had to quit my high profile job. Being an MBA graduate in Marketing and a workaholic I had to put my energies in place. So once, while redesigning my own drawing room from scratch, with the support of dedicated labour the outcome turned out to be extraordinary. I wanted to do something different and was always interested in design and home décor and knew that I can come up with something which is unique and appealing to everyone. Najia: I swapped my busy career as an Accounts professional to be a stay-at-home mum. Even as a payables controller, I knew my passion lies in interior decoration. Now with time on my hands, I focused my energies to follow my true calling. Since myself and Cyma, shared a similar design philosophy, there was nothing better than to kick-start our journey as luxury furniture designers. What and/or who are some of your design inspirations? Cyma: Most Italian brands are a source of inspiration for me as they are one of a kind; their home accessories and SEPTEMBER 2-8 2018

furniture are handcrafted and polished to perfection. They team flawless exotic woods and supple leather with everything from coffee tables to photo frames, in the most refined way. Giving furniture an intriguing character is an art, and I have learnt a lot by studying the Italian interior designers and brands. Najia: Modern luxury designers like Hermes Turri and Natuzzi have always been an inspiration. However, their prices cater to a completely different market. The yearning to own such pieces and the drive to make them affordable for people like you and I is what drives CyNa. What do you like most about your job? Cyma: Using my creativity is what I love the most and the end result which is actually a piece of my imagination. To know that what we are able to make something which is not mainstream and is not readily available makes me enthusiastic about our job. Najia: Things that might seem dull to others i.e. working with numbers, managing the accounts, pricing the products is what drives me in the business. There is nothing more satisfying than closing a business deal because the pricing of the product was just right! What is most challenging about your job? Cyma: Our biggest challenge is making our team understand that meeting deadlines is very important.

41

SEPTEMBER 2-8 2018

We have never to date gone over and above our delivery date (touchwood), but how it is done, is a secret only we know. As we are expanding, the workforce is also growing. We have separate units for each work so coordinating the labour, ensuring they are streamlined with each other, dealing with their mood swings can be quite a task sometime. But as they say all is well that ends well. Najia: Yes, couldn’t agree more here with Cyma, ensuring that our team delivers on time can be quite a tiresome task. How would you describe your design style? Do you have a signature touch with your designs? Cyma: Our design styles are vibrant, trendy and things that perfectly fit in the client’s settings. That’s the beauty of our pieces. The design philosophy of CyNa is very simple; our pieces own the room whether it’s the main furniture, which is central to the space or something as simple as a lamp, end table, ottoman or even a tray. Our signature touch is that we are fearless in our approach towards bright vibrant colours that others might usually shy away from. Najia: I would want to share the same opinion as Cyma, as colour has always been the highlighting factor in our designs. Our products have always stood out for their vibrant feel.

What do you believe are the home decor/ design trends for 2018? Cyma: Bold colours, dark wood, ceiling wall papers and tropical prints are the trending things for 2018. We have already started working on them as well. Najia: Marbles, brass and tropical prints. Within your own home, what’s your next project? Cyma: My very own master bedroom is the next target. I want it to be the most comfortable room in my house, which would serve as a retreat designed to pamper ourselves. Najia: I want to create a play room for my kids at home. I have a boy and a girl that are both poles apart but I want to create a space that will excite them both and hopefully keep them busy so I can enjoy my evening cup of tea in peace! Describe yourself in three words. Cyma: Passionate, workaholic and social. Najia: Number cruncher, go-getter and contemporary. Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about? Cyma: We are based in Karachi, but have been assigned a project in Lahore, so this is our first time to prove ourselves and deliver, with the same level of proficiency all the while doing our Karachi based projects. It’s quite exciting for us and it’s opening more doors and giving us the chance to take our work to other cities in Pakistan. Najia: We have been assigned a threebedroom apartment interior project, which I’m very excited about as the client has trusted us completely to design it from scratch! What are your design dreams/goals? Cyma: To take our work internationally, to keep designing beautiful accent furniture for all spaces - be it your home, restaurant, cafe, office or school. As they say, the sky is the limit. Najia: To pair with other designers that have a similar design philosophy to change the dull repetitive furniture trends of Pakistan. SEPTEMBER 2-8 2018

IT RUNS IN THE

What’s your first memory of each other? Mahlia: Lali as a pudgy baby who loved her milk bottle, which for a time she called ‘safaid ghora’ for some inexplicable reason. Laaleen: Shushi (her Kashmiri nickname), quietly reading these kiddie books while I’d be a toddler sleeping on my parents’ round bed in their round bedroom in our mushroom shaped house. What is the craziest thing you have done together? Mahlia: Been to some crazy clubs! Laaleen: I was her chaperone and then she became mine. So we never got crazy. SEPTEMBER 2-8 2018

44

What did you get punished for the most as a child? Mahlia: Our youngest brother Harris used to spy and tattle on me to our mom. He called himself ‘Spy the Why’. Laaleen: Harris and I got away with a lot as younger children so I felt bad when Shushi was punished for dating her boyfriend and now husband Amaad. I tried to shield her all I could! If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be? Mahlia: Her great collection of corset belts. Laaleen: Ooh, that’d be her Hervé Léger bandage dress, assuming I could magically fit into a size nothing outfit! If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do? Mahlia: Exercise LOL! Laaleen: Eat loads of cheesy pasta and rich chocolatey dessert and pile on some pounds! What is the one thing you love about your sibling? Mahlia: She’s very caring, honest and witty. That’s three things though. Laaleen: She stepped in as a very young mother figure after our mother passed away and that’s why we are second mothers to each other’s children. I helped raise my nephews and she’s helping to raise her nieces. If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up? Mahlia: We fight of course but it’s over quickly. Laaleen: We never fought growing up because I’ve looked up to her all my life. Now that we’re older, we occasionally have emo outbursts. What is the one secret talent your sibling has, that you wish you did too? Mahlia: Her snappy comebacks! Laaleen: Her commitment to fitness! Describe your sibling in three words: Mahlia: Determined, generous, head in the clouds. Laaleen: Dreamy, romantic, resilient. Which fictional character is your sibling most like? Mahlia: Roya from Austenistan meets Bridget Jones and the girl-withthe-green-scarf from Confessions of a Shopaholic. Laaleen: Sweet, patient, beautiful Jane Bennet from Pride and Prejudice, but after she marries Mr Bingley, rules the roost, and acquires some sass. How are your personalities similar? Mahlia: We don’t get impressed with other people’s wealth and aren’t shady. Laaleen: We don’t have an envious bone in our bodies. I can’t live without my sister because… Mahlia: I only have the one. Laaleen: I’ve never known life without her.

Adnan Qazi, a coveted music video director and fashion photographer who has a number of stellar works to his credit, sits with us to talk about his professional journey, the key to success and his newest directorial project ‘Maula’

SEPTEMBER 2-8 2018

46

Where do you draw inspiration from? For me - life itself is an inspiration. Every day may not be good but there is good in every day. How did your career unfold? It took a lot of dreams, dedication and hard work; I believe hard work is the key to everything. We must not forget why we started.

I instantly said yes! I’ve known Farhan for a very long time and we’ve always spoken about working together so when the opportunity presented itself I knew it would work. What was the best part of 2017 for you? My directorial debut, I was given the opportunity to direct a promotional song for Arth –The Destination.

What did you enjoy the most while shooting for ‘Maula’? The shoot itself overall was a lot of fun; we all lived in one big house like a family. I had to be very strict with everyone so sometimes it felt like I was the headmaster on a school trip, but it was worth it. It was an amazing experience with lots of good memories.

Are there any exciting projects in the pipeline for you? Lots of exciting stuff, including my own film! You guys must keep an eye out.

What do you enjoy most, photography or directing? They are both very different professions but I guess filming has always been my first love and photography is something that I just happened to stumble upon. I didn’t choose the photography life; it chose me.

What do you enjoy the most about your job? The fact that my ‘job’ is something I’m highly passionate about. Not many people in this world can say they do something they love, I’m one of the few lucky ones. I wake up every morning and look forward to doing what I do best.

What has been your favourite project yet? Working on a Suzuki campaign in Spain, it was high pressure and fast – a blur in my memory but oh-so-fun! What was your favourite shooting location out for ‘Maula’? I scouted London’s trendiest spots and found this aesthetically pleasing venue ‘Morell House’ in Shoreditch. The look and vibe were perfect. In two words, how would you describe your work journey? Crazy and unexpected. If you could wish for anything that would come true, what would you wish for? Trump’s impeachment! Who is the one person you would like to work with, that you have not already? Saba Qamar, I like working with inspirational people. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in the industry? Stay focused, work hard and stay positive. What did you think of ‘Maula’ when you were first approached for the song? When I was first approached by Farhan for this song

47

SEPTEMBER 2-8 2018

What has been your personal key to success? I believe in the motto ‘work hard play hard’. I give my all at work and party just as hard.

How did ‘Maula’ move from concept to reality? After listening to the song and speaking to Farhan I immersed myself in my creative process. I saw a vision of Kiran, the song’s female lead, walking through rain and began working on a storyboard which would work well with the theme of the song. Can you describe a typical day at work? I’m a night owl, all my best creative work manifests late at night. I would say the days leading up to a shoot are late nights but once we start the physical work it’s all about the early mornings. What are some common myths or misconceptions about your profession? It’s an easy ride – trust me it is not! It takes hard work, dedication and passion. Plus a good team to work with. Is it harder to get started or keep going? Keep going, anyone can be good at the start but to keep that momentum and building takes some serious nerve and patience. How do you unwind? I love doing karaoke, I’ve been told I sing well *chuckles*, hanging out with friends and I thoroughly enjoy going to the beach, even in winter.

Mahira Khan, Bilal Ashraf to star in Momina Duraid’s next film Veteran producer Momina Duraid revealed that she has started working on her next feature film titled Superstar, starring the duo we have been waiting to see together: Mahira Khan and Bilal Ashraf. “The film went through a lot of hands. Mahira was roped in at a very early stage,” Momina told The Express Tribune. Mahira will be acting opposite Bilal who, according to Momina, fits the bill despite having had a recent lull in his career with Yalghaar and Rangreza. The Humsafar producer shared that the movie is about the world of superstars in Pakistan.

Imran Abbas among nominees for world’s ‘100 Most Handsome faces With numerous plays and dramas, handful of Bollywood projects and an upcoming Hollywood film under his belt, it is a fact that Imran Abbas has definitely managed to make an impact in showbiz. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the actor is one of the official nominees for the 100 Most Handsome Faces of 2018 by TC Candler. He has been nominated amongst the likes of actor Ryan Gosling, Amal Clooney, Ryan Reynolds, Katherine Langford, Natalie Portman and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

Chalte Chalte in the voice of Atif Aslam Music director Ghulam Mohammed’s melodious masterpiece Chalte Chalte from the film Pakeeza featuring Meena Kumari is now going to be heard in the voice of Atif Aslam. The classic has been reworked for upcoming movie Mitron starring Jackie Bhagnani and Kritika Kamra. The lyrics have been tweaked to give the song more of a romantic spin rather than that of affliction and longing. The original song features the voice of Lata Mangeshkar who is known for her soft vocals, Aslam on the other hand has a deeper voice which according to some fans does not sit right with the dulcet melody of the song.

Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor for Dostana 2? Speculations regarding a sequel to hit Bollywood film Dostana have been ongoing for years and they still haven’t ended. The 2008 film was probably the first to address the taboo topic of homosexuality, bringing it into mainstream cinema. As reported by Times Now, filmmaker Karan Johar has now allegedly finalised a script for the upcoming sequel, also roping in Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles. However Karan Johar took to Twitter to clear the air regarding the rumours. The tweet read “Hello! All news circulating about Dostana 2 is untrue! Lots of speculation which is entirely baseless!”

Sanam Saeed makes a television comeback with ‘Deedan’ After the huge success of Cake, Sanam Saeed is making her television comeback with an upcoming drama serial Deedan. Directed by Amin Iqbal Deedan is a story of two star crossed lovers from up-north with some action and a whole lot of suspense. It revolves around the northern culture and traditions, highlighting the importance of rectitude and family honour. The first look of the cover reveals a rather intense side of Sanam Saeed and her co-star Mohib Mirza. The thriller is expected to air by the end of September on APlus.

Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan among world’s highest-paid actors Bollywood superstars Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar have successfully made it to 2018’s Forbes‘ list of World’s Highest-Paid Actors.
