With

Ombré

Having studied marketing and accounting, sister duo Sana and Tanzil Amin let their creative juices flow and ventured into the world of jewellery designing. They share with us some interesting details about the exquisite jewellery inside their vault! When did you realise you wanted to pursue a career as jewellery designers? To be honest, even though we are came from marketing and accounting backgrounds, our creative bug has led us down this path of designing a bespoke jewellery line for traditional and modern women! With an undying passion for stones and hues, we started to get our creative juices flowing to create fashion jewellery designs highlighting various semi-precious stones displayed in versatile designs. As jewellery designers, we aim to create timeless pieces with a contemporary vibe. In 2015 we launched Ombré in Karachi at a private screening for family and friends. Ombré was an instant hit, and things have never been the same. We have been designing bespoke pieces for clients all over the world since. What are your favourite pieces of jewellery and where did you get them from? Our all-time favourite has got to be the firoza and pink agate gold twist wrap from our first launch. Being a versatile piece, it can be style in various ways and adds the right amount of oomph to each look. It was our best seller as it was considered a day to night statement piece among clients. The best part is pink agate is the stone that imparts courage and enhances self confidence - and that is what Ombré stands for – for the women who wear it! How do you decide what you want to create? Like designers all over the world, we take inspiration from international fashion trends, jewellery tradeshows, and personal experiences while vacationing on family trips. By continuous insight into evolving market trends and an in-depth design process with our suppliers we strive SEPTEMBER 22-28 2019

to create impeccable designs for our customers. Our trip to Turkey in 2018 was very fascinating. We saw the most exquisite stone crusted jewellery designs. This journey motivated us to create many upbeat fashion accessories and steered us towards success. Is there a piece of jewellery you are emotionally attached to and why? Yes, for sure! The kundan and baroque pearl string has a great sentimental value for us as we created it especially for our mom. It was the perfect adornment for our mother as she usually wears an abaya and the embellished neckpiece enhances the beauty of the whole attire in a modest fashion. This piece of jewellery will always stay close to our hearts as it was a positive reflection of our creativity to suit our mom’s personal style. Share a story with us about how you acquired one of your favourite pieces? Our favourite has to be ‘The Khaleesi’ neckpiece from our upcoming collection. Designing this necklace was quite a challenge as we had to blend old world charm into a fusion statement look. It is comprised of multiple components which had to cohesively work together to implement the design. We used a broad, woven, gold mesh chain as the choker and incorporated an encrusted black agate piece to strike a bold combination. To soften the look, we paired it with pastel pink stones and baroques. The finished product was overwhelming as we saw a vision turn into reality! Is there anything on your radar that you want to get or make in the future? Our focus for the future will be to showcase our brand in various platforms across evolving markets. Our brand ranges from classic must-have pieces to funky contemporary accessories. Women of today place great value on the fusion aspect of jewellery as it can be used in versatile ways. We are looking forward to incorporate mother of pearl and natural shell stones for our upcoming collection.

Table Talk with

Waza

Husband and wife, Adnan Ahmed Lone and Sehr Savul talk to us about their new restaurant Waza. Offering the taste and atmosphere of Kashmir, Waza aims to provide its patrons with an authentic Kashmiri experience. From the inspiration and popular dishes on the menu to the secret behind sustaining a restaurant, they tell us all.

fact stated that not only the food but the ambiance as well reminds them of home, which is in Srinagar.

What inspired you to open Waza’s doors to people of Lahore? The heritage and the culture of Kashmir inspired the idea of Waza. A few years ago we decided to launch a Kashmiri food restaurant here in Lahore but we wanted the food to taste as authentic as possible so we worked on getting our chefs from Srinagar and that is how Waza came about. Is Waza’s menu diverse enough to offer something to people who haven’t developed a taste for Kashmiri Food? We offer two types of menus; one is comprised of traditional Kashmiri wazan while the other offers general Pakistani cuisine. So whether you are craving an authentic Kashmiri feast or are in the mood for some curries and barbecue, Waza has got you covered. Three dishes you think everyone should try from your menu? For someone who prefers subtle flavour, we have the Ab Gosht. For people who like their food a little spicy, we have the Mirchwangan Korma. Apart from that we believe everyone should try our Mutton Payas. How would you describe Waza and its meals? Waza is a place where you can enjoy not only the subtle taste of Kashmir but the aura of it as well. Are all items prepared using authentic Kashmiri spices and recipes or did you have to tweak the recipes to localise the taste? This question was recently answered by a Kashmiri migrant family who came over to try our food. They are our regular patrons and love the food that we offer here at Waza. They have in

SEPTEMBER 22-28 2019

What is the secret behind sustaining a restaurant? As a restaurateur you must always make sure to provide your patrons with a hygienic, hospitable and a relaxing atmosphere. Apart from that, using quality ingredients for the food you serve is of utmost importance as well. We have been fortunate enough to have a team of hardworking individuals working with us, who help in keeping Waza afloat for all the right reasons. What do you consider to be the most underrated dish? We don’t think any dish should be underrated. While we love all the items on the menu, we’re also learning that no matter how hard we strive to please everyone there will always be people who simply haven’t developed the palette for the kind of food that we serve.

IT RUNS IN THE

FAMILY

Lawyer Sheikh Raza Rahman and wife Sarah Rahman share with us some endearing details of their happily married life. From never ceasing to express affection and always working as a team, this couple has it all figured out.

With

Sheikh Sarah Raza Rahman

How and where did you both first meet? Sarah: It was an arranged marriage, and we were introduced by Raza’s aunt. Raza: I first saw her at a wedding in Peshawar and then was introduced to her by my aunt. What did you like/ dislike about each other in your first meeting? Sarah: We were surrounded by so many people in our first meeting. We didn’t get a chance to talk. However, I did notice that he was extremely well dressed. Raza: She was (and is) very beautiful. However, at the same time she was very reserved. SEPTEMBER 22-28 2019

40

How long did it take to decide that he/ she was the one you wanted to marry? Sarah: Might sound weird in this day and age, but my family took the decision and I went with it. Raza: Immediately. Best leap of faith I have taken in my life. How do you demonstrate your love in different ways? Sarah: I am a very expressive person with my words. His happiness matters the most to me and I make sure he knows that. Raza: Love is something that is unconditional and is predominantly based upon being sensitive to the other person’s feelings. What frustrates you most about your partner? Sarah: He is never punctual. Also likes working from home at very odd hours, which annoys me to the limit. Raza: Her extreme obsession with cleanliness. Who makes up first if you have a fight or argument? Sarah: Always me. Raza: Mostly her (if she says so). One thing you love about each other? Sarah: How much he respects our relationship and his work ethic. Raza: She always has my back.

41

SEPTEMBER 22-28 2019

Something you would want to change about your partner? Sarah: He should have a better work-life balance and he shouldn’t overthink. Raza: She should be less trusting of people. Something you two have in common? Sarah: We are complete opposites. Raza: We are a living embodiment of the saying ‘Opposites Attract.’ Who keeps the room the tidiest? Sarah: Me. Raza: Of course her, that’s her favourite hobby. Your best memory together so far? Sarah: The birth of our daughter, Sereen. Raza: Nothing can be more special than the day that Sereen was born. Your greatest strength as a couple? Sarah: Marriage is team work. We have been through ups and downs of life together and have always come out stronger because of our trust and faith in each other. Raza: We trust each other with everything. We have the ability to understand each other’s situation or point of view without the other having to say much about it. Describe your relationship in three words? Sarah: Solid, beautiful, full of love. Raza: She said it.

How is Dr Zarqa Aesthetic Skin Clinic different from other cosmetology clinics? We have set high standards for the market; we’re honest with our clients and our staff members are trained to give only the most suitable advice and nothing less. What are the challenges that come with your job? The challenges that come with the job are keeping your sense of integrity and honesty in a market driven by material gains. What is your greatest professional and personal strength? I believe my greatest professional strength is competence. My personal strength is my family; we work together and grow together. Do you think there is a downside to getting frequent cosmetic procedures? Too much of everything is always bad; so a balance in cosmetic procedures is a good thing to have. I often reduce the number of procedures for some of my regular customers to keep everything balanced. In your opinion, what social stigma does society need to get over? I think we need to stop worrying about what others think and start living for ourselves.

Farhan Saeed has a reason to believe that Bollywood just rippedoff his song ‘Roiyaan’ Farhan Saeed accused Bollywood composer, Salim Merchant of plagiarism. Saeed took to Twitter to express how he feels Merchant’s song Hareya “is a total copy” of his song Roiyaan. Merchant responded to Saeed’s claims saying he just heard Farhan’s song, and that it is a mere coincidence. “It happens many a time when notes have a natural progression from each other. Suleman and I have a track record of never plagiarising” Merchant responded. “If you say so! Another coincidence is we have the same lyricist! Anyway, good luck!” the singer clapped back. In response Merchant asked Saeed to check with the lyricist himself. “I really wish I had heard your song before I made mine. Would have surely made changes to our composition to make it sound different from yours. Anyway, Hope you understand” Merchant wrote.

Kim Kardashian West ‘got in trouble’ with Kanye for letting daughter wear makeup Kim opened up about allowing eldest daughter, North to wear make-up and revealed that husband Kanye West got upset about it. “I’d let her wear — you know, she has a little red for Christmas — I’d let her wear a red lip, or I’d let her do one pop of something. I’d let her, if she’s wearing a black dress, a black lip. So, I kind of got in trouble for that,” the mother of four said. She shared that North is no longer allowed to put any makeup on. “So, it’s now no more makeup” she said.

Rihanna says she has no time to make new music anymore In a recent interview, Rihanna, now a fashion mogul spoke about her busy schedule and expressed how she is too occupied at the moment to put out an album. “I used to be in the studio for three months straight and an album would come out. Now it’s like a carousel. I do fashion one day, lingerie the next, beauty the next, then music the next. It’s like having a bunch of kids and you need to take care of them all. It really does suck that it [the album] can’t just come out because I’m working on a really fun one right now. I’m really happy with a lot of the material we have so far but I am not going to put it out until its complete” she shared.
