Belle LaRose Boutique was created with one vision in mind, to have a "One-of-a-Kind shopping experience" for its buyers! My Etsy shop was created to act as a secondary income, but it has turned into more than that for me. I find myself making new items every week so that I can constantly have different items to offer to the public, that are one-of-a-kind creations from my shop! I NEVER duplicate my items, unless it is a special request. I'm hoping to reach a full range audience, who appreciates handmade and can experience the happiness of knowing that their items are the only ones available from my shop. The joys of knowing that "the lady up the street will never have my specific items" is what motivates me for much success and a continued customer base!

A lunar eclipse in your relationship corner on the 4th sets up six months of new—or renewed—passion. Singles: You could get into a committed partnership. Couples: Your connections might grow. When Mercury and the sun join Mars in your money house (on the 14th and 20th, respectively), an exciting financial opportunity might arise.

Red lights turn green once lucky Jupiter straightens out in your sign on the 8th. On the 20th, your celestial ruler, the sun, joins Mars and Mercury in your professional axis. Between the sun’s charisma, Mars’ energy and Mercury’s gift of gab, you’ll be irresistible. Let your personal GPS guide you to your highest objectives, and don’t ease off the pedal until you reach them.

It’s OK to daydream. With three planets in your fantasy field, your best ideas come not from spreadsheets or reports but by letting your fertile mind wander. The lunar eclipse in your health zone on the 4th will influence your life for six months and help you reach a physical goal. Fitness classes and gear aren’t splurges—they’re investments!

When working with others, don’t hesitate to spell out your conditions. A lunar eclipse illuminates your financial sector on the 4th, bringing new growth over the next six months. On the 6th, your ruling planet, Mercury, links up with independent Uranus, joined by a new moon on the 18th. If you want to start anew, now’s the chance.

You won’t be able to rein in your ambition once a lunar eclipse brightens your zone of professional success on the 4th. Your efforts of the past six months bear fruit in the next several weeks, so bring your A-game to every meeting. Creatively, you’re unstoppable. Don’t worry about perfection. Just do it —you can always tweak it later.

Teamwork makes the dream work. Your group-activity sphere is fired up by the sun, a new moon and your ruler, Mercury, on the 18th. A lunar eclipse on the 4th illuminates your sector of creativity and imagination, reconnecting you to your muse. Over the next six months, sign up for a class or workshop to hone your talents—or develop new ones.

Circle the 4th in red lipstick: A lunar eclipse in Libra makes you queen not just for a day, but for the next six months! When you have cosmic support like this, the sky’s the limit. Get serious about setting big goals for what you want—and what you want to let go of. Also, your ruler, Venus, brightens your travel field starting on the 11th. Where will you go?

Feeling stuck? Maybe you need to refresh your image. You don’t have to hire a branding consultant to update your communication style. The alignment of ruling Uranus, expressive Mercury and a new moon on the 18th helps you reinvent from the ground up. Upload some new photos to your online profile and let a savvy friend edit your bio.

You need time to recharge your batteries, and a lunar eclipse in your domestic realm on the 4th helps you do that. During the next six months, consider turning down nonessential events and spending time at home. But be aware: Three planets in your work arena might bring opportunities, including something totally new, during the new moon on the 18th.

9 | Etsians.com | April 2015

Creating support systems is your key to success. You’ll have no problem doing that with three planets—plus a new moon on the 18th—in your organization sphere. Working with a partner can maximize your talents and save you time. On the 14th, reach out to your top candidates and be prepared to get more than one enthusiastic response.

Nov 23–Dec 21 Friends take center stage during the lunar eclipse on the 4th. If you’ve missed the synergy of groups, now’s the time to get back into “team groove.” When your ruler, Jupiter, straightens out on the 8th, think about how to become a greater asset at work. A new moon in your innovation corner on the 18th helps you turn a brainstorm into a moneymaking reality.

Feb 19–Mar 20 A lunar eclipse on the 4th deepens a personal relationship. This is the time for commitment, either connecting with his family, moving in together—or maybe setting the date. With Saturn retrograde in your career sector all month, work might stall, but your money house is electrified. A new moon on the 18th could attract creative new income sources.

I’m an abstract and mixed media artist. I've been working with mainly recycled items for a few years now. Giving new life to old things. Currently I am obsessed with refusing to let anything go to waste. If my paint brush is over loaded, I simply can't wash the paint off. I wipe it off onto coffee filters, paper towels or even newsprint papers. That got me thinking, with all the cardboard and scrap paper I have stored, why not create with what I have? Thus the making of my eco-friendly bookmarks.

THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE 13 | Etsians.com | April 2015

Master of multitasking her day to day life ; being a fulltime mother to two girls, a wife, and running a successful Etsy online shop. She shares her story & explains how she does it all. by Maylani Sayers

As i’m siting in my office chair, surfing the internet, i came across an Etsy shop called, Make My Maxi. I thought to myself, “Wow, over 2,000 sales! How does she do it?”. I then clicked on her reviews to see what her past customers have said about her shop— mind you she has over 480 reviews. I was amazed on how many 5 stars her shop has and by all the amazing things her customers had to say. You could tell by the reviews how dedicated she is to making her customers happy. At that very moment, i knew we had found our cover story. I was determined to find out her story and to hear how she runs such a successful online shop .

T E E M E N O Y R E EV L E H C RA The woman behind Make My Maxi is Rachel Parker. A mother of two, wife, and business woman. She gives us an exclusive look into her journey.

1

Tell us a little about yourself and your beautiful family.

I am 24 years old and from Nashville, Tennessee. I met my husband Bobby while we were at school in Idaho. We now reside near Seattle, Washington and live just about 50 yards from the beach. We love to take our two little girls, Alora (age 4) and Kallie (age 2) to the beach to look for crabs and build sand castles. We are also blessed to have a post office so close that we can walk along the beach to get there which is always the highlight of our day. April 2015 | Etsian.com | 14

2

What inspired you to open your own online shop?

To be honest, up until the day that I actually created my own online shop I had never once considered opening one. I was very happy being a stay-at-home mom and homemaker, but with two little girls, a husband finishing up his undergraduate degree, and living like starving students I decided to try something that wasn’t in our plans. I made and sold a few skirts locally that friends and family would buy every once in a while, but the whole feel changed when I designed and started selling Knot-ems. It wasn’t just family and friends buying anymore. People I had never met were thanking me and telling me how much they loved them, and then they would tell their friends about them. I really loved that feeling; a total stranger caring about something that I had made. It was amazing! So even though our financial situation is what got me started down that road, the desire to take my little business to the next level and be able to have that feeling on a larger scale is what ultimately inspired me to open up my own online shop.

3

What made you choose Etsy?

One of my friends brought up Etsy the same week I started selling Knot-ems. I had heard of it but never used it. She told me that Etsy logged all your sales and that at the end of the year would allow you to print off all the business information you would need to do your taxes. I was sold right then. After a year of working with Etsy, the tax information perk is great, but what I’ve come to love most is how organized the site feels and how great it is for networking. I can find people all over the country who make shirts, scarves, earrings, etc… that match my Knot-ems. Before you know it people who buy from them are buying from me and vice versa.

4 Have you always loved creating things? What was your first item you made? and what inspired you to make it? I have always loved creating things. Specifically, I’ve always loved engineering solutions to problems. I am only 5' 2" and so I was always jealous of those girls who could walk into a store and a maxi skirt was just the perfect length on them. Meanwhile for me I was drowning in fabric. So I started upcycling large maxi dresses into maxi skirts for myself. From there I decided that my maxi skirts needed a matching accessory so I turned to the internet to get some ideas. I really liked the idea of knotted head wraps but all the ones I found used two pieces of fabric creating a hole in the center where the fabrics came together. On top of that, they all relied on elastic for stretch. I've never had any luck keeping any hair accessory with elastic from shooting off my head like a rubber band. So I went to work and after a couple days I had come up with a solution that used only one piece of fabric (getting rid of the gap in the knot) and relied on its own natural stretch instead of elastic.

5

HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO JUGGLE BEING A WIFE, MOTHER, AND RUN A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS? WHAT KIND OF ADVICE WOULD YOU SUGGEST TO OTHER FELLOW SHOP OWNERS WHO MAY HAVE A HARD TIME FIGURING IT OUT?

To get the balance that we wanted in regards to business and family, we just made the decision early on that the business would never get in the way of family. Sometimes situations don’t allow for it, but I generally try not to do any business during the day when my girls are awake. Sometimes if there are smaller tasks like packing and getting items ready to ship I’ll let them help me. My husband and I work together at nights and usually watch a show together while we work, and generally once a week I won’t do any work so that we can have a date night. I also have a few girls who are kind of on-call where if I ever feel like the time between when my girls go to bed and when I go to bed won’t be enough time to finish what needs to get done, I’ll get a hold of one of them and see if they can help.

17

WHATS YOUR FAVORITE THING IN YOUR SHOP RIGHT NOW? 6

My favorite items in my shop right now are the “causes” Knot-ems. We started selling them when one of our friends, Jared Hawke passed away after a long battle with brain cancer. For every one we sold we donated 25% of the proceeds to any charity of the buyer’s choice relating to fighting brain cancer. People saw that one, asked if we had other causes Knot-ems, and frequently told us their stories and about their personal trials with some very challenging issues. Since then we’ve added Knot-ems that help in researching autism, fighting/ raising awareness of MS, CHD, breast cancer, childhood cancer, infant/child loss, and others, and are working on adding more.

7 WHAT KIND OF THINGS DID YOU DO TO GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE?

17 | Etsians.com | April 2015

The hardest part of it all was getting my name out there. I basically just had to use every resource I could think of. I would rely on people finding me through Etsy searches, but I would also get my name out on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Craigslist, Twitter, etc… all with links back to my Etsy page. I also turned my whole family into walking billboards. Wherever we go my girls and I wear Knot-ems and my husband wears a matching Slouch-em beanie. When people ask where we got them I hand them a business card with my Etsy link. I also found that you can never go wrong with giveaways and sales. I do giveaways weekly rewarding people who get their friends to visit my Etsy page. I hold auctions where they can get Knotems for up to 50% off. I had people throw online parties for their friends where they got free Knot-ems when their friends bought from my Etsy shop. I’m sure there are a ton of other techniques to get your name out but those have worked for me.

8

When did you start to see your shop take off? and how did it make you feel? I knew my shop had taken off when I saw that I had sold at least one Knot-em in all 50 states. That was a pretty cool moment. It was also surprising when I found myself shipping them to European and other countries. It was very exciting to think about someone half way around the world wearing and hopefully enjoying something I made for them.

9

Did you ever feel discouraged?

Early on I felt discouraged at times. Especially in the beginning when you know that you have an awesome idea or product, but you can't seem to get the word out about it as fast as you would like to. When you start out with one or two customers the exponential growth that comes from word of mouth takes time to do its thing. Some days I would let it get to me, but I found out that discouragement could also be a driving force to get out and do more or think of a new way to build my business. I have now learned to appreciate the good times and push harder during the bad times. There is always something to do when things aren't flying off the shelves and so I'm always looking for way to improve our shop and grow it.

10 Anything you can tell us that your customers could expect to

come out in the near future? New products? One thing that we’re really excited about is the half-and-half Knot-ems. Customers can mix and match any two fabrics to create their own custom Knot-em for the same price as a regular one-fabric Knotem. The difficult part has been trying to find a way to allow customers to see all 300+ fabric choices they can mix and match. We’ve been working with one of our friends to develop a plug-in that allows clients to go from our Etsy listing to a place where they can mess around with all 300+ fabric choices and theoretically create 90,000+ different custom Knot-ems. After they have made their two fabric selections, it sends them back to Etsy where a custom listing had already been created. It will be exciting once we have that done since it will save people an extra step of having people go to our sales group on Facebook to pick their fabrics. And from there having them tell me what they want to create the custom listing. Another exciting thing we are working on is custom hoodies where you can mix and match fabrics to design your own hoodie and even have the option to add thumbhole sleeve cuffs. They are basically the most comfy hoodie you will ever wear.

In my opinion, Rachel has proven that with hard work and dedication, you can achieve your goals in life.

Mad-K Designs

I have been sewing for 47 yrs. For the past 13 years I have been sewing for a manufacturer. In Mad-K Designs, I create: diaper bags, tote bags, purses, wristlets, quilts, Christening gowns (made from your wedding dress), jewelry. I offer vintage sewing patterns, discontinued fabric and misc. items. Many of my items are designed by me, and offered in limited editions. Custom orders are always welcome. All my bags and purses come with a one year warranty.

Why handmade items are the way to go in 2015? Buying handmade is also a tremendous boost to small business and to the economy as a whole. It’s small businesses that are the backbone of our economy. We need thriving small businesses in order for everyone to prosper. This certainly plays into our local markets, but in this day and age of global integration, the world economy can benefit as well. With global, online marketplaces,
the sky is the limit for sellers desiring to reach new audiences and for buyers wanting to purchase quality handmade items outside of their local markets. We have the opportunity to connect with sellers and buyers from all over the world who have a common vision for global exchange of ideas, design inspiration, and who are passionate about the growing interest in buying handmade and supporting small businesses.

Buying handmade can become a total lifestyle choice. Choosing to buy handmade is just like choosing to buy local produce. You simply cannot compare mass produced products to artisan created goods in terms of inspiration, quality, and attention to detail. The same is true for many other handcrafted items. The raw materials are better, the workmanship is superior, and the finished product is truly something to be treasured and enjoyed. There is also an undeniable, irreplaceable element of the designer or producer in every handcrafted item – a spirit and soul that stamps each item in a way that mainstream production cannot replicate. In addition, many artisans welcome the opportunity to use their creativity and skill to create items that are custom, one of a kind, and uniquely personalized.

ETSIANS WORD SEARCH

As a child my grandmother always wanted to teach her granddaughters the art of crochet. I tried so many times but never stuck to it until my own daughter was born. Quickly friends, and then friends of friends were contacting me to have me make items for them. I did a few local craft fairs, and finally took the plunge and opened my Etsy shop! I still love my little hobby, it occupies much of my free time, and I am looking forward to publishing some of my own patterns in my shop soon!

This super soft crochet lamb hat makes the perfect baby shower gift or photo prop and is available in cream or grey.
