Dean’s Newsletter GRADUATION CELEBRATION 2018
Alumni, Perhaps you drove on ETSU’s campus this summer and appreciated how quiet things seemed. Don’t be fooled. Campus is actually quite busy in the summer, and the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences was particularly busy with big projects.
Congratulations to the 153 students who graduated from CCRHS in May 2018!
As of July 1, 2018 we were pleased to welcome the Department of Social Work and its 27 faculty and staff to our college. It has been a smooth transition as the department moved from the College of Arts and Sciences to CCRHS. We are so pleased about the more robust clinical opportunities and interprofessional health care collaboration this will provide for Social Work students. Another summer project involved launching a newly created Department of Rehabilitative Sciences. Please read the feature article on page two of this newsletter to learn about this exciting addition to the CCRHS academic program offerings. In the midst of all the administrative work, one of the most rewarding aspects of summer is to see our students throw themselves into their clinical training throughout the community and into special opportunities across campus, such as in the camps we sponsor for children with special needs. The passion our students have for their chosen fields and their inexhaustible zeal to help others is humbling and, at the same time, encouraging. As you will learn by reading this newsletter, I am confident that this Fall Semester of 2018 will mark the start of an era of growth and change like no other our college has ever experienced. Many of you have played a part in that. Thank you for your support. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students. And, thank you for helping the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences grow in its role as the leading health care college in the region. Highest Regards,
Don Samples, Dean

COLLEGE AND STUDENT NEWS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND UPDATES Students in Costa Rica
CCRHS partnered with the University of Santa Paula to offer an international interprofessional experience that took 10 speech-language pathology and physical therapy students to Costa Rica to provide health care to the people of that region. Dr. James Boone from the Physical Therapy department coordinated the trip and accompanied the students. Dr. Boone and the physical therapy and speech-language pathology students will present a poster at the 2018 American Speech-Language Hearing Association convention this November in Boston.
Outstanding Dietetics Award
Michaela Thompson, a second-year graduate intern, was selected for the 2018 Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Outstanding Dietetics Student Award.

CCRHS Offers New Major
The college is excited to announce the approval of a new B.S. degree in Rehabilitative Health Sciences! This new degree focuses on interprofessional rehabilitation and is a great major for students interested in rehabilitation or for any pre-health student. The curriculum is innovative as it is the only degree program in the country that is entirely framed within the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). This degree will prepare students for either entry-level positions within rehabilitation and health care or for application to graduate programs in rehabilitation professions, such as Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy. It is not a competitive-entry major, unlike many other degree programs within the college. Please contact Megan Roberts, Director of Student Success, at 423-439-7424 if you’d like more information about the degree or career options!
Social Work joins CCRHS
Beginning in the Fall of 2018, the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (ASLP) is excited to offer a new undergraduate minor in American Sign Language (ASL), which includes 6 classes (18 credits). This program includes a sequence of courses in ASL along with courses on Deaf Culture and Linguistic Perspectives in ASL. ASL is the third most studied foreign/modern language in the U.S. The Tennessee state legislature recently joined other states in approving ASL as meeting the foreign language requirement for high school graduation. Ann Knudsvig is an assistant professor who will be teaching the courses in the ASL Minor. She comes to us from Corpus Christi, Texas where she had been teaching ASL for six years on the secondary level and as an adjunct faculty member in an interpreter training program.
The ETSU Department of Social Work joined the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences. The department’s move from the College of Arts and Sciences to CCRHS became effective July 1, 2018. Traditionally, social work programs are housed in allied health colleges, and the transition will align ETSU with that trend while also bolstering the university’s efforts in teaching health sciences students in interdisciplinary teams. Dr. Don Samples, Dean of CCRHS, says, “The transfer better suits the needs of social work students because the department now has an affiliation with a college that offers clinical experiences. This will allow students to participate more easily in many of the CCRHS clinics, including our ALS and autism clinics, and will also provide more interprofessional education opportunities and study abroad experiences.”

Director of Student Success
The vision of the college is to equip students as expert practitioners and launch them into their chosen profession so that they can meet the essential health care needs of the community. This outcome is best achieved with excellent support and advisement as soon as students set foot on campus. With this in mind, CCRHS established a new position, Director of Student Success. After a national search, the college is pleased to announce that Megan Roberts will be assuming this role and will head the Student Advisement Center. Megan says, “My mission as the Director of Student Success is to assist and empower our students to achieve their highest educational potential. I hope to enrich the quality of student academic experiences at ETSU and within our college. The purpose of this position, along with the development of the Student Success Center, is to continue to develop and implement best practices in advisement, increase engagement with regional high schools and community colleges, and develop programs that promote student leadership and participation outside of the classroom.”
