NEWS & VIEWS Feedback We got a lot of responses to Violet Ikonomova’s story about Hakim Littleton, the 20-year-old man who was killed by Detroit Police after he shot at them in July. This is sad. I don’t want anyone to die especially so young but unfortunately when you play stupid games you win stupid prizes. —Larry Smashey, Facebook Only those invested in Black folks or who have any empathy will take the time to read the article. The piece doesn’t excuse or justify Hakim Littleton’s wrongdoings. But it does explain the circumstances regarding how he got there. (And those circumstances are very familiar.) Privilege

means not having to personally deal with (or think about) the issues and circumstances Hakim had to deal with. — Stephen Harvey, Facebook Apparently nobody read the article. Let’s be honest, there aren’t a lot of opportunities for young Black men in the city and it’s very easy to turn to crime just to get by. Once you get in the system its an endless cycle. When I was his age I could have easily ended up in his situation after dropping out of college but I ended up joining the military just to get away and experience something beyond the eventual dead end of the streets. —Marcus White, Facebook We know you have opinions! Dr. Jo Jorgensen.

Libertarian Jo Jorgensen has never smoked pot

But she would still defend your right to do it in her longshot bid for president B y Lee DeVito

In the Libertarian Party,

presidential candidates don’t pick their running mates; instead, they’re chosen by delegates at the nominating convention in a separate vote. This year’s presidential ticket resulted in the odd- couple pairing of D r. J o J orgensen, an academic from S outh C arolina, and J eremy “ S pike” C ohen, a podcaster prankster who promises “a Waffle House on every corner” and to fund time travel research to kill baby Adolf Hitler. “ All I can say is that I was the one who was nominated for president,” J orgensen says, diplomatically, when asked about her running mate’s more out- there ideas. “ And so I’m not campaigning on any of those things. I do have a different platform, and so that’s the one that I’m pushing.” Metro T imes caught up with her before a campaign stop in D etroit. That platform is that “ government is too big, too bossy, too nosy, and too in-

trusive,” J orgensen says. “ And the worst part is they usually end up hurting the very people they try to help.” In a political system where D emocrats and R epublicans dominate, third- party candidates like J orgensen, who made a campaign stop in D etroit on M onday, have their work cut out for them — and especially this year, with the coronavirus pandemic, civil unrest in the streets, and the all- consuming contest between President D onald Trump and D emocrat J oe Biden, which has been cast as no less than a battle between authoritarianism and democracy, the top issues of the day. E arlier this year, U .S . R ep. J ustin Amash of Grand Rapids briefly considered seeking the Libertarian Party nomination after defecting from the R epublican Party and becoming the lone Libertarian in C ongress, but backed out after just three weeks, citing the “ extraordinary challenges” of 2 0 2 0 . J orgensen, however, remains unde-

18 September 30-October 6, 2020 | metrotimes.com

terred. “The path of course is very difficult, but I still say somebody has to run,” J orgensen says. “ We have to get the word out there. And so many people are realizing that the two parties just aren’t working.” F our years ago, the Libertarian Party ran a high-profile ticket featuring two former R epublican governors, G ary J ohnson of N ew M exico and William Weld of M assachusetts. It wound up being the Libertarian Party’s most successful presidential run to date, earning nearly 4 .5 million votes nationally. (F or perspective, Trump and C linton received more than 6 0 million votes each, while the G reen Party’s J ill S tein earned just 1 .4 million votes.) The Libertarians did so well in M ichigan in 2 0 1 6 that the party qualified to hold a primary in the 2018 governor’s race — the first time that a third party did so in almost 5 0 years. The margin between Trump and C linton was just some 1 0 ,0 0 0 votes in

M ichigan, meaning that third- party voters got plenty of blame for helping Trump win. E ven Bill G elineau — who helped campaign for J ohnson in 2 0 1 6 and won M ichigan’s Libertarian Party gubernatorial nomination in 2018, where he came in a distant third — told us earlier this year that he was going to put his party aside and vote for Biden in N ovember. “ It’s not because I don’t believe in the party — I worked my ass off for people in the Libertarian Party — but the fact that M ichigan is going to be a critical state,” he says. “ I believe that Trump is a clear and present danger.” (Amash, meanwhile, has endorsed J orgensen.) S till, J orgensen thinks there’s an appetite for a third choice this year, claiming that most of her campaign’s volunteers have come from outside the party. Trump, she says, appealed to many because he was an outsider who promised to cut spending, balance the budget, and bring our troops

home. “ And he did none of that,” she says. “ And so what I would like to say is that for all the people who wanted a true outsider, I’m that outsider. I think people do deserve a choice, and right now they don’t have much of a choice between Trump and Biden.” Of course, plenty of Biden supporters will say there is a clear choice, and point to Trump’s move to fill the S upreme C ourt seat vacated by the late R uth Bader G insburg as proof that liberal third- party voters should have just pinched their noses and voted for C linton; even if you don’t love a particular candidate, you have to look at the four- dimensional chessboard. But J orgensen believes the D emocratic Party deserves to be critiq ued. “ The D emocratic Party that I grew up learning about in the ’6 0 s was against the war, and they were for free speech, and they basically thought that people should be making their own decisions,” she says. “ And that’s not the party of today. The party today is very pro- war. And of course they don’t believe in free speech.” J orgensen says she wants to “ turn America into one giant S witzerland, armed and neutral.” S he also points to the D emocratic Party’s slow, reluctant acceptance of gay marriage as an example of a lack of leadership and principles; they accepted it only once the popular culture did. “ Both Hillary C linton and Barack Obama said that gay marriage should be illegal,” she says. “ I don’t for a minute think that they agreed with that, but they’re just going after the votes. They’re not standing up for what’s right.” Another issue that she thinks that the Libertarian Party has long been ahead of both major parties is the right to use marijuana — neither Trump nor Biden have come out strong in support of cannabis, despite the fact that the majority of states have legalized it, and most voters support it. S o has J orgensen ever smoked pot — and did she inhale? That gets a laugh out of the self- described “ goody- two- shoes.” (“ The nice thing about me running for president is I have no dirt,” she says.) “ I somehow managed to get through high school and college in the 1 9 7 0 s without ever having tried marijuana,” she says, adding that she got a graduate certificate in drug and addiction studies. “ What I do is I tell people that my drug of choice is bourbon, which is actually more dangerous than marijuana. I tell people that the only way marijuana kills you is if a bale of it falls on your head. However, I think that we should be able to be free to use whatever drugs we choose. And so I choose to use the more dangerous drug of bourbon.” N evertheless, J orgensen says she

would remove marijuana from the federal list of controlled substances on her first day in office. “ I’ve had a lot of people say, ‘ Well, I don’t use drugs, so I don’t care about the drug issue,’” she says. The problems associated with drugs — violence, crime — “ aren’t drug problems; those are prohibition problems,” she says, adding that cannabis is a safer alternative for pain relief than the opiates that so many Americans have become addicted to. We admit, it almost feels silly to be asking about pot in the middle of a pandemic that has completely upended life around the world. But J orgensen believes there is a Libertarian solution to the pandemic, as well: S he says Trump could have used his emergency powers to streamline the F D A and approve more C OV ID - 1 9 tests; then, the U .S . could have avoided much of the long economic shutdowns by implementing a large government- run mass testing program, as other countries have done. R egarding the Black Lives M atter protests against police brutality, J orgensen agrees that the problem is institutionalized racism, a problem made worse by the federal government militarizing police departments with weapons and tanks. “ Instead of having the kind of community with the beat cop who knows everybody’s name, now instead what you have is kind of an usversus- them mentality,” she says. “ If you look at, for instance, R osa Parks, the heroic Black woman who refused to sit on the back of the bus, a lot of people don’t realize that was a government- run, government- owned bus,” J orgensen says. “ And 6 0 % of the bus ridership at the time were Blacks. What if U ber were to discriminate against 6 0 % of their customers? They would go out of business, as well they should. But the government doesn’t go out of business — the government can discriminate without any accountability, just like with J im C row laws, just like with redlining, S o we’ve got the government who has basically set up this broken system.” D espite the Libertarians’ gains in 2 0 1 6 , we’re not sure 2 0 2 0 is the year to make the case for a smaller government and a free market, with the push for reopening the economy making the U .S . the top coronavirus hotspot in the entire world. S o we have to ask: K nowing that the Libertarian Party faces a long shot, does J orgensen have a preference as to who will win — Trump or Biden? “ N ot really,” she says. “ Because both of them want to spend our money. Both of them want to make decisions for us. N either one wants to bring the troops home.”

Either Amy Coney Barrett understands why Trump picked her, or she doesn’t. I’m not sure which is worse.

Informed Dissent

Get in on the fix By Jeffrey C. Billman

In 2016, Notre D

ame law professor Amy C oney Barrett opined that it would be inappropriate for M errick G arland to replace her mentor, Antonin S calia, on the S upreme C ourt during an election year because doing so would “dramatically flip the balance of power. On S aturday, the same Amy C oney Barrett accepted D onald Trump’s nomination to replace R uth Bader G insburg on the ourt. er enate confirmation, which seems all but certain, will not only alter the balance of power days before a presidential election. t will cement right- wing control of the judiciary for a generation. With Barrett on the bench, R epublicans believe they’ll have the votes to overturn Roe v. Wade, roll back environmental regulations, and block labor protections. f they can confirm her by N ovember 1 0 , she’ll hear arguments in a case that could overturn the ffordable are ct. While nearly every reputable legal scholar has dismissed the underlying theory as preposterous, Barrett has made clear she’s no friend of the AC A, and she’s not that worried about precedent. s she wrote in a law review article (emphasis mine): “ The S upreme C ourt’s constitutional mistakes are e tremely difficult to correct one can hope only for a change of heart, a change of personnel, or a change by

constitutional amendment. F or Trump, seating Barrett q uickly is about something more important than undoing the him. e needs a ninth justice in place because — well, ’ll let him tell you “ think this election] will end up in the S upreme C ourt, and think it’s very important that we have nine ustices. is allies have been even more e plicit. enator Ted ru “ ne of the biggest reason sic we will confirm the nominee BE F OR E E lection D ay is to ensure a full 9 - J ustice majority to resolve any (inevitable) election disputes. enator Lindsey Graham “ S upreme C ourt is not a good deal for merica. ow, we may have litigation about who won the election, but the court will decide. N ever mind that having eight justices didn’t bother them in 201 . The important thing is that they’re talking about the C ourt deciding elections like it’s normal — something to expect rather than something that’s happened once in 8 presidential elections. The math is simple: According to this weekend’s Washington Post/ ABC N ews poll, J oe Biden is winning voters who plan to vote early or absentee by 3 6 points, while Trump is up among lection ay voters by 1 . o Trump has spent months raising doubts about

mail-in voting. e’s amassed thousands of lawyers to contest absentee ballots in swing states where Trump is behind, while R epublican apparatchiks lay the groundwork to turn an election Trump is likely to lose into a legal contest he can game. Last week, the epartment of J ustice announced an active investigation — something it never does — into nine discarded military ballots in Pennsylvania, highlighting the fact that some contained Trump votes, thus fueling the president’s conspiracies. t turned out to be a temporary contractor’s administrative error. M eanwhile, Pennsylvania R epublicans have refused to address the issue of so- called naked ballots, which election officials fear could disenfranchise 1 0 0 ,0 0 0 absentee voters on a technicality. t the same time, they’ve asked the S upreme C ourt to overrule the Pennsylvania S upreme C ourt’s decision to extend the state deadline for absentee ballots. The Trump campaign previously challenged N evada’s move to expand voting by mail. t lost, but ttorney G eneral Bill Barr then claimed in an interview that N evada’s change would lead to fraud: “ S omeone will say the President ust won evada. h, wait a minute! We just discovered 1 0 0 ,0 0 0

ballots! E very vote will be counted! ’ Y eah, but we don’t know where these freaking votes came from. n hio, a udge ruled that the Republican secretary of state’s directive to allow each county only one absentee ballot drop bo was unreasonable the secretary of state plans to appeal. The Trump-aligned onest lections Pro ect is suing to block absentee ballots that arrive soon after the election but lack postmarks from being counted in innesota. F lorida, which slapped an impossibly confusing poll tax on hundreds of thousands of ex- felons who were given the right to vote by a constitutional amendment, now wants the to investigate ichael loomberg for paying $ 1 6 million toward 3 2 ,0 0 0 e -felons’ fines and fees, almost as if restitution was never really the point. Then there’s N orth C arolina, where the Trump campaign and state R epublican leaders have sued to block changes that make it easier for absentee voters to correct ballot deficiencies — in other words, to have their votes counted. The lawsuit came after the two R epublican members of the S tate Board of E lections resigned “in protest of an agreement with voting rights advocates that they’d agreed to, then said they were misled about. The meeting minutes showed they weren’t. The goal isn’t to win outright so much as to muddy the waters. s one of Trump’s legal advisers told The Atlantic, “ There will be a count on E lection N ight, that count will shift over time, and the results when the final count is given will be challenged as being inaccurate, fraudulent — pick your word. As Trump put it last week when he refused to promise a peaceful transfer of power, “ G et rid of the ballots and you’ll have a very peaceful — there won’t be a transfer, frankly. There will be a continuation. The plan is to delegitimi e vote counts, challenge ballots, and clog the courts with lawsuits. ow enough chaos, and R epublican legislatures might bypass voters and directly appoint electors to the lectoral ollege. s The Atlantic story makes clear, the Trump campaign is eyeing the possibility. This much is unambiguous: S hort of a blowout, the election is headed to court, which means the S upreme C ourt will have the final word. o is this n arrett, Trump found a ustice he thinks will get in on the fi . the best of

detroit in the worst of times

Nothing stops the Motor City With the coronavirus turning the world upside

down, we debated whether we should even do our annual Best of Detroit issue this year.

On the one hand, it felt too painful not to be able to celebrate some of our favorite things in 2020, like seeing live music at our city’s wonderful music venues or eating out at the bars and restaurants that are elevating our local dining scene. Even though we saw it coming, it hurt every time we got a press release announcing that an event that we’ve been looking forward to all year, like Movement Electronic Music Festival and the Halloween extravaganza Theatre Bizarre, were canceled.

The businesses we have been able to enjoy have been forced to adapt to the virus, like how Kuzzo’s Chicken & Waffles installed plexiglass panes and pivoted to carryout mere days after reopening from a remodeling, or how Detroit Jazz Fest switched to a broadcast format. And then there are the many businesses that could not weather the storm and were forced to close up shop forever. We paused our online poll and braced for the worst as Detroit became

one of the nation’s top COVID-19 hotspots, and even the mighty North American International Auto Show was canceled as the newly renamed TCF Center was transformed into a field hospital. Things got even worse when armed protesters stormed Lansing, demanding an end to Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s pandemic restrictions. But Detroiters put on their masks and took the social-distancing measures seriously. Cases started to drop, and Detroit was no longer declared a hotspot for the virus. Detroiters rallied behind Whitmer, dubbing her “Big Gretch,” and rapper Gmac Cash even raised enough money to

bestow her with a pair of Buffs (though she turned the gift down, instead encouraging Cash to return them and give the money to charity). For now, Detroit has settled into a new normal. People are still dining out, ordering beers on patios or enjoying cocktails-to-go. Local brands pivoted to manufacturing masks, which some fashionistas simply incorporated into their outfits. Bands and DJs have kept the party going, performing outdoors or on livestreams. So earlier this summer, we decided to relaunch our poll, and see what Detroit was digging. Here are the results. —Lee DeVito

Savage Love

CULTURE Q : I’m a thirty-something gay man

married to a thirty-something gay man. For almost two years, we’ve been seeing another pair of married gay men around our age. They were our rst ex perience with any sex ual or romantic interaction outside of our relationship. The rst six months were hot and heavy. We were together constantly and having sex almost every night. A fter the “ honeymoon phase” ended, one member of the other couple ( “ R oger” ) wanted to slow things down. R oger and I had some con ict over this and I have to admit that I showed a pretty bad side of myself while grappling with insecurity. E ventually, R oger pulled me aside to talk one-on-one. He wanted us to be “ friends who have sex sometimes.” T hen, right after the CO VID-1 9 lockdown started, R oger and I had another heart-to-heart on my birthday. A fter many drinks and a lot of making out, we both said we loved each other. R oger walked it back the nex t day. “ I don’t know what you thought you heard last night,” he basically said, “ but I’m not in love with you.” I was devastated. T his isn’t what I want. I am in love with R oger and his husband. I don’t want to be “ friends who have sex sometimes.” My husband is O K with j ust being friends with R oger and his husband, especially since their large friend group has adopted us and he worries we’ll lose all these new friends if I end our friendship with R oger and his husband. I would really like to talk this out with R oger, but I’m not sure I can get through that conversation without DT MFA ing him. I mean, which was it? Were we a fun sexy ing and nothing about the last two years mattered? O r was he in love with me but decided the con ict and complication of this relationship wasn’t worth it? Which was it? —T rouble In T he Q uad

A: R

oger doesn’t want what you want. That sucks and I’m sorry. But we’ve all been there. F alling for someone who doesn’t feel as strongly for us as we do for them, whether we’re dating as couples or singles, is always painful. But that pain is an unavoidable risk. And while it may seem unfair that you can only have R oger in your life on his terms, that’s the reality. That’s everyone’s reality, TITQ , because loving someone doesn’t obligate that person to love us back or love us in the same way that we love them or want the same things we want. But R oger can’t impose his terms on you. If being “ just friends” feels like an

insulting consolation prize after what the last two years has meant to you, if that’s not good enough, then R oger doesn’t get to be in your life. Y ou can have terms, too. Backing up for a second: Y ou seem to believe that if the relationship mattered — if R oger and his husband loved you and your husband and vice- versa — then it wouldn’t have ended. That’s false. S omething can matter and still end. S omething can also matter more to one person than it did to another person. (Or couple.) Y ou don’t have to dismiss or minimize what the four of you had because R oger has decided, for whatever reason, that being in a q uad with you isn’t what he wants. And if you’re hoping to get this q uad back together … and it’s entirely up to R oger … you’re going about it wrong. If R oger got cold feet due to the “conflict and complication of being in a poly relationship, TITQ , then your best move is to avoid conflict and complication. If you think R oger told the truth on your birthday and lied to you the next day, then you need to demonstrate the kind of emotional maturity that makes you a more attractive partner to a person like R oger. And provoking a confrontation with R oger — staging a scene where you’re likely to dump a guy who has already dumped you — will have the opposite effect. t will only confirm for Roger the decision he has already made. Y our best bet — your best strategy — is to accept Roger’s offer of friendship and refrain from blowing up at him. Y ou should also tell him, just once and very calmly, that you and your husband would be open to getting back together with him and his husband. Best- case scenario: The q uad gets back together. Worst- case scenario: Y ou have some great memories, a whole bunch of great new friends, and maybe once in a while a hot foursome with R oger and his husband. Two last things… I would love to see video of you showing the “ bad side” of yourself to R oger. G iven the way people tend to minimize their own shitty behavior — all people do it, myself included — I’m guessing it was/ you were ugly. If you’re prone to blowing up when you don’t get what you want, well, it’s understandable that someone who dislikes

CULTURE ARIES: March 21 – April 19 “ I am, indeed, a king, because I know how to rule myself,” wrote 1 6 th- century author Pietro Aretino. By J anuary 2 0 2 1 , Aries, I would love for you to have earned the right to make a similar statement: “ I am, indeed, a royal sovereign, because I know how to rule myself.” Here’s the most important point: The robust power and clout you have the potential to summon has nothing to do with power and clout over other people — only over yourself. Homework: M editate on what it means to be the imperial boss and supreme monarch of your own fate. TAURUS: April 20 – May 20 “ The basic principle of spiritual life is that our problems become the very place to discover wisdom and love. uddhist teacher ack ornfield made that brilliant observation. It’s always worth meditating on, but it’s an especially potent message for you during the first three weeks of ctober 2 0 2 0 . In my view, now is a highly favorable time for you to extract uplifting lessons by dealing forthrightly with your knottiest dilemmas. I sus-

pect that these lessons could prove useful for the rest of your long life. GEMINI: May 21 – June 20 “ M y business is to love,” wrote poet E mily D ickinson. I invite you to adopt this motto for the next three weeks. It’s an excellent time to intensify your commitment to expressing compassion, empathy, and tenderness. To do so will not only bring healing to certain allies who need it; it will also make you smarter. I mean that literally. Y our actual intelligence will expand and deepen as you look for and capitalize on opportunities to bestow blessings. (P.S ., D ickinson also wrote, “ M y business is to sing.” I recommend you experiment with that mandate, as well.) CANCER: June 21 – July 22 “ I’m the diamond in the dirt that ain’t been found,” sings C ancerian rapper C urtis J ackson, also known as 5 0 C ent. “ I’m the underground king, and I ain’t been crowned,” he adds. M y reading of the astrological omens suggests that a phenomenon like that is going on in your life right now. There’s something unknown about you that deserves and needs to be known. Y ou’re not getting the full credit and acknowledgment you’ve earned through your soulful accomplishments. I hereby authorize you to take action! Address this oversight. R ise up and correct it. LEO: July 23 – August 22 The author bell hooks (who doesn’t capitalize her name) has spent years as a professor in American universities. Adaptability has been a key strategy in her efforts to educate her students. S he writes, “ ne of the things that we must do as teachers is twirl around and around, and find out what works with the situation that we’re in.” That’s excellent advice for you right now — in whatever field you’re in. ld reliable formulas are irrelevant, in my astrological opinion. S trategies that have guided you in the past may not apply to the current scenarios. Y our best bet is to twirl around and around as you e periment to find out what works. VIRGO: August 23 – Sept. 22 “ Y our relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have,” says motivational speaker R obert Holden. Hallelujah and amen! Ain’t that the truth! Which is why it’s so crucial to periodically take a thorough inventory of your relationship with yourself. And guess what, V irgo: N ow would

Free Will Astrology B y R ob B rez sny be a perfect time to do so. E ven more than that: D uring your inventory, if you discover ways in which you treat yourself unkindly or carelessly, you can generate tremendous healing energy by working to fi the glitches. The coming weeks could bring pivotal transformations in your bonds with others if you’re brave enough to make pivotal transformations in your bonds with yourself. LIBRA: Sept. 23 – Oct. 22 In her high school yearbook, Libra- born S igourney Weaver arranged to have this caption beneath her official photo “Please, God, please, don’t let me be normal! ” S ince then, she has had a long and acclaimed career as an actor in movies. S creenPrism.com calls her a pioneer of female action heroes. Among her many e otic roles a fierce warrior who defeats monstrous aliens; an exobiologist working with indigenous people on the moon of a distant planet in the 2 2 nd century; and a naturalist who lives with mountain gorillas in R wanda. If you’ve ever had comparable fantasies about transcending normalcy, Libra, now would be a good time to indulge those fantasies — and begin cooking up plans to make them come true. SCORPIO: Oct. 23 – Nov. 21 S corpio- born Prince C harles has been heir to the British throne for 6 8 years. That’s an eternity to be patiently on hold for his big chance to serve as king. His mother, Q ueen E lizabeth, just keeps going on and on, living her very long life, ensuring that C harles remains second- incommand. But I suspect that many S corpios who have been awaiting their turn will finally graduate to the next step in the coming weeks and months. Will C harles be one of them? Will you? To increase your chances, here’s a tip: M editate on how to be of even greater devotion to the ideals you love to serve. SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 – Dec. 21 Inventor Buckminster F uller was a visionary who loved to imagine ideas and objects no one had ever dreamed of before. ne of his mottoes was, “ There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly. recommend that you spend q uality time in the coming weeks meditating on butterfly-like things you’d love to have as part of your future — things that may resemble caterpillars in the early going. Y our homework is to envision three such innovations that could be in your world by ctober 1, 2021.

CAPRICORN: Dec. 22 – Jan. 19 D uring World War II, Hollywood filmmakers decided it would be a good idea to create stories based on graphic current events. F or example: American M arines waging pitched battles against J apanese soldiers on outh Pacific islands. But audiences were cool to that approach. They preferred comedies and musicals with “ no message, no mission, no misfortune.” In the coming weeks, I advise you to resist any temptation you might have to engage in a similar disregard of current events. In my opinion, your mental health req uires you to be extra discerning and well- informed about politics — and so does the future of your personal destiny. AQ U AR IU S : J an. 2 0 – F eb. 1 8 “ Pretending is imagined possibility,” observes actor M eryl S treep. “ Pretending is a very valuable life skill, and we do it all the time.” In other words, fantasizing about events that may never happen is just one way we use our mind’s eye. We also wield our imaginations to envision scenarios that we actually want to create in our real lives. n fact, that’s the first step in actualizing those scenarios: to play around with picturing them; to pretend they will one day be a literal part of our world. The coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to supercharge the generative aspect of your imagination. I encourage you to be especially vivid and intense as you visualize in detail the future you want. PISCES: Feb.19 – March 20 “ M y own soul must be a bright invisible green,” wrote author and philosopher Henry D avid Thoreau. N ovelist Tom R obbins suggested that we visualize the soul as “ a cross between a wolf howl, a photon, and a dribble of dark molasses.” N obel Prize– winning poet Wislawa S zymborska observed, “ J oy and sorrow aren’t two different feelings for the soul. Poet E mily D ickinson thought that the soul “ should always stand ajar” — just in case an ecstatic experience or rousing epiphany might be lurking in the vicinity. In the coming weeks, Pisces, I invite you to enjoy your own lively meditations on the nature of your soul. Y ou’re in a phase when such an exploration can yield interesting results. This week’s homework: Make up a song that cheers you up and inspires your ex citement about the future. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
