Last month, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis caught national attention for slashing every dollar of fiscal support for the arts from the state budget, saying the money was “being given in grants to things like the Fringe Festival which is like a sexual festival where they’re doing all this stuff.” Staff of the Orlando and Tampa Fringe Festivals shared with us this open letter to the governor on World Fringe Day, July 11.
An open letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis
Dear Gov. DeSantis,
Like you, we the Orlando and Tampa Fringe festivals care greatly about the citizens of Florida. Given that common ground, we hope that you read this letter with an open mind and fully consider the proposal below.
We assume you did not veto the funding of science centers, aquariums, operas, zoos, children’s programs, and other arts and culture programming lightly, and that much of what has transpired since the June 27 press conference is a misunderstanding. One of the goals of this letter, then, is to clear up some of those misunderstandings.
First, it is important to note that Fringe Festivals are performing arts festivals. We absolutely are not sexual festivals. The genres of performance range widely, but typically include storytelling, theatre, improvisation, circus, dance, comedy, etc. We diligently watch for age appropriateness and ensure that a show with adult content is age-rated accordingly. Through content indicators such as age, we empower our guests to make informed decisions and self-curate their experiences. No one is ever forced or coerced to see a show against their will.
Equally important is the distinction between uncensored and unlawful . Our festivals are uncensored, not unlawful. While a fraction of the work at our festivals could be adults-only, we and the artists operate within the law, including decency requirements. We say “could” because Fringe artists are selected through a lottery-type drawing, thus it is literally the luck of the draw as to whether adult content is a part of these festivals. We as festival producers do not put our thumb on the selection scale, though we proudly provide a platform for any and all artists to share their work.
Second, it is important that Florida taxpayers understand that their tax dollars do not pay Fringe artists. Artists earn their income directly through ticket sales. In fact, 100% of an artist’s advertised ticket price is paid to that artist. Instead, taxpayer dollars help with office expenses, ADA accommodations and staff salaries (i.e., taxpaying Floridians).
More to that point, Florida’s arts and culture sector generates around $176M in state tax revenue, a 550% return on a $26M investment. It could be said, then, that the vetoed $32M is but a small reinvestment into the organizations that help generate significant earned income for the state. (Source: Americans for the Arts’ AEP6 Arts & Economic Prosperity study.)
Defunding Florida’s entire arts and culture sector because of Fringe festivals, which account for just .002% of the vetoed $32M, is akin to canceling Florida’s entire sports industry based on an objection with one player on one team.
Finally, it is important to acknowledge that the many worthy organizations that have been negatively impacted by the veto are critical parts of the social, educational and financial landscape of their respective communities. Their loss or diminishment will have serious ripple effects. As programs get reduced or cut, so too may salaries, which impact grocers, restaurants, auto shops, tithing and other charitable giving.
With all this in mind, we implore you, sir, to consider the following proposal:
Gov. DeSantis, we the undersigned Fringe Festivals, which remain committed to providing inclusive spaces for artists and audiences, agree on a non-precedent-setting basis, to forgo the 2025 state grants that were approved for us in order to facilitate the restoration of the remaining Legislature-approved arts and culture funding, provided you champion a successful reversal or override of the veto. In addition, we will welcome and host you, your family, and some of your aides when you attend our festivals in 2025, and we ask that you reciprocate by welcoming and hosting us in October or November 2024 so that we can build bridges of understanding and deepen your familiarity with the benefits of arts and culture investments, thus empowering you to be an impassioned advocate.
In that the fiscal year of many arts and culture organizations began July 1, time is of the essence. We look forward to working with you for the betterment of all Florida citizens.
Respectfully,
Scott Galbraith, Interim Executive Director, The Orlando Fringe

New lawsuit says DeSantis disenfranchised voters by suspending Orlando state attorney Monique Worrell, downtown parking restrictions lifted as quietly as they were instated, e-scooters hit I-Drive and other news you may have missed.
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER, ZOEY THOMAS, AND THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
» Downtown nighttime parking restrictions in Orlando are no more
The City of Orlando alarmed downtown patrons in early May by limiting nighttime parking as part of ongoing safety measures. Now, the city is saying the restriction was in place for only one weekend. City staff, along with the Orlando Police Department, quietly put in place a ban on entry and reentry to downtown parking garages after 11 p.m. starting Friday, May 10, and downtown businesses and patrons were left to believe the change had no end date, concerning business owners and their staff. The move echoed a series of new downtown safety policies, including requiring special permits for late-night alcohol sales and adjusting the noise ordinance, passed around the same time. But two months later, the restriction is no longer in effect. The city made no public announcement about the change, and a spokesperson did not elaborate on why the change was made for that weekend in May. The city spokesperson also did not answer the question of why the city failed to clarify the confusion resulting from the policy.
» Orange County will bring new electric scooter program to I-Drive Through a new “micromobility” partnership, Orange County is looking to give locals and visitors a low-cost option for navigating the pedestrian-unfriendly International Drive corridor. The county is partnering with electric scooter companies Lime and Bird to deploy about 200 electric scooters between Carrier Drive and Destination Parkway. The stretch includes popular attractions like Icon Park, Wonderworks Orlando, Dave & Buster’s and Andretti Indoor Karting & Games. There will be 10 parking locations for the scooters, which can be rented by riders age 18 or older. Orange County project coordinator Luz Munoz shared in a prepared statement that they’re thrilled to witness the program’s soft launch, and consider it a commitment to improving the county’s environmental footprint. Within the city of Orlando, residents have long been concerned about the city’s overreliance on car travel. Orange County’s launch is limited to the International Drive corridor for now, but if the program is successful, it could be expanded into other parts of unincorporated Orange County. The city of Orlando introduced electric scooters in to downtown Orlando five years ago.
» Orlando poverty aid group launches campaign to repair damaged roof United Against Poverty Orlando closed its medical clinic wing and emergency food pantry earlier this month after a storm caved in part of the building’s roof. The local nonprofit, which sees about 450 to 550 individuals per day, operates out of an old building at 150 W. Michigan St. with a roof that is “getting worse by the day,” the organization announced on its website. Repairing the storm-damaged section of the roof will require $20,000, but making all necessary repairs to the roof could cost up to $150,000, the group shared. UP Orlando has raised slightly under $113,000, or about three-quarters of its $150,000 goal, as of July 11. The damage was mostly concentrated in the organization’s Life Enrichment Center, which houses its crisis stabilization program. In 2022, the program served more than 1,300 households, including through an urgent care clinic, emergency food pantry and computer lab. The Orlando Sentinel reported that most of these services have been shut down since the roof collapse.
» New peer respite program opens in Orlando, a first for Central Florida
A new mental health peer respite has opened its doors in Orlando, the first of its kind in Central Florida and one of just about 40 or so nationwide. Eva’s Casita, operated by local nonprofit Peer Support Space, is a non-medical residence that relies on peer-led interventions. The small, three-bedroom center in the SoDo district is staffed 24/7 by a peer support specialist and broadly seeks to offer a safe, nonjudgmental and noncoercive space for people who are struggling with mental health challenges. It’s not meant for people who are unstable or an imminent danger to themselves or others. Yasmin Flasterstein, a mental health advocate and co-founder of Peer Support Space who worked on the mental health response team after the Pulse nightclub tragedy, said the respite aims to help fill the gaps in the local mental healthcare system. Research has found that peer respites are cost-effective and can reduce the need for intensive inpatient or emergency treatment for mental health or substance misuse. They’re not meant as a replacement for other evidence-based mental health services. While Florida Gov. DeSantis vetoed requested funding to help support the program this year, Orange County — and private donors — have helped provide the
funds to make the respite possible. The group is also looking for more sponsors, and accepts donations of supplies and volunteer services.
» Revised lawsuit says DeSantis ‘disenfranchised’ voters by suspending Orlando-area state attorney
Arguing that Gov. Ron DeSantis’ suspension of Orlando-area State Attorney Monique Worrell “disenfranchised” voters, a revised federal lawsuit alleges that DeSantis’ decision violated due-process and First Amendment rights. Attorneys for voters David Caicedo and Rajib Chowdhury and the group Florida Rising together filed the revised case June 28 in Orlando after U.S. District Judge Julie Sneed in May dismissed an earlier version. DeSantis last August issued an executive order suspending Worrell, a Democrat who was elected in 2020 in the 9th Judicial Circuit, which covers Orange and Osceola counties. Among other things, the executive order alleged that Worrell’s policies prevented or discouraged assistant state attorneys from seeking minimum mandatory sentences for gun crimes and drug trafficking offenses. But the revised lawsuit said that in “following through on her campaign promises to reform the criminal legal system, Ms. Worrell was doing nothing other than meeting her professional and ethical obligations and exercising her prosecutorial discretion.” It alleges that the suspension violated voters’ due-process and First Amendment rights and seeks to have DeSantis’ executive order declared unconstitutional. While Sneed dismissed the initial version of the lawsuit, she said the plaintiffs could file an amended complaint. DeSantis appointed Andrew Bain, who had served as an Orange County judge, to replace Worrell as state attorney. Worrell is again running for the position in the November election.
TROPICALLY DEPRESSING
Florida resident Donald Trump continues to dodge questions on climate change, despite its already disastrous effects on the state
BY CRAIG PITTMAN
Fourth of July feels like a long time ago, but let’s talk about something else that caused some fireworks that week.
There was a debate that created a bit of an uproar. One of the participants had a sore throat and a stutter, which led some n-n-nervous Nellies to say he should drop out.
I wasn’t watching him, though. I was watching the other guy — you know, the convicted felon from Florida.
Someone I know complained that during the debate, Donald Trump spat out lies like
a machine gun spits out bullets. But that rata-tat of fabrications wasn’t what caught my attention, either.
No, I was watching for the questions from the two CNN moderators that this ex-reality show host didn’t want to answer. Normally he blathers along whether he knows what he’s talking about or not. For example, look at his rambling story about electric boats and sharks.
What I was looking for were issues where he knew even a lie could be dangerous, so he evaded the question.
There were four questions where he would’ve made the crusty old coach from the movie Dodgeball proud of how he followed the five D’s: dodge, dip, duck, dive and dodge.
Three were about child care, fentanyl and accepting the 2024 election results even if he loses. The fourth concerned climate change.
The response he delivered to that one was a doozy — the kind of non-answer so off-thewall you wonder if you heard right. To be sure, I checked the official transcript.
Moderator Dana Bash noted that 2023 was
the hottest year on record and cities across the country have been coping with “extreme heat, intensifying wildfires, stronger hurricanes and rising sea levels.”
Then she said, “Former President Trump, you’ve vowed to end your opponent’s climate initiatives. But will you take any action as President to slow the climate crisis?”
Instead of replying, he talked about everything else he could think of. He talked about criminal justice reform and historically black colleges. He praised Sen. Tim Scott’s disastrous opportunity zone program. He claimed millions of illegal immigrants are pouring across the border (they’re not).
When he finished dishing out that heaping helping of word salad, Bash said, “Thirty-eight seconds left, President Trump. Will you take any action as president to slow the climate crisis?” Trump dodged again.
“So, I want absolutely immaculate clean water and I want absolutely clean air, and we had it,” he babbled. “We had H2O.”

[ continued from page 11 ]
H2O? You mean you had water? Did you use two hands to drink it?
I think that was when I started humming the Bee Gees hit “Jive Talking.”
But Trump wasn’t done with his ridiculous response.
“We had the best numbers ever,” he said, without specifying what kind of numbers he meant. Prime? Ratings? Octane? “And we did — we were using all forms of energy, all forms, everything. And yet, during my four years, I had the best environmental numbers ever. And my top environmental people gave me that statistic just before I walked on the stage, actually.”
Instead of pointing out that Trump had again evaded the question, Bash and co-moderator Jake Tapper turned to President Joe Biden. He sputtered, “I don’t know where the hell he has been.”
I’ll tell you where he’s been: hiding from the truth. Because nowhere is climate change more obvious than here in Florida, no matter what our governor and Legislature say.
You can even see it from Mar-a-Lago.
Very costly and disruptive
As with abortion, Trump has over the years taken more than one position on fighting climate change. Like John Kerry on Afghanistan and Iraq, he was for it before he was against it.
In 2009, for instance, he signed onto a letter from business leaders to then-President Obama that called for passage of climate legislation, investment in clean energy and leadership to inspire the rest of the world to join the fight against climate change (i.e., Biden’s record).
When he ran for president the first time in 2016, he told us voters that climate change was “a total hoax” and “pseudoscience.” Meanwhile, though, he was applying for a permit to build a 2-mile-long rock wall to protect his seaside golf resort in Ireland from “global warming and its effects.”
When the Electoral College put him in office (despite losing the popular vote), he did his best to shut down federal efforts to wean the U.S. from fossil fuels. I don’t just mean pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accords, either. (After all, those restrictions are voluntary.)
He pushed for utilities to burn more “clean, beautiful coal,” even though burning coal does NOT lead to “absolutely clean air.”
He rolled back the offshore drilling rules put in place after the BP oil spill.
Despite his promise to “drain the swamp,” he hired ex-lobbyists and corporate lawyers for polluters such as the oil and gas industry to lead the federal agencies concerned with regulating pollution. Fox, meet henhouse.
Scientists tried to convince him that he was wrong on climate change. One group of 26 Florida scientists sent him a letter offering to meet with him. They explained that climate change leads to an increase in severe weather,
sea level rise, coral bleaching and the spread of tropical diseases like Zika, West Nile virus and dengue fever — all occurring in or near Florida.
I talked to one of the letter’s signers, Jeff Chanton of Florida State University. He told me they never got any response from Trump, who prefers yes-men who jump to do his bidding or random people who call him “sir” with tears in their eyes.
Like a little dog sitting in the middle of a house fire, Trump seems to think “this is fine.”
If they’d been able to talk to Trump, Chanton said, they would have explained how natural phenomena such as seasonal temperature changes have been thrown off by human pollution of the atmosphere. He noted how the hyper-heated ocean water turned Beryl from a tropical depression into a monstrous Category 5 hurricane ripping through the Caribbean in a matter of 42 hours. Climate disruption isn’t cheap to deal with.
“It’s very costly and very disruptive and it’s going to affect the economy and how people live,” he told me.
The lack of a response from Trump, he said, was similar to the time he and a smaller group of scientists met with another denier, then-Gov. Rick “I Wear This Navy Hat Because My Waterfront Mansion Will Soon Float Away” Scott.
The future senator hustled them out of his office in less than 30 minutes and didn’t change his tune. Now he’s endorsed Trump for reelection. They both own oceanfront homes, but only one seems to be in danger from rising seas.
Like a frog on a lily pad
Trump purchased the Palm Beach mansion called Mar-a-Lago in 1985 but didn’t move in. It was just an ostentations vacation home, one created for cereal heir Marjorie Merriwether Post by the set designer for theatrical impresario Flo Ziegfield.
Mired in financial difficulties in 1994, Trump turned it into a private club where people paid for memberships. When he became president, it became his Winter White House. Finally, in 2019, he declared it his official residence, following other brash Noo Yawkers who’ve relocated to the Sunshine State.
I have a theory that this is why he lost in 2020. No one from Florida has ever been elected president. Of course, it could also be a widespread rejection of his dismal presidential record. Either way, once he was pushed out (despite his insurrectionist efforts), he retreated to a home on an island, to live in a building named “sea to lake.”
Curious about Mar-a-Lago’s vulnerability to rising seas, I contacted Les Standiford, author of a wonderful history of the place called Palm Beach, Mar-a-Lago, and the Rise of America’s Xanadu. If you’d like to know more about America’s most glamorous crime scene, you should read it.
Standiford told me Trump is unlikely to see any personal consequences for his work accelerating climate change. It will swamp the property, but not the house.
“Worst-case scenario for the end of the century is five or six feet of sea level rise, so the structure of Mar-a-Lago is probably safe, though there wouldn’t be much by way of beach and it’s going to lose a lot of its grounds,” Standiford said.
With his mansion safe, Trump will still feel invincible in the face of the elements. Remember, he told the Conservative Political Action Committee in 2022 that rising sea levels are just “giving you slightly more seafront property.”
“Thus,” Standiford continued, “since we know Mr. Trump is exempt from the laws that govern the rest of humanity, we can expect him to be perched there like a frog on a lily pad in the year 2100 at the age of 154.”
But the rest of Palm Beach County won’t be so lucky.
‘This is fine’
The reason Trump wouldn’t respond to that debate question is because the answer would be a flat-out no. He won’t do a single thing to combat climate change. He knows if he’d said that on TV, it might alienate undecided voters.
He’s been begging oil industry execs to plunk down a billion or so to fuel his campaign in exchange for him rolling back every climate-related rule from Biden. His own website says he wants to revive the days of “drill, baby, drill,” returning us to the lack of oversight that led to the BP oil spill.
“On Day One, President Trump will rescind every one of Joe Biden’s industry-killing, jobs-killing, pro-China, and anti-American electricity regulations,” the website says. It neglects to mention that the U.S. oil and gas industry has produced more crude than any other nation during Biden’s term in office.
Once the debate was over, Trump went back to mocking climate concerns.
“Global warming is fine,” he said at a Virginia rally on June 28. “I heard it was going to be very warm today. It’s fine.”
Trump didn’t realize it, but he was echoing
the popular meme of the little dog sitting in the middle of a house fire murmuring, “This is fine.” But it’s not fine. At a rally in Arizona last month, nearly a dozen Trump supporters passed out from the extreme heat.
Usually when I look at Trump’s elaborate combover and hear his apocalyptic squawk, he reminds me of a different pop culture figure: Immortan Joe from Mad Max: Fury Road, bellowing to the water-starved multitude, “I am your redeemer! It is by my hand that you arise from the ashes of this world!”
But the world we live in isn’t starved for H2O. The stuff is steadily rising over the land, especially in super-flat Florida. Just talk to the resilience director of Palm Beach County, Megan Houston.
When I asked her what impacts from climate change they’re already experiencing in Palm Beach, she said,“Extreme heat, sea level rise, rainfall-induced flooding and shoreline recession are some of the current impacts we face.”
How hot is it? “Palm Beach County’s annual average temperature has increased 2.3 degrees since 1895,” the Palm Beach Post reported five years ago.
That warmer air holds more moisture, which is why torrential rains are more likely. Remember last year when Fort Lauderdale was hit by a “rain-bomb” that broke records for a 24-hour event? It was preceded by something similar in Palm Beach.
So much rain fell there in 24 hours that it broke a record set in 1897. There were “tropical storm-force gusts, sprinkles of ice, and booming thunder,” thanks to “an explosive 35,069 lightning events,” the Palm Beach Post reported.
Trump reeeeally hates the rain. I don’t know if it’s because he fears his combover will come undone or he’s allergic to the smell of petrichor. But he hates it more than soul singer Ann Peebles, who recorded “I Can’t Stand the Rain.” Remember in 2018 when he skipped a ceremony to honor fallen World War I soldiers in France because of a downpour? He sent his chief of staff, retired Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly, who later said that Trump called those dead Marines “suckers” and “losers.”
My suggestion is to hold the next debate in Florida on a day when the forecast calls for 100 percent precipitation, which in the summer happens a lot. Let’s see if he even shows up. If he does, then ask that sucker and loser those questions he dodged last time.

Even if the world outside is burning, all you’ll hear is jazz at the Ren’s latest immersive entertainment, throwback cabaret ’24
Right now, Renaissance Theatre Co. co-founder Donald Rupe and choreographer Jakob Karr are in New York City, as their shows From Here and Ain’t Done Bad are both currently joining the long list of acclaimed productions which originated at the Orlando Fringe Festival, and have gone on to successful off-Broadway productions. (Somebody ought to inform our sex-obsessed Governor.)
Fortunately, that doesn’t mean the pair has forsaken Orlando, rendering us bereft of the Ren’s signature brand of immersive entertainment during this sultry summer. To the contrary, the duo has left behind a thrilling theatrical time portal that’s transporting patrons across a century, to an era of Prohibition and protests. Pull out your best beaded flapper gown or snap on your snazziest suspenders, because you’re going to want to look the part when you travel to the world of ’24. Merging the vintage nightclub milieu of their 2023 discotheque-themed production 54 and the Sleep No More-influenced eeriness of their annual Nosferatu, ’24 builds on the Ren’s established mix of intimate interactions and high-intensity spectacle. This time, the venue has been revamped into a den of Art Deco decadence, where the audience is surrounded within a multilayered tale — co-created by director Rupe and playwright/performer Adonis Perez-Escobar — that infuses elements of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange into the hedonistic aesthetic associated with Roaring ’20s.
Those who attend ’24 are urged by its creators not to reveal any of the show’s many secrets, but suffice it to say that if you are expecting a simple Chicago-style throwback cabaret, prepare yourself for a much more ambitiously genre-bending adventure. Arriving audience members first
enter the building broken into small groups, and are initially guided through a sequence of gritty urban environments (designed by Kurt Boetcher, Cody Lang and Josh Moran; lighting by Ben Lowe) by some scene-setting characters. You ultimately enter an apparent laundromat, where a secret password is required to progress into Paradise; I fumbled my Latin pronunciation, and was left behind for a virtual one-on-one encounter with the show’s mysterious antagonist before being allowed to continue further.
After that introductory ordeal, hopeful acolytes at last enter an opulent performance hall, which has been redecorated with disturbingly sensual murals and hammered tin textures that teem with all-seeing-eyeball iconography. More performers circulate the space, making expository small talk with the guests and each other, as the “Mother’s Milk” cocktail bar shakes up libations. I wouldn’t want to reveal exactly what occurs during the central 70-ish minutes of mainstage entertainment, but I can hint that you may catch a cultish Suspiria-meets-Midsommar vibe from the aggressively enthusiastic emcee (Lorena Cohea) and her revved-up revelers (featuring Gregg Baker Jr., Abby Cash, Bryan De Souza, Rachel Ihasz, David Lowe, Reed Rockefeller and a half-dozen others), who are all ringing in the imminent new year with a riotous ritual that’s equal parts ebullient and ominous. Whether or not you appreciate the world-building, you’re certain to be swept up in the celebratory spirit, thanks largely to the
original score of boisterous jazz-inflected songs by vocal director Will Scott with musicians Bryce Hayes and Matt Lynx, whose four-person live ensemble blasts the audience with the brassy energy of an entire Sam Rivers-style big band. In fact, this killer quartet hits so hard that lyrics (sung by Shannon Guinn, Iris M. Johnson and Anastasia Remoundos) are often overwhelmed. However, my acoustical complaints were easily outweighed by the spectacular sight of nearly a dozen dynamic dancers (including Adonus Mabry, Oliver Morris and aerialist Jules Botticello) shimmying in J. Marie Bailey’s shimmering costumes to Karr’s athletic choreography. To be honest, ’24’s intricate backstory could use a little room to breathe, and I wish there were more time to explore the characters’ intriguing interconnections beyond brief, tantalizing tidbits. I ultimately exited somewhat uncertain about the artistic intention behind some of ’24’s narrative twists and turns; perhaps some of my questions might have been resolved if I’d stuck around for the optional Chateau Renaissance drag after-party. Even so, I have to applaud the Ren for once again creating an another undeniably unique experience that intoxicates with its atmosphere as much as its cocktails.
I heartily recommend ordering the New Old Fashioned with whiskey and ginger liquor and settling into a comfy armchair, because — as a slogan seen in the show says — the world outside is burning, but all I hear is jazz. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.
BY STEVE SCHNEIDER
Premieres Wednesday:
The Green Glove Gang 2 — The Polish lady thieves come out of retirement to protect one of their sons from a dangerous criminal. And just you watch, he still isn’t going to help them program the remote. (Netflix)
Simone Biles Rising — The controversial gymnast is seen readying for this year’s Olympics in four documentary episodes. Or maybe fewer, because you know how she rolls! (Netflix)
T • P BON Season 2 — Bon became an official Time Patrol agent at the end of Season 1, so expect to see him taking on all the standard responsibilities now. Like making sure Deadpool picks up River Song’s laundry and stuff. (Netflix)
UnPrisoned — In Season 2, the members of the Alexander family try to solve their dysfunction once and for all by hiring a professional healing coach. Maybe they should have just waited for society to catch up, because being a convicted felon like their Dad is apparently the key to upward mobility now. (Hulu)
Premieres Thursday:
Cobra Kai — Part I of the show’s sixth and final season shows the Miyagi Do crew wondering
if they’ll even compete in the upcoming Sekai Taikai International Karate Tournament, since their enemies have essentially been neutralized on the Valley scene. Well, they could always take up lacrosse. (Netflix)
How I Caught My Killer Season 2 — Ten new episodes tell the amazing stories of victims who managed to leave a record of their own murder. But I still say televised debates are essential to a functioning democracy. (Hulu)
Kite Man: Hell Yeah! — The first spin-off from the irreverent Harley Quinn shows the addlebrained title character and his wife running a dive bar that’s pitched as “Cheers for supervillains.” At least now we know where the old Wally’s crowd went after the place got gentrified. (Max)
Master of the House — The death of a Thai diamond magnate inspires some consternation on the part of his greedy heirs, particularly as one of his final acts was to marry his housekeeper. Hey, it’s not like he left everything to his pet capybara or something. (Although what a Disney+ show that would make!) (Netflix)
Those About to Die — Roland Emmerich directs a sword-and-sandal series set in the days of the Roman gladiators, with Sir Anthony Hopkins
as Emperor Vespasian, founder of the Flavian dynasty. I wanna see Chris Redd cameo as his comic hype man, Flavia Flav. (Peacock)
Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper — Creator and showrunner Paneet Krishna (Mirzapur) brings us a wacky comedy series that pits an ordinary accountant against gangsters posing as confectioners. And believe me, you don’t wanna mess with those guys, because they take the cannoli and the gun. (Netflix)
Premieres Friday:
Betty la Fea, The Story Continues — Ana María Orozco is back as Betty in a sequel series to the telenovela that gave birth to ABC’s Ugly Betty. Twenty years later, Betty has a strained relationship with her teenage daughter and is starting to regret marrying her boss. Like Mika Brzezinski wasn’t enough of a cautionary tale? (Prime Video)
Find Me Falling — Harry Connick Jr. plays a faded rock star whose desire to lick his wounds in private after a failed comeback attempt is trampled on by unexpected visitors to his island home. Ooh, unexpected visitors! Such a tragedy! Do you know what Garth Brooks would have given to have somebody drop by and check on him after Chris Gaines? (Netflix)
Lady in the Lake — The novel by Laura Lippman yields a limited series set in the Baltimore of 1966, where a crusading journalist sacrifices her personal life to investigate an unsolved murder. The adaptation delves into several controversial subject areas, like race relations and how much Natalie Portman it’s fair to make an audience put up with. (Apple TV+)
LALIGA: All Access — Spain’s first sports docuseries takes us behind the scenes of the top
professional men’s division in that country’s football system. Issues explored include mental health, ageism and what the hell Natalie Portman is doing in here too. (Netflix)
Omnivore — Chef René Redzepi examines the eight ingredients that are most common to the world’s diet. At least it was eight before we lost those Cheddar Bay Biscuits. (Apple TV+)
Skywalkers: A Love Story — A Russian couple whose hobby is climbing the world’s tallest buildings are the central figures in a documentary that’s certain to exacerbate your two biggest fears: heights and commitment. (Netflix)
Sweet Home — The third and final season of the Korean apocalypse drama has us wondering if humanity can even survive, what with “monsterization” coming for just about everybody — right on down to our hero Hyun-su (Song Kang). Listen, that’s nothing: I once had a perfectly normal roommate who got into Phish. (Netflix)
Too Hot to Handle — Season 6 makes major changes to the game’s format, with the contestants now fully forewarned they’ll be expected to abstain from sex if they want to win. Expect a gripping, pitched battle between Mormons who aren’t married and Jewish women who are. (Netflix)
Premieres Tuesday:
Dress My Tour — Kate Upton hosts a kind of Project Runway for the Pollstar set, with 11 designers creating roadworthy fashions for the likes of JoJo Siwa, Paula Abdul, Toni Braxton and Ty Dolla $ign. Meanwhile, whoever was hired to do wardrobe for J.Lo’s tour is trying to return 4,000 bolts of chiffon to Jo-Ann’s. (Hulu)

LADY SUNDAY
Central Floridian jazz and neo-soul dynamo Kristen Warren takes the stage with Creek at Judson’s
BY MATTHEW MOYER
Jazz and neo-soul chanteuse Kristen Warren should be a familiar face — and voice — for music-attuned Orlandoans. She’s been effortlessly crossing scenes, playing diverse stages and collaborating with heavyweights both local (Swamburger) and national (Blueprint) since about 2011.
But the last couple of years, in particular, have been something of a renaissance for Warren. The momentum is only building from here for Warren, a creative polymath along the lines of an Erykah Badu. Giving a TED Talk? Check. Using hip-hop to educate about climate change? Check check. Starting an arts organization to platform Black voices? Check check check.
Warren seems a constant blur of motion and hustle, so this Sunday’s gig at Judson’s Live is a great chance to catch up with her in a more relaxed setting. Warren and backing band Creek — an all-star “swamp-jazz” trio that includes Orlando bassist Thomas Milovac, keyboardist Daniel Tenbusch on keys and Ashton-Bailey-Gould on drums — play two sets for an R&B brunch at the new Dr. Phillips Center venue. The cabaret aesthetics blend pretty perfectly with the smoky sounds Warren and co. have loaned us.
“We’re going to do some classic R&B along with some originals, and we’re gonna mix it with some jazz standards as well,” says Warren of the

hearing it at the same time I perform it, there’s this exchange of energy. All of a sudden, we’re all on one wavelength.”
For the purposes of this article, we’re more focused on Kristen Warren circa the now, summer 2024 — because there’s a lot going on — but she’s been on the scene for awhile now, trying her hand at a little bit of everything. She’s also played the Florida Music Festival, Fusion Fest, Melrose in the Mix, Lil Indie’s, Soundbar. And though she lives in Melbourne, she has continually taken inspiration from the creative energy in Orlando’s music and arts scene. She calls Orlando her “favorite city to play.”
“My first show in Orlando was in 2011. It was curated by Swamburger at Blank Space. RIP Blank Space, it was so cute. It was called Please Listen To My Demo. I was so nervous. This was mostly a hip-hop crowd in Orlando, which is ultimately the scene that adopted me. The rappers loved me and I did a little set of, I think, two songs. And it was, like, instant adoption.”
Live
plan for Sunday. “We’re going to do some neosoul a mixture of R&B and jazz. So it’s a perfect marriage of everything that I do.”
Warren and Creek make for an ideal pairing, all creatively dynamic musicians operating in the spaces between jazz and rock and soul, eager to switch the sound up at a moment’s notice — their locked-in interplay nearing the telepathic. Fittingly, they came together in a time of worldwide flux and change.
“We all met in the drummer’s garage probably four years ago in the thick of the pandemic. And a lot of the first gigs we played together, everybody was in masks! Well, except for me, because I couldn’t sing in a mask,” remembers Warren about formative garage jams.“Pretty much since 2020, we’ve been traveling and playing together. And when Judson’s came about, it’s definitely kind of a big deal for us, because this is a place that we wanted to play for a while.”
Warren speaks of the creative dynamic between herself and the players in Creek like that of a family, savoring the bird-on-a-wire spirit that all involved embrace musically.
“There’s just this kind of unspoken thing that happens with us, we just vibe very well,” says Warren. “We’re all jazz heads. And all of us were brought up listening to all kinds of music, so it was really easy for us to gel in that way. We
all really trust each other creatively. Getting up there, we just follow each other and we trust each other. So if they want to do a funk break in the middle of a song, then we’re going to do that … One of the first rules of improv is that you never, whatever your partner says in the scene, say no. You go with it. And that’s true also in jazz; whatever your partner is saying musically, you never say no, because that ruins it, right?
“And I just love watching Creek play. They’re like a little band of brothers, and they’re amazing. The chemistry on stage is really special.”
This writer has only seen Warren live once, and it was with Creek. But it was also at Uncle Lou’s on a raucous post-Christmas evening of celebration for Milovac’s birthday. Spirits were high, the vibe in the bar was a little chaotic [often the case, not a bad thing] but Warren, perched on a stool with a sprig of flowers adorning her hair, came off like musical royalty. Playing any stage, or any floor, is meaningful to her.
“The stage is my home. That is probably where I’m most comfortable,” she says. “In person, I’m pretty awkward. I prefer intimate spaces as far as shows go. Big stages are cool too, but that is my comfort zone. As long as I am able to make that connection with the audience, then I’m comfortable. … The beauty of music is that it speaks to people. It connects instantly. Because everybody’s
Fast-forward over a decade later, Warren is trying out new material with new collaborators and there’s a very distinct sense that she’s fully come into her own with momentum on her side.
“I was able to go to London for TED. I got involved with TED out there, so I was able to do original music at TED Studios in New York,” she marvels. “I recently headlined Space Coast Music Festival, which was absolutely surreal. And then I’ve started to frequent Nashville, so that’s been really cool. I’m up there every few months at Rudy’s Jazz Room, so I’m beginning now to develop a following in a new city … I’m in the process of releasing some soul music this year as well. I’m trying to make some progress. It’s a hustle, you know.”
The final, and very important piece, in Warren’s creative endeavors at present is arts amplifier Black Box Blackout — a community-minded organization and arts incubator dedicated to championing Black artists. Though she founded the organization in Melbourne, this year she started making inroads toward establishing a Black Box Blackout presence in Orlando with the “You’re Invited to the Barbecue”mini-fest, only the first in a series of happenings she’d like to stage.
“Black Box Blackout was something that I created in 2022 all about uplifting Black creatives,” says Warren. “What we’re hoping is to establish something out in Orlando too, and to just continue to find ways to give platform and voice to an underrepresented group. And Orlando is the perfect place to do that, because, like I said, it’s insane the amount of talent here.”

The issue of an album being one-note is where I part company from many fellow critics and serious music heads. In my calculus, being onenote is only a problem if that note’s bad. Central Florida band Virginity, it seems, understand this primal truth.
Following up on their well-received 2021 album, POPMORTEM , Virginity have come out more even-handed and even stronger with brand-new release Bad Jazz. While they’ve long described themselves as a “rock band just trying to be Superdrag,” this is the album where Virginity have pulled it together to finally validate that, and it’s a jackpot for those who like their melodies as big as their guitars.
Indeed, Bad Jazz is the sound of Virginity fully and gloriously indulging their Superdrag jones. Like those 1990s indie-rock heroes, this album throws the throttle wide open with a beaming blend of beefy guitars and huge power-pop hooks. Across 11 sturdy hits, this collection is remarkably surefooted and consistent, riding a sweet spot that keeps the spirits high and the rock booming.
You want an odyssey? Enjoy your prog opera, nerd. But if you wanna roll down the windows
Bad Jazz is streaming everywhere. The album’s also available on limited-edition colored vinyl through Orlando’s Smartpunk Records. Moreover, it’s getting a special pressing by esteemed tastemaker label Rough Trade, for which the band will be flying up to New York City for a signing and performance at Rough Trade’s flagship store at Rockefeller Center.
Here at home, Virginity’s upcoming album release show is at Will’s Pub (7 p.m. Saturday, July 27, $10-$15), where they’ll perform alongside Rickolus, Debt Neglector, The 4Js and comedians Shaw Smith, Larry Fulford and Roger Staton.
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Wetflix, Nick & the Izzy’s, Sweater, The Troops: Moxie Booking’s latest showcase presents the ultimate face-off between hardcore and egg punk, a divide so at the core of punk rock that this showdown may just destroy punk as we know it. Representing the eggs will be Miami’s Wetflix and Jacksonville’s Nick & the Izzy’s. In the hardcore corner will be Jacksonville’s Sweater and Miami’s The Troops. Guys, the future of the union of punk is at stake here. OK, looks like I may’ve gotten my music and democracy notes scrambled somewhere in all this, but I’m pretty sure this’ll be a killer show with lots of Orlando debuts either way. (8 p.m. Friday, July 19, Uncle Lou’s, $10-$15)
While Orlando’s Virginity have long described themselves as a “rock band just trying to be Superdrag,”
Bad Jazz is the album where Virginity have pulled it together to finally validate that, and it’s a jackpot for those who like their melodies as big as their guitars
and crank it up, then Bad Jazz is your record. Ain’t no ballads or filler in here — just big, bright jams that kick right out the gate and don’t let off the pedal until it’s done. Yes, Bad Jazz is the perfect summer rocker, and it’s Virginity’s best record yet.
Bobby Clock memorial show: Occurring on the fifth anniversary of his untimely passing, this special local event will celebrate the memory of Orlando outsider-rock prince Bobby Clock. Headlining are garage rockers Los Jarritos, the spinoff band formed by Clock’s Soda Pops bandmates Ray Brazen and Cesar Marquez. Also on the bill will be the warped sound manipulations of Joshua Rogers’ Black Wick. Throughout the night, expect surprise guest performances and fitting tributes from the assembled. Knowing the illustrious company that Clock kept, this will be a procession as heartfelt as it is strange. Miss you, Bobby. (8 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, Uncle Lou’s, free)
Lamb of God, Mastodon, Kerry King, Malevolence: The “Ashes of Leviathan” tour featuring Lamb of God and Mastodon is one blockbuster bill that can lay claim to being both this summer’s biggest and best heavy-metal ticket. These masters of American metal are both bands who kept it true even after they reached crossover status. Making this tour especially momentous is that they’re both celebrating the 20th anniversary of their respective magnum opuses. Lamb of God’s Ashes of the Wake and Mastodon’s Leviathan are two masterpieces of modern metal, and the bands are performing those albums in their entirety. Supporting will be co-founding Slayer guitarist Kerry King and British metalcore band Malevolence. (5 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, Orlando Amphitheater, $53.50-$268.50) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

FRIDAY, JULY 19
X Dirty Fingers/Confession Kids
“To live outside the law you must be honest”: Thus spake one folk firebrand named Bob Dylan a lifetime ago. If that applied to Dylan and his creative comrades back then, it certainly applies even more now to modern Orlando folk-punk outsiders X-Dirty Fingers. The duo of (no last names, please) Ali and Taryn — an outspoken trans woman — are unabashedly working-class, queer, progressive and ready to sing in a workers’ utopia far off and obscured behind capitalist smog. Wielding guitars, banjos, Taryn’s voice and that’s it, this is a band living happily outside the lines. They’re currently touring with Gainesville’s Confession Kids, who bested illness to rejoin this touring party. And they’re bringing a strident Mountain Goats-meets-Kirsty MacColl sound and righteously angry yet hopeful songs. Opening are Holly Pocket and Holding On For Dear Life. No frills needed. 7 p.m., Stardust Video & Coffee, 1842 E. Winter Park Road, stardustvideoandcoffee. wordpress.com, $10. — Matthew Moyer
FRIDAY-SATURDAY, JULY 19-20
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Rocky Horror Picture Show takes over Fringe ArtSpace downtown this weekend, and attendees should have their black eyeliner, rice and singing voices ready. A shadow cast from The Rich Weirdoes, an Orlando-based group that has been presenting Rocky for over 20 years locally, will perform in sync alongside the 1975 campy midnight movie horror-musical. But the actors won’t be the only ones performing. Rocky is a fully interactive audience participation film, so attendees can joke, gag and mime along with the cast. Audience members can even bring items to throw in the theater — although water guns, lighters and “wet foods” are prohibited, so leave the hot dogs at home. This will be among the first events at ArtSpace after the venue closed for
flooding in late June. 8 p.m., Fringe Artspace, 54 W. Church St., orlandofringe.org/artspace, $18. — Zoey Thomas

Asia
This prog-rock supertour is, fittingly for the head-spinning density of the participants’ music, on just the right side of almost “too much” an embarrassment of riches. The “Heat of The Moment” tour, curated by musical Zelig Geoff Downes (of Buggles and Yes infamy), features Downes’ breakthrough band, Asia, as well as Dutch progressive-jazz maestros Focus, Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash and U.K. folk-prog armada Curved Air — whose frontperson, Sonja Kristina, inspired the likes of Siouxsie and Kate Bush. (Yes, ma’am!) For his part, Downes —a restless and boundary-pushing keyboard/synth player — brings to Orlando the latest lineup of Asia, and they’ll be proffering lethal 1980s progpop heaters like “Heat of the Moment” and “Only Time Will Tell” along with a vast catalog of old and newer material. The MC of the evening is artist Roger Dean, best known for his album artwork for Yes, Asia and Uriah Heep. Get over any musty punk prejudices and prepare to head into space. 7 p.m., Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd., hardrock.com, $55-$99. — MM

DIIV
DIIV’s North American headlining tour pedals into Orlando this weekend. Last autumn, the Brooklyn indie-shoegazers opened for Depeche Mode at the Kia Center, but this time DIIV take the stage in a more intimate venue. After a five-year wait for a new album, their recent Frog in Boiling Water delivers the goods with lush reverb, melancholic dream-pop vocals and somber melodies, all making for a shoegazer’s paradise. With touring

Idobi Summer School Tour
Idobi Radio Summer School, a new touring mini-festival, comes to Orlando this weekend, aiming to give some promising new bands a spotlight and introduction to new audiences around the country. The tour’s lineup includes Stand Atlantic, The Home Team, Scene Queen, Magnolia Park, Honey Revenge and Letdown. In particular, Orlando natives Magnolia Park cover heavy topics of mental health and relationships through even heavier, direct rock. From pop-punk to heavy pop and from metalcore to alternative indie, these newer artists offer a little something for everyone. Founded by music biz heavyweights Eric Tobin, Michael Kaminsky and Kevin Lyman, Idobi Radio Summer School works with independent artists and labels with the end goal of boosting and supporting a group of promising young acts. The founders hope to create a situation where these artists can be experienced for a lower price point. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold go to the Save the Music Foundation. 4:30 p.m., The Vanguard, 578 N. Orange Ave., thevanguard.live, $35-$40. — Sarah Lynott

Janet Jackson
Clearly eager for a repeat of her sold-out “Together Again” show at the Kia Center in 2023, Janet Jackson is back in Orlando on Saturday with a sequel, “Together Again 2024.”
With Florida stops in Tampa, West Palm and Orlando, Miss Jackson is bringing several decades’ worth of R&B crossover hits to the Sunshine State. The 10th child of the famed Jackson family, she has been releasing music since the 1980s and has sold more than 100 million records around the world. You know the hits and she’s playing them: “That’s the Way Love Goes,” “Together Again,” “All for You” and more. Brush up on your Janetology with 2022’s Janet Jackson, a documentary series about her life and musical career. Opening for Jackson is singer and rapper Nelly, who, with more than 21 million albums sold in the nation and six Top 10 albums, is sure to make the stage hot. (Y’know, as in his 2003 Grammy-winning hit “Hot in Here.”) Come bring some swing to the Kia Center. 7 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $45$495. — SL

Zach Bryan
New-school country star Zach Bryan is currently on his “Quittin’ Time” tour — a mammoth 10-month arena and stadium trek — and the title of this jaunt has some online fans in a bit of a tizzy thinking the name might be a little too on the nose … as in “farewell tour.” Who’s to say? Currently, not Bryan. Regardless of Bryan’s intentions regarding the wide open road, his creative momentum seems to only be gearing up. He released his latest album, The Great American Bar Scene, a few days ago, and it’s a doozy: 19 tracks’ worth of weepers and crowd-pleasers, including duets with Bruce Springsteen and John Moreland. The still-young Bryan isn’t cut from the same cloth as your Morgan Wallen or Luke Combs. He’s got a (real) maverick streak to him — just as apt to call out transphobia as he is to invite the “Hawk Tuah” girl onstage for a duet. Catch him while you can. 6 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $111-$390. — MM
WEDNESDAY–TUESDAY,
TUESDAY, JULY 23
Partynextdoor
Partynextdoor is touring for the first time since 2018, and he’s not forgetting about Orlando’s R&B fans. The Canadian singer/songwriter/ producer will make the 18th stop of his “Sorry I’m Outside” tour at the House of Blues. The tour follows the April release of his newest album PARTYNEXTDOOR 4 (P4). Much of Partynextdoor’s impact on the R&B scene has
taken place behind the scenes — including songwriting credits on Rihanna’s “Work” and DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts.” But his own work has also earned him recognition, dating back to his self-titled 2013 debut album, which included the hit “Recognize” featuring Drake. However, the only features during his Orlando show will be audience members’ screams as he takes the stage solo. 7 p.m., House of Blues, Disney Springs, houseofblues.com, $54.50-$84.50. — ZT

DRAWN BY KIERAN CASTAÑO
[ free will astrology ]
BY ROB BREZSNY
CANCER (June 21-July 22): In 1986, Cancerian singer-songwriter George Michael released his song “A Di erent Corner.” It was a big hit. Never before in British pop music had an artist done what Michael accomplished: wrote, sang, arranged and produced the tune, and played all the instruments. I foresee the possibility of a similar proficiency in your near future, Cancerian — if you want it. Maybe you would prefer to collaborate with others in your big projects, but if you choose, you could perform minor miracles all by yourself.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In the Biblical allegory of Noah and the Ark, God warns Noah about an impending flood and commands him to build a giant lifeboat to save living things from extinction. Noah obeys. When the heavy rains come, he, his family and many creatures board the boat to weather the storm. After 40 days and nights of inundation, they are all safe but stranded in a newly created sea. Hoping for a sign of where they might seek sanctuary, Noah sends out a dove to reconnoiter for dry land. But it returns with no clues. A week later, Noah dispatches a second dove. It returns with an olive leaf, showing that the earth is drying out and land is nearby. Dear Leo, your adventure isn’t as dire and dramatic as Noah’s, but I’m happy to tell you it’s time for you to do the equivalent of sending two doves out to explore.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): According to an ancient Chinese proverb, “An ant on the move does more than a dozing ox.” I will add a corollary: An ant may be able to accomplish feats an ox can’t. For instance, I have observed an ant carrying a potato chip back to its nest, and I doubt that an ox could tote a potato chip without mangling it. Anyway, Virgo, this is my way of telling you that if you must choose between your inspiration being an ant or an ox in the coming days, choose the ant. Be meticulous, persistent and industrious rather than big, strong and rugged.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “If it sounds too good to be true, it always is,” said stage magician Ricky Jay. I only partially agree with him. While I think it’s usually wise to use his formula as a fundamental principle, I suspect it won’t entirely apply to you in the coming weeks. At least one thing and possibly as many as three may sound too good to be true — but will in fact be true. So if you’re tempted to be hyperskeptical, tamp down that attitude a bit. Open yourself to the possibilities of amazing grace and minor miracles.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): What is the largest thing ever sold in human history? It was a 530-million-acre chunk of land in North America. In 1803, the French government sold
it to the American government for $15 million. It stretched from what’s now Louisiana to Montana. Here’s the twist to the story: The land peddled by France and acquired by the U.S. actually belonged to the Indigenous people who had lived there for many generations. The two nations pretended they had the right to make the transaction. I bring this to your attention, Scorpio, because the coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to make a big, important purchase or sale — as long as you have the authentic rights to do so. Make sure there are no hidden agendas or strings attached. Be thorough in your vetting.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): An antiques dealer named Laura Young bought a marble bust of a distinguished man at a thrift store in Austin, Texas. Later she discovered that it was over 2,000 years old and worth far more than the $35 she had paid for it. It depicted a Roman military leader named Drusus the Elder. I foresee similar themes unfolding in your life, Sagittarius. Possible variations: No. 1, you come into possession of something that’s more valuable than it initially appears. No. 2: You connect with an influence that’s weightier than it initially appears. No. 3: A lucky accident unfolds, bringing unexpected goodies. No. 4: A seemingly ordinary thing turns out to be an interesting thing in disguise.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): My childhood friend Jeanine used to say, “The best proof of friendship is when someone gives you half their candy bar. The best proof of fantastic friendship is when they give you even more than half.” And then she would hand me more than half of her Snickers bar, Milky Way or Butterfinger. In accordance with astrological omens, I invite you to give away at least half your candy to those you care for in the coming days. It’s a phase of your astrological cycle when you will benefit from o ering extra special a ection and rewards to the allies who provide you with so much love and support.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): If you’re a teacher, it’s a favorable time to enjoy a stint as a student — and vice versa. If you’re a healthcare worker trained in Western medicine, it’s an excellent phase to explore alternative healing practices. If you’re a scientist, I suggest you read some holy and outrageous poetry, and if you’re a sensitive, introverted mystic, get better informed about messy political issues. In other words, dear Aquarius, open a channel to parts of reality you normally ignore or neglect. Fill in the gaps in your education. Seek out surprise and awakening.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Jane Brunette, a writer I admire, uses the made-up work “plurk” to
refer to her favorite activity: a blend of play and work. I have always aspired to make that my core approach, too. I play at my work and work at my play. As much as possible, I have fun while I’m doing the labor-intensive tasks that earn me a living and fulfill my creative urges. And I invoke a disciplined, diligent attitude as I pursue the tasks and projects that bring me pleasure and amusement. I highly recommend you expand and refine your own ability as a plurker in the coming weeks, Pisces. (Jane Brunette is here: flamingseed.com)
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Have you ever been given a Starbucks gift card but then neglected to use it? Many people fail to cash in such freebies. Believe it or not, there are also folks who buy lottery tickets that turn out to have the winning number — but they never actually claim their rewards. Don’t be like them in the coming weeks, Aries. Be aggressive about cashing in on the o ers you receive, even subtle and shy o ers. Don’t let invitations and opportunities go to waste. Be alert for good luck, and seize it.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The coming weeks will be a favorable time to enhance your relationship with food. In every way you can imagine, be smart and discerning as you plan and eat your meals. Here are ideas to ponder. No. 1: Do you know exactly which foods are best for your unique body? No. 2: Are you su ciently relaxed and emotionally present when you eat? No. 3: Could you upgrade your willpower to ensure you joyfully gravitate toward what’s healthiest? No. 4: Do you have any bad habits you could outgrow? No. 5: Is your approach to eating a ected by problematic emotions that you could heal? No. 6: Are you willing to try improving things incrementally without insisting on being perfect?
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Hybridization could be a fun theme for you in the coming weeks. You’re likely to align yourself with cosmic rhythms if you explore the joys and challenges of creating amalgamations, medleys and mash-ups. Your spirit creatures will be the liger, which is a cross between a lion and a tiger, and a mule, a cross between a horse and a donkey. But please note that your spirit creatures will not be impossible hybrids like a giroose (a cross between a gira e and a moose) or a coyadger (a cross between a coyote and a badger). It’s good to be experimental and audacious in your mixing and matching, but not lunatic delusional.
Cesar (A5480467) is a 1-year-old male Shepherd mix, very sweet, and good with other dogs. He is already house-broken. Cesar loves to snuggle and is quiet and calm. He will benefit from a quiet home, as he’s more on the napping on the couch type than the trail running type.
Cesar has been at the shelter now for over 50 days. He was an owner surrender. Let’s get him home to his forever family.
Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-8363111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
