Honoring Lue Gim Gong and other notable Floridians during AAPI Heritage Month

In May, we honor Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, an annual celebration highlighting the vibrant cultures, remarkable achievements, and enduring contributions of the AAPI community to American society. Originally a week-long observance in 1977, it was expanded to the entire month of May in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush to fully recognize the achievements and legacy of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

The Federal Asian-Pacific American Council announced the 2024 National Asian American, Native Hawai’ian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Theme is “Advancing Leaders Through Collaboration,” a continuation of the 2021-2024 “Advancing Leaders” series. This theme aims to empower community leaders and foster innovation for a brighter future across all ethnicities. In Florida, we remember figures such as Lue Gim Gong, a Chinese-American horticulturist whose innovative techniques revolutionized agriculture, notably

his development of the frost-resistant orange. This innovative discovery had an everlasting impact on Florida’s citrus industry as well as generations of farmers.

With the notable surge in Asian hate crimes, the Florida Commission on Human Relations (FCHR) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to equality. Every American, regardless of race, deserves to be treated with fairness and respect.

As Executive Director of the FCHR, I encourage Floridians who experienced discrimination in the workplace, public accommodations, or housing to contact our agency. Our mission is to eliminate discrimination statewide, and reaching out to us is the initial stride toward achieving that objective.

The FCHR can be contacted at 850-4887082 or by visiting the website at fchr. state.fl.us.

— Cheyanne Costilla, Executive Director, Florida Commission on Human Relations

CATASTROPHE

Orlando Police officers pepper-spray pro-Palestine protesters at Lake Eola

An estimated 1,200 people from across the state, including children and families, gathered for what began as a peaceful rally in Orlando Saturday afternoon to uplift the call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

The demonstration, staged at Lake Eola Park downtown, also commemorated the 76th anniversary of Nakba, a term that translates to “catastrophe” in Arabic. Nakba marks the violent displacement and dispossession of Palestinians and the formation of the State of Israel during the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. It is generally commemorated on May 15.

While the Orlando rally began peacefully shortly after 3:30 p.m., the gathering later on devolved into a chaotic scene as Orlando Police Department officers stormed the crowd about two hours later, deploying pepper spray, pushing and shoving protesters, and arresting two.

Dave Decker, a photographer taking photos on behalf of Orlando Weekly, said this escalation began with the use of a bullhorn by one of the protest attendees. Protesters hadn’t been granted a permit to use sound amplification

devices at the event, and were thus warned against the use of such devices prior to the start of the rally.

Sabrina Miller, a 22-year-old Orlando resident and student gassed by police at the demonstration, said she didn’t learn about why police first rushed at the crowd until later.

She doesn’t remember hearing a verbal warning from officers, who had — as she describes it — essentially “caged in” protesters as they first gathered and then marched around the park. This is a crowd control tactic also known as “kettling.”

“They refused to let us march into the streets, so they pinned us basically into Lake Eola Park on all sides,” Miller told Orlando Weekly in a phone call Monday morning.

Organizers of the rally — including the Florida Palestine Network with support from allied groups such as REAL, Dream Defenders and Jewish Voices for Peace South Florida — had directed protesters at the start of the event not to engage with police, said Miller. The crowd included a number of elderly people and children, she added.

(formerly known as Twitter). “Incredibly disappointed,” she added.

The Orlando Police Department released a statement to the media that evening, sharing that police had “deployed a handheld chemical agent at a group that became disruptive” at the demonstration.

According to the statement, OPD arrested two people who will be charged with battery on a law enforcement officer — a third-degree felony charge that can result in up to five years in prison, if convicted. The police statement reported “no injuries” from the clash.

“The Orlando Police Department is committed to keeping everyone safe who chooses to peacefully assemble in the City of Orlando, while also maintaining the safety of residents and businesses,” the statement reads. There is no mention in the statement of why OPD charged on the crowd to begin with.

Miller told us many people in the crowd were blinded by the chemical spray, and struggling to just see or hear. One person who was arrested, she believes, had “kind of smacked an officer on the helmet with a paper sign” after police had “started beating us.”

After the use of the bullhorn, she remembers about a dozen cops rushing the crowd in her direction, nearly pushing a young man next to her — who was later arrested — to the ground. At first, she and the young man locked arms with others around them, to remain upright.

Officers “maced” them, she said, and came at him again, tackling him to the ground — bringing Miller with him.

“I know the boy next to me did not put any hands on the police because both his arms were locked with friends’ beside [him],” she recalls. Miller hit her own head on the way down.

A nearby friend pulled her out of the cloud of gas.

What also sticks with Miller is what she heard around her, especially from the younger attendees there with their families, as the escalation occurred.

“I could hear children screaming behind me,” she recalls. About half of the rally attendees, she estimates, were families and children of those gathered in support of an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

“I’ve been to several [pro-Palestine protests] where there’s been absolutely no police engagement,” said Miller, who was born and raised in Orlando. “I find it very ironic that this was when they chose to use the most brutal force.”

State Rep. Anna Eskamani — the only state legislator to support a ceasefire resolution introduced by Democratic colleague Angie Nixon earlier this year — later described OPD’s use of force at the rally as “totally uncalled for.”

“Folks are peacefully protesting in a public park and this reaction from law enforcement was totally uncalled for and unnecessarily escalates the situation,” Eskamani wrote on X

The young man standing next to her at the time it all went down — also later arrested — was carried away by police “by all four limbs,” bleeding from the mouth, she said.

According to an Instagram post published by the Florida Palestine Network on Sunday, both individuals arrested by OPD have been released on bail.

Saturday’s demonstration was one of just a number of pro-Palestinian protests — and two University of Central Florida student encampments — organized in Orlando and globally since Oct. 7, 2023, when the Palestinian militant group Hamas led an attack in southern Israel, killing roughly 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians.

Israel’s military response to the attack, supported by billions of U.S. tax dollars, has been brutal. Palestinians living in Israel-occupied Gaza continue to grapple with displacement, famine, a collapsed healthcare system due to Israeli attacks, and brutal force by Israeli forces. The Palestinian death toll from Israel’s military operation has now surpassed 35,000, a figure that reportedly includes more than 14,000 children.

Saturday’s demonstration in Orlando was organized as a statewide demonstration, calling for allies from across the state to attend in support of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and to mark Nakba.

The same day, a group of protesters organized with Central Florida Queers for Palestine rallied near Disney World, managing to block off an exit ramp from Interstate 4 in Orlando before being arrested.

Some students at the University of Central Florida — joining students at dozens of colleges and universities nationwide — have called on their school’s administration to cut financial ties with companies that support Israel’s military operation in addition to other demands.

Navigating a new normal

With funds from opioid lawsuit settlements, Orange County invests in programs to treat addiction and prevent overdose

Opioid addiction and overdose has for years devastated individuals, families and communities in Orange County. But with progressive actions taken by county leaders and community partners armed with new resources, more help appears to be on the way.

As money from national settlements in opioid lawsuits come in, the county is investing those funds into treatment programs, as well as prevention and recovery services. The goal is to reach anyone who needs help, or is at risk for overdose, but with a focus on those who may otherwise struggle to access care otherwise, due to barriers like cost or lack of reliable transportation.

Over the last month, Orange County has made three new investments on the treatment and recovery side — all funded entirely by opioid settlement funds, paid out by drug manufacturers and pharmacies sued over their role in the U.S. opioid epidemic.

Since April, the Orange County board of commissioners has agreed to dedicate $365,800 for a care coordination program in select Orlando Health hospitals; $702,968 for a cost-free residential treatment program for low-income pregnant women or new moms with opioid use disorder; and $506,200 for a medication-assisted treatment program staffed by a full care team near downtown Orlando.

The first program, run by Orlando Health, designates clinicians or social workers to essentially touch base with patients in hospital emergency departments and inpatient wards who have overdosed, or who have symptoms of opioid use disorder. Filling these roles are professionals with knowledge of substance misuse, dubbed “opioid navigators.”

From there, a navigator will talk with the patient, learn more about their needs, and offer to help connect them with resources in the community. Orlando Health also offers medication-assisted treatment for patients who need it.

Medication-assisted treatment, generally consisting of FDA-approved medication coupled with counseling, is the most effective treatment for opioid use disorder. It can also cut the risk of overdose for those who relapse by half or more.

Jaime Bridges, a former Orlando police officer of 13 years and licensed clinical social worker who coordinates the program, admitted not everyone navigators talk to is ready to seek help.

“If you’ve ever seen somebody overdose, or what the aftermath of an overdose is, a lot of times

they’re not ready,” Bridges told Orlando Weekly. “They’re overwhelmed.”

Naloxone, the medicine that can treat an opioid overdose and prevent death, can sometimes throw a person who has become dependent on opioids into withdrawal. This can cause uncomfortable symptoms like nausea and vomiting, anxiety, fever and tremors — temporary, but physically unpleasant nonetheless.

If someone does refuse help, Bridges said what navigators will do is provide them with naloxone (also known as Narcan) and a phone number that they can contact when and if they do feel ready. Bridges said this happens more than you’d think. A lot of times, she explained, people will reach out to her months after they showed up in a local emergency department for overdose. And when they do, they’ve already established that rapport, and she can connect them with the resources they need to begin the road to recovery.

Sometimes, Bridges will answer calls on weekends, just because she knows that when a person is ready, they need someone to pick up the phone. By the next business day, that person might have already changed their mind.

Bridges, who’s in recovery from opioid use disorder, has been there. As an Orlando police officer, Bridges was injured on the job and was prescribed pain medication — specifically, opioids. She became dependent on them, and eventually her drug use became enough of a problem that she had to leave the job.

“I didn’t really have anybody to talk to, because I didn’t really trust anybody,” Bridges admitted. She’d already completed her master’s degree as a police officer, so when she left, she worked on her recovery and got licensed to become a social worker.

Her lived experience with addiction, a disorder still seen by many as a sign of weakness, “means a lot” to the patients she helps today at Orlando Health hospitals. Especially when she shares that she became addicted to pain pills as a police officer. “It shows you that it doesn’t matter who you are, this disease doesn’t care,” said Bridges, who’s now been in recovery for over a decade. “Doesn’t care [about] your color, it doesn’t care who you are, who you work for, what education you have — it can get anybody.”

On the inpatient side of Orlando Health hospitals, Bridges said navigators have more time to counsel and talk with patients, including those admitted for a related medical issue such as

endocarditis — an infection of the heart’s inner lining that can develop in people who inject drugs.

The Orlando Health program was first launched in 2019 at the Orlando Regional Medical Center, thanks to grant money from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Today, Orlando Health has opioid addiction navigators at three hospital locations — ORMC, Winnie Palmer, and Arnold Palmer downtown. A team of healthcare professionals also unofficially provides similar opioid treatment services at Orlando Health Dr. Phillips — unofficially only because they don’t have a designated navigator there, just that team of providers taking on extra duties. Finding the funding and staffing for an expansion has been a challenge, said Bridges, who’s tried negotiating with the hospital administration herself. With these new funds from the county, however, the goal is to overcome those barriers, so patients at the Dr. Phillips location — and hopefully Orlando Health’s Health Central location in Ocoee, too — can have the same access to support and care coordination.

“Every patient deserves the same opportunity as the next patient,” said Bridges. If a patient doesn’t have insurance, or can’t afford treatment, she said the funds they receive help ensure that no one is turned away.

Helping those most in need

Chief executive officer Cheryl Bello heads a nonprofit called Specialized Treatment, Education and Prevention Services (STEPS), which also received opioid settlement funds from Orange County to fund one of their existing residential programs in Apopka and a new program they intend to launch in Parramore.

The residential program prioritizes helping pregnant women with opioid addiction who are uninsured or not eligible for Medicaid. It’s an intensive six-month program, according to Bello, that offers individual and group counseling, medication-assisted treatment, and job assistance.

At the end of a patient’s stay, Bello said patients are expected to have a job waiting for them by the time they leave. When asked if or how they help patients who face barriers to gainful employment — like a criminal record — Bello said simply, “We teach our patients to advocate for themselves.”

Funds recently approved by the county will fund 10 beds for new or soon-to-be moms in the residential program, at no cost to the patient. The funds will also cover up to 12 months of evidence-based treatment and recovery services postpartum, including medication-assisted treatment. Once women leave the live-in treatment setting, Bello said that a lack of transportation and childcare are some of the most common barriers women face in continuing their treatment. They don’t have a car, or they can’t find someone to watch their kids.

To help patients avoid those pitfalls, her nonprofit steps up to coordinate with local childcare providers, and will give patients a ride or bus pass, not only to a treatment session — but also to baby wellness check-ups, or a job interview.

A person’s needs for help vary from person to person. “We look to remove the barriers that we perceive for those individual needs,” Bello explained.

Orange County leaders also approved another contract with her nonprofit fund a new treatment program at the Orange County Medical Clinic close to downtown. This program, at 101 S. Westmoreland Drive, will prioritize people with addiction who were recently released from jail, are pregnant, or who have repeatedly ended up in hospitals or emergency rooms for drug overdose.

The aim is to help reach people who have a higher risk of dying from overdose, including formerly incarcerated people with addiction who don’t have the same tolerance for drugs that they did before they entered jail or prison.

Research has found that incarcerated people are at least 40 to 129 times as likely to die from a drug overdose just in the first two weeks of their release, compared to the general public.

That’s why Orange County leaders decided to establish a medication-assisted treatment program in Orange County Jail in 2022 — the first of its kind in Florida. “Orange County is really very progressive in terms of health services that are being offered in the jail,” Dr. Thomas Hall, director of Orange County’s Office for a Drug-Free Community, told Orlando Weekly earlier this year. The new clinic program downtown, offering medication-assisted treatment, will be accessible to any county resident with opioid use disorder, Bello confirmed. They aim to make it open both to referred patients and walk-ins, with an expectation of treating roughly 250 patients per year.

An effort

to outspend the harm

Altogether, more than $50 billion is expected to be paid out to state and local officials across the U.S. from the opioid settlements, with a portion of that going to state and local governments in Florida. It’s not a lump sum, and funds will be paid out over several years.

Orange County has recently invested its opioid settlement funds in other initiatives, too — such as the distribution of tools to help test street drugs for fentanyl — in an effort to curb the problem. There is reason to be hopeful. In 2022, Orange County saw its first small drop in fatal overdose deaths for the first time in years — from 532 in 2021 to 471 in 2022. And while the number remained relatively stable in 2023, dropping a little, local experts are hopeful that these new programs — and more to come — will help.

“We’re never going to outspend those who are bringing this kind of harm to our community,” said Dr. Hall during a quarterly meeting of the Opioid Advisory Board earlier this year.“The best we can do is to be as judicious with the funds that we have, demonstrate outcomes, and through those demonstrated outcomes, seek additional funds to expand those programs.”

If you need help for a drug or alcohol issue, call 211 or the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration hotline at 800-662-4357 to find treatment and resources near you. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

HOT SOUNDS OF THE CITY

Our picks for the wildest shows this summer plus plenty of concert listings

It’s not summer yet but it might as well be! Our calendars are already exploding with unmissable concerts from now through September — and more are seemingly added daily. Big, small, ear-bleeding, crowd-pleasing, quirky or hip-to-be-square, there’s at least one show a week for folks of all tastes. You have no excuse not to make the scene this summer. On the following pages, you’ll find some of our personal picks of can’t-miss gigs — and they’re just as all-over-the-map as you’d expect — plus a wealth of concert listings for you to consult all summer long.

Stay hydrated!

Monday, June 3

Rolling Stones

Are you setting yourself up for disappointment à la latter-day Bob Dylan by snapping up tickets for this stadium concert? Nope. These gents put on a show with a capital “S” and though they have a new album out — Hackney Diamonds — expect hits delivered with gusto. Plus, being near Keith Richards may or may not have a Fountain of Youth-style effect on concertgoers. (8 p.m., Camping World Stadium,

1 Citrus Bowl Place, campingworldstadium.com, $97-$495)

Friday, June 21

Miya Folick

Miya Folick will be the opener here, but this alt-pop phenom has long been a leading lady in the making. In her 2018 Orlando debut, she showed the stuff of icons. Although her profile’s since risen, it’s not commensurate with her budding greatness. Regardless, even opening for The Japanese House at the Beacham, Folick will be able to show why she’s one of today’s brightest. (7 p.m., The Beacham, 46 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $32.50-$50.)

Saturday, June 29

Mother Mother

Vancouver indie-rock band Mother Mother plan a summer tour of their ninth album, Grief Chapter, a dynamic record about grief and growth. Along for the trek will be the introspective, sincere, soft-spoken Cavetown — Cambridge-based musician Robin Skinner

— and Destroy Boys, a lively punk quartet that deliver captivating lyrics and confrontational tunes. (6:30 p.m., Orlando Amphitheater, 4603 W. Colonial Drive, orlandoamphitheater.com. $44-$160)

Tuesday, July 30

Missy

Elliott

We’re still shocked that the “Out of This World” tour is Missy Elliott’s first headlining expedition. With a legion of futuristic R&B hits like “Work It” and a commitment to flashy performance aesthetics, we can’t imagine the demand hasn’t been there since the iconic crickets on “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” hit the radio. Elliott will be flanked by creative family Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland. (6 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $55-$325)

Friday, Aug. 30

Pylon Reenactment Society

To us, iconic post-punk band Pylon are like the South’s version of New Order or Wire — so unbelievably ahead of their time that we’re honored to exist in the same geographic quadrant.

Though they never made it as big as peers REM and the B-52s, their influence is huge, built on angular, manic gems like Gyrate. PRS, led by OG frontwoman Vanessa Briscoe Hay, is as close as we’ll get to Pylon v.1, but they rip through the classic songs with unbelievable vigor. (8 p.m., Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave., willspub.org, $20)

Friday, Sept. 20

Weezer, Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr.

Weezer has been putting records on shelves for 30 years now, and the seminal Los Angeles alternative rockers are honoring that milestone with their “Voyage to the Blue Planet” tour, where they’ll play their first record, affectionately dubbed “the Blue Album,” in full each night. Released in 1994, the record launched “Undone (The Sweater Song)” into the world, transforming alternative rock radio forever. The Flaming “Fuck Yeah Orlando” Lips and Dinosaur Jr., both perhaps more heavyweight in terms of musicality if less so in terms of pop domination, join Weezer for the big 3-0 party. (6 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $35.50-$145) music@orlandoweekly.com

HAVE NO FEAR, FRINGE FEST IS HERE

Summer’s hottest theater can be found on local stages for two steamy weeks this month

Orlandoans, it’s time to fully feel the Fringe once again. The 33rd annual Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival has just kicked off and runs through the month with a straight-to-the-point theme: “Get Fringed.”

As the longest-running fringe theater festival in the United States, the festival hosts over 136 different productions, local food and beverage vendors, local art, live music and more centered around Loch Haven venues the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, Orlando Family Stage, Orlando Museum of Art and Loch Haven Park, whose green expanse is transformed into the Fringe Lawn every summer. (Read on about some new venues below.)

Featured shows careen wildly across genres and subgenres, amply evidenced from just a random selection of shows: God Is a Scottish Drag Queen, How The Grinch Killed Christmas: A WHO-dunnit Parody, Danny Feedback to the Future, The Lightbringer and Barbenheimer, to name a mere few.

Fringe is famous for giving creative freedom and opportunities to amplify both participating artists’ voices and performances — this year coming from all over the world, and of course Orlando — through a lottery system.

Like any other year, all of the ticket sales from this year’s Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival will be given back to the artists in full. Those who participate in the festival are encouraged to be their most authentic creative selves during the 14 days of the event.

If it’s your first time Fringing, there are some key components to bear in mind since the festival

is unlike any other local art or theater event. And be sure to keep an eye on Orlando Weekly’s show reviews, posted daily online and collected in next week’s print issue. Visit orlandofringe.org to dig deep into schedules and venue addresses, as well as buy tickets.

Winning the lottery

One of Fringe’s most freewheeling traits is that it is 100 percent unjuried. The festival’s performers are chosen through a lottery, meaning that “a veteran artist has as much of a chance of having their show picked to perform as someone who has never performed in their life,” according to the Fringe staff. So, each one of the 136 acts was drawn from the lottery that took place late last year. Who doesn’t love a good roll of the dice?

Tickets to shows

There are over 1,000 ticketed shows waiting for you at this year’s festival. The good news is Orlando Fringe Festival tries to make most shows as affordable as possible with a price range of free-$15. The even better news is that 100 percent of the ticket sales go back to the artists that are performing!

Getting into the festival

A Fringe Button is your key to unlocking the gates of the Orlando Fringe Festival and a collectible symbol of your support for the festival. One Fringe Button is $10 and will get you into the festival but will not grant you access to the performances — you must buy individual tickets to each show you’d like to see. (Note: This is a key point; we made this rookie mistake once and it almost

cost us getting into the show!) Since all of the ticket sales go to the performers, the button funds the operation of the festival — which includes the dedicated staffers who run the lottery, schedule the festival, and do absolutely everything else besides the actual performing (and sometimes that too!).

New venues

While a lot of the action will be centered around Loch Haven Park — Lowndes Shakespeare Center, Orlando Family Stage, Orlando Museum of Art, the Fringe Lawn etc. — the “Bring Your Own Venue” roster stretches over a wider swath of the city. That means the Renaissance Theatre Co., Savoy, CityArts, The Dust (near Lake Eola Park) and of course the festival’s new Fringe ArtSpace on Church Street will also be getting fringed. One definite advantage of this new Fringe sprawl is that it will ease up some of the parking snafus in the Loch Haven area. (Which reminds us! Consider carpooling, ride-sharing, biking or availing yourself of the Fest’s shuttle service.)

Fringe Fest fuel

In addition to showcasing local artists, the Orlando Fringe Festival hosts a plethora of local food and beverage vendors. You can find your festival fuel at the food stalls on the Fringe Lawn, which offers up a stacked schedule of local music and plenty of spirits.

Kids Fringe

The Orlando Fringe Festival puts precious few limits on performers’ creative expression,

meaning the acts are uncensored and may not be for your kiddos. (If you go to more than, say, three shows, you’re probably going to see full frontal.) Luckily, there is a Kids Fringe that will take place on the weekends of May 18-19 and May 25-26. This kid-friendly mini-fest will be held at the Orlando Garden Club and will feature performances, workshops, interactive art experiences and more.

Now go out there and get fringed! Fringe runs through May 27.

POSSESSED TO SKATE

Skateboarding tips, tricks, advice and encouragement from the Orlando underground

An outdoor pastime that is inextricably linked to long summer afternoons and the fearless bloom of youth is skateboarding. We wanted to write about it, but our firsthand experience with skateboarding begins and ends in early high school, when we hopped on a friend’s board and immediately ate pavement. So we turned to some local underground music luminaries — skateboarding and underground sounds have long had a synergistic bond —and asked for their insights.

Tim Dukes: Experimental musician in Malverde and Cheeto Haze, recently longboarded 200 miles in one go

As a somewhat recent transplant from up north, what’s your take on the skateboard-ability of Orlando?

Average, I guess. I do a bit of street skating, mostly on a local tennis court and in some parking lots. I am a casual, older street skater. I spend a ton of time longboarding on the rail trails. Orlando Urban Trail is nice, but short. Cady Way and Lake Baldwin are great. Cady Way leads to the Cross Seminole Trail that goes out to Sanford. From there, you can take the Seminole Wekiva trail back towards Orlando or go around

Lake Monroe. I skated from Orlando to Titusville on rail trails — it was 83 miles and about 90 percent of the time was on very well-maintained, smooth, car-free paths. Rail trails are the best.

What are your favorite skateparks?

I go to Yucatan Skate Park in Azalea Park because it’s a free city park. It’s very small, but it’s fun and somewhat shaded.

Aside from that, what parts of town are your favorites to skate?

The Colonial Plaza parking lot, behind Plaza Live, has a nice curb that people have maintained for skating. I longboard on the Cady Way trail every week. I usually skate on Cady Way and Cross Seminole trails between 20 to 60 miles each weekend.

Harryson Thevenin: One of the minds behind the SR50 zine, also an enthusiastic skateboarding documentarian

What are your favorite skateparks locally?

My favorite new skatepark is Barnett Park. It’s free, the ground is good, and it’s the closest thing to a new park downtown as we’re gonna get.

Robinson (nicknamed Brick Plaza), because it’s the closest thing to a plaza downtown. The abandoned Ace Cafe is the new hot spot right now.

Where do you go to get replacement parts, etc.?

In this order: Plus Skateshop, Galactic G Skateshop, Catalyst Skateshop, OSP.

Are there any annual events or meet-ups and groups that you’d recommend?

Go Skate Day events are usually good — the next is on June 21. Tampa Am/Tampa Pro. Florideah Swampfest. Skate video premieres … but they don’t happen too often and it can be very IYKYK.

Amanda Little: Frontperson of local punks Vicious Dreams, owner of Chainkiller Jewelry, avid skater

What’s your overall take on the state of skateboard-ability here?

As far as skate parks are concerned, we have a few staples in the city and that number is increasing with initiatives from the city, local skaters and skate shops who want to have great parks and make skating more accessible. I think skating is only going to continue to gain traction! Parks currently can get really crowded, especially on weekends. As far as street skating is concerned, I think that’s much less widely accepted as I’ve been thrown out of almost every street spot by cops, unless I skate later at night.

Are there any annual events or meet-ups/groups that you’d recommend?

There were plans to build a skatepark under I-4 downtown but those plans have since changed. My hometown skatepark is Riverside Skate Park in Oviedo, down the street from UCF. I like the new St. Cloud park because it shows that the city cares and is trying to save the next generation — finally. CFL is good if it’s raining and you want to skate an indoor park. I like Lakeside in Kissimmee because I have a lot of friends there and Kissimmee has heart; the city and the police are so oppressive and these kids really make the most out of having less. The new Bithlo park is good but it’s far east. But overall, I’d say my favorite is Orlando Skate Park [in the Milk District] because it’s in a great location and it’s the most appropriate as far as a meet-up spot, especially if you’re trying to go street skating. You can leave your car there, you can skate for a bit to warm up if a homie is late, it’s a good universal place to meet up.

Aside from that, what parts of town are good places to skate?

It used to be Howard Middle School. Aside from the skateparks, there’s a lot of spots. Downtown has a lot of good spots. UCF has a lot of spots with less kick-out. Lakefront Kissimmee is fun. The Zora Neale Hurston building on

Lady Skate Day in Jacksonville is a rad group that I’ve been itching to get to and skate with. They also recently had the one-year anniversary fest at Barnett Park with food and music. Milk Mart also puts on a skate event that they collab with Galactic G on, that has skate obstacles, music, food and vendors.

What advice would you give someone wanting to take up skateboarding here?

Yes, do it. Just try it. We have such an amazing skate community here and there will never be a lack of folks who want to help, support and skate alongside with you. Skateboarding changed my life. I didn’t start until I was 31 and the only thing I wish I could change is starting sooner.

Does skateboarding feed into your music at all?

Totally! Music and skateboarding, skateboarding and punk and rock & roll have been intertwined since its origination. I love to listen to music while I skate because it makes me skate harder. Listening to cool music and moving my body invigorates me to write music. One of my favorite things is to put together skate clips and videos and try to piece it together with a perfect song. Watching skate videos is a great way to learn about new music too.

COLD COMFORT

Some cool treats to cure your summertime phews

Have you ever run an ice-cold soda can down your neck in the middle of a sultry Sunday afternoon? Or licked an ice cream cone while writhing on the hood of a car in short shorts? Then consider the following roundup of cold treats a print and digital cure for your summertime phews. From frozen treats on a stick to chilled quaffs to icy sculptures of snow and syrup, these cold treats are coming in hot. Take them all in, then take a cold shower.

Koko Kakigori

If ever “the good things come to those who wait” adage rings true, it’s at this little shop of frozen treats behind Kaya where lines are an absolute given, and justifiably so. They come for the frozen, airy confection known as kakigori — a Japanese summertime treat of shaved ice that takes on the texture of freshly fallen snow, a mouthfeel those of us who grew up in northern climes are quite familiar with.“It’s sooo fluffy!” is a common refrain heard at the standing tables beneath the bodhi tree where scores have enjoyed Koko Kakigori’s kakigorgeous snow sculptures. I can honestly say the pillowy

snowball dubbed the “Strawberry Dream” ($18) is one that’s frozen in my memory ever since indulging in the soft ice drizzled in condensed milk, homemade mascarpone cream and strawberry puree. It’s then sprinkled with peanut butter shortbread cookies and fresh strawberries and wowza, what a treat. The “Yuzu Orange” ($10) comes with a straw to sip up the sweet melt — it’s a proper brain wash, but without the brain freeze. Check the calendar on their website to see whether they’re open; it’s usually a Friday-through-Sunday operation, but sometimes they take a weekend off. (620 N. Thornton Ave., kokokakigori.com)

Sampaguita Ice Cream

“The Ube Latte and Buko Pandan,” says the pleasant girl behind the counter at Sampaguita Ice Cream when I ask what her go-to flavors are when the weather turns from bearable to downright brutal. No question — the swirl of sweet purple yam and French roast of the former, as well as the vanilla-coconut bomb of the latter, can dulcify in more ways than one. But I’d argue that the halo halo ($10), most traditional of

Blue” ($6.25) with its blobs of blue coconut jelly, whipped cream and garnish of teeny-weeny macarons. I even added some brown sugar jelly ($1), ’cuz why not? The coconut, however, had a burnt sort of taste I didn’t care for. I also wanted to try the dragon fruit tea ($7.50) with sweet jelly “crystal pearls” and milk foam, but they ran out of dragon fruit tea. So, I got the lychee green tea ($6.25) with the same ingredients instead. It was a bit too sweet for my liking, even at 70 percent sweetness. (Yes, you can control the sugar and ice levels of your drinks here too.) With more than 100 beverage options on the menu, though, I’m sure I’ll find liquid salvation in this Promised Land of tea soon enough. (5892 Red Bug Lake Road, Winter Springs, tsaocaaflorida.com)

Crispý Cones

What does a Shark Tank-approved dessert look like? It looks like a chimney cake filled with soft-serve ice cream sprinkled with toppings and drizzled with syrup, that’s what, and Crispý Cones has the goods. The doughy treats are based on European spit cakes — Czech trdelníks and Hungarian kürtőskalács. And that’s “spit” as in the dough is rotisserie-grilled on a tabletop spit, though it certainly made the lady on the TV show drool. The dough is then covered with cinnamon and sugar and its hollow interior anointed with a spread (Nutella, cookie butter or peanut butter). I had my crispy cone ($8.19) spread with the latter, filled with a vanilla-chocolate swirl, topped with strawberries and walnuts and drizzled with caramel. Only the crispy cone wasn’t as crispy as I thought it would be — the dough was just, well, doughy. It was placed into a small cup, which made for a wobbly lick. The strawberries weren’t fresh but, rather, half-frozen, and the whole thing turned into a goopy mess. Not my idea of a fun frozen fad, but with six locations around the country and counting, it seems others would disagree. (2415 Curry Ford Road, thecrispycones.com)

Morelia Gourmet Paletas

frozen Filipino treats, out-cools and out-refreshes anything else served on the menu. Shaved ice is the chilling agent, but a textural whirlwind of ingredients ranging from cornflakes and toasted rice to squishy layers of scratch-made coconut-pandan jellies, jackfruit, palm nut fruit and coconut strings give the swirl of ube and vanilla ice cream an unmatched flavor vibrancy. Condensed milk, ube jam, flan and ube sauce lend the colorful cooler its characteristic sweetness and cold comfort. (1233 E. Colonial Drive, sampaguitausa.com)

Tsaocaa

The burgeoning Chinese chain has a mind-boggling array of teas from which to choose, so it’s no surprise its name, Tsaocaa, translates to “The Holy Land of Tea” and gives cause for many to make a pilgrimage out to Winter Springs. Patrons spend a fair bit of time staring into the cutesy store’s ordering kiosks, given the astounding number of choices and options. But quantity doesn’t always equate to quality. In fact, most of the beverages here are crafted from pre-made mixes. I tried the very Instagram-able “Coconut

Deep within the retail caverns of the Florida Mall sits a popsicle shop worth seeking out during the summer swelter. They offer paletas, Mexico’s answer to Fudge Pops and Creamsicles, and the frozen treats truly pack a punch. The mango sorbet bathed in puckery chamoy sauce and rolled in sweet-and-spicy Miguelito chamoy sugar ($8.19) is a dessert-on-a-stick of the highest order. There are also a couple of options — pineapple-mint sorbet and passion fruit sorbet — with no sugar added, and, best of all, there’s actual fruit inside these fruit pops. But there are rich and creamy options too — strawberry cheesecake, Belgian chocolate, Oreo cookies and cream, to name a few, as well as assorted dips and toppings to make them all the richer. “What’s your favorite paleta?” I ask the gentleman behind the counter. “Sicilian pistachio dipped in white chocolate and rolled in more pistachio,” he advised and paying $8.19 for a popsicle still seemed like a pretty good deal, given all the pistachios rolled onto this paleta. I enjoyed every creamy, crunchy bite — consider this one the king of pop. (8001 S. Orange Blossom Trail, paletasmorelia.com)

GRIFFIN RISING

Comedian Kathy Griffin returns to Orlando like a phoenix

Kathy Griffin started doing stand-up comedy around 1990, and it wasn’t long before the road brought her to Orlando for the first time. “It was at the old Hard Rock Cafe,” she says via Zoom from Canada. “I remember doing the show in what was the club and, look, I’m fortunate enough to play theaters now, but I’m not gonna lie, those club dates were rough!” (She’s talking about the original Hard Rock Live, which closed in 1998 and was demolished in 2011 to make way for the current version, where she has also performed.)

Griffin’s current tour is called “My Life on the PTSD-List,” and she’s bringing it to the Plaza Live this time around. “Believe it or not, a nice theater can make a real difference, because the audience shows up in a different way in a theatrical setting

than for a club,” says Griffin, who played there on her last tour. “I’m really more of a storyteller.

I don’t do one-liners, and I don’t do crowd work, which I know is really trendy now.”

Suffice to say that her relationship with our community goes back to the 1990s, and it continues now into a new decade. When Griffin plays the Plaza Live, it will be her first Florida gig in seven years, owing to the exigencies of the pandemic and, well, other stuff. Lots of other stuff.

Since she last played here, Griffin has been married and divorced. She survived the pandemic, while losing her mom and her sister. She was then diagnosed with lung cancer, even though she was never a smoker. When it rains, it pours.

“So I have half a lung on my left side,” she says, “and a freaking paralyzed left vocal cord, from the

surgery, and now I have to use a special headset microphone. But it’s very rock & roll — it makes me feel like Janet Jackson!” She’s also three years sober now.

Griffin, who turns 60 later this year, has devoted roughly two-thirds of her life to the performing arts. She was born in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, a major force in American comedy for decades as the home of improv powerhouse Second City. Second City produced a big chunk of the early Saturday Night Live cast back when Griffin was still in high school. Her initial passion was acting, specifically musical theater, and she moved to Los Angeles right after graduation.

Generally speaking, America’s formal introduction to Kathy Griffin came 28 years ago, when Suddenly Susan began airing on NBC in

September 1996. The much-hyped sitcom starred Brooke Shields and Judd Nelson in a prized Thursday night time slot, back when “Must See TV” was at its peak. (It was also one of a number of shows set at newspapers, magazines and television shows, a popular trope in that era.) The show drew decent ratings over its four-year run, but today the only thing we remember is Griffin’s star-making turn as Shields’ sidekick Vicki Groener, which earned her a spot in the industry that she has not conceded since.

Griffin’s momentum from the ’90s carried over into the 21st century, and she became a staple of U.S. television, especially on cable, earning household-name status based on two key projects. The first was Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, a reality show that ran on Bravo from 2005-2010, named after a 2004 comedy special that aired on that same channel. The second was her essential role as the comic relief during CNN’s iconic New Year’s Eve broadcasts, which also featured lead anchor Anderson Cooper and Bravo boss Andy Cohen. Griffin’s life was forever altered by a fateful shoot with the controversial photographer Tyler Shields in 2016; the resulting picture (which you may have seen, or heard of) caused massive complications to her career, some of which can never be fixed. This was a case in which Griffin’s unabashed status-seeking backfired on her; she was suckered into a stunt that made her one of the first high-profile victims of what is now understood as a vicious, virulent socio-political subculture There were the same folks who later stormed the U.S. Capitol once, and may very well do so again. Besides the hate mail and death threats, the personal and professional price she paid was, in a word, “yuge.” Most notably, she was fired from the CNN NYE in 2017, which has been a drunken shitshow ever since. By her own account, Kathy Griffin’s mouth cost her her job on Hannah Montana and has gotten her banned from the Tonight Show, the Apollo Theater and The View (at least twice). She also lost the Squatty Potty gig, got briefly banned from Twitter, was put on watchlists by Homeland Security and Interpol (not the band).

The Plaza Live show will be the 34th date of her current tour; she has at least 15 more booked through the rest of the year, with more gigs being added whenever possible. Griffin’s already pushing herself very hard, but for her, there is no other way. Her hyper-confessional style may verge on oversharing, but for her the process is therapeutic, more now than ever before. No matter what happens, Kathy Griffin will never stop, and that’s bad news for everyone trying to keep up with her. arts@oralndoweekly.com

COUCHSURFING

Premieres Wednesday:

Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal — Revisit the devastating blow that was dealt to the adulterers’ dating site when hackers divulged the identities of millions of users. Just think: The next time Netflix fails to protect your own data, you’ll now be able to put everything in perspective. (Netflix)

Premieres Thursday:

Bridgerton Season 3 Part 1 — They used to be just an obsessed gossipmonger and her pined-for crush, but Penelope and Colin make the move to being an actual couple in the first four episodes of Season 3. The second four episodes drop a month from now, at which time we’ll learn how many Scaramuccis this thing actually lasted. (Netflix)

Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos and Baseball — Go back 34 years to a fraught moment in New York Yankees history, when their owner was bounced from baseball and one of their outfielders laid the groundwork for a future rape conviction by taking up with a 15-yearold. Or as the Mets have always referred to it, “Tuesday.” (Peacock)

Home Sweet Rome! — Michael Poryes, creator of Hannah Montana and That’s So Raven, is once again aiming for the heart of American girls with a series about a 13-year-old whose life is turned upside down when her family moves to Italy. But don’t feel too sorry for her, because they warmed her up for it by ordering Domino’s every week for a year. (Max)

Maestro in Blue — The second season of Netflix’ only Greek drama takes us from the obscure isle of Paxos to teeming Athens, to show us how far the story’s web of murder and deceit extends. The final season is coming this fall, at which time we’ll learn if the reverberations have even reached those little diners where they put Greek columns on the coffee cups. (Netflix)

Outer Range Season 2 — Star Josh Brolin directed one of the seven new episodes of this series set at a Wyoming ranch that’s situated on the cusp of a space/time anomaly. The worst thing about being directed by the guy is that he hasn’t kicked the habit of snapping his fingers when he wants someone to bring him a cappuccino. (Prime Video)

sequel. This time, the murderous Inspector Wörmer is after the daughter of the night watchman who interfered with his crazed plans in the original. Hey, I don’t blame him. I hate those nepo babies too. (Shudder)

Power — From the first slave patrols to the gestapo tactics on display at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, follow the long and checkered history of American policing in a documentary that’ll make you think twice about the trust we place in our cops. Well, not you and me personally, but I’m sure there’s somebody. (Netflix)

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars: Untucked — Season 9 may prove the third time’s the charm for Orlando’s own Roxxxy Andrews — if she can fend off the other seven returnees, including Vanessa Vanjie, Plastique Tiara and Marcia Gay Hard-on. OK, I made that last one up, but you had to Google it! (Paramount+)

Premieres Friday:

The 8 Show — Still searching for the next Squid Game, South Korea sends us a dramedy series in which impoverished contestants have to spend 100 days in a building where everything costs 1,000 times what it should. Wow, so they’re living in a Publix? (Netflix)

99 — David Beckham is among the star players interviewed in a three-part docuseries that celebrates the 25th anniversary of Manchester United winning the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, all in the same season. Even better, they saved a bunch of money on their car insurance by switching to Geico. (Prime Video)

Bellator Champions Series Paris — Coming to us live from the City of Light, the latest MMA spectacular is headlined by a bantamweight title bout between Patchy Mix and Magomed Magovedov. Seems to me the last time a patchy mix was a big deal on streaming, it was because Rick Rubin had a show. (Max)

The Big Cigar — Don Cheadle directed the first two episodes of this historically based drama series, which shows Easy Rider producer Bert Schneider (Alessandro Nivola) helping the Black Panthers’ Huey P. Newton (André Holland) flee to Cuba to dodge a murder rap. Yes, the guy The Monkees named their mannequin after was the A.C. Cowlings of his day. (If neither of those references rings a bell, just know that people like you are the reason we can’t have HQ anymore.) (Apple TV+)

Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever — Thirty years later, the Danish cult horror flick finally gets a

Thelma the Unicorn — Voice actors Brittany Howard and Will Forte tell the story of a humble pony who becomes a famous singing unicorn, in a kids’-book adaptation penned by Jared and Jerusha Hess of Napoleon Dynamite fame. You can tell it’s their work, because suddenly Thelma’s manager is a liger. (Netflix)

Premieres Sunday:

Golden Kamuy — In a live-action adaptation of the popular manga, soldiers discover that the map to a hidden treasure is tattooed onto the bodies of a bunch of prison inmates. You gotta love the Japanese alphabet, because it can even make something beautiful out of “Walk three paces east from the hepatitis.” (Netflix)

Premieres Monday:

The Parisian Agency: Exclusive Properties — Strap in for a fourth season of watching the Kretz family sell high-end dwellings in France and beyond. (“Beyond” being defined as “Wherevair ze peegs live.”) (Netflix)

Premieres Tuesday:

LOLLA: The Story of Lollapalooza — Did you know the seminal alternative-music festival grew out of plans for a Jane’s Addiction farewell tour? That’s just one of the fun facts you’ll learn in this retrospective docuseries. (In a rare case of cultural symmetry, Lilith Fair evolved into a farewell tour for all those dogs in the ASPCA commercials.) (Paramount+)

Rachel Feinstein: Big Guy — The comic’s latest stand-up special takes its title from her routine about nicknames you should never give your wife. OK, Rachel: How do you feel about “Boner Garage”? (Netflix)

LOCAL RELEASES

For the past year, Orlando punk brutes Thrull have been gradually steeling their knuckles on stages around town opening for heavy hitters like Crowbar, the HIRS Collective and Primitive Man. Recently, though, they got official with the release of debut EP Hard Mental Reset

Although new, Thrull are a young all-star band with deep experience from some of the smartest pockets in the Orlando heavy underground. The trio — Michael Scotto (guitar/vocals), Julio Felix (drums/vocals) and Justin Fontes (bass/vocals) — have an impressive collective résumé that includes Witchbender, Ad Nauseum, Freakazoid, Burn to Learn and Emporos. But they first came together as bandmates in now-defunct deathgrind group Flying Limbs.

While the members played their current instruments in Flying Limbs, none of them contributed vocals. In this new band, they make up for that threefold. Summoning the notable vocal experience that each of them have, Thrull is a three-headed Hydra capable of high-wire singing, fiery punk shouts and metal growls all in rapid succession.

Nothing about Hard Mental Reset feels overthought. Recorded in a single day at Orlando’s Red Lion Recording Studio, the blunt-force EP hits with raw, thrilling immediacy. It’s a clinic in bare brutality and an exciting introduction to these new contenders.

Hard Mental Reset now streams everywhere. It’s also available on cassette and CD via Bandcamp.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

The Pharcyde, The Kaleidoscope Kid: Few in the 1990s hip-hop canon are as equally legendary and left-field as L.A.’s The Pharcyde. While their South Central contemporaries were measuring their dicks with gangsta rap, these cats just let their balls hang out and kept it funny and weird with funky jams of pure irreverence. Opening will be the modern eclecticism of aptly named Arizona rapper The Kaleidoscope Kid. (7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, The Vanguard, $30-$35)

Hey Ladies! Orlando: As today’s patriarchy flexes to suppress women, America’s female voice just keeps on rising (hopefully into a nationwide primal scream come November). Even beyond politics, there’s been a swelling movement in culture that’s aiming to both give women their due spotlight right now and pave the way for next generations. Hey Ladies! Orlando is the local embodiment of that spirit.

Orlando metal trio

Combining rage and thoughtful dynamics, they’re both savage and intelligent. But Thrull are out to destroy, not get academic

On their five-song debut, Thrull harness the fires of hardcore, metal and noise rock to forge an impressively simian storm. Combining unchained rage and thoughtful dynamics, they’re both savage and intelligent like a gorilla. But Thrull are out to destroy, not get academic.

For all its universal appeal, the DJ world pathetically remains one of the most male-dominated sectors of music. Well, fuck that. Returning for its second year, Hey Ladies! Orlando is a DJ-centered event that showcases current female talent and fosters the next class. Running the tables will be a seasoned, diverse lineup including Dee J. Pawli, Demi Korrin, Lola B., Lyla St. Clair, Say! and Moñi. But the part that makes this a truly caring affair is that the afternoon begins with two hours of open turntables for women wanting to try their hand at spinning under the guidance of an instructor.

Besides the music, it’ll be a mini festival with food and goods from woman-owned businesses. A total community event, Hey Ladies! Orlando is both all-ages and free, though those kind enough to give a $10 donation will receive some merch. Come see and support these sisters doing it for themselves. (2 p.m. Sunday, May 19, Grape & the Grain, free-$10)

X Harlow, Warm Frames, Shania Pain, Off Track: The freaks know what’s up, and it’s lineups like this that really bring ’em out. Brooklyn’s X Harlow, in particular, will get wild in a maelstrom of industrial rap and fried electronics that shares Death Grips’ DNA of sonic terrorism. The locals on the bill don’t get any more tame. The unhinged rock of Warm Frames is an open attack on convention, Shania Pain make outsider dance music that defies all typical club tropes, and Off Track will bring maximum fuzz. See you on the edge. (8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, Stardust Video & Coffee, $10) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

Casanova

The Orlando Ballet’s 2023-2024 season — also their halfcentury season — ends with an, ahem, bang this week with their U.S. premiere of Casanova. Award-winning choreographer Kenneth Tindall’s production based on

the life of infamous lover Giacomo Casanova —originally staged by the London Ballet — comes to our shores due to an innovative partnership between the Orlando Ballet, Colorado Ballet and Milwaukee Ballet. Everything in this ballet is big and opulent: Venetian masquerades, period costumes, bold choreography and guest conductor Julian Pellicano leading the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.

Orlando Ballet Artistic director Jorden Morris, in point of fact, promises a production “sinfully rich with the forbidden.” There’s even a mature content advisory! Beware, dance fans; you will get the vapors. Steinmetz Hall, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., drphillipscenter.org, $29-$160.

Bad Bunny

The wait for reggaeton sensation Bad Bunny’s return to an Orlando stage is finally over. The Puerto Rican galáctico of Latin and pop music is on a 47-date tour that stops at a familiar arena in the City Beautiful — for two nights. Late last year, Bunny (né Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) saw his newest album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va A Pasar Mañana, reach more single-day Spotify streams than any other this year. More recently, the singer debuted a new chart-topping single with Myke Towers called “Adivino” and has been spotted out on the town with one Ms. Kendall Jenner. The 29-year-old three-time Grammy winner last played Orlando during his “World’s Hottest Tour” in August 2022, with one heady show at Camping World Stadium. This time, we get twice that. 7 p.m., Kia Center, 400 W. Church St., kiacenter.com, $151$861. — Chloe Greenberg

Spooky Empire

Local horror convention Spooky Empire knows that Halloweenites and goth-adjacent folks can’t make it to Oct. 31 without a little midyear serotonin boost, so the con is back this weekend. The usual attractions will all be well-represented: vendors (mostly of the horrifying variety), live music, a tattoo festival and cosplay everywhere you turn. The celebrity lineup has some great highlights as well. There are big names like Alice Cooper (!), the stars of the iconic (and Orlandoconnected) first Blair Witch Project, a trio of vampires from Twilight and plenty of good-lookin’ victims from Friday the 13th. Then, on the cult end, there’s some of the

evil children from the 1984 film adaptation of Stephen Kings Children of the Corn and Kevin VanHentenryck from (gasp!) gritty 1982 NYC grindhouse classic Basket Case. Get ready for the frights. Wyndham Orlando Resort, 8001 International Drive, spookyempire.com, $40-$275. — MM

Rev. Horton Heat

Rockabilly trio emeritus Rev. Horton Heat have been regularly leaving it all on Orlando stages going back decades — we vividly remember a chaotic show at the former Sapphire Supper Club in the mid-1990s that was one of the most psycho(billy) shows we ever witnessed. So, the boys are back in town this weekend, this time playing at the Seminole Harley-Davidson dealership, which is pretty perfect because the rockabilly-tomotorcycle synergy is strong. (And they played Ace Cafe a few years back, so another excellent callback.) The trio recently allowed themselves a rare moment of looking back amid their nearly constant forward motion with The Roots of the Rev covers album, which saw them tackling numbers by Ronnie Dawson, Carl Perkins and OG wildman Gene Vincent — here’s hoping more than a few of those numbers snake their way into Saturday’s set. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Hypothetically, you could learn to give a stirring rendering of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 on a slide whistle. Or you could perform the “To be or not to be” soliloquy from Shakespeare’s Hamlet for an audience of pigeons that aren’t even paying attention. Theoretically, you could pour out your adoration to an unattainable celebrity or give a big tip to a waiter who provided mediocre service or do your finest singing at a karaoke bar with two people in the audience. But I hope you will o er your skills and gifts with more discernment and panache, Taurus — especially these days. Don’t o er yourself carelessly. Give your blessings only to people who deeply appreciate them.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): When I lived in San Francisco in 1995, thieves stole my Chevy Malibu. It was during the celebratory mayhem that swept the city following the local football team’s Super Bowl victory. Cops miraculously recovered my car, but it had been irrevocably damaged in one specific way: It could no longer drive in reverse. Since I couldn’t a ord a new vehicle, I kept it for the next two years, carefully avoiding situations when I would need to go backward. It was a perfect metaphor for my life in those days. Now I’m suggesting you consider adopting it for yours. From what I can discern, there will be no turning around anytime soon. Don’t look back. Onward to the future!

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian basketball coach Tara VanDerveer is in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. She won more games than anyone else in the sport. Here’s one aspect of her approach to coaching. She says that the greatest players “have a screw loose” — and she regards that as a very good thing. I take her to mean that the superstars are eccentric, zealous, unruly and daring. They don’t conform to normal theories about how to succeed. They have a wild originality and fanatical drive for excellence. If you might ever be interested in exploring the possible advantages of having a screw loose for the sake of your ambitions, the coming months will be one of the best times ever.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Am I one of your father figures, uncle figures or brother figures? I hope so! I have worked hard to purge the toxic aspects of masculinity that I inherited from my culture. And I have diligently and gleefully cultivated the most beautiful aspects of masculinity. Plus, my feminist principles have been ripening and growing stronger for many years. With that as our background, I encourage you to spend the coming weeks upgrading your own relationship to the masculine archetype, no matter which of

the 77 genders you might be. I see this as an excellent time for you to take practical measures to get the very best male influences in your life.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Now that your mind, your heart and your world have opened wider than you imagined possible, try to anticipate how they might close down if you’re not always as bold and brave as you have been in recent months. Then sign a contract with yourself, promising that you will not permit your mind, your heart or your world to shrink or narrow. If you proactively heal your fears before they break out, maybe they won’t break out. (P.S.: I will acknowledge that there may eventually be a bit of contraction you should allow to fully integrate the changes — but only a bit.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): I would love you to cultivate connections with characters who can give you shimmery secrets and scintillating stories you need to hear. In my astrological opinion, you are in a phase when you require more fascination, amazement and intrigue than usual. If love and sex are included in the exchange, so much the better — but they are not mandatory elements in your assignment. The main thing is this: For the sake of your mental, physical and spiritual health, you must get your limitations dissolved, your understanding of reality enriched and your vision of the future expanded.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Scorpio writer Andrew Solomon made a very Scorpionic comment when he wrote, “We all have our darkness, and the trick is making something exalted of it.” Of all the signs of the zodiac, you have the greatest potential to accomplish this heroic transmutation — and to do it with panache, artistry and even tenderness. I trust you are ready for another few rounds of your mysterious specialty. The people in your life would benefit from it almost as much as you.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Have you been nursing the hope that someday you will retrain your loved ones? That you will change them in ways that make them act more sensibly? That you will convince them to shed qualities you don’t like and keep just the good parts? If so, the coming weeks will be an excellent time to drop this fantasy. In its place, I advise you to go through whatever mental gymnastics are necessary as you come to accept and love them exactly as they are. If you can manage that, there will be a bonus development: You will be more inclined to accept and love yourself exactly as you are.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): I brazenly predict that in the next 11 months, you will get closer

than ever before to doing your dream job. Because of your clear intentions, your diligent pragmatism and the Fates’ grace, life will present you with good opportunities to earn money by doing what you love and providing an excellent service to your fellow creatures. But I’m not necessarily saying everything will unfold with perfection. And I am a bit afraid that you will fail to capitalize on your chances by being too insistent on perfection. Please assuage my doubts, Capricorn! Welcome imperfect but interesting progress.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In his book Ambivalent Zen, Lawrence Shainberg mourns that even while meditating, his mind is always fleeing from the present moment — forever “lurching towards the future or clinging to the past.” I don’t agree that this is a terrible thing. In fact, it’s a consummately human characteristic. Why demonize and deride it? But I can also see the value of spending quality time in the here and now — enjoying each new unpredictable moment without compulsively referencing it to other times and places. I bring this up, Aquarius, because I believe that in the coming weeks, you can enjoy far more free time in the rich and resonant present than is normally possible for you. Make “BE HERE NOW” your gentle, relaxing battle cry.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Two-thirds of us claim to have had a paranormal encounter. One-fourth say they can telepathically sense other people’s emotions. One-fifth have had conversations with the spirits of the dead. As you might guess, the percentage of Pisceans in each category is higher than all the rest of the zodiac signs. And I suspect that number will be even more elevated than usual in the coming weeks. I hope you love spooky fun and uncanny mysteries and semi-miraculous epiphanies! Here they come.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Polish-born author Joseph Conrad (1857–1924) didn’t begin to speak English until he was 21 years old. At 25, his writing in that language was still sti and stilted. Yet during the next 40-plus years, he employed his adopted tongue to write 19 novels, numerous short stories and several other books, and today he is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language. You may not embark on an equally spectacular growth period in the coming months, Aries. But you do have extra power to begin mastering a skill or subject that could ultimately be crucial to your life story. Be inspired by Conrad’s magnificent accomplishments.

Meet Wyatt!

Wyatt (A542744) has been at the shelter now for 70 days, making him our second-longest resident. Our vets put him at about 4 years old, and he weighs a little under 60 pounds. Muscular, healthy, strong, but extremely timid, Wyatt is a complete mystery to us. On some days he’s sweet and affectionate, taking treats gently, enjoying the yards and our company. On other days, he is timid, avoidant, and withdrawn. He’s been paired with other dogs, and for the most part he doesn’t seem to mind them, as long as they respect his space.

Like any other stray dog, Wyatt is careful and cautious with people, but shyly seeks affection. He is intelligent, and at some point in his life, someone taught him a bunch of commands, like “down,” “sit” and “paw,” and Wyatt loves to show them off for treats. But he is going to need someone who will teach him other things, like trust and love. We’ve caught glimpses of this sweet dog with his guard down, and we know there is a good dog in there, longing to come out. He just needs the right person to draw him out. Wyatt’s been here long enough.

Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-836-3111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
