‘A FREE SOCIETY EMBRACES DISSENT’
To the editor:
In the past few weeks, college campuses globally have witnessed a surge of demonstrations led by supporters of Palestine, including both students and faculty. These protests are denouncing Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which have resulted in the loss of over 34,000 lives. Across numerous universities, demonstrators are advocating for their institutions to cut off all forms of financial and academic association with Israel, including divestment from companies connected to the country.
The right to public protest is the heartbeat of a free society. It serves as the indispensable channel for airing grievances, challenging authority, and ensuring voices are heard. Public demonstrations have historically catalyzed change, often confronting brutal suppression. The freedom to dissent and protest is fundamental to societal health, fostering accountability and allowing citizens to influence policy. Peaceful protests are not just legitimate expressions but also crucial defenders of human rights, amplifying marginalized voices and confronting established powers.
However, despite legal protections, many face violent repression for exercising this right. Instead of stifling dissent, it’s imperative for governments to heed the calls of their citizens, particularly regarding issues like genocide and interventionism. Attempts to quell protests threaten the very essence of democracy and impede social progress.
The growing global concern over state repression of peaceful protests necessitates action at all levels to uphold and strengthen the right to dissent. From bans and restrictions to unjust arrests, violations of this right persist. Furthermore, advancements in technology have altered protest dynamics, posing new challenges to rights protection.
Multiple activists and students have been arrested in Florida over the past weeks. “If a Marine Corps Veteran can’t peacefully protest against war and genocide, then who can?” Asked Kyle Mitchell, United States Marine Corps 2014-2018 who also served in California, Afghanistan, New Jersey, and Georgia. On May 4, 2024, during Leadership Blue, the main organizing event for the Florida Democratic Party convention; a Palestinian protester was attested as well.
A free society embraces dissent, understanding its pivotal role in fostering change without resorting to extreme measures. Disruptive protests, while met with criticism, have historically
driven significant social transformations. We call for protest to remain peaceful without ignoring the urgency and effectiveness of disruptive action.
We call on the Florida Democratic Party to intercede in dropping the charges pressed on all protesters involved in the civic duty of generating change.
In essence, the right to protest is non-negotiable in a democratic society. Those who seek to suppress it jeopardize not only the democratic process, but also the lives and liberties of those they claim to protect.

Orlando Police Department releases body-cam video of pepper-spray in the park debacle; new evidence of heat danger for outdoor workers; DeSantis scrubs climate change prevention from Florida policy, and other news you may have missed.
BY CHLOE GREENBERG AND THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
» OPD releases body cam footage from pro-Palestinian rally
Orlando Police Department shared with Orlando Weekly body-worn camera footage from a pro-Palestinian protest at Lake Eola Park on Saturday, May 11, attended by an estimated 1,200 people, including children and families. An aim of the rally was to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas War that began Oct. 7, 2023. While the rally began peacefully shortly after 3:30 p.m., the gathering later devolved into a chaotic scene as Orlando Police Department officers stormed the crowd, deployed pepper spray, pushed and shoved protesters, and arrested two. The escalation began after one protest attendee addressed the crowd with a bullhorn. Protesters hadn’t been granted a permit to use sound amplification devices at the event, one organizer said at the start of the rally, and were thus warned against the use of such devices. In the released body camera footage, an OPD officer is heard saying, “Stay here. It’s just going to be two of us,” to a group of surrounding officers. “Stand by. We’re going to go tell her,” he continues. “We’re going to try and keep this as subtle as possible. If it bucks, you guys bring it in. Bring it in with force.” OPD began entering the crowd and pushing and shoving ensued, followed by the deployment of pepper spray by officers. From one body-cam angle, a young protester can be seen whacking the helmet of an OPD officer with a poster amid the chaos. The protester was later arrested and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer — a charge that can lead to imprisonment and a fine.
» New study says excessive heat increases frequency of worker injuries
After Florida lawmakers this year passed a Big Business-backed bill barring local heat protections for workers, a new study from the Workers Compensation Research Institute cites “strong and robust evidence that excessive heat increases the frequency of injuries” to workers, with risks particularly in the South. The study uses workers’ compensation insurance claims data and temperature data from 2016 to 2021. In part, it found that the probability of work-related accidents increases by 5 percent to 6 percent when maximum daily temperatures top 90 degrees, compared to days when temperatures are 65 degrees to 70 degrees. It also cited a “clear increase” in numbers of days with temperatures over 90 degrees and 100 degrees over a four-decade period. Researchers cited higher risks in the construction industry. The study was released less than a month after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill (HB 433) that prevents local governments from requiring heat-exposure protections for workers. It also prevents local governments from placing wage requirements on contractors. The heat-related part of the bill came after the Miami-Dade County Commission last year considered a proposal to require construction and agriculture companies to take steps such as ensuring that workers have access to water. Under federal law, employers are responsible for “providing workplaces free of known safety and health hazards (also known as the ‘general duty’ clause). This includes protecting workers from heat-related hazards.” However, there is no federal OSHA standard to protect workers from heat exposure, and an ongoing process to develop one is expected to take several years.
» DeSantis signs controversial bill scrubbing ‘climate change’ from Florida policy
Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a controversial energy bill that includes repealing parts of state law about greenhouse-gas emissions and another measure that calls for ending state investments in companies linked to the Chinese government and military. DeSantis announced the approvals online, saying the bills “will keep windmills off our beaches, gas in our tanks and China out of our state.” In addition to making changes related to greenhouse-gas emissions, the energy bill (HB 1645) will ban offshore wind-energy generation and calls for the Florida Public Service Commission to develop a “cost-effective” energy infrastructure “resilient to natural and man-made threats.” During this year’s legislative session, Democrats and environmental groups criticized the bill, in part because of how it addresses greenhouse-gas emissions. For example, it will eliminate part of current law that says, “The Legislature finds that the state’s energy security can be increased by lessening dependence on foreign oil; that the impacts of global climate change can be reduced through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; and that the implementation of alternative energy technologies can be a source of new jobs and employment opportunities for many Floridians.”
» School board sued for removal of children’s books
A federal lawsuit filed last Wednesday challenges the constitutionality of decisions by Nassau County school officials to remove or restrict access to library books, including the children’s book And Tango Makes Three. Attorneys for the co-authors of And Tango Makes Three, parents and students filed the lawsuit in the federal Middle District of Florida, alleging violations of the First Amendment and Florida public-meetings laws. The lawsuit came as Escambia County faces a separate federal-court challenge to its decision to remove And Tango Makes Three, which tells the story of two male penguins who raised a penguin chick at New York’s Central Park Zoo. The book’s co-authors, Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson, also are plaintiffs in the Escambia case. Wednesday’s lawsuit alleges that Nassau County school officials removed And Tango Makes Three in fall 2023 after a request from the conservative group Citizens Defending Freedom. The lawsuit said Nassau County indicated it removed the book because it was “weeding” books that had been rarely checked out. But attorneys for the plaintiffs disputed that explanation and said the removal stemmed from anti-LGBTQ bias. “Defendants had no statutory, pedagogical or logical basis to remove Tango from the district’s public school libraries,” the lawsuit said. “Rather, the circumstances surrounding defendants’ unlawful removal of Tango establish that they made that decision for a single, unconstitutional reason: their disagreement with the book’s content and viewpoint in violation of the plaintiffs’ First Amendment rights.” The lawsuit said the school district removed or restricted 36 books after receiving challenges. It alleges that officials made decisions outside of public meetings, in violation of state laws. The Nassau County case was filed a day after U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor sent the Escambia County case to mediation and scheduled a March 4, 2025, trial date.

GIDEON’S GHOSTS HAVE GRIEVANCES
‘Make no mistake, we will do everything in our power to topple this cookie castle.’
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
Workers at the steampunk-style Gideon’s Bakehouse at Disney Springs have announced plans to unionize after capturing the attention of customers near and far earlier this week, with claims shared online of ghastly low pay, unsanitary working conditions and alleged retaliation for speaking up about it.
Organized under the moniker “the Ghosts of Gideon,” a group of workers at Gideon’s Disney Springs location (it’s unclear how many) shared their concerns with Orlando Weekly in a press release over the weekend, then went public with their demands for change at the popular bakery on Reddit and Instagram.
Bakery ownership and leadership “have built a toxic empire of lies,” the group shared on a Ghosts of Gideon Instagram account. “We feel unsafe, underpaid, and are being severely taken advantage of, purely so they can reap a fortune.”
According to the Ghosts of Gideon, the bakery rakes in upward of $40,000 each day — a figure they can see on their cashier’s till, one employee told Orlando Weekly. Meanwhile, front-of-house staff at the shop earn just $8.98 an hour — the bare minimum that employers in Florida can legally pay workers who customarily receive direct wages in tips.
This low pay rate, the collective says, forces workers living in one of Florida’s most expensive
other allegations, from insufficient cleaning procedures for baking sheets and an inefficient and performative cold brew procedure (shaking each drink “bartender style”) to a lack of safety and training procedures for emergency situations such as a fire or bomb threat, a lack of fire exit from the kitchen and a lack of ADA compliance in staff areas, such that an employee using a wheelchair or other mobility aid would not be able to maneuver behind the service counter or through the kitchen.
They also decry a lack of cooling measures for staff working outside. According to workers, Gideon’s dress code requires them to wear long pants and all black clothes, and they say — unlike other employees on the Disney Springs property — Gideon’s staff working outdoors do not have access to fans or any other form of relief from heat exposure when Florida’s temperatures rise.
Long pants are not required for restaurant staff under Florida health and safety guidelines, but many restaurant owners prohibit them for risk management reasons.
“It comes down to ownership favoring an aesthetic over what is needed,” one employee, who identified themselves only as GG over the phone, told Orlando Weekly Monday.
Despite reports of record heat in recent years, Florida does not have any state or federal standard for protecting employees from extreme heat on the job. Even more, Florida lawmakers recently approved a new law at the behest of corporate lobbyists ensuring that local governments could not require employers to provide even basic protections against heat exposure either.
“I ask you not to run to the pitchforks and hear our side,” Lewis wrote.“I hope we’ve earned at least that much in our own community.”
Lewis said he felt confident “that everyone is treated with care and respect.”
Lewis called the Ghosts of Gideon collective’s concerns “accusations” made by “an anonymous source” in a statement emailed to Orlando Weekly following the initial publication of this story.
“As soon as these accusations went public, we talked to each and every member of our crew to be sure they felt safe and heard, reminding them that they are valued and we’re all in this together,” Lewis said, emphasizing that he himself is a small business owner, not a faceless corporation. His statement also assured readers that Gideon’s Bakehouse “fully with all health and safety regulations.”
Gideon’s Bakehouse was first born in 2016, opening up shop at Orlando’s East End Market in Audubon Park. A second location opened in Disney Springs to much (and ongoing) fanfare in June 2020. The Ghosts take pride in the Disney Springs location, which notoriously features a 30-minute or longer virtual queue just to enter, stating, “The cookies are good, but make no mistake ... the customers come for us.”
According to GG, talks of organizing for improvements at the Disney Springs location began with an intent to unionize. They themselves used to work a union-represented job up in New York.
“There’s the Unite Here at Disney Springs, and we saw what the other restaurants were going through recently,” they shared.
metro areas to rely on the public for tips, on top of their $6 mega-cookies and $5-$8 cold brews.
Lackluster pay is a major point of grievance in the eight-page demand letter the Ghosts sent to company leadership on May 10. In the letter, they say that they were told at a May 6 staff meeting they “could no longer ‘ask for’ tips.’”
Restaurant tipping, especially in counter-service operations like Gideon’s, is currently a hot topic across the country. “This decision has caused each of us to suffer immensely. We demand a $400.00 bonus per pay period to be paid to every employee that has worked since this policy was implemented to compensate for the dramatic drop in wages that we have suffered,” wrote the collective of bakery employees.
A new job listing shared online for Gideon’s Bakehouse at Disney Springs actually lists the base pay rate for front of house staff as $8.88 an hour — 10 cents below Florida’s legal minimum wage. Orlando Weekly reached out to Gideon’s Bakehouse for comment on this seemingly illegal pay rate. (Gideon’s Bakehouse owner Steve Lewis told Orlando Weekly after initial publication of this story that the sub-minimum pay rate was a mistake and that they were trying to get it updated.)
Beyond pay, the Ghosts of Gideon also alleged unsafe and unfair working conditions. The demand letter voices a dizzying array of
As GG sees it, “We have a narcissistic, greedy owner who wants form over function, and is not willing to allow employees to voice any concerns without your immediate firing.”
The Ghosts of Gideon collective has alleged that company leadership immediately began firing or targeting employees at the Disney Springs location within days of staff sending their demand letter.
Under federal labor law, it is illegal for an employer to fire or otherwise retaliate against an employee for organizing a union, or for engaging in other protected “concerted activities.”
This includes “when two or more employees take action for their mutual aid or protection regarding terms and conditions of employment,” according to the National Labor Relations Board, the federal agency that enforces private sector employees’ organizing rights.
Violations of workers’ organizing rights constitute what’s known as an “unfair labor practice.” Workers who believe their rights have been violated can file a charge with the NLRB.
Gideon’s Bakehouse owner and creator Steve Lewis shared an informal statement in an Instagram story posted on the Gideon’s Bakehouse account, which only lasts 24 hours before disappearing.
Within that statement, Lewis claimed that much of what had been represented by Ghosts of Gideon was “either misleading or false.”
Late last month, workers at five nonunion Disney Springs restaurants — owned by third-party company Delaware North — announced their own plans to organize with Unite Here Local 737, a labor union that already represents roughly 18,000 Disney World employees, as well as local hotel workers.
After going public with their concerns, the Ghosts of Gideon social media account shared a post announcing they, too, had begun the process of organizing a union with Unite Here Local 362, a local that similarly represents thousands of Disney World employees, including those who work in attractions, vacation planning, custodial and at the toll plaza.
Out of all employment sectors, food and beverage services has one of the lowest unionization rates in the country, with just about 1.4 percent of workers in the sector unionized as of 2023, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
However, public support for labor unions in the U.S. is high. Data shows that unionized workers earn more than their nonunion counterparts on average, and are more likely to have job benefits like paid sick leave.
Moreover, Disney World in Orlando represents a sort of “island of union power,” as labor reporter and author Hamilton Nolan once put it, in a right-to-work state where just about 6 percent of workers have union representation. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

Orlando’s Lineage Coffee Roasting called out for donating coffee to anti-abortion nonprofit
BY MCKENNA SCHUELER
Lineage Coffee Roasting, based in Orlando, is doing damage control after being accused online of supporting Choices Women’s Clinic, a religious nonprofit organization that operates two anti-abortion pregnancy centers in Central Florida — with a third on the way.
Last February, the local specialty coffee roaster supplied coffee for a Choices fundraising event, “Lattes for Life,” meant to promote their work in promoting alternatives to abortion. Choices also named Lineage Coffee as a 2024 corporate sponsor for their annual “Walk for Life” fundraiser in an Instagram Reel published last month.
After a Reddit post blew up last weekend, however, identifying the connection between the nonprofit and coffee roaster, Choices’ social media post was promptly deleted and re-uploaded to exclude mention of Lineage Coffee.
Lineage has since apologized for their “unofficial policy” of supporting local groups that ask them for coffee for events, and has denied entering into any agreements with them in 2024.
“Until now, it’s been our unofficial policy to try to respond to as many coffee donation requests as we are able to,” read a social media post published by Lineage Coffee Roasting. “Our goal in this was to broadly support the local communities around us to grow and flourish.”
Comments are turned off for the post, where Lineage acknowledges in a statement that it was brought to their attention that they had donated coffee to a nonprofit that’s tied to groups that lobby to restrict abortion access.
The statement did not explicitly identify Choices Women’s Clinic by name, which is connected to national anti-abortion groups like Heartbeat International and Care Net.
with the Assemblies of God. Their business messaging, however, does not explicitly mention their personal faith.
Orlando Weekly reached out to Choices Women’s Clinic for clarification on their list of 2024 Walk for Life corporate sponsors, and did not receive a response ahead of publication.
Choices Women’s Clinic, an religious 501(c)3 nonprofit based in Orlando, is an advocate for abolishing abortion access altogether. Founded in 1983 as “True Life Choice,” the nonprofit today operates two facilities offering free pregnancy tests, free ultrasounds and “information” about abortion, with one location in downtown Orlando off Colonial Drive and another in Oviedo, near the University of Central Florida.
Crisis pregnancy centers are facilities that often advertise abortion services without actually offering them as an option. State records show that Choices’ facility in Orlando is licensed as a clinical laboratory, but not licensed as a health care clinic, despite advertising free ultrasounds and describing itself as a “medical clinic.” Its location in Oviedo doesn’t show up in the state’s licensing database at all. Choices lists the names of licensed registered nurses and licensed sonographers online, but it’s unclear which facilities they staff.
Outrage erupted on a local Reddit forum after Lineage was named as a ‘corporate sponsor’ of Choices Orlando
“We don’t support this and the fracturing effect that followed,” the post from Lineage Coffee continues. “This was not ok and it’s our job to thoroughly vet any organization we support in this way.”
Lineage Coffee Roasting, a decade-old coffee staple in the Orlando area, did not acknowledge in their public statement why they were listed by Choices Women’s Clinic as a corporate sponsor for the nonprofit’s 2024 Walk for Life event, along with local entities like Advent Health for Women, the Crossman & Co. commercial real estate agency and others businesses.
Ryan Wilcox, a co-owner of Lineage Coffee, told Orlando Weekly by email, however, that they could not find any records or requests for coffee donations for the 2024 Walk for Life event.
He also clarified that, beyond contributing coffee to the 2023 Lattes for Life event, they do not have any other agreements nor do they have record of any financial contributions to the nonprofit. “We don’t have any ongoing or future relationship with this organization,” said Wilcox.
Owners and Orlando residents Justine and Jarrett Johnson are personally open about attending One Church, a local church affiliated
Such anti-abortion facilities, also known as “pregnancy resource centers,” are known for using manipulative and deceptive tactics to convince pregnant people not to obtain an abortion, like lying about how far along a person is in their pregnancy. They often open up shop near real abortion clinics.
Choices Orlando (choicesorlando.com), a website set up to attract pregnant people, uses health-oriented messaging and says things like “You have options.” Choices Friends (choicesfriends.com), however — meant to solicit donors and more openly stocked with anti-abortion propaganda than Choices Orlando — explicitly boasts that their new, third location in Kissimmee is located a “half-mile” from Planned Parenthood, the city’s only licensed abortion clinic. That new location is slated to open next month with a stated goal to “CHANGE abortion” in the Orlando area “Until there are ZERO.” According to Expose Fake Clinics, a campaign of Abortion Access Front, Choices Women’s Clinic is one of over 160 crisis pregnancy centers in Florida, outnumbering actual abortion clinics more than three to one.
Some of these anti-abortion centers (Choices not included) even receive state funding through Florida’s “alternatives to abortion” program, established by Gov. Jeb Bush’s administration in 2005. That program, operated by the Florida Pregnancy Care Network nonprofit and loosely overseen by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, received a five-fold funding increase last year. Do you work at Lineage Coffee and have thoughts about your employer’s relationship to Choices? We want to hear from you (and can protect your identity). Downtown Orlando parking garages now closed for entry after 11 p.m. on weekends
As part of an ongoing effort to ensure safety and manage crowds, the City of Orlando is now limiting entry to downtown parking garages after 11 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The city, along with the Orlando Police Department, quietly put the measure into effect May 10.
Under the new measure, parking garages within the downtown core will no longer allow entry or reentry after 11 p.m. on weekend nights. Garages with adjoining residential buildings will remain staffed and will require drivers to show proof of residency to be allowed entry after 11 p.m.
Downtown bar owners and nightlife workers have taken to social media to express dismay. Eric Fuller, an owner of Celine Orlando nightclub, told a Spectrum 13 reporter that the reductions in already scarce parking, on top of the permit the city now requires businesses to obtain to sell alcohol after midnight, are “making it harder to do business.”
The garage closure time change is just one of several initiatives taken by the city to further safety in downtown, said City of Orlando Public Information Officer Ashley Papagni.
“This includes the launch of our Orlando Connect and the Safety Awareness For Everyone program, as well as code changes to further enhance visitor safety that is aimed at securing private parking lots, making adjustments to our noise ordinance, extending the nightclub moratorium and requiring late-night businesses serving alcohol after midnight to obtain an After-Midnight Alcohol Sales permit,” Papagni told Orlando Weekly
The move is the latest in a string of policies put into place to reshape downtown from its nightlife focus to a more family-friendly hub.
Earlier this year, the city extended its moratorium on downtown nightclubs and bars for another six months. Prompted by concerns such as a high concentration of nightclubs downtown and safety and security issues, the moratorium was initially enacted as an ordinance in March 2023, then extended for another six months in August.
City commissioners voted in March to extend the moratorium through Sept. 20, 2024.

“MITZI MORRIS: LIVE AT THE COME ON INN”
(Brown Venue, Lowndes Shakespeare Center)
It’s been over a decade since Mitzi Morris — the ditzy mid-century drag diva devised by writer/ performer Kevin Kriegel — last dazzled Orlando Fringe audiences with her dizzy double-entendres. So it feels wonderful to welcome Mitzi’s distinctive comedic cabaret styling back to the naughtily named Come On Inn with a warm hand.
Dressed to the eights in a sparkling floral schmatte, Orlando’s favorite IHOP hostess sings standards by the likes of Cole Porter and Frank Sinatra with her trademark-pending tuneful Minnesota twang, accompanied by a swingin’ piped-in backing band. Mitzi’s between-song banter is filled with Hedwig-worthy one-liners and wacked-out anecdotes about her showbiz career, starting with her first onstage role (as a grape in Grapes of Wrath), through her short-lived porn stardom and failed audition for Dirty Dancing although she occasionally confuses her own backstory with the plots of golden age musicals.
Mitzi may suffer from Florence Foster Jenkinslevel self-delusion, but Kriegel himself is a killer chanteuse. Can Mitzi Morris still sustain an hourplus solo show after all this time off stage? Darn rootin’ tootin’ fresh & fruity, she can!
“DANNY FEEDBACK TO THE FUTURE”
(Pink Venue, Lowndes Shakespeare Center)
Writer/director Danny Feedback, Orlando’s own bombastically braggadocious guitar god
with a rubber-faced resemblance to Jim Carrey, got his treasured effects pedal nabbed by a Benny Hill bandit. Now, with the help of bassist Dr. Doc (Dirt McCoy), drummer Sniff Tannen (Evan Shafran) and the spirit of Elvis (Cesar Marquez), Danny must travel back to the past to retrieve it. Inevitably, he messes with the time-space continuum, threatening to unmake musical history, which can only be saved through puerile parodies of vintage jukebox hits.
As acid-rockabilly musicians, this trio is the real deal. Their fire safety-themed rendition of “Shake Rattle & Roll” could have come right off of Cleveland radio circa 1955, if it weren’t for Danny’s feedback-generating humping of his amp.
Feedback does a Vegas-ready skinny Elvis impression during an ode to hot dogs (sung to the tune of “Hound Dog”), as well as credible takes on Roy Orbison and Little Richard favorites, all with an up-tempo underground edge.
Before you buy tickets for the kiddies, be aware that this is less a straightforward musical than a DIY rock concert with sophomorically scatological skits sandwiched between the golden oldies. Feedback blends his foul-mouthed characters into Back to the Future’s filmic mythology with surprising success, and the prop-based audience participation gags — including a smell-o-vision prank — would make John Waters grin. Several of the gross-out gags are simply groaners, with many bits built around middle-school misogyny, but you can’t deny Feedback recaptures the anarchic energy of early rock & roll with a postmodern punk sensibility.
I first saw Danny’s “Crack Rock Opera” about 15 years ago, and despite being an objective hot mess, “Danny FeedBack to the Future” is (believe it or not) by far their most coherent and polished production so far. I acknowledge that I enjoyed it far more than the average befuddled audience member, a notable number of whom walked out during the preview … but they were probably just a bunch of pedalphiles (don’t forget that hard L). However, if you happen to enjoy the sweet smell of bananas and bullshit, you might just find that Fringe and Feedback are a freakily fine fit.
“THE
ESTATE SALE”
(Blue Venue, Lowndes Shakespeare Center)
For my wife, a thrift store is truly the happiest place on earth, and she’s infected me with a thirst for vintage hunting. She has a kindred spirit in professional estate sale organizer and comic Kelly Dee, who has blended the community-building buzz of a rummage sale with a bounty of big laughs in this hilarious hybrid of one-woman comedy and shopping opportunity.
Raised in Queens by discount merchandise resellers who were rumored to be in the mob, Dee’s family moved to Florida and flipped salvage from Disney’s lost-and-found auctions, launching her on a lifelong collecting spree that’s now led to this midlife-crisis fire sale. Nearly everything on stage — from groovy threads and Life magazines to Stallone DVDs — is available for purchase before or after the performances, during which Dee sorts through her detritus while deftly delivering deceptively offhand monologues, whose casualness
belies their careful construction. Nobody — especially not Fringe artists — ever escapes their childhood unscathed, but Dee (with the help of co-writer Stew Jamesson and director Lauren O’Quinn) has upcycled her scars into a sidesplitting stand-up set with a one-of-a-kind interactive hook. Anecdotes similar to Dee’s about her Cuban athlete mother and Irish ex-cop father are affecting, yet not unheard-of at Fringe; however, I guarantee no other Festival artist will lament her failed relationships with van dwellers and methheads before brandishing a Jesus-shaped dildo.
Just be warned: This “Estate Sale” will inspire you to clear out your literal and metaphorical attic, if only in order to make room for more musthave finds.
“CONFESSIONS OF A THEME PARK WORKER”
(Scarlet Venue, Orlando Family Stage)
Raised during the 1980s to be a “Disney adult” by toxic parents who accidentally abandoned her in a Magic Kingdom restaurant at age 3, writer/ director Terri Fae Erskine took an entry-level job at Walt Disney World straight out of high school, and went on to work in frontline entertainment roles at nearly every major and minor themed attraction in Central Florida. Those bone- and brain-breaking gigs gave her riotous raw material for “Confessions of a Theme Park Worker,” a scathingly satirical solo show overstuffed with hysterical horror stories. During her multi-decade tours of duty in Touristland, Erskine has been assaulted by Christian kids during the Night of Joy concert

event and summoned to the Orange County courthouse in her Halloween Horror Nights scareactor costume (complete with chainsaw). I’ve known Erskine — a natural-born raconteur — for 25 years, but I’ve never before heard some of these amazing anecdotes about breastfeeding Kongfrontation riders or nearly getting eaten during Gatorland’s Jumparoo show. And although the tone is mostly funny and foul-mouthed, Terri’s tale about crying inside Eeyore’s costume while cradling a terminally ill child gave me serious feels.
With little more than a chair and a mouse-ear hat, Erskine uses well-motivated movement to animate her monologue, which doesn’t wear out its welcome at barely 45 minutes; if anything, the ending is bit too abrupt and could use more parting words. Whether you’re a current (or recovering) cast member yourself, or you’re one of the annual passholes that makes their lives a living hell, this comedic “Confession” will have you howling “amen” with laughter.
“QUEER UP!”
(Pink Venue, Lowndes Shakespeare Center) Midway between a comedic cabaret and selfhelp drama, “Queer Up!” lets writer/star Natalie Anne Doliner narrate the story of her life as a Kinsey Scale level-six lesbian who’s been married as many times as King Henry VIII — and not only to other women. She’s accompanied onstage by Marcie Schwalm as her homophobic Jewish
mother; dancer David Houde as her “pre-frontal chorus” inner man; and musician Ned Wilkinson, who accompanies the trio on tuneful songs from the likes of Indigo Girls, Cat Stevens and Les Misérables, many with wittily lesbianized lyrics. As someone who has been challenging gender norms since kindergarten, Doliner has plenty of doleful memories to share between songs, from the grade school “wedding” that ended in tears, to her long estrangement from her mother and alcoholism. Thankfully, director Fred Berning, Jr. helps keep the monologues visually interesting, with Houde acting as Doliner’s dynamic shadow, and rainbow-centric lighting by Berning Jr. and Rowyn Sam.
While it’s inherent in the nature of an autobiographical show like this to be self-centered and self-serving (as when glossing over marriages to a number of “narcissistic straight men” I happen to know), I was happy to see Doliner’s mom given a moment of grace to unload her own burdens, rather than remaining a stock villain. As for the inflammatory-to-some title, Doliner advocates for “queer” as an all-inclusive alternative to LGBTQQIA2S+ (“which could be a bank code’), and calls “queering up” a prouder vertical version of coming out. “Visibility matters” and “love is love” may not be especially groundbreaking or statements to make at Fringe, but the polished performers of “Queer Up!” are saying them with three-part harmony that’s hard to resist.

“THE STAKEOUT BY MARTIN DOCKERY”
(Gold Venue, Orlando Museum of Art)
Longtime Fringe-favorite writer/performer Martin Dockery is back in Orlando again with another brain-bending dramedy directed by Vanessa Quesnelle, which will linger in your mind long after its chilling final fadeout.
“The Stakeout” sees two suit-and-tie wearing FBI agents — Dockery as a veteran of the can-andstring era on the eve of retirement, and Andrew Broaddus as a rookie on his first day out of the academy — sitting in a surveillance van, surveilling another van that’s surveilling them right back.
After eavesdropping on a distressing domestic conversation, the younger one becomes vulnerable and verbose, triggering an increasingly surreal avalanche of circular conversations centered around cyclically repeated phrases.
In this knockoff noir universe where cop show clichés are made concrete, the rapid-fire rat-tattat dialogue sounds like Sam Spade as written by Samuel Beckett, performed by Abbott & Costello and produced by Dick Wolf. Dockery still has an evocatively absurdist way with words (“Relationships are dune buggies driven by monkeys who have lost their keys”), but scratch that nonsensical surface and you’ll find a distressingly personal parable about absent fathers, abandoned children and the pressures that can tear apart a loving home.
Like many of Dockery’s plays, “The Stakeout” starts out deceptively pedestrian, then metamorphosizes into a metaphysical parable that would make Rod Serling proud. I might not have become quite as emotionally invested as I was in his elegiac “Moonlight After Midnight,” and it wasn’t as cathartic to intellectually unpack as “Inescapable” (which he’s been reprising as a 24-hour marathon). But as always, there are few things at Fringe more mesmerizing than Martin Dockery’s haunting imagination.
“TIGER DAUGHTER, OR: HOW I BROUGHT MY IMMIGRANT MOTHER ULTIMATE SHAME?”
(BYOV, Renaissance Theatre)
As the offspring of an upwardly mobile Singaporean immigrant, a kid who was pushed to fulfill her mother’s American Dream of playing Carnegie Hall by age 12, Charlene Kaye’s career instead as a rock star makes her every tiger mom’s worst nightmare. Fortunately for Fringe audiences, her fraught familial relationships make funny fodder for this autobiographical stand-up set, supported by a slideshow of archival photos and embarrassing text messages.
Taking the stage in a gold lamé jacket, Kaye (under Jennifer Monaco’s direction) exhibits exuberant physicality, whether she’s slinging around her electric guitar, throwing a temper tantrum on the floor, or crouching at the apron to interact with the audience. She shares choice anecdotes from her Asian-American adolescence with a JewishRussian stepdad, as well as from her time touring with San Fermin and Starkid (starring Darren Criss), but her desperate attempts to win mom’s
approval form the emotional throughline.
A few topic transitions could stand some tightening, and I wish we got to hear more than just a brief sample of Kaye’s musical talents. But Charlene’s delirious depictions of her meddling mom’s epic eccentricities — from her eternal helmet-head hairdo to her propensity for taking thirst-trap photos in doctors’ offices — are relatably ridiculous regardless of your background, as are universal observations like, “You don’t have to understand somebody to love them.”
“COCAINE BEAR: THE OPERA” (Peach Venue, Orlando Family Stage)
You don’t need to have seen the hit horror-comedy movie Cocaine Bear, heard of the real-life 1985 incident it’s very loosely based on, or even snorted Bolivian marching powder yourself in order to enjoy Opera del Sol’s consistently entertaining mashup of high-brow art and the lowest common denominator.
The show starts smartly with a mock Masterpiece Theater-esque video welcome from pants-free writer/director Eric Pinder, who has taken instantly recognizable melodies from operas by Handel, Bizet and Mozart and rewritten the lyrics to fit this ridiculous plot. The classically trained ensemble gives it their all, hitting both the high notes and low humor with gusto.
Highlights include Jose-Manuel Lopez as a coke-addled drug smuggler skydiving to Bugs Bunny’s favorite Barber of Seville selections; Maeghin Mueller’s overwrought Puccini aria in an eye-watering tracksuit; and furry-suited David Lee Smith as the titular tanked-up ursine, whose every appearance ends in a gorily goofy evisceration. Perhaps the audience’s biggest applause was earned by Jessica Hoehn, whose oversexed park ranger nearly sets the forest on fire.
Everyone on stage can do this immortal music justice, which makes it disappointing that the harsh microphone mix and overbearing backing tracks made understanding Pinder’s witty words hard work during the opening performance. However, I had no such problem following his fleet-footed direction, which has all the performers perfectly striking an appropriately schlocky, slapstick tone. Every Fringe needs a good cinematic spoof, and “Cocaine Bear” serves up its cracked comedy complete with a side of spectacular singing.
“HOWDY,
STRANGER”
(Pink Venue, Lowndes Shakespeare Center)
Jean (writer/performer Luca Torrens) just wants to be a lawman like his sheriff father, despite having no taste for tequila or killing. Assigned to patrol no man’s land with only Buttermilk — his temperamental hobbyhorse — for company, Jean gets so bored he considers arresting a cactus, then tries to catch a notorious horse thief and ends up stranded alone in the desert, where he meets a helpful stranger offering a devilish deal.
“Howdy, Stranger” is a cockeyed queer comedy that seems lovingly cobbled together out of old cowboy clichés, which have been liberally seasoned with a twist of post-modern positive thinking. It generates more gentle chuckles than big belly

laughs, and I found my focus fading through the final scenes. But Torrens is an appealingly amiable stage presence who displays fine command of their instruments, especially on their handful of hummable country-western guitar tunes.
With an uplifting underlying message about self-acceptance, this one-person Old West fable could be a fine family show, if you set aside some mildly suggestive jokes and a Grimm finale.
“BRAIN BROS PRESENTS: UBER CHRONICLES”
(Brown Venue, Lowndes Shakespeare Center) Driving rideshares in his 2015 Kia during the COVID lockdown taught writer/performer Narada Owens the importance of slowing down and being chill. He collaborated with Andrew “Fryemixes” Frye to turn those mellow vibes into a 27-track rap album he released last fall, and his show “Uber Chronicles” is a semi-improvised live experience set to those tunes. Accompanied (at some performances) by loop-mixing beatboxer Caleb Labarre, Owens leads audiences on a loose musical journey, singing over some of his deftly written verses about puking Uber passengers and getting pulled over by the police. Several of the songs are certified bangers that had me bopping my head to Owens’ artful rhymes.
Those titular tales take up a surprisingly small portion of the show, with Owens casually interacting with the audience throughout many of the instrumentals. There’s a section where he passes out colored pens so attendees can contribute their own rideshare stories; in other sections, he leads the group in breathing exercises or does a goofy dance. The press preview was particularly surreal, since for several segments he simply narrated what he would normally do instead of doing it, so there’s no knowing what you’ll actually see — Owens might Facetime his mom in the Philippines or perform an inspirational TED-style talk.
Narada Owens is a chaotically charismatic stage presence whose work defies easy categorization, and while I’d normally advise a director to help him structure and focus his show, I suspect his unique artistic spirit may be untameable. I for one was entertained, but if you can’t tune into Owens’ lo-fi frequency, you might feel more “WTF” than “5 Star Rating.”
“JULIET:
A REVENGE COMEDY”
(Silver Venue, Orlando Family Stage)
Back in 2018, Vancouver’s Monster Theatre scored at the Orlando Fringe with “’Til Death,” their deconstructionist take on the wives of Henry VIII, around the time the musical SIX about the same subject was exploding. This year, with & Juliet still blowing up on Broadway, the troupe is back with their own award-winning evisceration of Shakespeare’s Verona tragedy,“Juliet: A Revenge Comedy.” Just don’t expect any expensive sets or ear-splitting pop tunes here, because these clever comics doth teach the torches to burn bright with little more than their nimble brains and bodies. After endless centuries of stabbing herself to death for theatergoers’ amusement, Romeo’s doomed child bride, Juliet (Lili Beaudoin), has
somehow managed to break the cycle of her script and burst through the fourth wall into our world. Unmoored in the literary space-time continuum, she travels through the Bard’s canon to rescue his suicidal females from being fridged. In a bravura performance, Carly Pokoradi embodies the 20-odd characters she encounters, switching swiftly from an airheaded Ophelia and asp-clasping Cleopatra to an oversexed Miranda and homicidal Lady Macbeth, each rendered with delirious distinctness. Waiting in the wings to revert their retcon is Billy Shakes himself (director Ryan Gladstone, who co-wrote with Pippa Mackie), who impersonates witches and wizards in an attempt to restore his patriarchal narrative.
This cast is equally as fluent with Elizabethan verse as they are with physical comedy, and the sly feminist commentary they’ve woven into these time-worn works hilariously complements their tightly choreographed pratfalls. If you’re intrigued by the idea of a Wizard of Oz -esque Excellent Adventure that allows Shakespeare’s ill-used women to finally have their say, “Juliet: A Revenge Comedy” is a delicious dish best served while Fringe is piping hot.
“HYDE”
(Peach Venue, Orlando Family Stage)
PUSH Physical Theatre, creators of the award-winning 2022 hit “Generic Male,” return to Orlando for the world premiere of “Hyde,” an atmospheric experiment in dance theater inspired
by Robert Louis Stevenson’s horror novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that’s told from the monster’s perspective. Ashley Jones plays the titular terror, who enlists two performers (Heather Stevenson and Darren Stevenson) in retelling his story through thrilling, gravity-defying movement pieces set to Ricky Desktop, Peter Gundry and Gungor.
The trio, who wrote and directed the show collaboratively, reinvent the iconic transformation scene, sway in a deathly waltz, and mirror each other in a show-stopping shadow routine. However, just as these breathtaking demonstrations of dance combat and hand-balancing acrobatics are reaching their climax, they are interrupted by an inopportune phone call from an eagerly expected late arrival.
That launches “Hyde” into another fourth wall-breaking interrogation of the audience, whom he initially teases with seemingly silly interactive games before threatening to “do something terrible” and challenging us to stop him. Interspersed in all this are fragments of mournful monologues that hint a deeper meaning behind Hyde’s increasingly confounding confrontations with his viewers.
PUSH’s last production was the kind of show I could recommend unreservedly to nearly any Fringe-goer, but this work-in-progress is a far pricklier piece that features just as much thoughtful imagination, but in a far less accessible package. I personally felt the moody lighting was too murky, the ending was too enigmatic, and the overall
balance tipped too far in favor of monologuing rather than movement. But for modern dance devotees who appreciate exceptional weight-sharing, as well as lovers of avant-garde expressionism with a gothic edge, “Hyde” will be another must-see.
“AT THE TABLE WITH KEITH BROWN”
(Silver Venue, Orlando Family Stage)
Canadian magician Keith Brown makes a welcome return to Orlando Fringe with “At the Table,” a new show that was born in his bedroom as a pandemic-era Zoom production. Four lucky audience members at each performance get the best seats in the house right on stage with Keith; the rest of us get to experience his astonishing up-close illusions on larger-than life video.
There are no life-threatening stunts, disappearing tigers or tired metamorphosis effects on tap here, only skillful sleight-of-hand so flawless that it holds up on a giant screen. Twists on a classic ace-twisting trick and “invisible” card gags are elevated by Brown’s drolly self-deprecating humor, as he deploys his dexterous wizardry without the overbearing ego associated with many namebrand illusionists.
To paraphrase Albert Einstein, “Everything is a miracle,” and that’s especially evident after an hour in Brown’s talented hands. Keith says that the harder he practices, the luckier he gets, but Orlando magic fans are the ones who are lucky that he’s here.

TAKING CARE OF PLEASURE
d.b.a., an offspring bar by the Strand, crafts stiff sips and cheffy snacks in Mills 50
BY FAIYAZ KARA
Adecade after Joe and Alda Rees opened the Strand in the heart of Mills 50, an offshoot was quietly born next door to the perennial neighborhood favorite this past March. It’s doing business as d.b.a., a cocktail bar with cheffy snacks, breezy vibe and, like its parent operation, a midcentury aesthetic courtesy of Alda and her daughter Olivia. Olivia, in fact, plays the role of greeter, server and vinyl spinner, as do her brothers, Leo and Zack, who also appeared quite comfortable behind the terrazzo-walled bar mixing and swizzling quaffs. Seeing their children take the reins of d.b.a. has to be a satisfying sight for Joe and Alda, even though the siblings were coy about fully committing to running the neighborhood bar as a career. Hey, they’re still young and with their whole lives ahead of them, but they’re also adept at what they do, and they do it without a lick of ’tude.
There was, however, a shameless lick or two on my part. The object of desire: a creamy green-curry aioli brushed alongside a superbly fresh tuna tartare ($19) positioned atop triangular snaps of lavash. We even bypassed the
pimiento cheese spread that came with the warm pretzel ($6.50) and scooped that aioli up with torn shreds of the Olde Hearth twister. Not that the pimiento cheese was lacking in any way. It’s just that we wanted more of the other comforting spread.
Just as impressive was the octopus salad ($14) and its bracing vinaigrette. Red onion and red pepper lent the bowl of brainy goodness ceviche-like feels. What’s more, the side of crusty bread helped soak up some of the boozy doozies crafted by the liver-kicking crew behind the bar.
A caipirinha ($10) and mezcal-forward “jaguar’s nap” ($10) started things off, followed by a daiquiri ($8) and a refresher called the “carnival cruise” ($17) fashioned from rum and absinthe with pineapple, orgeat, curaçao and Peychaud’s bitters. Be warned, it stealthily sails you into an ocean of crapulence, and I can see why there’s a limit of only two of these per guest.
After a few ounces of this ship-shape sipper, we had no choice but to go overboard with more food. Two items — pan con tomate ($11) dusted with cotija and basil that tasted like a
savory bread pudding, and cacio e pepe deviled eggs ($13) with pecorino and bottarga — may be familiar to regulars of the Strand. Like the warm pretzel and pimiento, they’re also on the menu next door. After polishing off the duck flatbread ($14) boldened with caramelized onions, tomato jam, goat cheese and a balsamic drizzle — not, thankfully, a deluge — we noticed that most everything we ordered had a bread component.
“I’m suffering from bread fatigue,” said the pal, and I didn’t think either the Old Bay chips or barbecue cashew nuts — the only menu items we didn’t order — would help alleviate the carb coma. There are other, less bready items from the Strand’s bill of fare that could easily port over to d.b.a., so here’s hoping we see some fried mushrooms, snapper cakes, or broccoli and labneh on the other side of the wall soon.
That aside, d.b.a. is everything lovers of the Strand would expect from a bar operated by Joe and Alda, who, by the way, are as low-key and as high-performing a restaurant couple as you’ll ever meet.
Whether it’s dinner at the Strand, or drinks and snacks at d.b.a., the two are just different sides of the same coin.

COUCHSURFING
Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.
BY STEVE SCHNEIDER
Premieres Wednesday:
Buying London — The latest real-estate reality series is set in England’s capital, where the agents of DORE Global broker the swankiest properties for industry kingpin David Daggers. With a name like that, I wouldn’t be surprised if the big reveal here is that the show is actually a stealth entry in the Benoit Blanc mysteries. (Netflix)
Chip ’n’ Dale: Park Life — The second half of Season 2 brings more misadventures of the beloved chipmunk pals, whose charming larceny is (in this iteration at least) rendered entirely nonverbally. But hey, you try talking with somebody else’s nuts in your mouth. (Disney+)
Toughest Forces on Earth — Get up close and personal with special-ops soldiers from around the globe in a docuseries brought to us by the same folks who made Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons. Up next: a trip into the kitchen at Outback Steakhouse, The Toughest Steak on the Planet. (Netflix)
Trying — Season 4 of the British comedy shuttles us forward six years, to rendezvous with parents Nikki and Jason just as they’re learning
their adopted daughter wants to get closer to her birth mother. But if they lose her, at least they’ve got a spare. (Which seems to be the modus operandi over there.) (Apple TV+)
Premieres Thursday:
The 1% Club — Ordinary, mundane trivia is out the window in a game that emphasizes logic and reasoning, with as much as $100,000 awaiting the contestant who aces a question only 1 percent of Americans can answer. From what we see around us every day, that question appears to be “What is the difference between ‘lie’ and ‘lay’?” (Prime Video)
Evil — A supersized Season 4 is the swan song for our cast of supernatural detectives, who will finally learn what happened to the baby that was bred from Kristen’s stolen eggs. Let’s hope our side is carrying a whole bunch of holy water, because this sort of thing never ends well for Foghorn Leghorn. (Paramount+)
Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf — A fugitive is blackmailed into competing in an underground martial-arts tournament in an anime series that’s built on the scanned movements of real-life fighters. How about that! I wonder what all they had to be blackmailed with. (Netflix)
Tires — The scion of an auto-repair magnate tries to keep the family business afloat in a new series from twice-disgraced sorta-SNLer Shane Gillis. Jesus, if he keeps failing upward like this, they’re going to make him Speaker of the House. (Netflix)
Premieres Friday:
Atlas — Marooned on a distant planet, Jennifer Lopez realizes her only chance of saving Earth from robot marauders hinges on embracing the AI she’s always shunned. I don’t know what’s more offensive: the obvious propaganda on behalf of job-killing technology, or the fact they thought JLo was the one who could sell this con to us. What’s next, Diddy advocating for relaxed child-labor laws? (Netflix)
The Beach Boys — Desperate to not be accused of favoritism by whoever’s controlling Brian Wilson’s credit cards now, Disney follows up its recent Beatles bonanza with a documentary about the group some people feel was actually better. (Mostly, rock critics over 50 and ’Nam vets who stood too close to loud artillery.) I sure hope this doesn’t mean Peter Jackson is planning on subjecting us to six hours of Mike Love. (Disney+)
DOM — The third and final season of the Brazilian crime drama finds its harried protagonists struggling to stave off the fearsome effects of lung cancer and gang violence. Capitalize those last two, and you could convince me they’re substitute hypemen for the Wu-Tang Clan. (Prime Video)
Illusions for Sale: The Rise and Fall of Generación Zoe — The very existence of this investigative documentary equals sweet revenge to all the poor suckers who lost their shirt to Leonardo Cositorto, Argentina’s disgraced “crypto pastor.” Gosh, if only there were a single word in that designation that guaranteed you were about to be taken for a ride by an utterly unscrupulous scam artist. (And to be honest, “crypto” doesn’t fill me with confidence either.) (Netflix)
The Kardashians — Season 5 is expected to cover the arrival of Rocky Barker, who was born last fall to Kourtney K. and her husband, Travis Barker. In real life, this metabolic wonder of a kid is already 15 years old, 6 foot 2 and negotiating a crossover appearance on Physical: 100. (Hulu)
Romário: The Guy — Brazilian football great Romário de Souza Faria is getting an entire docuseries to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his victory in the 1994 World Cup — a feat that’s all the more remarkable when you consider his father had been kidnapped mere weeks before. Intense athletic focus?
“Nah, I can’t stand the son of a bitch,” clarifies Romário. (Max)
Franco Escamilla: Ladies’ Man — The Mexican comic revisits his teenage dating history, mining big laughs from every time his romantic aspirations crashed and burned. Yeeeeeah, thank God that’s all over by the time we hit 30. (Netflix)
Mulligan — In Part 2 of the post-apocalyptic animated comedy, Matty and his fellow survivors face fresh challenges to rebuilding America, including power outages and general ineptitude. I don’t know, that sounds pretty much like everything’s back to normal to me. (Netflix)
My Oni Girl — Japan’s Studio Colorido offers a feature-length anime in which a high-school outcast meets a young girl who happens to be a demon — the first clue being that as soon as she appears, snow magically begins to fall. Yeah, I had heard Lindsay Lohan was making a comeback. (Netflix)
The Test — Season 3 of the sports docuseries follows the Australian men’s cricket team to England, to go up against that country’s fierce Ashes squad and an equally combative crew from India. Because if you think soccer is exciting, you can be entertained by anything. (Prime Video)

BLISS OUT?
The ODrone Festival presents the best in Orlandoborn enveloping ambience for a full day
BY MATTHEW MOYER
“Drones can be calming, soothing, unnerving or anything at all,” explains Orlando musician and ODrone organizer Phil Penley.
While this may sound vague on the surface, it’s a fairly succinct explanation of the endless sonic vistas possible in drone music — a form of sound practice that can take the form of gentle background hums or ear-bleeding walls of sound, and all points in between. From Pauline Oliveros to Terry Riley, from Sunn 0))) to Earth, from
of Drone Day — and it’s worth noting this is the only city in Florida participating in this international bliss-out — Saturday’s event brings together a legion of area soundscapers, all exploring the “infinite possibilities” of minimal, sustained tones. Organized by electronic musicians and members of the Circuit Church collective Derek Morton, Phil Penley and Mac Rutan, this is a first for Orlando.
Each organizer first experienced drone in a musical context in a completely different way — which speaks to the dynamism hidden in these sounds. Rutan remembers encountering the drones hidden in the Beatles’ dalliances with Indian music in “Tomorrow Never Knows” and “Within You Without You”; Morton recalls experimenting endlessly with pedals and Casios and his old band opening for space-case Sonic Boom; Penley speaks of inspiration found after encountering the music of local ambient artists like Glass Hive right here in Orlando Weekly.
Confirmed for the Saturday fest are Pothole Skinny, Jahari Medina, danielfuzztone, Bikini Oracle, She Droned in Pixels, Dan Reaves, Black Wick, Terrapin, Aarons Home and many more, with one or two surprise additions inevitable. Musicians will be accompanied visually by projections from a handful of promising local video artists.
“I have already seen quite a few of the bands and projects perform but I know folks are catering their sets to ‘celebrate the drone,’ so to speak,” says Morton.“We are setting up the outdoor stage performances so that they overlap, which means it’s going to be one continuous block of music and encourage a bit more improvisation during the overlapping sections.”
ODrone happens both inside and outside at the Nook, and if those logistics sound familiar, then you’ve probably attended one of the Circuit Church events that have been happening monthly at that Milk District bar since the pandemic year of 2020. ODrone’s organizers are all Circuit Church alumni, headed up by Morton, and all-in on the Church mission of encouraging new performers and creating musical communities.
“The 17-band lineup was mainly organized through word of mouth,” says Morton. “I have been playing Circuit Church since 2019, so I had some idea of the folks that might want to participate, and combined with recommendations from Phil and Mac it was quite easy to fill up the bill quickly. I think all of us wanted to keep the focus local to Central Florida.”

the work they’re putting into ODrone, despite the speeding Brightline train of logistics headed their way — perhaps regular drone intake does have curative properties, after all.
“It is a lot of work but I am thrilled that artists and the Circuit Church members are so excited to contribute their time and effort to making this happen,” says Morton.
“Derek is leading logistics, organizing artist and partner outreach, schedules, resources, volunteers, press, running the main ODrone show at the Nook, all while creating new music and being a husband and dad,” explains Rutan. “I’m doing outreach to future partners, artists, venues, workshops, social media and running the ODrone Eve event at Uncle Lou’s. Phil is on outreach, research, legal, workshops and more.”
ODrone is indeed not confined to just a oneand-done Saturday at the Nook. A pre-show (“ODrone Eve”) on Friday at Uncle Lou’s has been added, featuring seven performers and the ODrone Multimedia Orchestra. Additionally, Morton and company promise a continuing series of workshops and educational events that will foster more awareness and participation with an eye toward a sequel next year.
“Workshops and events will continue after the main event [this week]. Community performances will continue to be nurtured by Circuit Church. For me, ODrone provides a community to serve my workshops to. I’m also a course director at Full Sail University for a course named Live Event Design in the Digital Arts and Design program,” says Rutan. “My ‘outside’ workshops and projects are an outlet for me to work irresponsibly. To be free and wild without the absolute need to meet the ‘standards of excellence’ required at work. I love both worlds, especially due to the interaction with people. If not for teaching, I would not have had the desire to organize these other community projects.”
Nocturnal Emissions to Éliane Radigue — and going way further back into classical and raga traditions — musicians and composers have been exploring the powers of sustained and hypnotic drone sounds stretching back decades, if not centuries.
Orlando sound enthusiasts can soon avail themselves of every monochromatic color and flavor of this subgenre during the inaugural, free ODrone Festival this weekend.
Coinciding with the worldwide head-nodding
The trio of organizers are also doing double duty as performers. Morton will play as Berz3rkr, an ambient-noise duo with Kit Wray (“he was the guitarist in a technical-metal band released on Metal Blade called Into the Moat”) and as half of Salty Jazz Crabs. Rutan throws down solo as Pulzwav, and performs as a member of the ODrone Multimedia Orchestra. Penley is set to perform as Left the Chat: “part experimentation in ambience and field recording and part personal study of orchestral music inspired by film and video game composers.”
The three are good-natured and surprisingly relaxed when talking to Orlando Weekly about
There is some irony to the fact that drone music — in the Western tradition, a type of music often composed by artists working alone that conveys sensations of isolation and separation — will here be a catalyst to gather people together for a day, and perhaps many days, courtesy of this ever-growing community.
“Drone in the context of this music festival led me unexpectedly to a community that I didn’t know I needed, and friendships that have enriched my life immensely over the past few months,” concludes Penley. “The drone is working some kind of magic in my life. The more I listen to the drone, the more I think it might be listening back.”

LOCAL RELEASES
While never especially prolific in either output or appearances, area sludge-metal band Hollow Leg have nonetheless earned a premier reputation in the Florida heavy underground through their consistent deadliness on both stage and record. Still, even for their own leisurely release pace, this latest recording lull has been the longest of their 14-year career. But, with practically no warning, this deep-slumbering volcano just awakened.
As long as their hiatus felt, though, it could’ve been permanent. While the pandemic sidelined every other band on Earth, it led to Hollow Leg’s resurrection.
“I actually had moved to Utah for a few years and started writing material for another project out in Salt Lake,” says guitarist and founding member Brent Lynch. “Well, pandemic hit and I started talking with [lead vocalist] Scott [Angelacos] and he wanted to hear what I was working on. He replied,‘This sounds like Hollow Leg’ … and so I flew back to visit my folks for Christmas and set up a jam with the fellas and next thing I knew I was flying back again a couple months later to look at houses and Hollow Leg was reborn.”
Now, they’re back and freshly creating with the new Dust EP, their first collection in five years. Returning from not just hibernation but the brink of existence, Hollow Leg are rising hard to reclaim their dominance. Across these five new songs are mountains of riffs and canyons of grooves. No, Hollow Leg haven’t changed one goddamn bit. Yes, that’s a very good thing.
Opening with lead single “Poison Bite,” Dust wastes no time, dropping in hard with gigantic riffage that bludgeons like a slo-mo piledriver. After that, “Sick Days” punches the
gas and thunders down the interstate like Satan’s 18-wheeler. From there, they just keep laying down their blues-thick sludge with ruthlessness and hellfire.
Hollow Leg are as grisly, virile and prime as they’ve ever been. And the surest sign that they’re fully back in business is that Dust is only the first chapter of a planned series or two EPs. Dust streams everywhere.
Hollow Leg will be performing at Hawt & Popular’s next zine release party alongside Breed, Weak, Hate It! and some wrestling matches at the end of this month. (6 p.m. Friday, May 31,
The S.P.O.T., $10)
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK
Fluxe, Stella, Doolittle, Saucers Over Washington, Still Pictures: As if answering my personal prayers to a vague agnostic conception of god, shoegaze is in an underground renaissance right now. This native showcase is proof that the fever is here locally. Consisting of Fluxe, Saucers Over Washington, Doolittle, Stella and Still Pictures, this five-band lineup is an extensive sampling of the area’s current class of shoegaze. Go worship with the fellowship of fuzz. (7 p.m. Saturday, May 25, Conduit, $15-$20)
Sexpill, Armor, Flask, Rosary: Orlando’s Moxie Booking is going extra hard here with a hardcore bill so dense with fury that oxygen tanks should probably be on standby. Houston’s Sexpill alone blast out thrillingly merciless noise punk that can swallow rooms whole. Add in Florida hardcore hellions Armor and Flask, as well as the debut of Orlando D-beat act Rosary, and you’ve got a blitzing night that’ll leave you battered, breathless and smiling. (8 p.m. Monday, May 27, Will’s Pub, $10-$15)
Returning from not just hibernation but the brink of existence, Hollow Leg are now rising to reclaim their dominance with vicious new music. The band are as grisly, virile and prime as they’ve ever been
Melanie Martinez, Beach Bunny, Men I Trust, Sofia Isella: While Melanie Martinez’s whims and presentation sometimes make me burst into laughter, you gotta give big credit to anyone trying to tilt the pop landscape to the left. The fact that Martinez is both mainstream-huge and fucking weird as shit makes her a special kind of cool. Her sound is modern and accessible, but everything behind it is arty to the point of absurdity.
This bill is loaded with opening acts worth seeing on their own. With a melodic instinct that rivals Alvvays, Chicago’s Beach Bunny are seriously one of today’s best indie-rock bands. Rounding out the lineup are buzzing Montreal indie-pop band Men I Trust and new L.A. alt-pop artist Sofia Isella. (6 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, Kia Center, $75-$125) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

Abortion Baddies Mobilize
Florida Access Network, a statewide abortion fund, hosts a community event focused on discussing the current stakes of Florida’s new six-week abortion ban, e ective May 1, and what folks can do to mobilize in support of abortion access. Florida voters will see a proposed constitutional amendment on their ballot come November that would strengthen abortion rights — so you might get to hear more about that, and how you can help spread the word. A near-total abortion ban in Florida spells disaster for abortion access across the entire South, not just Florida. The closest place to get an abortion after six weeks is now North Carolina or Virginia. FAN says this event is for all of the “abortion baddies” out there. Specifically, FAN shares that folks will “talk more in-depth about the consequences of these bans on our bodies, actions we
can take to provide for our communities right now and our collective visions for more just and liberating repro futures.” 6:30 p.m., Stardust Video and Co ee, 1842 E. Winter Park Road, stardustvideoandco ee.wordpress. com, free. — McKenna Schueler

Pamela Z
Have we got a holiday activity for you! Composer and multimedia artist Pamela Z was originally supposed to come to Central Florida in 2022 for a Master Artist residency at New Smyrna’s Atlantic Center. But like so many things that were supposed to happen during the years 2020-2022, plans changed. Last week, however, Pamela Z started her residency at the Atlantic Center and will be here through the end of the month. It’s a big deal. She works at the intersection of sound and vision, melding her voice with electronics and processed visuals. Pamela Z has been creatively active since the mid-1980s, with a résumé that includes performances all over the world, collaborations with the likes of Kronos Quartet and the Bang on a Can All Stars, numerous installations exhibited at galleries and a wealth of scores for film and dance. There is an outreach component to each residency, so Timucua Arts hosts her Monday evening for a presentation and multimedia performance of past and current works dubbed “Happy Accidents and Blurred Lines.” Come bask in her genius. 7:30 p.m., Timucua Arts Foundation, 2000 Summerlin Ave., timucua.com, free. — MM
