Hamburger

Mary’s closes its doors this week, a federal judge blocks part of Florida’s ‘intrusive’ anti-immigrant law, DeSantis calls climate-change preparation ‘the agenda of radical green zealots,’ and other news you may have missed.

» Hamburger Mary’s to close downtown location, looks to relocate After nearly two decades in downtown Orlando, storied LGBTQ+-owned restaurant Hamburger Mary’s will close its doors and look for a new location. Owner John Paonessa announced on Facebook the last day of operation for the 110 W. Church St. location will be Sunday, June 2. He said times have changed and points to a decrease in evening business at the location. Hamburger Mary’s plans to reopen in a different location, although a new location has yet to be announced. Paonessa said they’re currently in “negotiations/talks” with some venues. First opened in 2008, Hamburger Mary’s downtown Orlando location has served as a community hub for drag and live entertainment, known for its drag brunch and drag bingo events. Last year, the restaurant sued the state of Florida over a new law that contained penalties for venues that host any type of “adult live performance” with children under 18 present. The law was widely interpreted as a way for the state to punish and restrict venues that host drag events. “The lawsuit has affected revenues at Hamburger Mary’s,” Paonessa told Orlando Weekly in February, but “we are thrilled to be able to have taken the stand.” The lawsuit resulted in a block on the law statewide.

» Two candidates head to runoff for Orlando City Commission District 5 seat Shaniqua “Shan” Rose and Travaris McCurdy have advanced to a June 18 runoff in the special election race for City Council District 5 to replace City Commissioner Regina Hill, who was suspended from office by DeSantis after being indicted on charges of alleged fraud and elder abuse. Neither Rose nor McCurdy got more than 50 percent of the vote in the election held last Tuesday, thus triggering a runoff. Both advanced from a packed field of seven candidates vying for the seat. Unofficial election results show Rose received just under 25 percent of the vote, while McCurdy received 23 percent of the vote. Overall voter turnout in the district hovered around just 10 percent. Rose is a former city planner and executive director of Eatonville’s Community Redevelopment Agency. She’s also president of Eatonville nonprofit Change for the Community. McCurdy is a former Florida House representative (and former aide to Hill) who currently works for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. Both have said they wish to prioritize issues such as housing, economic development and public safety. District 5 covers parts of west downtown Orlando and neighborhoods west of I-4, including Parramore, Mercy Drive, Rock Lake and Ivey Lane.

» Federal judge blocks key part of Florida’s new immigration law

A federal judge last Wednesday blocked a key part of a 2023 law championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis that aimed to crack down on illegal immigration, finding the law “intrudes upon territory” under the responsibility of the federal government. The lawsuit, filed in July by the Farmworker Association of Florida, Inc. and individual plaintiffs, centers on part of the law (SB 1718) that threatens felony charges for people who transport an immigrant who “entered the United States in violation of law and has not been inspected by the federal government since his or her unlawful entry.” The plaintiffs asked for a preliminary injunction blocking that part of the law, arguing it is unconstitutionally vague and that the state lacks authority to regulate immigration. The preliminary injunction ruling this past week prohibits state and local officials from enforcing a section of the law dealing with transportation of people. The 2023 law — passed in the run-up to DeSantis’ unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination — is among a number of steps DeSantis and the GOP-controlled Florida Legislature have taken in recent years targeting undocumented immigrants.

» After DeSantis scrubs ‘climate change’ from state law, Florida begins repealing renewable energy goals

Carrying out a controversial law signed last week by Gov. Ron DeSantis, officials have started moving to repeal state renewable-energy goals. Those goals, put in place in 2022, have called for utilities to gradually increase the amount of renewable energy that they produce or buy until reaching 100 percent renewable energy in 2050. But a proposal published last week by the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Office of Energy would repeal a rule that includes the goals, saying it is “no longer necessary.” The new law (HB 1645) signed by DeSantis revamps state energy policies, including deleting part of a law that directed the Department of Agriculture and

Consumer Services to establish “goals and strategies for increasing the use of renewable energy in this state.” More broadly, the law, which will take effect July 1, will remove references in law to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, bar potential offshore wind-energy generation, and call for encouraging a “cost-effective and affordable energy supply.” DeSantis said in a post on social media that state officials are “restoring sanity in our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of the radical green zealots.”

» Meteorologists predict 2024 hurricane season will have ‘highest ever’ number of named storms

Things (and by things, we mean temperatures) are getting hot in Florida. And, because warmer water equates to more intense storms, forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are now predicting an “extraordinary” 2024 storm season. NOAA released a dire prediction for the upcoming storm season last week, calling for 17 to 25 named storms. Of those, eight to 13 are expected to become hurricanes. NOAA says there’s an 85 percent probability of an above average hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to Nov. 30. This “above average” prediction, which is also the highest ever for a May forecast, is based on a number of factors, including increasingly warming temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean as well as La Niña conditions forming in the Pacific, which can help storm formation by reducing wind shear. Besides La Niña and warmer than average water temps, the report also highlighted climate change as a major contributing factor.

LACKING RESOURCES

DeSantis approves state-funded ‘pregnancy and parenting’ website that will not provide any information about abortion, and may promote anti-abortion facilities

As abortion providers and people with unwanted pregnancies navigate the challenges of Florida’s new six-week abortion ban, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a bill, supported by anti-abortion groups, that directs the state to create a taxpayer-funded website offering “pregnancy and parenting resources.” But notably, it will contain no references advising users how to access abortion care.

Supporters of the bill (HB 415), approved by DeSantis on Friday, pitched it as a centralized resource that would offer information and resources related to pregnancy and parenting, including prenatal and postnatal services, social services, financial assistance, adoption services and mentorship programs for fathers — but notably, as opponents pointed out, no abortion-related information.

Florida Democrats in opposition to the bill tried to amend it to ensure all information on the taxpayer-funded website would be “medically accurate” and include “medically accurate information about abortions.”

Florida Rep. Anna V. Eskamani, D-Orlando, saw this as a way to make it a comprehensive resource capable of educating Floridians on all of their options, free of any political agenda.

“Let’s make sure that it’s accurate. Let’s make sure it’s comprehensive. Let’s make sure that it helps a person of every political background, of every ideology, of every income, of every faith,” Eskamani shared in a plea to her colleagues, ahead of the final vote on the bill in the Florida House.

“Let’s make sure that it’s truly a reliable source of information that isn’t coercive in nature, but provides objectivity for someone to make the right decision for them.”

Florida Rep. Rita Harris — the sponsor of the amendment to make sure all of the website’s information is “medically accurate” — put it bluntly. “Floridians deserve honest, accurate and transparent access to all their options, not a narrowly tailored list designed by extremists,” said Harris.

Florida’s GOP-dominated Legislature rejected attempts by Democrats to change the bill, which public testimony records show was supported by anti-abortion organizations like Florida Right to Life, Florida Voice for the Unborn, and the Florida Family Policy

Council — a nonprofit of “social conservative advocates” that also rails against the so-called “gay agenda” and is affiliated with national anti-abortion organizations like the Alliance Defending Freedom.

Florida Republican Berny Jacques, the House sponsor of the bill, blatantly called out Democrats for their proposed amendments in a mask-off moment on the House floor.

“It’s quite disturbing that some of my colleagues in this chamber are hell-bent on adding the killing of the unborn to a website that has to do with resources for parents,” Jacques chastised, going on to defend the bill as an effort to aid Florida families.

“This bill will go a long way towards providing key resources to pregnant women, expecting parents, fathers here in the state of Florida, to make sure that pregnancy is never a burden here in the state of Florida,” said Jacques.

The Senate version of the bill — ultimately abandoned in favor of the similar House version — was sponsored by Sen. Erin Grall, a Republican from Vero Beach who carried the bill last year that cleared the way for Florida’s six-week abortion ban.

Legislation filed by Eskamani and Democratic Sen. Lauren Book this year sought to require greater oversight of state-funded CPCs, but it ultimately died unceremoniously, without being granted a single hearing.

pregnancy centers in Florida that already receive taxpayer funds to stay in business.

These facilities, also known as crisis pregnancy centers, are generally run by religious organizations, and often describe themselves as “medical” or “health” clinics, even when they lack a state medical license or licensed medical staff.

Some are also known to use coercive tactics, such as spreading false information about alleged risks of abortion, providing false “due dates” or using disturbing visuals, to shame and ultimately deter pregnant people from obtaining abortions. Crisis pregnancy centers — which regularly advertise information about abortion, without providing it — outnumber actual licensed abortion clinics in Florida three to one, with over a dozen in Central Florida alone.

“It’s quite disturbing that some of my colleagues in this chamber are hell-bent on adding the killing of the unborn to a website that has to do with resources for parents,” said bill sponsor Rep. Berny Jacques in a mask-off moment on the House floor.

Under Florida’s existing “alternatives to abortion” program — first established by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush — the state already has a state contract with the Florida Pregnancy Care Network, a not-for-profit that keeps a running database of anti-abortion

Tax filings from the Florida Pregnancy Care Network show a few dozen CPCs are also funded in part by Floridians’ tax dollars (unlike abortion clinics, which are barred from receiving state or local funds).

Opponents to House Bill 415 worry the bill will funnel even more taxpayer money into a state website that will similarly promote these anti-abortion facilities.

“This website is another example of the state of Florida weaponizing public dollars and public agencies to pursue political agendas,” Eskamani told Orlando Weekly in a phone interview.

House Bill 415 includes a one-time $466,200 appropriation for the state Department of Health to establish the website, operational by Jan. 1, 2025. The department has been directed to contract with a third-party company to develop the website, and to consult with the state Agency for Health Care Administration — which has spread misleading information about abortion — and the Florida Department of Children and Families on its contents.

A Florida House staff analysis of the bill notes that similar websites have been developed in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Texas through their states’ own “alternatives to abortion” programs.

“Florida does not currently have a comprehensive state website containing information related to available public and private pregnancy and parenting resources,” the analysis adds. Some Democrats — and the Florida Parent Teachers Association — even supported the bill during early committee hearings on it. But Cheyenne Drews, deputy communications director for Progress Florida — an opponent of the bill — explained to Orlando Weekly that this occurred before the GOP bill sponsors made it clear they intended to keep any information about abortion services off the website, and that the website may in fact promote the anti-abortion pregnancy centers. A couple of Democrats on the House floor admitted as much, too.

The bill passed the House in a 83-33 vote in February largely along party lines, with only one Democrat — Rep. Lisa Dunkley — in support. A month later, it passed the Florida Senate in a 27-12 vote, with all Democrats opposed. Moving forward, Rep. Eskamani stressed that it’s important for Floridians to continue to “educate ourselves” about the state’s rules on abortion and the options for obtaining one either independently or with the help of an abortion fund.

“A lot of Floridians don’t think that they can access an abortion anymore because of the six-week ban,” Eskamani told Orlando Weekly. “And though they obviously are going to be a little bit limited and restricted here in the Sunshine State, we want to make sure that Floridians know they have options — and this website is not going to provide that resource whatsoever.”

Floridians will also have the chance this fall to vote on a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would extend Florida’s abortion limit from six weeks of pregnancy to roughly 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. That amendment, Amendment 4, will be on the November 2024 statewide ballot. mschueler@orlandoweekly.com

KAITROCK!

Orlando’s Kaitlyn Sardin is going viral with her fusion

of hip-hop and Irish dance

There are few better feelings than that of practicing a hobby, slowly honing your craft and then being able to spread the joy it brings you with others around you. Though it’s ultimately fulfilling, the pursuit can be a challenging undertaking. Orlando-based dancer Kaitlyn Sardin however, has achieved it, with a passion that she has embraced for 20 years now.

As a child, Sardin began dancing ballet at the Elizabeth Parsons School of Dance. During a ballet recital, she saw a performance of Irish dancing for the first time during the intermission and was immediately fascinated by it.

“It was the rhythm of it. It’s so much like a drumbeat, I was like ‘This is incredible.’ I was always obsessed with drums, and I was able to be my own drumbeat with this dance style, and it was so different from ballet,” Sardin says.“I remember thinking ‘I can make noise with this and not get in trouble?’ That was the biggest draw for me.”

From the age of 7 on she has been practicing Irish dance, beginning at the Watters Irish Dance School here in Central Florida. Now 26, she has seen multiple successes as a competitor in Irish dance, and made some very precious memories in her time competing.

“I did Irish dance competitively for about 15 years. At regional competitions, I’ve placed in the Top Five five times. I’ve also performed and won at the national level, where I qualified for Worlds. I was able to go to the world championships a couple of times and I won at the world championships four times,” Sardin shares.

More recently, she has started to see success building her presence online. In the late 2010s, she began experimenting with fusing Irish dancing with other styles of dance, posting her performances on Instagram and TikTok (@kaitrock). She has since cultivated a loyal following online, more recently going viral for her performance at a Snap! Orlando gallery opening. Though they met by happenstance, the resulting connection is what led to her opportunity to perform at the gallery.

“So it’s actually funny — Brian Cross, one of [the photographers in] Mochilla, found me two years ago, and we met in Orlando back in December. I met him and Denise Chaila, an Irish rapper, and we just really connected. And then last year in September they flew me over to Ireland to do a movie with them, so we just created this connection,” Sardin says. “Three months ago, Brian messaged me saying something like ‘Hey, me and Eric are about to do a gallery show in Orlando, and we would love for you to dance with us!’ To which I responded back with an ‘Absolutely!’ The

day before [the opening] they sent me the mix and I loved it so much! I was just so excited to get out there, and I’m so happy I did.”

Her current fusion of Irish dancing and hip-hop has proven to be very exciting for people to watch, though it isn’t without its challenges. Despite how long she’s been dancing, it can still be tough for Sardin to figure out how she wants to approach a song or performance sometimes.

“I always loved dancing to any music, but I think the biggest challenge is that sometimes with the fusion of dance styles it’s just such a weird rhythm, where you have to sit there and figure out ‘how can I make this work?’ and try it over and over.”

Despite this challenge, she believes the two styles complement each other and synergize well during her performances.

“They have very similar rhythms, and that’s the first thing I notice when I find a song. I’ll see how the bass sounds, but then I’ll listen for the drumbeat and if I see that I can re-create it with my feet then I go from there. I’ll see what movements feel right with the music. And that’s why I’ll usually do hip-hop, dancehall and Afrobeat, because they’re just so drum-heavy,” Sardin explains.

She doesn’t experience too much difficulty in picking songs to perform and post online, however. When asked her method for choosing a song, she’s very clear about her priority: “Honestly? If I love the song! If I can move to the song, then I’ll think ‘Yep, that’s the one!’”

Given how long she’s been dancing, Sardin has her fair share of inspirations in the space.

“Tinashe, Beyonce — they’re huge dancers and just the way they perform, how they captivate their audience, you can truly see how they’re feeling while they’re dancing,” she says. “As for Irish dance inspirations, Jean Butler and the way she uses her movement, as well as how she elevates Irish dancing with what she continues to add to it. Also Normani! Her and Victoria Monét always blow me away. They’re just so natural while dancing.”

Since sharing her videos online, she has amassed a following of people who weren’t even familiar with Irish dancing before they saw her work. However, she’s also received recognition from many accomplished dancers, something which always surprises her.

“I always get so happy when they see my performance to their music! I had Missy Elliott follow me on Twitter the other day and I was just in shock! I’ll dance just because I like a song, but when they [the artist of the song] comment or let me know they see it, it feels validating. Almost every person

so far that has commented on the music that I’ve danced to has been super supportive, and I’ve just been blown away by it.”

With all of this positive recognition, Sardin has also had to deal with some negative pushback from people who don’t understand or approve of her fusion of dance styles. While the response from Irish people themselves has been overwhelmingly positive for her so far, others can be quick to judge or throw doubt and insults in her direction instead — something she has learned how to deal with.

“Irish people love it! They’ve been so great, they’re always super supportive and they’re always like “I can’t believe I’m seeing my culture’s dance like this, I never would have thought I’d be able to see this fusion.” So I’m getting a lot of support from Irish people, and honestly even from a lot of American people. But sometimes there have just been a few people — who oftentimes aren’t even Irish — telling me I’m taking their culture,” Sardin says.

“I’ve been doing this style of dance for 20 years and have been training and learning it for all of that time. I’m also part Irish — and a lot of people don’t comment about that on other dancers who they assume are Irish, even when said dancer is actually not Irish. I usually ignore them because if you respond they’ll just keep going. A lot of my followers will respond back to them but I try to keep everything muted because it gets to be a lot at times. All of the very nice people have messaged me privately, and I’m always thankful to them for taking the time to be so kind.”

style now. But most of the basics that I will do are strictly Irish dancing,” Sardin laughs. “I can see exactly why they see that, I get it, but they’re not the same!”

She also appreciates the opportunity to inspire other people to follow their passion for dancing — especially now, when social media has changed the landscape of how a dancer can present themselves for the world to see.

“I definitely think social media has helped enhance the dancing space because there’s just many more opportunities to collaborate with people, and also so many different styles you can see and learn because of social media. I’m happy because social media also gets a lot of people to see this style of dance, and for some it’s a style of dance they thought they might never be able to do,” Sardin says. “But then they might see my videos and think ‘Wait, you look like me — I can do this too?’”

‘I was always obsessed with drums, and I was able to be my own drumbeat with this dance style’

“Whenever somebody tells me, ‘My child has always wanted to Irish dance but they were too afraid to until they saw your videos,’ it makes me very happy. Somebody recently messaged me that they’ve never seen an Irish dancer in braids, so they showed it to their dance teacher and now their teacher lets them wear braids to competitions. Things like that make me very happy to hear.”

While she has gone viral for her Irish dancing/ hip-hop fusion, it’s clear to anybody who sees her perform that even if she had gravitated toward a different style, Sardin would have always ended up as a dancer. Her passion for dancing shines through in every one of her performances.

Not all of the misguided commenters are totally negative, however. Sardin enjoys having the opportunity to educate people about some of the misconceptions they may have about Irish dancing as a style.

“A lot of people also will think that it’s tap dancing, which — there are a lot of similarities! And I definitely add a lot of tapping to it, especially my

“It has helped so much in my life, because I have found that dancing has been the easiest way for me to communicate my feelings. Dance has always been like walking, it just feels so natural to me. I feel like it’s helped my confidence, and just helped me find who I am as a person. It’s become something very special to me.”

a

A few weeks ago, I attended a press conference at SeaWorld Orlando where International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) CEO Jakob Wahl forecast a healthy travel season for North America’s theme park industry, with a predicted a 2 percent increase in attendance and 7 percent boost in spending. Wahl says those trends are being driven primarily by the lure of new family-friendly attractions aimed at younger visitors, and the growth of premium up-charge experiences. Recently, I got to preview two prime representatives of those revenue drivers: the new “Page to Stage” VIP tour of Cirque du Soleil’s Drawn to Life at Disney Springs, and the new DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios Florida.

Rumors swirled for almost a decade about the fate of Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone — Universal Orlando’s long-in-the-tooth land dedicated to faded franchises like Curious George, Fievel and Barney — which was at one point slated to become home to Super Nintendo World. Luckily, those plans shifted south to Epic Universe, and construction walls have recently come down to reveal a radical revamp of the child-centric area that this thrill-focused resort so desperately needs. Fans of the E.T. Adventure dark ride and Animal Actors show can rest assured that they remain as is, but in between them now lies the park’s first real new land (not counting 2023’s minor Minion Land makeover) since Diagon Alley’s arrival in 2014. Unfortunately, at first glance I found DreamWorks Land to be a downgrade from the area’s previous occupants. Fievel’s Playland was an elaborate multi-story wonderland with imaginative oversized props, a wide variety of play elements, and even a waterslide. Its replacement,

Shrek’s Swamp, although admirably accessible and probably easier to maintain, feels like a generic collection of single-story bridges and net climbs that you might find in any number of parks, with some ogre decor and a button-activated Pinocchio animatronic added to tie in with the IP.

Likewise, the basic structure of Curious George’s zoo remains, but the soaking waterplay elements have been tamed down and the former ball factory is barren. There are some new interactive areas where you can pound triggers to activate singing frogs or frolicking cats; I’m betting kids will get bored and break them before August. On the upside, the old Nuthouse kiddie coaster got upgraded with an eye-popping new color scheme and spiderweb props in its transformation into the drolly named Trolls Trollercoaster.

However, my initial disappointment in DreamWorks Land turned into delight when I discovered that Universal has doubled down on live entertainment in the area.

The meet-and-greet areas for characters from Gabby’s Dollhouse and Trolls are basic outdoor backdrops, and you can’t go inside Shrek’s new house, but it’s great to see him back in the park posing with the pitch-perfect Donkey puppet, whose Eddie Murphy mimicry still hits the mark. Also make sure you check out the interactive kung fu training class, with an on-screen animated avatar of Po driven by an offstage Jack Black

impersonator; the effect is an impressive step beyond Disney’s Turtle Talk with Crush, when the frame-rate isn’t stuttering.

By far the best place to encounter the characters is inside the DreamWorks Imagination Celebration show. As a one-time technician on the Barney show, I was skeptical going into the new occupant of its old in-the-round theater. Happily, show director Jason Horne and his talented team knocked it out of the park with this polished mini-musical featuring live singers, dynamic dancers, wrap-around projections and massive puppets, alongside familiar friends from favorite film franchise.

This is the one element of DreamWorks Land — not the overhyped Shrekzel, a dry pretzel with moss-colored cheese dip — that I’ll be returning to time and time again, even when I don’t have a kid in tow.

Other permanent Cirque du Soleil shows around the globe have long offered exclusive backstage tours and similar VIP offerings, and since May 24, Drawn to Life fans can go behind the scenes of their Disney Springs production with the “Page to Stage Signature Experience,” which I got to test-drive last month. Offered with the late shows on Fridays-Sundays, it starts with expedited check-in and snacks upon arrival, along with premium seating for the performance, followed by a 45ish-minute tour behind and beneath the custom-built venue.

Highlights of my tour, which was led by a friendly and knowledgeable guide, included: peeking in the crowded costuming and props departments; examining up-close set pieces such as Mary Blair’s animation desk, some of which include actual artifacts from the Walt Disney Studios archive; seeing the hoists and hydraulic lifts that help move the massive scenery and costumes; and spotting some hidden Easter eggs on stage that are ordinarily invisible from the audience. We also got a meet-and-greet with “Violin” and “Pencil,” who have performed with the show since opening, and received a souvenir parting gift.

I heartily recommend “Page to Stage” for hard-core Cirque groupies or anyone with a professional interest in technical theater, and would also suggest it for more general audiences with just a couple of caveats. Caveat No. 1, the coolest thing about my preview tour was that it was conducted while acrobats were rehearsing their acts onstage, which will not be the case for regular guests. And No. 2, while the $285 tour is only about a $50-$90 upcharge over the premium seats it includes, I actually prefer sightlines from the rear center of the theater, as opposed to those off-axis seats up front. If you aren’t deeply interested in the minute details that make Cirque so spectacular, you may be better off buying a back-row seat and spending the savings on tapas at nearby Jaleo.

PIT STOP

Smokemade Meats + Eats lures scores of barbecue fiends to Curry Ford West

Is there barbecue being served in this town better than the smoke-made meats and eats at Smokemade Meats + Eats? No. No, there isn’t. Pound for smoky pound, no one’s doing it better than pitmaestro Tyler Brunache. His regional barbecue style focuses on Central Texas, where beef, sausage and sauceless proteins rule, just like the barbecue gods of the Lone Star State intended. And that means seasonings are kept to a minimum as well, so that the flavor of the meat (smoked over Florida oak) speaks for itself.

“Eat me!” said the brisket ($17) when I first laid eyes on its barky curves. Or perhaps it was the echoes of the lady I cut off when I parked in the restaurant’s narrow lot. In any case, eat it I did and, mother of Matthew McConaughey, this brisket was alright, alright, alright. In fact, on that first visit, I had no choice but to order the brisket as they’d run out of pretty much everything else. Just like at the legendary barbecue joints in Texas, folks start lining up outside the weekend-only Hourglass District smokehouse at 8

a.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. “Our ribs and turkey usually sell out first,” Brunache says, and this being 4 p.m. on a Saturday, I expected a thin menu. So I was grateful I was able to enjoy the fat, 16-hour smoked brisket, simply seasoned with salt, pepper and Lawry’s, with a side of zingy tomato-zucchini salad ($4) and superb Dijon-slicked cole slaw ($4) crunched with kale and red onions.

My next visit was on a Friday at 2 p.m. and the pickin’s weren’t as slim, though they’d already run out of ribs, turkey and pulled pork. My pal and I didn’t sweat it, but the dry-brined half-chicken ($13) we ordered clearly did. Over some hot coals, that is. The resulting smoky succulence had us both marveling at this mother of a clucker. Next was the double-smoked hot gut sausage ($5), its beefy innards spiced with, among other things, cumin and turmeric. Brunache recommended we try it with the vinegar-based sauce spiked with chili flakes, and it was a spot-on suggestion. Hell, I enjoyed

that tangy, mustard-based house sauce with the brisket the second time ’round. Of the sides we were able to procure, we felt fortunate to score some cheddar grits ($4) as well as the pinto beans ($4) — the beans’ thick, chili-like consistency and sugarless sapor will please any Texan barbecue purist. Brunache was also offering a Friday lunch special — brisket cheesesteak ($18) on an Olde Hearth hoagie roll — that we couldn’t pass up. And, yes, it was great. It heated up well in the oven the following day too.

Also on our tray were four slices of yeasty white bread that Brunache’s crew bakes fresh daily.“This bread reminds me of my childhood,” said my teary-eyed wife on my third stop at the restaurant. “My grandmother would make bread like this.” We visited on this particular Saturday afternoon for another special — Black Angus beef ribs ($45 for 1.25 pounds). It’s rubbed with a blend of black pepper, salt, garlic and onion powder before being smoked for 10 hours in a 1,000-gallon Primitive Pit smoker out back. It’s then rested for 10 hours before sliced to order. Needless to say, the charred slab of brontosaurus was nothing short of incredible (and it paired well with a side of jalapeño-dill potato salad). I will say that on every one of my visits, I’ve been unable to resist the lure of banana pudding ($6). Like most everything here, it’s made from scratch. While other desserts, like bread pudding ($6) and gooey butter cake ($6), are also offered, I’ll probably find myself ordering the banana pudding again. Unless it’s sold out.

Nevertheless, it’s glorious stuff, all of it. But Brunache is a humble guy, and he’s quick to acknowledge the influence Goldee’s Barbecue in Fort Worth has had on his success. “I could not put into words what they have meant to my barbecue journey,” he says about the highly lauded joint in which he staged. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to spend time with those guys.” Indeed, Smokemade Meats + Eats can be seen as the Florida wing of the James Beard-nominated restaurant that Texas Monthly crowned as the best barbecue joint in the state. That might explain why he was out of ribs, turkey and pulled pork again on this third visit. Admittedly, I’ve had all three back when Brunache popped up with his smaller smoker at East End Market shortly after the pandemic. But a brick-and-mortar operation is a whole different animal, one that he and his crew are still trying to tame. When the man sleeps, I can’t say. But there’s no question that Brunache’s rapid rise to fame, and the consistent queues for his ’cue, are smoking out the competition. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

OPENINGS and CLOSINGS:

The 6,700-square-foot Park Avenue concept by Artistry Restaurants (Boca, Atlantic Beer & Oyster) we told you about back in December 2022 finally has a name. The Chapman & Chase Lounge will open at 500 S. Park Ave. and celebrate the history of Winter Park. The name is a reference to Winter Park founders Loring Augustus Chase and Oliver Everett Chapman, and the restaurant will present a menu of the best Florida has to offer — fresh fish and seafood as well as locally raised beef and plenty of citrus — in a space inspired by fin de siècle style. An opening date hasn’t been announced … Across the street, Bricks & Bowls is now open and serving its handhelds on house-made, brick-sized foccacia bread, as well as chef-crafted bowls, soups and cookies, at 331 S. Park Ave. … Tim Liu, the man behind Mikado Sushi in MetroWest and Boku Sushi in Maitland, will open Oza Izakaya, styled after the unpretentious post-work haunts in Kyoto, June 10 at 5310 Central Florida Parkway in Williamsburg … The recently opened Voodoo Bayou at 7525 W. Sand Lake Road in Dr. Phillips has unveiled a speakeasy concept within the space called Roka Hula, a 21-and-over modern Asian tiki bar promising a “provocative journey into a hidden world of exotic cocktails and exquisite elevated dishes.” Just sit in the chairs next to the leopards, pet the spotted kitties and you’ll be sipping cocktails with the face of Pablo Escobar in no time … Garden Tiger, a sister concept to The Heavy in Winter Park, has soft-opened in a mid-century warehouse at 1900 Alden Road in Ivanhoe Village. In addition to plants and furnishings, Garden Tiger will offer a menu of small bites, drinks and, eventually, brunch … Persimmon Hollow will close its Lake Eola brewery at 227 N. Eola Drive on May 30 after almost four years at the lakeside location. The DeLand flagship will remain open.

COUCHSURFING

Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss this week.

Premieres Wednesday:

Bionic — Brazilian moviemaking goes “cyberpunk” with a thriller that has two sisters competing for the long-jump crown in a future world where athletes get high-tech physical enhancement. If you think sports is bad now, wait until parents start demanding to check some poor kid’s underwear for a USB port. (Netflix)

Colors of Evil: Red — A crusading Polish prosecutor tries to get justice for a mom whose daughter was found dead on the beach. Next time, they’re going to UPS the remains to her like civilized people, dammit! (Netflix)

Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult — Learn what happened when a bunch of TikTok dancers signed on with a management company that turned out to be a nest of religious wackos. (Netflix)

Traces of Love — In this sci-fi-inflected Brazilian romcom, a jilted groom gets unstuck in time (yep, just like Billy Pilgrim) after he’s left at the altar. Hopefully, he’ll get sent far enough back to cancel the catering. (Max)

Premieres Thursday:

Eric — Benedict Cumberbatch stars in a six-episode limited series that chronicles the

mental breakdown of a TV puppeteer who believes a 7-foot-tall blue puppet can help him find his missing son. In the shocking final episode, Eric the puppet is about to crack the case when Larry David shows up and throttles him into a coma. (Netflix)

Geek Girl — The 2013 YA novel becomes a live-action series about a supposedly awkward high-school outcast who gets tapped to become a top fashion model. I guess we still haven’t outgrown the trope of the bookworm that nobody notices is beautiful until she takes off her glasses. And she’s the one this show expects us to believe is “neurodivergent?” (Netflix)

Pyramid Game — A South Korean schoolgirl places dead last in a pupil popularity contest, forcing her to take desperate measures in order to avoid the violent bullying that comes with the title. If she lives, she’s a shoo-in to major in either PR or mixed martial arts. (Paramount+)

We Are Lady Parts — Season 2 of the comedy about an all-female Muslim punk band features a special appearance by none other than activist and Novel laureate Malala Yousafzai. Or as it’s called in the business, a “guest shot.” (Peacock)

Premieres Saturday:

Trixie Motel: Drag Me Home — In the second season of the Drag Race superstar’s very own reality series, she’s appealing to the HGN crowd by doing an extreme makeover on her 100-year-old California home. Oh, and the place just might happen to be haunted, which means she’s got the A&E demo covered as well. If the show gets a Season 3, expect her to muscle in on the History Channel’s turf by introducing us to the Nazis next door. (Max)

Premieres Sunday:

Mayor of Kingstown Season 3 — Everybody’s treating it like some kind of miracle that this crime-thriller only went 16 months between seasons, when star Jeremy Renner had to recover from nearly getting cut in half by a snowplow. Meanwhile, The Boys is returning in a mere two weeks, and Erin Moriarty had to learn to act through so much Botox they could have cut her offa Mount Rushmore. (Paramount+)

Premieres Tuesday:

The Acolyte — The latest series set in the Star Wars universe has the Jedi trying to solve a crime spree that takes place in the days before Episode I. In a fun metafictional twist, the crimes are actually Episodes I through III. (Disney+)

Premieres Friday:

How to Ruin Love: The Proposal — The How to Ruin Christmas franchise gets a spinoff in which a South African woman accuses her boyfriend of cheating, only to find out he was planning on popping the question. (And no, the question wasn’t going to be “Would you be willing to try polyamory?”) (Netflix)

Jim Henson: Idea Man — Ron Howard directed this intimate retrospective of the genius puppeteer’s life and work, which includes interviews with his surviving family members and artistic collaborators. In a rare show of restraint, Frank Oz actually waited for the cameras to stop rolling before declaring he could have made a better movie. (Disney+)

The Outlaws — Back for Season 3 after a twoyear hiatus, our cast of petty crooks are now trying to go straight, but complications arise when they become the prime suspects in a murder. Come on, guys! Like Boeing ever let that slow them down. (Prime Video)

Stopmotion — Live action and (you guessed it) stop-motion animation converge in a horror flick about a film artist whose sculpted creations become terrifyingly real. If it happened to Henry Selick, he’d mostly be afraid of the credit going to Tim Burton. (Shudder)

Clipped — Ed O’Neill is Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and Laurence Fishburne is coach Doc Rivers in a series dramatization of the scandal that erupted in 2014 when Sterling’s racist rants were exposed to the nation. In retrospect, he just had really lousy timing. If he had waited two years, he could have been President! (Hulu)

Exhuma — In South Korea’s biggest box-office hit of the year (so far), a shaman and her assistant investigate a family grave that appears to be the source of a deadly curse. Meanwhile, up in North Korea, the biggest problem with family graves is that they’re crowding out the basketball court in Kim’s backyard. (VOD and various digital platforms; comes to Shudder June 14)

Jo Koy: Live from Brooklyn — Koy’s fifth stand-up special for Netflix was taped last November, two months before his now-infamous flameout at the Golden Globes. That’s so long ago, he wasn’t even pissed off at Barbie yet. He was still railing against Betsy Wetsy. (Netflix)

The Price of Nonna’s Inheritance — The sequel to the 2022 Italian comedy The Price of Family finds Carola and Anna planning to murder their grandma’s new boyfriend, because they’re convinced he’s after her money. Hey, maybe he just likes that party trick she does with the ping-pong balls. (Netflix)

THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE

Hawt & Popular gets ready to rumble with a zine release, live music and wrestling

“I’m really proud of Orlando’s art scene right now. And I feel like people who feel like they need to move out to LA or New York or Austin or any of those places, they’re not looking hard enough at what we got going on here.”

When you hear there’s an event happening in Orlando called “Parking Lot of Pain,” you’re going to want to learn more. That’s how Orlando Weekly found ourselves on the phone with an artist and writer who goes under the moniker of Doug Luggage, reflecting on Orlando’s DIY scene and sharing all the essential details about the agony-soaked asphalt in question.

The event is part of the gala release party for Hawt & Popular Volume 3.2, the latest installment of Luggage’s anthology zine, featuring local writings, visual art and photography. This particular issue features all of the above, plus stunning photos of the “This Is Hasselberry” hardcore/metal fest, chronicles of workers with awful bosses and

UFO sightings. (This is deep Central Florida, in other words.)

While the pandemic may have put a temporary pause to Luggage and co.’s zine creations, these days Hawt & Popular is back with a vengeance. A literal vengeance, in fact. The May 31 release party will feature four wrestling matches with the independent wrestlers who make up Sparks Booking. The pro-grapps will be followed by a show featuring four metal bands: Breed, Hollow Leg, Weak and Hate It!, held in the parking lot of The S.P.O.T., a DIY venue in east Orlando that recently celebrated its first anniversary. There will be about 50 physical copies of the issue available for purchase, and a digital version will be available online in June. For Luggage, zines are a labor of love and a medium for cultural expression and resistance.“I think zines are really cool because of that punk rock DIY ethic that comes with self-publishing. And I love how there’s no real rules to it,” says

Luggage. “I never really know what I’m getting when I grab one. And the freedom that people have to spotlight anybody or publish anyone’s words that’s probably not getting published anywhere else, I think is really cool.”

The Hawt & Popular release show is not the sole soiree Luggage is involved in this weekend. On Saturday, in collaboration with Ghouls & Ghouls, Punx Prom is happening. As the website describes, it’s “a not-so-formal night of music and friends with less slow dancing and more slam dancing.” The event will be held at Castle Smoke, a smoke shop and DIY haven in Casselberry.

“We’re going for this end-of-the-school-year, adult punk prom thing going on. And we’re going to decorate the space,” says Luggage.“We’re going to have a whole photobooth setup and then of course some killer music.” In addition to the prom vibes, there are six acts playing — including Snotnoze Saleem and M.A.C.E. — along with zine and food vendors throughout the night.

(Make sure to peep the Strawberry Switchbladehomage flyer on Instagram: @ghoulsandghouls.)

A Pensacola native, Luggage entered the Orlando DIY scene in 2016 and believes the community is on the precipice of breaking through on countless fronts. “The scene is, to me, the strongest it’s been since I got involved,” says Luggage.

As DIY venues and artists are increasingly priced out of downtown Orlando and thereabouts due to unchecked corporate greed, it’s beautiful to see new spaces emerge in new areas. The S.P.O.T. and Castle Smoke are vibrant testament to the enduring DIY spirit.

“There’s so many cool things happening right now,” Luggage says,“and I think Orlando is having a moment. It’s really anybody’s time right now.” And on Friday, your time will be 6 p.m. at the Parking Lot of Pain. music@orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES

These days, Orlando indie cult hero Marc With a C is open about his gender fluidity. But long before coming out, Marc had already been artistically exploring this with side project Claire and the Potatoes.

For this conceptual pop act, which existed from 2012 to 2014, Marc wrote from the perspective of a young female character, who was voiced and portrayed by singer Leslie Rising. After a debut release of covers (The I Do in I Doubt EP), the experiment blossomed into a full band with Milk Carton Superstars’ Jim Myers and Guy Larmay as the rhythm section. The group went on to release a full album of originals (Have an Okay Time With Claire and the Potatoes!) and a final single (“The Final Single”) in 2014 before disbanding.

But this year, to ring in the 10th anniversary of their album, Claire and the Potatoes have quietly conspired to make a brand-new song. Just released on May 24, “Obligatory Reunion Song (Way Before When)” is a fresh, lovely breath from a brief but noteworthy chapter of Orlando music history, made even sweeter by its surprise. For nostalgia’s sake alone, “Obligatory Reunion

more twee-pop with a cleaner, warmer setting that allows the easy melody to shine in its own simple perfection. And, remarkably, it’s one of the finest singles the Potatoes have ever made. “Obligatory Reunion Song” now streams everywhere. It’s a beckoning new gateway to dig back into the subversive charm of Claire and the Potatoes.

CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK

Youth to the Front All Ages Show: The Orlando music scene is fostering its next wave in ways more active and conscious than ever before, and one of the strongest tides trying to lift these aspiring ships is Orlando Girls Rock Camp. Beyond their transformative summer camp, they’ve recently been organizing more shows designed to give area youth unprecedented scene access. More than just safe spaces that allow kids to enjoy live music, these all-ages matinees are incubator showcases that actually give them the spotlight. This lineup includes young femme-forward rock bands Preying Mantease and The Pheromones, as well as just-starting acts Catnap and S.M.O.P. featuring OGRC campers. Come glimpse the future now. (2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, Will’s Pub, $10-$20)

The Rolling Stones: With a career of selling out stadiums for nearly 60 years, the Rolling Stones are unparalleled in legend. Still, misgivings about the potential performance quality of a band led by octogenarians aren’t just reasonable, they’re inevitable. But as their last big show here in 2015 showed, the Stones are no mere mortals. Somehow, against all known laws of biology, their stage prowess continues to evade the clutches of Father Time.

Buttressed by younger players, the band of seasoned pros remains sturdy. The eternal Mick Jagger, however, still lays it on the line as if his legacy were at stake each night. Add in iconic songs that are veritable touchstones of Western civilization and a Rolling Stones show is as close to a universal communal experience as it gets nowadays. (8 p.m. Monday, June 3, Camping World Stadium, $97-$495)

The Woggles, The Tremolords, The BellTowers: Orlando has long had a soft spot for classic garage rock. The Hate Bombs, who became The Tremolords, are one of the most passionately beloved bands in our scene’s history. Even after three decades, their shows are lively, high-kicking affairs that not only draw the crowds but, more importantly, get their asses shaking.

3 QUESTIONS FOR SUPERBITCH

Though they’re pretty new, Superbitch are easily one of the best things going in the Florida underground. The Tampa band deals in damaged, skronky artpunk excellence with unhinged live shows to match. Superbitch come to Orlando this week as part of an East Coast tour with Warm Frames (Saturday, June 1, Uncle Lou’s, $10) and we checked in with lead screamer Talo about the tour and their copious Orlando connections. You, meanwhile, should check out Superbitch’s latest release, P.ee Tape.

You’re heading out on a big tour. How do you prepare?

Touring is my favorite way to travel! Being with friends, seeing new places, experiencing great music. I think everyone should be in a band and tour. I never really prepare. The day usually sneaks up on you. All of the sudden it’s time to leave and get in the van. I usually pack the day before or day of and go. It’s great.

The tour will be with Orlando’s Warm Frames, who you’ve played many shows with … Warm Frames and us became homies over Instagram, I believe. We mutually loved each other’s bands. Then they came out to our show at Banana Records in St. Pete and we chatted all night and naturally became friends. We’ve been playing shows together and supporting one another ever since. Can’t keep them away. Kidding! Love those gremlins.

Superbitch just did some recording in Orlando at Radio Information Services?

Song” is a nice return of the Potatoes’ blend of 1960s-inspired jangle-pop melodies and Rising’s pleasing voice. But this unexpected song is a little gem unto itself. While the rest of the Potatoes’ old catalog tended to swathe their sweetness in garage rags, “Obligatory Reunion Song” leans

It’s an enduring underground subculture that’ll be ready and primed for The Woggles, the Georgia cult legends whose run of carrying the garage-rock torch goes back even further, to the 1980s. Rounding out the bill perfectly will be the ringing melodies of fellow 1960s revivalists The BellTowers. (8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, Will’s Pub, $15-$20) baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com

Recording with John [Rousseau, RIS] is always an unpredictable adventure in the best way possible. We actually just got done recording our split with Warm Frames. We did that with John. It was so much fun being stuck in a room recording with all those goobers. Lots of giggles and cigarettes. John’s great at targeting the exact sound you’re trying to get across.

Black Kray

Virginia emo-rap maestro and head of the Goth Money collective Black Kray brings his “When Doves Kry” tour to the storied stage of the Beacham, and we suspect legions of black-clad kids will be there to get bleary with him. The MC is an enigma in a music industry awash in oversharing because he’s too busy doing it all — producer, rapper, label head, filmmaker. Kray’s music is just as cryptic: eldritch, eerie and distorted production over which he whispers, menaces and rhymes his way through nightmares. Kray’s influence has been vast — through his own work and collabs with the likes of Bladee and Yung Lean — with fans eagerly snapping up his over 40-deep album and mixtape discography under both his name and a maze of pseudonyms. If you want to hear something recent, check his sinister appearance on Bladee’s Cold Visions mixtape or the “Antidote” collab with Slitt Mook. If you want to see one of the most mysterious new players in the rap game, say Bloody Mary three times and step into the Beacham. 8 p.m., The Beacham, 46 N. Orange Ave., foundation-presents.com, $25-$35. — Matthew Moyer

Kane Brown

Five-time AMA award-winner and multi-platinum artist Kane Brown returns to the Kia Center on Thursday with touring openers Tyler Hubbard and Parmalee for the In the Air tour. The popular country music artist, who mixes pop and R&B into his tales of love and heartbreak, started captivating ears in 2015 with debut single “Used to Love You Sober,” which gained popularity on YouTube. The next year, Brown released his self-titled debut album, complete with hit songs “What Ifs” and “Heaven.” Fast-forward to this year and Brown has recently released collab song “Miles on It” with Marshmallow, the first single to hit the top five of both Hot Dance/Electronic charts on Billboard. Tyler Hubbard, best known as half of the multi-platinum pair Florida Georgia Line with Brian Kelley, steps out solo as tour support for these shows. Parmalee, meanwhile, is a group consisting of the Thomas brothers, Matt and Scott, joined by cousin Barry Knox. This group has had several chart-toppers including “Carolina,” the Blanco Brown collab “Just the Way” and “Take My Name.” 6 p.m., Orlando Kia Center, 400 W. FRIDAY, MAY 31

Tom and Dan’s 10-Year Anniversary Show

Tom Vann and Daniel Dennis are getting corporate in Sanford this week, to celebrate 10 years of being back on the air here in the City Beautiful. After being unceremoniously fired from Real Radio 104.1 FM, the duo took matters into their own hands and started their podcast “A Mediocre Time With Tom and Dan” in 2009. The duo mixed interviews with relentless self-deprecation, goofball humor and faux manly theatrics, and the show became a bit of a local sensation. Eventually things even came full circle as offshoot radio version, “A Corporate Time With Tom and Dan,” began broadcasting on Real Radio 10 years ago. Opening sets from comedians Vince Taylor, Ken Miller and Ross McCoy bring the post-workday laughs, then Tom and Dan do a live recording of “A Corporate Time” from the Ritz stage, airing on the same station that originally gave them the boot (which has to provide some grim satisfaction). Tom and Dan will also be gifting all attendees a special gift as a token of appreciation for their support, including a free drink ticket good for the afterparty at Tuffy’s. 6 p.m., Ritz Theater, Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, 201 S. John James Audubon & Mark Messersmith exhibitions

The Mennello Museum of American Art opens two intriguing exhibitions on Friday. Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America presents work by the legendary wildlife artist John James Audubon. After publishing his iconic Birds of America — “the archetype of wildlife illustration” — in the 1840s, Audubon’s second act was to gorgeously render a score of the quadrupeds (any animal that has four legs) of our continent. This exhibition includes 36 hand-printed drawings of wildlife ranging from rabbits to large cats that Audubon created with his son John Woodhouse Audubon, that were then hand-colored by J.T. Bowen. The second exhibition is Long Summer, a series of landscape paintings by Floridian nature artist Mark Messersmith. Along with his own work, Messersmith has been a professor at Florida

State University since 1985, mentoring successive generations of young artists. Messersmith creates story-telling scenes on canvas that portray the beautiful, mysterious, harsh and oft-melancholy sides of Florida’s natural beauty. Both exhibitions run through Sept. 8. Mennello Museum of American Art, 900 E. Princeton St., mennellomuseum.org, free-$5. — SL

Considering Matthew Shepard

Orlando Sings presents Considering Matthew Shepard on Saturday and Sunday, performed by the group’s choral ensemble, Solaria. Considering, composed by Craig Hella Johnson, is a Grammy-nominated oratorio that is a musical meditation on the murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998. Shepard, a 21-year old gay student at the University of Wyoming, was kidnapped, brutalized, and hung on a fence, left to succumb to his injuries. Shepard’s killing would become one of America’s most infamous anti-gay hate crimes, more than a decade

later leading to the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Through music and verse, Considering Matthew Shepard amplifies the irrefutable truth that there is so much more to Shepard’s life and legacy than just his death. This year Orlando Sings tackles a wide range of challenging and thoughtprovoking works, and Considering Matthew Shepard is no different. With DeSantis outlawing cities from flying Pride flags in the state, it might just be more timely than ever. [ free will astrology ]

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): All of us periodically enjoy phases I call “Freedom from Cosmic Compulsion.” During these times, the Fates have a reduced power to shape our destinies. Our willpower has more spaciousness to work with. Our intentions get less resistance from karmic pressures that at other times might narrow our options. As I meditated on you, dear Gemini, I realized you are now in a phase of Freedom from Cosmic Compulsion. I also saw that you will have more of these phases than anyone else during the next 11 months. It might be time for you to get a “LIBERATION” tattoo or an equivalent new accessory.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Here are four bold predictions. No. 1: Whatever treasure you have lost or are losing will ultimately be reborn in a beautiful form. No. 2: Any purposeful surrender you make will hone your understanding of exactly what your soul needs next to thrive. No. 3: A helpful influence may fade away, but its disappearance will clear the path for new helpful influences that serve your future in ways you can’t imagine yet. No. 4: Wandering around without a precise sense of where you’re going will arouse a robust new understanding of what home means to you.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Denmark’s King Canute IV (1042–1086) wasn’t bashful about asserting his power. He claimed ownership of all the land. He insisted on the right to inherit the possessions of all foreigners and people without families. Goods from shipwrecks were automatically his property. But once, his e orts to extend his authority failed. He had his servants move his throne to a beach as the tide came in. Seated and facing the North Sea, he commanded, “Halt your advance!” The surf did not obey. “You must surrender to my superior will!” he exclaimed, but the waters did not recede. Soon, his throne was engulfed by water. Humbled, Canute departed. I bring this up not to discourage you, Leo. I believe you can and should expand your influence and clout in the coming weeks. Just be sure you know when to stop.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Virgo-born Irène Joliot-Curie craved more attention than she got from her mother, Marie Curie. Mom was zealously devoted to her career as a chemist and physicist, which is one reason why she won Nobel Prizes in both fields. But she didn’t spend su cient time with her daughter. Fortunately, Irène’s grandfather Eugène became his granddaughter’s best friend and teacher. With his encouragement, she grew into a formidable scientist and eventually won a Nobel Prize in chemistry herself. Even if you’re not a kid, Virgo, I suspect there may be a mentor and guide akin to Eugène in your future. Go looking! To expedite the process,

define what activity or skill you want help in developing.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): I have a fantasy that sometime in the coming months, you will slip away to a sanctuary in a pastoral paradise. There you will enjoy long hikes and immerse yourself in healing music and savor books you’ve been wanting to read. Maybe you will write your memoirs or compose deep messages to dear old friends. Here’s the title of what I hope will be a future chapter of your life story: “A Thrillingly Relaxing Getaway.” Have you been envisioning an adventure like this, Libra? Or is your imagination more inclined to yearn for a trip to an exciting city where you will exult in high culture? I like that alternative, too. Maybe you will consider doing both.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): An Instagrammer named sketchesbyboze advises us, “Re-enchant your life by making the mundane exciting. You are not ‘going to the drugstore.’ You are visiting the apothecary to buy potions. You are not ‘running an errand.’ You are undertaking an unpredictable adventure. You are not ‘feeding the birds.’ You are making an alliance with the crow queen.” I endorse this counsel for your use, Scorpio. You now have the right and duty to infuse your daily rhythm with magic and fantasy. To attract life’s best blessings, you should be epic and majestic. Treat your life as a mythic quest.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): I invite you to invite new muses into your life in the coming months. Give them auditions. Interview them. Figure out which are most likely to boost your creativity, stimulate your imagination and rouse your inspiration in every area of your life, not just your art form. Tell them you’re ready to deal with unpredictable departures from the routine as long as these alternate paths lead to rich teachings. And what form might these muses take? Could be actual humans. Could be animals or spirits. Might be ancestral voices, exciting teachings or pilgrimages to sacred sanctuaries. Expand your concept of what a muse might be so you can get as much muselike input as possible.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The Japanese have a word for a problem that plagues other countries as well as theirs: karoshi, or death from working too hard and too much. No matter how high-minded our motivations might be, no matter how interesting our jobs are, most of us cannot safely devote long hours to intense labor week after week, month after month. It’s too stressful on the mind and body. I will ask you to monitor yourself for such proclivities in the coming months. You can accomplish wonders as long as you work

diligently but don’t overwork. (PS: You might not literally expire if you relentlessly push yourself with nonstop hard exertion, but you will risk compromising your mental health. So don’t do it!)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Typically, human fertility is strongest when the temperature is 64 degrees Fahrenheit. But I suspect you will be an exception to the rule in the coming months. Whether it’s 10 below or 90 in the shade, your fertility will be extra robust — literally as well as psychologically and spiritually. If you are a heterosexual who would rather make great art or business than new babies, be very attentive to your birth control measures. No matter what your gender or sexual preference is, I advise you to formulate very clear intentions about how you want to direct all that lush fecundity. Identify which creative outlets are most likely to serve your long-term health and happiness.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Here’s a key assignment in the coming months: Enjoy fantasizing about your dream home. Imagine the comfortable sanctuary that would inspire you to feel utterly at home in your body, your life and the world. Even if you can’t a ord to buy this ultimate haven, you will benefit from visualizing it. As you do, your subconscious mind will suggest ways you can enhance your security and stability. You may also attract influences and resources that will eventually help you live in your dream home.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Welcome to the future of your education, Aries! Here are actions you can take to ensure you are exposed to all the lush lessons you need and deserve in the coming months. No. 1: Identify three subjects you would be excited to learn more about. No. 2: Shed dogmas and fixed theories that interfere with your receptivity to new information. No. 3: Vow to be alert for new guides or mentors. No. 4: Formulate a threeyear plan to get the training and teachings you need most. No. 5: Be avidly curious.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Poet Emily Dickinson was skillful at invoking and managing deep feelings. One scholar described her emotions as being profoundly erotic, outlandish, sensuous, flagrant and nuanced. Another scholar said she needed and sought regular doses of ecstasy. Yet even she, maestro of passions, got overwhelmed. In one poem, she wondered “Why Floods be served to us in Bowls?” I suspect you may be having a similar experience, Taurus. It’s fun, though sometimes a bit too much. The good news is that metaphorically speaking, you will soon be in possession of a voluminous new bowl that can accommodate the floods.

Meet Drogon!

Fitting to his name, Drogon (A541798) is big, strong and a little hard to control. It’s clear he’s had very little training or socialization, because though he wants to play and be affectionate, he just winds up knocking everyone down. Drogon will fly into your arms without warning, he will head-butt you unintentionally while trying to steal kisses, he will run into your legs if you try and run with him. He doesn’t mean to be a klutz; he just is. Our vets put him at about 2 years old, but he definitely gives off younger puppy vibes — 70-pound heavy, muscular puppy.

Drogon has been out of the shelter three times now, adopted and returned for reasons that have nothing to do with him or his behavior. He is a good dog, but he will need a special adopter: someone strong, patient, and most importantly, active. Drogon needs exercise; he needs to play and run. He gets easily frustrated and he can be a lot of dog to control. Drogon seems to like other dogs, but he is so intrusive and powerful that he scares them all away. He can be calm, sweet and very affectionate, but only after he has been worn out and has had his fill of play time and treats. When tired, Drogon is as gentle as a kitten.

Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. every day except Wednesday, when it’s open 2-6 p.m. For more information, please call 407-836-3111 or visit ocnetpets.com.
