Issue 28, Thursday 9 September 2021
Eumundi Voice is celebrating the first anniversary of its community magazine. We are very proud that so many people have worked together largely as volunteers to make this innovative publication successful, with 5,000 full-colour issues published and delivered to households and enterprises every fortnight in addition to online.
Eumundi Rotary Initiatives Ltd created Eumundi Voice a little apprehensively as a community service to bridge the gap in community connection following the demise of a variety of treasured newspapers and magazines early last year, and as Covid changed daily life for many in Eumundi and surrounds. Bask and Coolican & Company open at the Old Bakery Friends and family of Jack and Jess were offered a glimpse into what will soon be available to locals at their joint venture in the Old Bakery building at 101 Memorial Dr.
Their focus is on supporting local producers and they will open 5-9pm Tuesday-Saturday.
They have transformed the site into an elegant and inviting space combining Coolican & Company – Jess’s interior design business which operates from a beautiful space at the back – and Bask, Jack’s restaurant which overflows onto the spacious deck area.
Owner-operators Alex and Penny moved north from Sydney to Nambour five years ago and have been working at a popular Noosa restaurant. Now they have taken the step to work closer to home and look forward to welcoming Eumundi and surrounding locals to their new business which is fully licensed and BYO. Bookings and enquiries: Penny 0460 302 786.
Tasteful plants and lighting have transformed the space and they recently hosted their first function, a wedding, on the first day of spring. Saturday lunches are planned and as the weather warms, Friday finger food and drinks will be offered on the deck. Expect culinary delights with locally-sourced ingredients to suit all tastes.

On Friday 8 October Eumundi’s CWA hall will be filled with the high energy classes of Universal Taekwon-Do. Mr Gerard Kelly has a 6th dan black belt and is a fully certified international instructor/examiner and has decided that Eumundi is the perfect location for his latest classes. Mr Kelly has been passionately involved in martial arts for over 44 years. “I have devoted myself to training in martial arts for most of my life,” he said. “Giving back to the community and empowering people to have greater selfconfidence and the ability to defend themselves is so very rewarding.” Mr Kelly has travelled the world thanks to Taekwon-Do and has represented Australia four times at world championship level. “My classes are fun, diverse and energetic. I truly love what I do and I love seeing my students develop.” Universal Taekwon-Do is a truly family affair with Mr Kelly’s wife Hayley Kelly – 1st degree black belt – assisting classes along with their two children. a scent that males in the area hone in on. The male had also found his way in but I managed to get both of them out and into the bush. Once the female becomes gravid (pregnant), she stops ovulating, the scent stops and males will stop looking for her. This time of year I get a lot of calls where you will often see more than one snake. Just yesterday I was called out to remove one python from a shed but found two. For the breeding season this will be standard so keep a lookout. Luke Huntley 0499 920 290.
Look out – it’s snake-breeding season From now until November it is snake breeding season where male snakes travel great distances to find females, often arriving at the same time and fighting over a female for the right to mate. The males will entwine around each other, twisting and thrashing, trying to knock the other’s head down. Fighting is fast and can look violent. Their heads are up off the ground and they can often be out in the open. Conversely, the snakes’ mating ritual is slow and gentle as they lie next to each other, often in a sheltered spot with their heads down on the ground. I get a lot of calls for noises of banging and thumping in the roof in breeding season. Recently I was called to find out what the sliding sound coming from inside a resident’s AC unit was. It could only mean – snake! I took the unit off the wall and found not one, but two brown tree snakes which are mildly venomous and nocturnal. It is breeding season and the female snake found her way in through a gap. The female was ovulating which means she puts out

Community Fallen Police Dog honoured Sunshine Coast Artist Fiona Groom recently completed a portrait of PD Rambo, a police dog tragically killed in the line Rambo (Fiona Groom) of duty in Maryborough in June. Fiona was asked to create the portrait as a surprise gift for Rambo’s handler who was extremely grateful and said: “This portrait has captured his eyes and head beautifully”.
Young local army veteran Laurie and his support dog Buddy have been together for two-anda-half years. “Buddy is my best friend. He goes everywhere with me, even when playing two-up on Anzac Day. He has changed my life in ways I never thought possible,” said Laurie. “Unfortunately we can’t train dogs quickly enough to keep up with demand,” said PTSD Dogs Australia founder Angie Weeks. “We need help from dog lovers in the community to foster more young dogs and get the training process started.” Visit www.ptsddogs.org.au/foster/ for details on how you can assist as a volunteer foster educator and help save two lives – a rescue dog and a veteran or first-responder. Native wildlife
Foster dogs for Diggers Many military personnel and first-responders including ambulance, fire and police endure Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after experiencing traumatic events that create changes in their brain chemistry and structure. Member for Ninderry and former Qld policeman Dan Purdie is asking locals to help foster PTSDsupport dogs during their training. “PTSD sufferers find relief and support through the company of trained assistance dogs,” said Dan.
Council will continue its program to protect native wildlife by preventing and controlling declared feral animals. The feral animal prevention and control program targets specific declared species such as wild dogs, goats, cats, deer, foxes, rabbits and Indian Myna birds. Council receives almost 700 requests for assistance with feral animal control annually. Feral animals damage agricultural and horticultural crops, irrigation and fences. They compete with livestock for pasture and supplementary feed, attack livestock, domestic pets and native animals, damage trees and native regeneration, disperse weed seeds and cause erosion.

Thanks again to members of the community for emailing general questions. I will always try to answer what I can and provide a police response. During August Eumundi police attended 49 calls for service or emergencies with 17 of them occurring in the last week. Four search warrants were executed and related to drug production and supply which resulted in charges for nine drug offences. Police also seized a small quantity of drugs at a two-car head-on collision accident on EumundiNoosa Road wherein the driver at fault drove on the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming vehicle. Luckily no-one was hurt but blood was taken from the driver after methylamphetamines were located in his vehicle and in his pockets. Eumundi police also arrested a 31yo female from Cooroy for assaulting an ambulance officer in Eumundi who was performing his duty at
the time. For her own safety, this offender was transported to hospital by police with a .362% alcohol reading. She was later charged with offences. Investigations are still pending within Eumundi regarding an undetermined cause of a fire, six stealing offences, and break-and-enter offences at Crescent Rd, Memorial Dr and Low St Eumundi and Arbour Pl Doonan. August drink driver offences were higher than normal with four persons caught with a 22yo male recording a alcohol concentrate of .158%. There were also four persons charged with disqualified driving within Eumundi Police division. The Road Policing unit / Traffic officers recorded 33 traffic infringement notices for the month of August for speeding and hoon-related offences. Eumundi Police Station has recorded 112 arrests this year from January to August with a total of 208 charges for offences committed. Unfortunately this figure has already eclipsed the yearly total for 2020. The increase in police

Eumundi streetscape project
Example only of potential footpath dining, additional street trees, and pedestrian crossing in Memorial Dr
Concept design for Memorial Dr on-track for October release Next month is an exciting milestone in the development of the Memorial Dr streetscape project, with The SCC PlaceMaking team to release to Eumundi residents the concept design based on community feedback and input to date. At that time the PlaceMaking team will seek additional feedback asking the community, “Have we got it right?”. Ideas will be subject to a further round community and business feedback, and research into technical feasibility and budget considerations. During Stage One – Have Your Say – that took place in late 2020, as well as the community design workshop that took place in May 2021, seven community responses were acknowledged: 1. Use tree planting and creative elements to ensure town entrance statements at key arrival points.
2. Place two well-located pedestrian crossings at either end of Memorial Dr to make it easier to cross as well as to slow traffic. 3. Provide artistic and safety lighting throughout the street. 4. Investigate a pedestrian link through Lonergan Lane connecting Memorial Dr and Napier Rd to better connect the town and provide attractive, practical, safe access to additional parking areas. 5. Create additional areas for landscaping, street trees, seating and some additional outdoor dining in front of shop areas. 6. Celebrate the Memorial Avenue of fig trees. 7. Improve footpath clutter and ground surfaces. Recently the SCC PlaceMaking team undertook an additional online survey to better understand business needs relating to car parking, loading

Example only of potential footpath dining, additional street trees, and pedestrian crossing in Memorial Dr zones and additional footpath dining spaces and to inform further development of the streetscape design. Feedback received from 12 business respondents is that, overall, current on-street car parking is working well for some businesses but not others. Key issues relating to parking in Memorial Dr include lack of clear parking signage or parking durations that don’t match customer needs, including 15-minute carparking in key zones. Other issues include awareness of the availability of off-street carparking areas, peak demand during certain times on market days, and general pedestrian access to parking. Current loading and servicing zones are said to work well for businesses.

There is general support for investigating further footpath dining areas within the streetscape. SCC will commence a detailed signage review and see what can be improved now, as well as identify improvements that could be made as

Eumundi park turns over a new green leaf Allan Templeton Park in front of Eumundi’s Sunny Brae and showgrounds honours the late Mr Templeton, Eumundi councillor from 1970 to 1988. It recently received an upgrade providing a fresh, new look for visitors and locals. SCC Div 10 Cr David Law said he was glad to see the ageing steel and timber shelter replaced. “The shelter was well past its use-by date and we have also removed the shelter furniture, a dead tree, decaying timber bollards and the

associated water tank,” Cr Law said. “As the park name suggests, we have taken on former Maroochy Shire Councillor Allan Templeton’s green-thumb approach by increasing the grassed area where items were removed and planting new trees to help act as vehicle barriers. “I’ve been told it was Allan who put the ‘green’ into Eumundi by planting shrubs and gardens in many areas. Now the bustling town is bursting with shady nooks and green parks for generations to enjoy.”

will be documented and archived at: www. insideoutproject.net. A second showing of the Diver.city art project is scheduled for Eumundi on Sunday 10 October. Look for all the details in the next Eumundi Voice.
Celebrating cultural diversity D.I.V.E Theatre Collective recently organised a Group Action for the Inside Out Project – Diver. city – a global art project transforming messages of personal identity into works of art. Project leader Priscila Barreto Da Cunha challenged 50 local migrants to use black and white portraits to reveal and share their experiences of settling into life on the Sunshine Coast, while also being torn between two cultures and experiencing Covid restrictions. Their stories of challenge and joy were celebrated in a large portrait exhibition at Tickle Park Coolum Beach on Saturday 28 August, with residents and visitors surprised by a set of giant posters marching down Coolum Boardwalk. “Our aim is to hear the local voices for whom English is not their first language, raise awareness of the kaleidoscope of cultures that make up our society and create a portrait of the Sunshine Coast as a multicultural community,” said Priscila. “Whatever our cultural background, we shape our culture with acceptance and harmony. This group action connected local artists and people from different cultural backgrounds to celebrate cultural diversity and inspire contemporary cultural reflection.” The exhibition
Paint in the open air Painting outside in the changing light intrigues the Sunshine Coast Plein Air Painters (SCPAP). They walk in the footsteps of Monet and Renoir, who gave painting indoors the flick and frolicked with paintbrushes in the open air. SCPAP members meet weekly to paint and draw outside. There’s no tuition, only good company, and they exhibit in Yandina’s Historic House Art Gallery in September. Join their Facebook group to connect with a week-long Covid-safe SCPAP paint-out in different locations around the Sunshine Coast, 25-29 October. Yandina’s Ginger Factory will exhibit the works in a pop-up gallery 1-28 November. Contact Col Nation on 0408 966 500 or visit Sunshine Coast Plein Air Painters on Facebook.

Messages of the Earth art exhibition An exhibition at The J Gallery, in Noosa Junction titled Messages of the Earth features paintings by Belli Park artist and author Jhana Bowen. They are works from his illustrated book Rainbow
Turtle Golden Dolphin. The artworks were completed over four years and are particularly poignant as many are impacted by the ramifications of Covid. The artist suggests the paintings call for viewers to listen to their own nature, making peace with feelings and in doing so gaining some ‘gold’. Jhana’s exhibition will be held at The J until the end of September and he is also hosting a Visionary Art Retreat on 11 September at Belli Park’s Bellbunya Eco Retreat. Visit: www. jhanabowen.com.

Photo competition Congratulations to this issue’s winner Cecilia Becus with her photo of Warana beach. She took the photo on her iPhone S5. Cecilia said she got her phone wet taking the photo but it was well worth it and our judge agrees. The judge said that the image has captured the raw power of the sea with a good exposure and nice framing. The movement of the frozen waves captures the viewer’s attention. Email your photo to hello@EumundiVoice.com. au for Issue 29 by 15 September. The winner will receive a book voucher sponsored by Berkelouw Books and Templeton Ginger.

Detroit police in a clandestine brewery during the Prohibition era
Story of beer #2 The second sip Beer is old, really old. Egyptian papyri from 5000 BC provides the earliest written evidence of brewing and mentions dates and wild herbs. Beer’s ancient history is evident in 7,000-yearold pottery jars found in Iran which revealed beer-like residue and fermented malted barley. A 6,000-year-old Sumerian tablet shows people consuming a drink through reed straws from a communal bowl. A 3,900-year-old Sumerian poem honoured Ninkasi – the patron goddess of brewing – and contained a beer recipe using barley bread. Indigenous people worldwide independently developed beer-like drinks and air-borne wild yeasts can naturally ferment cereals containing sugar. Most countries had a ‘local brew’ as a part of daily life and beer was deemed nutritious and much safer than drinking water often

contaminated by human and animal waste. In Northern Europe, historical evidence shows widely-grown barley provided a basic ingredient for brewers. To vary the taste during the early Middle Ages, brewers combined herbs and spices with barley including tree bark, dried flowers and vegetable roots. Around 1150 AD, German monks introduced wild hops which extended the life of their beers and drinkers enjoyed the pleasing, thirst quenching bitterness. Most monasteries brewed beer and experimented with lagers, various flavours and storing beer in cold temperatures, with Belgian monasteries still ranked among the greatest breweries in the world. In Britain women were the main brewers, including Anne Hathaway who kept herself financial and busy without Will (Shakespeare). For hundreds of years pale ales, porters and stouts have been brewed and the British army issued

Sons of Temperance Hill End 1872. Public Domain daily beer rations to soldiers. Higher alcohol and extra hops were natural preservatives to survive long journeys across the world, hence ‘India Pale Ale’ arrived safely for troops in India and Burma. In USA history the Pilgrim Fathers were wellknown for their Puritan ways but landed at Plymouth Rock apparently because their beer ran out! An entry in the diary of a Mayflower passenger explains the unplanned landing, “We could not now take time for further search… our victuals being much spent, especially our beer”. Their first permanent building was a brewery and by 1810 New York City alone had 42 breweries. Immigrants from Germany and the Czech Republic demanded Pilsner-style lagers which are now predominant. The Puritan spirit revived again in USA history with the Prohibition era’s constitutional ban which made alcohol illegal and led to a massive trade in underground manufacturing from 19201933. During the Great Depression in 1929 many regional breweries vanished. Prohibition was an attempt by communities to end the moral and health problems of alcohol including alcoholism, family violence and political corruption. In Australia there was a similar Temperance Movement from the mid-1830s to attempt to encourage moderation in drinking. In the 1880s many hotels were converted to coffee palaces, but as Temperance lost steam, they were demolished or granted new liquor licences. It was only in 2017 that Melbourne’s last ‘dry’ area, Balwyn North, had its final compulsory poll to allow locals to decide if they wanted alcohol to be available in their area – unsurprisingly they said “Yes”!
Sunshine Coast beer lovers have cast their votes in Eumundi Brewery’s ‘Brewed By EU’ competition and the winning beer from 300 entrants was Black Cockatoo Smoked Lager, created by passionate home brewer Josh Batten of Peregian Springs. Head Brewer at Eumundi Brewery Chris Sheehan said the competition challenged people to develop the story and flavour combinations for a beer inspired by Eumundi and the Sunshine Coast. “The Black Cockatoo Smoked Lager will now be a limited release Eumundi brew and sold on tap at select pubs from this week,” Chris said. As the competition winner, Josh was presented with a cheque for $5,000 together with monthly beer supplies. In naming his beer Black Cockatoo Smoked Lager, Josh said he wanted to acknowledge the bird as a spectacle with its colour and proud stature. “My unique ingredients were peat smoked malt and cold brew coffee and I was inspired to create a beer that reflected the bushfires of 2019 and the rural fire brigade members who put their lives on the line to protect our community,” Josh said. “The crisp, clean body and hint of smokiness reminds us of the formidable beauty of our landscape.” Impressed with Josh’s acknowledgement of the ‘firies’, the team at Eumundi Brewery also announced a $5,000 donation to the Eumundi Rural Fire Service from The Eumundi Brewery Community Fund. This was established in 2016 to take a portion of Eumundi beer sales made throughout Australia for the benefit of Sunshine Coast community organisations.

were connected to larger areas of bushland or situated within a wildlife corridor.
Wildwise Environmental Services program
Most residential and rural property has a history of land clearing and/or logging. This history results in an absence of tree hollows and some key plant species such as Casuarina trees and Birdwing Butterfly vines (Pararistolochia). Some of these important habitat features can be supplemented by planting appropriate tube stock and installing nest boxes. In particular, larger nest boxes for cockatoos and owls could be considered if there are sufficiently large trees to support them. Large diameter hollows can take centuries to form.
The Eumundi Community Wildlife Monitoring and Awareness program has been completed, with a total of 21 properties in the Eumundi district assessed for habitat values by local ecologists, Alina Zwar and Kieran Aland, aided by motion-sensitive infrared cameras and desktop research. The primary aim was to research the connection of community with wildlife in their backyards and provide recommendations to further enhance habitat values. A broad mix of species were detected and it came as no surprise that the Brush Turkey was the most common. Many properties were also home to Brush-tail Possums and two species (Short-eared Brushtail and Common Brushtail) are present in the area. Swamp Wallabies and Eastern Grey Kangaroos were detected, as were some small surprises in the form of Melomys and Antechinus. Echidna, Noisy Pitta, Wonga Pigeon, Pale-vented Bush Hen and Rufous Fantail were also recorded by the cameras. During the period of this project, Glossy-black Cockatoos, Koala, Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, Masked Owl and Powerful Owl were also present in the Eumundi area. As mentioned in previous articles, residential properties that supported the most diversity of wildlife contained habitat features such as access to water (dams, creek lines, ponds), hollows (logs, hollow-bearing trees) and complex vegetation structure such as ground cover, shrubs and canopy. The situation of a property within the broader landscape context also seemed to be important. Properties with the best diversity 28
From the feedback received, property owners were delighted to see the camera images of wildlife on their ‘patch’ and interested to view the desktop mapping on regional ecosystems, koala habitats, and the potential occurrence of conservation-listed species within close proximity to their property. Most of the property owners who joined the project are passionate wildlife conservationists and keen to make improvements and enhance habitat values for wildlife. We would like to acknowledge and thank the Eumundi and District Community Association for supporting this project, and the community for nominating their properties and taking an active interest in the conservation of our local wildlife. New connections have been made between landowners, local wildlife and the landscapes in our care. Visit: www.wildwise.com. au. Alina Zwar & Kieran Aland
