From left, Div 10 Cr David Law, Julie Oliver, Joyce Turnbull, Pam Moffat, Ruth Hickey, Barbara Harvison, Eileen Walder, Greg Ison, Janet Millington, Wendy Birrell & Heidi Jenkins In June last year Rotary Club of Eumundi members accepted a service challenge to develop and publish a community magazine to try and close the gap formed by the demise of several valued local publications. On 13 August the first Eumundi Voice hit the streets. More than 70 locals joined the Eumundi Voice team at the Imperial Hotel on Saturday 11 September to celebrate the first-year anniversary of the magazine. Members of the writers’ group received certificates of appreciation for their

work on 28 issues and 1,000 articles! Div 10 Cr David Law presented the awards and commented on the popularity and high quality of the magazine. “We always read it at the council office and I have never once found a spelling error or typo – which is a tribute to the volunteers.” Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie thanked magazine editors Joyce Turnbull and Ruth Hickey and remarked that Eumundi Voice provided a much-valued local news service. News in brief

Eumundi Coffee Co.

Artists Kim Kirkman and Damien Campbell – part of the Live & Local Festival – entertained the crowd as Eumundi Coffee Co. in Memorial Dr unveiled their new courtyard space recently. The area has transformed into an inviting space providing extra seating, a stage for local artists, a small servery and a beautiful mural on the wall. It connects the Brew Bar and the Roastery, enhancing an already popular place to enjoy your daily coffee fix.

Noosa Council is encouraging people to report issues in their local area via the Smartphone app Snap Send Solve, which allows users to take a picture and send the problem to council. Each week has a special issue – dumped rubbish, graffiti, overgrown vegetation and abandoned shopping trolleys are the focus this month. If you report an issue you are entered into a $500 weekly prize competition. See https://bit. ly/3CuYDzR for the dates of each week’s focus.

than chilling in front of the stage as a punter. Fast forward a few years and I find myself lucky enough to bring the best live bands to our town in my role as music booker at the Imperial Hotel. I can’t believe I have a job this cool in a regional town as dynamic and beautiful as Eumundi. The idea of the festival was born around a table in 2019. Before we knew it, we were calling bands and locking-in playing times – the response was amazing. With 20 local bands, a full house and non-stop music in every space we could fill, Offbeat 2019 was a hit!

Eumundi is a home to ‘live music’ and we are surrounded by incredibly talented musicians, writers and performers. Playing music has been part of my daily life for as long as I can remember. I felt instantly at home when I arrived in Eumundi many years ago. Music was everywhere – at the markets, busking, in the pubs, or tickling the ivories on Betsy, the street piano. I have always felt more at home running around backstage at festivals as a worker rather

Fast forward to 2021 and we find ourselves in a very different world where we need to adapt and forge ahead to keep bringing live music to our town. The opportunity to bring this event out of the hotel and into Napier Rd Eumundi is one we would not have without the assistance of the federal government RISE (Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand) grant, and it is one we simply could not pass up. We are thrilled to have the privilege of delivering a festival for Eumundi that all locals can be proud of. I look forward to sharing festival updates with you along the way as we head towards 26–28 November and beyond. Visit: www. offbeatmusicfestival.com.au. Eumundi School of Rock concert Eumundi School of Rock’s 31 rockers were thrilled that their concert on 29 August went ahead at the Imperial Hotel despite the Horizon Festival’s Covid cancellation. This was due Sollz Teens band – Lacey Manwaring in no small part to rescue work by secretary Betzi, volunteers, supporters and sponsors, and the rockers’ families. The teenage band members of Sippy Cup and Sollz, aged 13-17, played professionally and inspired the younger rockers, aged 8-13. The Flammable Bandaids, The Elements and The Black Jacks were tremendous! The mega teacher band featuring Lochie Kapper, Niamh Stevens and Dexter Hurren played music by ARIA awardwinning legend Alex Lloyd.

With the school decorated with amazing artwork and excited performers at the ready, Eumundi State School’s annual Art Festival was a great success this year. The day began with students and parents watching a showcase of talent featuring the school band, glee club, choir and acts from selected classes. After morning tea everyone toured classrooms to view a wide range of paintings, drawings, pottery and work produced in the Raw Art workshops held this term. The finalists in ‘Eumundi’s Got Talent’ were enthusiastically cheered as they performed in front of a large crowd in the finale of this wonderful day.

productive, nor does the coffee chat run or water cooler banter.

Do I need to go to the office?

If you WFH exclusively or are part of a hybrid arrangement which combines at-the-office with WFH, there is a new version of being present: digital presenteeism. To prove they are ‘at work’, people are working longer than ever answering emails at all hours, obsessively checking the shared docs folder, and being seen to be on-theball and hyper-efficient and productive. Apps can log your keystrokes, summarise your visited websites and even watch you through the computer camera to check your time-on-task.

Monday to Friday in the office used to be the norm. Covid has accelerated a remote-work revolution made possible by faster internet speeds, Zoom meetings and cloud computing. Working from home even has its own name – WFH. The advantages are well known. There’s less time wasted commuting to and from work, with savings in fuel and wear-and-tear on vehicles. Having more flexible work hours makes it easier to accommodate family and personal commitments. Some people also find it easier to concentrate and feel more productive. Who would have thought it feasible that by just using a phone a team leader can manage IT employees in India, as witnessed recently at a dinner party! However, it seems a re-set is coming as more employers are calling for employees to physically turn-up to the office or work site. This also has its own name: presenteeism. Being present. Being seen. Generating assurances that you are actually working even though just sitting at your desk does not necessarily equate to being

If you work at a construction site or coffee shop, it is not an issue. You have to be there. But in a knowledge economy, being ‘present’ is a trickier issue. The promise of WFH is proving less of a sure thing – saving time by not travelling but spending it working longer hours to prove you are working hard. Learning to adjust to digital supervision could be another uncomfortable part of this culture of work metamorphosis. Ruth Hickey

Community groups Who’s using the CWA hall?

The landmark blue building in Memorial Dr was built in 1929, just two years after the establishment of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) in Eumundi. It has become a symbol of the role the CWA has played in Australia’s history and now is also open to the wider community as a place to meet, share and learn. So, who uses the heritage hall? Here we share a little of the passion and expertise of leaders of the wide-ranging groups. The CWA ladies use the hall most Tuesday mornings and one Tuesday night a month for craft activities and a general meeting. The Eumundi branch has a market stall on the hall porch most first and third Wednesdays of the month. Visitors are always welcome. Email: eumundiqcwa@gmail.com.

Councillor Div 9 - Cr Maria Suarez Verrierdale Rd, Verrierdale Do you travel along Verrierdale Rd, Verrierdale at any stage during your day? Please be aware that reconstruction of a 900m section of the road has begun and will take around eight weeks – weather permitting. The reconstruction involves a significant amount of work as council will be completely removing and replacing the road base and will need to close the road with redirections in place. The existing road and base will be removed one lane at a time. The subgrade will then be strengthened by lime stabilisation with the placement of cement fortified gravel to follow. Once this lane has been completed to a bitumen

seal standard, works will start on the opposite lane. The project team is keen to complete these works in a timely manner for the benefit of all drivers and they will do their best to work with the community during construction. I understand there will be some inconvenience for residents and businesses, however this upgrade really needs to be done and I thank you for your patience. If you are able to, I recommend using Eumundi-Noosa Rd and Emu Mountain Rd while the work takes place. If you have other issues or suggestions to discuss, please contact me on 07 5475 9810 or email: maria.suarez@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or come along to one of my community chats on the second Wednesday of each month. Hotel and brewery news The next chapter of Eumundi’s historic Joe’s Waterhole is about to begin with news of the sale

of the hotel to Good Drinks, owner of Gage Roads Brew Co. for its Matso brand. Joe’s was built in the 1890s and originally named the Commercial Hotel. In 1924 a fire swept through town and the pub was rebuilt in 1926, maintaining its iconic status ever since. Good Drinks plans to trade as Joe’s and redevelop the site as a Matso venue and brewery after summer. In other news, the family-owned operators behind the Sandstone Point and Eatons Hill Taverns recently won approval for a new hotel and cellar door development at Doonan.

completion of raised garden beds which will be available for locals to hire for their own use. In the coming months ECG will be constructing ‘The Hub’ – an undercover space which will be used for community events, workshops, education/training and presentations. ECG aims to provide a learning space and ongoing support for locals to design, establish and grow their own food-producing gardens. This space will be for community use to encourage people to get involved in gardening activities, especially those involving edible produce. ECG can help improve family nutrition, facilitate environmental sustainability, promote local health and fitness, provide gardening education and help create employment and work experience opportunities.

UN International Day of Older Persons Australians now live almost ten years longer than they did 50 years ago with current average life expectancy at 82.5 years. By 2030 more than one in five Australians will be over 65. In 1990 the United Nations designated 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons to celebrate the contributions of older persons to society. The 2021 theme is Digital Equity for All Ages, examining issues such as the safety and privacy of older persons in the digital world. Last year’s theme was focused on the higher risks to older persons from the global upheaval caused by Covid.

Director Liza Park has set this production in the 1950s with inspirational costumes by Margaret Courtney giving an interesting slant to the much-loved story. Higgins wagers with his friend Col Pickering (Jackson O’Sullivan) that he can transform a Cockney ‘guttersnipe’ into a high-class lady. Eliza, the daughter of a dustman, becomes his challenge.

Another Noosa Arts Theatre delight Pygmalion – the George Bernard Shaw play which inspired the musical My Fair Lady – comes to Noosa Arts Theatre next month. It will star husband and wife team Howard Tampling and Rachel Fentiman as Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle.

The cast also includes Sheila Oliver as Mrs Pearce, a role she played some 60 years ago in a school production. Returning after too long an absence is Rainee Skinner playing Mrs Higgins, with Yvie Somerville, Tom Middleton, Tara Long, Donald Grant and Frank Wilkie rounding off a wonderful cast. Pygmalion is bound to be another Noosa Arts sell-out, so early bookings are advisable. Performances are 7.30pm on 21-23 October with matinees 2pm on 16, 17, 23 and 24 October. Tickets $32 or $28 concession. A cut-price preview on 14 October is $23. Book online: www.noosaartstheatre.org,au or at the theatre box office, 163 Weyba Rd, Noosaville, phone 07 5449 9343.

Environment Alternatives to single-use plastic

Did you know 1 September was the start of the ban on the sale and supply of some singleuse plastics in Qld? This means no more plastic straws at KFC, no more throw-away plastic plates from Coles and no more plastic spoons with your take-away. By now you will be familiar with the bamboo spoon you receive with a coffee and many are using a refillable water bottle instead of throwing away a plastic one after one use. So, what are some alternatives? Here are some ideas to help you reduce your reliance on single-use plastics.

REUSABLE MESH BAGS Take your produce mesh bags to the shops to avoid the plastic bags at the retailer.

BEESWAX FOOD COVERS AND SILICON BOWL COVERS Keep produce, pre-prepared meals or leftovers fresh by covering your own bowls or jars with silicon multi-fit seals or beeswax fabric. Both can be easily washed in warm soapy water. 26

TRAVEL KIT When travelling we are most likely to use plastics and throw them away. Take a travelling kit which includes knife, fork, spoon, plate, coffee mug, chopsticks, steel straw, water bottle and container. If travelling with the family, equip the traditional picnic basket.

BANANA LEAF PLATES Many cultures use banana leaves to serve food as they are flat, nontoxic and compost. Grow your own plates and save on washing-up.

PAPER BALLOONS Instead of blow-up balloons, use paper honeycomb tissue balloons which fold open from flat, are reusable and easy to store. Both helium (foil coated) and natural or synthetic latex balloons, if released, cause litter and can harm animals. Visit: www.balloonsblow. org.

LOW-PLASTIC FOOD WRAP It may seem that you just can’t do without the clingwrap, but you can at least reduce the amount of plastic you are using. Some brands of wrap claim to be 45% renewable sugarcane-based material. Better still, why not store food in glass containers with a lid...these last for years.

NON-PLASTIC STRAWS Straws from sugarcane or bamboo pulp are appearing in coffee shops. Or grab your own straw out of your bag – metal straw kits may come with a handy cleaner brush in a neat cardboard tube.

NON-PLASTIC PLATES, BOWLS AND CUPS Supermarkets have cups, bowls, plates and straws made from sugarcane, bamboo and paper. The plastic wrapping should be recycled with the ‘scrunch-able’ plastic you return to your supermarket for recycling.

Last week, Parliament passed landmark legislation to introduce voluntary assisted dying in Queensland. In the lead up to this debate, I surveyed the electorate and consulted widely before making a decision whether or not to support the legislation. It was not an easy decision to make, and for those interested, I’ve outlined the main reasons I was unable to support the legislation in its current form. An AMA survey of some 1,250 doctors revealed 98% believed they should be able to offer palliative care options before VAD yet Queenslanders will have access to VAD nine months before they can access palliative care. While the concept of VAD was generally supported in the survey I conducted, 100 per cent of respondents wanted improvements and better access to palliative care. As always, the details of the bill are what we as parliamentarians must ultimately vote on. It is as much as what is left out, as what’s left in. We do not vote on a motion; we must vote on whether the bill will operationally protect Queenslanders from harm and protect their human rights. I shared the Premier’s concerns around the ability for faith based institutions with a conscientious objection and I supported amendments moved by the member for Toowoomba South. These sensible amendments would have closed definitional gaps, required specialist medical involvement, prohibited coercion, secured conscientious objection and enhanced reporting measures, including annual reporting on palliative care spending. Queenslanders deserve the best legislation possible and these amendments would have improved safeguards and generally enhanced the bill. People should have a right to choose. Currently, particularly in areas outside Brisbane like my electorate, there is no legitimate choice as palliative care is often not an easily accessible option. I don’t believe that this is the best possible legislation available and therefore, I could not support it.

Out and about

Classic cars, caffeine, cruising & conversation Definitely not a club just for petrol heads, Noosa Beach Classic Car Club continues to grow its membership. The club embraces frequent social outings to local and Hinterland destinations that are conducive to relaxing with like-minded enthusiasts.

Noosa Country Show Enjoying beautiful weather the crowds poured into a jammed-packed weekend of activities at the Pomona Showgrounds for the annual Noosa Country Show. A full program included equestrian events, cooking and quilting sections, beautiful flowers, prize-worthy cows and wood chopping. Entertainment was a monster truck and night rodeo, reptiles and dinosaurs, and the perennial favourite of side-show-alley stalls and rides.

Gathering at the club shed for a caffeine fix and conversation prior to a drive is a great casual setting to catch-up with fellow members. Once on the road, enjoy a well-planned drive through our scenic Noosa Hinterland via back lanes to hidden gems such as a country pub, or off-thebeaten-track café/restaurant. Most recently the club visited Black Ant Gourmet at Kin Kin General Store – a lovely country drive. Motor museum visits, auto workshop tours, there is something for everyone and membership is open to owners of cars that are ‘treasured’ – a true definition of ‘classic’!
