More than a walk in the park!
Cooroy Future Group Inc., Noosa & District Landcare Group and Skilling Queenslanders for Work teams planted 2,000 trees The Great Noosa Country Trail Walk is certainly no walk in the park. This year’s event from 2-4 October attracted 200 walkers who covered a challenging 56 kilometres over three days and camped overnight at Kin Kin and Cooran. Recently renamed the Noosa Biosphere Trail the concept originated in 2013 with Shaun Walsh – a local with good connections in Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin. He wanted to, “Give the trail network a quality event involving the locals, keep the profile high and ensure the trail network is
never lost to these communities”. Walkers registered at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre and loaded their camping gear into a truck supplied by the Rotary Club of Eumundi. The club also provided an energy boost with a BBQ breakfast on the first day. A dedicated team of 16 volunteer guides were on the trail to support the walkers and everyone played a part to ensure this was a zero waste event. Cooroy Future Goup Inc. Cont. from p1 and Vice President Jim Ennis explained this year had particular significance as the group used profits from the 2020 walk to purchase 2,000 local and endemic plants from Noosa & District Landcare Group. Field crews planted the trees with help from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work team. The trees provide shade for the trail and a much needed wildlife corridor. Cooroy Future Group Inc. acknowledges the support of Noosa Council and the fantastic assistance provided by many community groups in creating another memorable three-day experience that showcases the natural beauty of the Noosa Hinterland.

Community Eumundi Agricultural Show
Supreme Led Breed: The Berry family’s thoroughbred mare Octavia There is nothing quite like seeing the bond between humans and horses and the recent Agricultural Show at Eumundi Showground on Black Stump Rd was a celebration of the skills of both riders and horses. Organised by the Eumundi Park Recreational and Showground Association Inc., championship sections included Led and Ridden horses for Open and Hunter Hacks, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Riders and many breed classes. Show organisers recognised the generous support of sponsors including Craig Porter and Shari Baldwin from PB Show Horses, Sharyn McKell from Jarendan Stock Horses, Sarah and Clint from Sanden Equestrian, Pyman-Mellor Pastoral, Suellen Brook, Katie Brandon, The Handsome Horse, Café 2U and Brainfit. Their sponsorship consisted of cash, rugs, garlands and vouchers. Thanks also to judges Rachel Hayse, Ainslie Davies and Alanah Ladbrook.
Recently we had 16 riders on a three-hour ride with opportunities to trot and canter. As the park is quite large we didn’t come across other users but we’re a very social group and we will stop for a chat and give the horses a rest and/ or a drink. The club would like to thank park rangers for the works carried out to maintain the riding tracks which are in excellent condition. We found the parking at the Eumundi end of the park a bit limited for a dozen floats so we hope council will include additional float parking in the old dump reserve when it is redeveloped. Offbeat Festival update It has been great to enjoy some rain recently and the Offbeat Festival site is looking green and lush! We have been so lucky to work alongside ECCO which has generously lent us the land for the festival on Saturday 27 November. Offbeat Festival will take place in what is known to locals as the ‘bottom carpark’ at 35 Napier Rd, across the road from the markets and amphitheatre. It is a beautiful, open, green space and we can’t wait to fill it with music. We will fence off a section and bring in stages, bands, fencing, lights, bars, food stalls and more! A huge thank you to ECCO for working with us to make this happen and to the volunteers who will be working hard to make everything run smoothly. I have been chatting with our headline band Holy Holy who absolutely cannot wait to play in Eumundi. We also have some exciting news to announce soon that will see even more live music in our town both in the lead-up to the festival and over Offbeat Festival weekend itself which will run from 26-28 November. Parks and gardens Ida Duncan’s botanic vision In the late 1970s Ida and Jim Duncan bought acreage adjoining Lake Macdonald at 6 Mile Creek Dam, however in 1980 when the dam wall was raised the water cut off the Duncan’s original access. In response they built a causeway but much of the nearby land – which had been mined for soil and rocks for the dam wall – was fast becoming a dump for building materials and old whitegoods. Tired of having a dumping ground at her front 8
gate, in 1987 Ida began to petition Noosa Council to allow her to clear the land with a view to creating a botanic garden. Part of her vision included an amphitheatre. Such were her persuasive talents that PGH Holdings – then located on Macdonald Dr which is now the site of the Wimmers factory – donated the bricks for the amphitheatre. With previous experience in this kind of work in Victoria, Ida and Jim were ready to take on what would be a mammoth task. Then-mayor Bert Wansley described Mrs Duncan as a “serial pest” following her relentless hounding of council to approve her proposed project, but her efforts paid off and the local community came together to clear the site and take all the unwanted junk to the tip.
The project began in 1987 and the first stage took nine months. A federal grant funded the hard and soft landscaping. When completed, two employees were given full-time work to maintain the eight-hectare masterpiece which helped to make the ‘dam’ much more of a ‘lake’. In August 1990 a celebration in Cooroy marked the opening of what we now call Noosa Botanic Gardens. Ida Duncan will forever be remembered as the powerful, persistent and visionary woman who convinced Noosa Council that her vision would create a truly magical place, which everyone would agree has been achieved in masterly fashion. Today the gardens and amphitheatre are visited by thousands of people to enjoy the seasonal plant, bird and insect life and enjoy a special place of tranquillity and peace. Jill Brownlee

Peregian fires Part 1
SMS call out issued by FireComm for Verrierdale RFS to respond
Looking back to September 2019 Some moments just stay with you. One is from September 2019 when I watched black ash lightly falling on my verandah in Eumundi and felt the hot wind coming up the valley. I could imagine the fire storming up through the densely-forested areas between my town and the coast. How far away was it? Would the fire be controlled? All I could do was hope that the winds would turn and drive the fire back. I think more than a few folk were angered when they read: “Teens charged over 2019 blaze. The fresh fires were sparked just over a kilometre from where two teenagers are accused of lighting the devastating 2019 bushfire. A 14-year-old Peregian Springs boy and a 15-yearold Coolum Beach girl have been charged with endangering particular property by fire.” ABC 8 September. If you weren’t there, and wonder if you should make an emergency plan, Google Peregian Springs’ fires for a selection of horrific images from a range of news sources. See ABC news archive at: https://ab.co/3l7eoY2. Ruth Hickey
As it happened for the Rural Fire Service “Two years and we forget – complacency ever our weakness and our enemy.” Thinking back the Peregian fire did not require any augury. There had been a number of wild fires of lesser but still significant intensity so perhaps only the location was a surprise. The Triangle of Fire is heat, oxygen and fuel. All were there in abundance, just requiring an initial 14
ignition. That happened somewhere around Peregian Springs and Havana Rd. I was called out with Verrierdale Rural Fire Service (RFS). The Springs is in their area of bush and the fire spread with stunning speed. Qld Fire was alerted to the danger and quickly summoned urban, auxiliary and rural units from all around the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. Two of us in a light attack vehicle (Hilux with a water tank and pump) were sent directly along Emu Mountain Rd towards Coolum. There were so many cars driving the other way escaping and the fire seemed to be everywhere. We were stopped by an urban fire vehicle and crew as there was a big tree in flames. The urban officer said, “Nothing you can do about that. See if you can get through to the school (Coolum State High School) and report the situation”. The radio was alive with reports of fire from everywhere. We got a report from, I think, a school administration staffer that the building was empty – information which we passed on to fire control. We spent the evening and much of the night on a fire line waiting for the fire to approach the school through the bush. Eventually it did. Various RFS groups manned the area around Peregian Springs and Peregian Beach and fought the approaching fire. Fortunately the wind was favourable and the line of fire travelled north, parallel to Peregian Beach. Many groups worked to protect property with noteworthy success. Most of us had moments of drama and all of us were awed by the extent and speed of the flames. Our task was to contain the fire so lines of containment were set up to prevent the spread, spotting and extinguishing flying embers. Rural fire vehicles have water to cool the fire and take heat away from the Triangle of Fire. At the school there were hydrants we were able to use to provide a lot of water. We could hear the water bombing aircraft. What an asset! What a job! What an achievement! We did not realise how hungry we were, so were very grateful to all the volunteer supporters who provided food and drink outside Coles once we
could be released from our fire lines. People were very generous in their reception of us and the RFS gained many new volunteer members. Unfortunately there were more big fires that season. Tewantin was evacuated as fire approached along McKinnon Dr and the Springs was again threatened by a wild fire to the west in the Doonan Bridge area. I have learnt that any fire is to be respected. Don’t wait and see – get away and know your escape route. Chris Hall RFS
New Podcast: Locals who have lived through disaster Sunshine Coast Council (SCC)’s new ‘Get Ready Sunshine Coast podcast’ allows listeners to hear real experiences and share life-changing stories and the unravelling impacts. The podcast gives tips and advice on emotional wellbeing, building resilience to disaster in children, and explaining how neighbours can support each other. Ted O’Brien MP said, “Learning from the experiences of others is one of the ways a local community grows and builds resilience. This is something the Sunshine Coast displays time and time again including during the Peregian bushfires”. The Federal Government has provided more than $2.8 million to SCC as part of the disaster recovery funding with the podcast series being one of the initiatives supported.

voluntary work. Rates of volunteering among the baby boomer generation – recently retired, healthy and wanting to contribute to their communities – are continuing to rise compared to previous generations, making significant contributions to communities.
October is Qld Seniors Month Qld Seniors Month provides opportunities to promote positive community attitudes towards ageing and older people, facilitates community participation and enhances community connections. When does a citizen become ‘senior’? In Australia is it generally accepted that seniority begins at 60 and is very much related to age alone. In more traditional societies seniority begins around 50 and is attached to experience and wisdom. In these societies the experienced person is honoured as an ‘elder’. The report What Australians Think of Ageing and Aged Care, a survey for the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (April 2020 by Roy Morgan) said that, “Over 90% of Australians agreed those aged 70 and older have valuable knowledge and experience, add value to the workplace, help by volunteering their time to families and communities, and that the younger generations benefit from the work of older generations”. Australians aged 65 and over contribute almost $39 billion each year in unpaid caring and
There is no specific event in Eumundi this year for our seniors. This is not because our community doesn’t honour its elders but because they are already very busy with their businesses, families, communities and clubs. “Who would have thought I’d be so busy now I’m retired?” exclaimed a local senior. The SCC libraries are offering special activities. You can dress in 80s gear at an outdoor cinema showing of Footloose, or attend workshops on caring for collectables, protecting your interests, self-publishing and improving your iPhone photography. marry my 92-year-old Mum so she could come from Sydney to live with me in Doonan without having to quarantine. When I didn’t get any offers, I went to Plan B and applied for a Border Pass with Exemption from Quarantine. After negotiating what felt like every government department in NSW and Qld that has existed since Federation the answer was, “It’s not this department” or a swift “No”. So, onto Plan C which was to contact MP for Ninderry Dan Purdie. On my behalf Dan pursued the magical Border Pass and Quarantine Exemption on compassionate grounds – and succeeded. Thank you, Dan! With great excitement Mum and I prepared for the move. I knew she could not possibly quarantine on her own as she is aged and frail, has poor sight, is deaf and has mobility and medication issues. I don’t think anyone read this bit in our original application. Quarantine was still required, however ‘at home quarantine’ was not approved despite Dan’s best efforts. Off I went to pick up Mum from Brisbane airport where we were put into a quarantine bus with all the other ‘lepers’ and transferred to a quarantine hotel for our two-week stint. It did seem unfair. Both Mum and I are double jabbed, I live in the bush and am surrounded by wonderful supportive neighbours who would have showered us with supplies left at the mailbox. Not to mention that I had cooked and frozen enough food to feed a gazillion hungry persons just in case we got permission to quarantine at home! But I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth
– Mum was in Qld and I was with her. At the hotel we were given a Welcome Pack with enough information to enable us to operate a guided missile. “How to use our balcony” was interesting. I never found it as our room was hermetically sealed with double-glazed windows. The procedure on “How to answer your door when you hear a knock” was equally puzzling. The instructions were in large print on the back of the door. First you had to wash your hands... put on a mask...close external windows and doors...turn on the bathroom exhaust...and leave the bathroom door open. Of course by the time this was completed there was no one outside the door. I won’t talk about the food. With what we put in the bin it made me think I should dial 9 for reception and ask for a few chooks to lessen our environmental impact. Dear Mum hasn’t entirely lost her marbles as she reminded me that chooks also, “Leave messages and this could get messy”. The cost? I’m not sure exactly but understand we will receive our account in a few weeks. The amounts vary but should be approximately $6,440. Health-wise for Mum it has been confusing and debilitating. For me it has been quite depressing seeing her go backwards but she is not defeated. She is now safe and will thrive amongst my wonderful local community. My only concern in all of this? I had to leave my beloved dog at the Eumundi Pet Resort. Now I’m worried whether he will even want to come back to me because he loves it there and bounds in the door never giving me a backwards glance.

Eye health support Did you know that Medicare will cover the cost of a standard eye test every three years until you are 65? After that you are then eligible for a free eye test every year. If you have an eye disease that requires regular check-ups such as glaucoma or diabetic eye disease, the cost will also be covered by Medicare. The national scheme may also cover certain medically-necessary services such as cataract surgery. (From Starts at 60 June 19 2021). It is estimated more than 300,000 Australians
have glaucoma, yet half don’t know it. Due to the lack of symptoms, many are diagnosed late. Regular eye tests can pick up the condition early and once diagnosed there are several treatment options which can slow or halt the progression of glaucoma vision loss. A new test, performed on a blood or saliva sample, has the potential to identify high-risk individuals before irreversible vision loss occurs. One in 30 Australians will ultimately develop glaucoma – ask for a test. (From The Senior Health ENewsletter 20 July 2021). Margaret Mourik, Association of Independent Retirees, Noosa Branch

by improving cognitive function. There are several types of exercise which are broadly categorised into four categories: endurance, strength, flexibility and balance. While it is important to get a mix of these types into your weekly regime the best exercise type is one that you actually enjoy and complete.
There is no such thing as “too old to exercise” The wonderful thing about the human body is that it continually adapts to the load we place on it. This means that no matter what our age, our body responds beneficially to exercise and movement. Exercise will improve your strength and balance and prevent and manage diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. It gives you more energy and a stronger immune system, improves your mental health and sleep patterns, and has been shown to decrease risk of dementia
Easy ways to start incorporating physical activity into your daily life are to: • Take the stairs instead of the elevator. • Park further away and walk. • Walk your dog. • Do some gardening. • Perform light exercises, stretches or balance while watching TV. While it is never too late to start moving, if you have any health concerns it is a very good idea to get medical clearance from your doctor before starting any exercise program. Additionally, your local physiotherapist or exercise physiologist will get you started on a safe, tailored exercise plan. Helen Swift, Physiotherapist

of wartime Brisbane and the experiences of her grandparents who served, especially both grandmothers. Watching old movies with Grandma Marjorie also inspired Melanie to love stories of the home front. During WW2 Brisbane became a centre for American troops serving in the Pacific, frequently causing conflict with Aussie servicemen and the locals. However many young women enjoyed the attention and gifts which often followed lunches with GIs at Lennon’s Hotel in Brisbane.
With her hugely successful first novel Meet me at Lennon’s still receiving excellent reviews, award winning author Melanie Myers is excited about her next venture which will again be set in Australia’s recent past.
Melanie’s PhD covered extensive research into this period. This resulted in her book where student Olivia delves into the murder of a young girl in the 1940s. Beautifully entwined with Olivia’s own present-day problems, the plot includes many true incidents and shows us a Brisbane very few people now remember.
Born in Sydney but growing-up on the Sunshine Coast, Melanie studied Theatre and Acting at Qld University of Technology but then realised writing gave her more freedom and ‘no need to ask permission’. She was fascinated by stories

of their first silent film Those who Love remains, showing dancing on a beach but The Cheaters remains intact and features Isabel as lead actress under the name of Marie Lorraine. Melanie regrets that so little remains of their work because people never thought to preserve early films. However, the National Library’s digitalised newspapers and the National Film and Sound Archives have revealed a wealth of material to stir her creativity. She hopes to have the first draft completed by the middle of next year. Her characters are a composite of people she knows and meets. Keeping track of them as her plots develop is essential or they ‘run away’. When not researching, writing or working at Sunshine Coast University and University of Qld, Melanie loves to relax by reading and tending to her indoor plants. Her daughter Katerina Gibson is also a writer. Meet me at Lennon’s is published by University of Queensland Press and widely available at bookshops. Eileen Walder

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED “I have no hesitation in recommending Penny, and I’m so pleased that we chose her as our agent. She looked after so many details, big and little, and streamlined the whole process. Nothing was overlooked. The marketing, her communication to us right through the sales campaign, her organisation skills were excellent. We definitely felt that the sale of our home was a priority for her.... And I’m sure she gave the same top-notch service to our buyers” S. Harrington, Doonan. Tinbeerwah Art Group show success
many community volunteer members including four generations of the Bazzo family.
The Tinbeerwah Art Group held their annual show at Tinbeerwah Hall recently and it was the most successful show ever with 33 paintings sold. Art Show coordinator Jan Cooke said, “There was a steady stream of visitors from the time the doors opened. Artist, gold coin entry and raffle donations raised $2,000 in support of Katie Rose Cottage Hospice in Doonan”. Winner of the People’s Choice prize was Mary Zouglakis, with Vivien Lawson winning the Margaret Connolly Hanger’s Prize. Group members greatly appreciate the community’s fantastic support and generosity.
Happy 100th birthday Majestic Theatre
After watching a Laurel and Hardy silent film We Faw Down with Ron West accompanying on the 1937 Compton organ – and an amazing organ recital by renowned Qld organist David Bailey – a massive birthday cake was rolled out and cut by Ron West, Vince Scheenhouwer and Vice President Alison Hadfield. This marked an amazing historical milestone for the Majestic Theatre, the town of Pomona and the Noosa Shire. Following a performance by Airoso Ensemble two stars were laid on the pavement. One for theatre’s 100 years and one for organ builder Don Clark who worked alongside John Brooks (dec.) for six-and-a-half years to bring the Compton organ back to life.
A fantastic time was enjoyed by all at the final 100-year celebration event at the Majestic Theatre Pomona – especially with the new bar open and the champagne flowing. President Vince Scheenhouwer welcomed Deputy Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives Llew O’Brien MP, Sandy Bolton MP, Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie, councillors and

Arts and music Russia comes to Kenilworth Kenilworth Hall on Sunday 26 September was packed with folk listening to the Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra (SCSO) play some Percussionist Philippa Johnson glorious pieces from Russian and German composers. Conductor Adrian King’s selections gave the orchestra all the permission it needed to fill the hall with resounding horns, trumpets and drum rolls in a fiery, passionate piece from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet. The distinctive sound of castanets in RimskyKorsakov’s Capriccio confirmed its Spanish flavour and the airy sound of the violins brought Tchaikovsky’s Sugar Plum Fairy to life. Sustained
applause followed young Sunshine Coast solo violinist Rhys Williams’ outstanding performance of the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor. Bookings are open for the SCSO’s next performance at Caloundra on 17 October and the season’s final at Venue 114 on 4 December with WW2 memories. Visit: www. sunshinecoastsymphonyorchestra.com.

Wild koala rescue
discovering new building developments and their precious food trees not replaced. Koalas are now extinct in 47 Australian electorates. Recent sightings, especially around the Tewantin and Eumundi-Noosa Rd area, show old and new friends are finally daring to appear. September saw local rescue teams and volunteers working non-stop due to the dramatic increase in sightings, along with collecting the injured or dead following dog attacks or traffic hits.

September was wild koala month but who cared? The Australian Koala Foundation recently reported a greater than 30% decline in koala numbers since 2018. The 2019 bushfires saw whole colonies wiped out and while survivors are slowly returning to old habitats, they are

The Qld Koala Crusaders (QKC) is a small group which works passionately for the future of Qld koalas. QKC Ambassador Meghan Halverson said, “My heart breaks, especially during this critical time of year which we call trauma season. Koala hospitals are being inundated with admissions and rescuers are exhausted. Habitat destruction is driving koalas to the edge and there can only be recovery if we act now”. Unfortunately many rescued koalas do not survive their injuries, sickness or the trauma. Meghan still mourns the one she personally transported two weeks ago to Australia Zoo which didn’t survive.

Houdini rescued from Tewantin Rd. Released 19 September at Cooroibah Local carer Anika Lehmann currently has eight koala joeys in care and the burden on her and other dedicated carers receives little publicity. They depend on others to gather the special eucalypt leaves koalas need. Three years ago children at Woombye Montessori International College planted trees on the school grounds and now these leaves are harvested.
Have the actions of a group or person impressed or made a difference to you this year? Nominate them for a Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award on Council’s website! Every success story is celebrated. Aminya was just 500-grams when rescued as a tiny joey when her mother fell out of a tree and after eight months in loving care was released. Koala rescuer and photographer Bernard Jean said, “Moments like this help to encourage and give hope to carers when times are tough doing such selfless work”.

Create your own book
World Space Week
There are plenty of great courses to tell you how to write a story, but what do you do with it after you have written it? How do you hold your own beautifully crafted book in your own hands without ending up with a garage full of unsold books or selling some and only making $1 per copy? What if you only want 10 books, or 50 or 500? How do you turn your story from a twinkle in your eye to flying off the bookshelves in their hundreds?
World Space Week is celebrated annually from 4-10 October and this year’s theme determined by the United Nations is Women in Space. As of March 2021, 564 people have flown into space and 65 were women. The first was Russian woman cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova in June 1963. The first American woman in space was Sally Ride who spent seven days aboard the space shuttle Challenger during its June 1983 mission.
Fizzi and Lili of the Karla the Noosa Koala series – which launched 18 months ago and has now sold more than 4,000 copies – have joined with their production maestro Sean to present a course to help you create your own book. Full details and registration are on Karla’s website: www.karlathekoala.com.au.
World Space Week sparks the imagination of the young and old and highlights the knowledge we have gained, and are still to gain, through science and technology. Think about the moon landings, rockets, satellites, the stars and planets and their impact on our lives. Make a plan to watch the sky with your family.
