Eumundi remembers Eumundi’s November 11 Remembrance Day service was held under the fig trees in Memorial Dr, to remind us of the sacrifice of our soldiers in the Great War 1914-1918 and in all conflicts since. Eumundi community representative Bob Ward led the commemoration. Members of the public and representatives of Eumundi’s school, social, business and service groups laid floral tributes to the fallen. A special guest was Afghan veteran Zachary Travers. Following the service, morning tea was served in the School of Arts Hall, courtesy of Eumundi Historical Assn (EHA). While we may not have a direct memory of the
Ret. RAAF service men (from left) Mark Lloyd, Air Marshal Geoffrey David Shepherd AO, Geoff Dittmar & Greg Ison conflict of that war, wearing a red poppy is a symbol to help remember those who suffered as a result or who never came home. Images of the horrendous conditions of trench warfare and connotations of place names such as Ypres and the Battle of Passchendaele, Fromelles on the Somme and the water-logged fields at Flanders should never be forgotten. “On 11 November 1918 peace was finally declared. During the four years of the war more than 420,000 Australians volunteered for the AIF, the Navy and the Nursing Corps and 60,000 died serving their country.” (National Museum of Australia). Ed & Sarah McNally
Ed & Sarah McNally This year Ed and Sarah McNally and their four children moved from Port Douglas in far North Qld to make Eumundi their new home. They are currently living in Doonan while they wait for their house build to be completed. As Ed can operate his business Resolve Now Finance Solutions from home, the decision to move to Eumundi and closer to Brisbane airport simplifies visits with extended family in Victoria. The more extensive educational opportunities available for their growing family was also a major consideration. They are enjoying Eumundi’s small and welcoming community and exploring the surrounding area.
Michelle is a registered nutritionist and clinical herbalist with her interest in organic gardening, botany and medicinal plants contributing to her framed botanical print artworks. Amy turns excess wood into artforms that embrace their natural beauty. Currently the gallery is open 10am-2pm Friday or by appointment at 164 Seib Rd Eumundi. Further information Pg. 27.

Dani Miles is a long-term exhibitor at the Original Eumundi Markets, as Dani Em Art, where she draws on her love of words and quotations to create her artwork. Dani’s current passion is the energy and inspiration she draws from working with mixed media such as transfers, stencils, feathers, flowers, sand, shells and then the paint mediums of acrylics, inks, watercolours, pens, crayons and pastels. Her style is intuitive and her personal story reflects her vision which comes straight from the heart. Dani explains that she is not a trained artist but is self-taught. She uses her official qualification of Bachelor of Environmental Science and a deep understanding of the marine environment to help conceptualise her art, which takes her craft in a playful direction on wood and canvas with turquoise sea blue themes and mandala designs. Her work also incorporates an emotional component, drawing on her experience of postnatal depression. “I’ve always been a worrier, but it surfaced more so once I had children. PND is not something often addressed amongst women. It takes a lot of courage to speak up when something is not right post-partum. For me it felt like a numbness. Going through a dark tunnel with no end in sight. My art was a way to lose myself in “me” time. To now share with others the calming, therapeutic effects of bright, beautiful colours and hand-painted quotes is a bonus,” says Dani.

the design and construction of the multipurpose learning facility, telling them they had “delivered an investment in young Queenslanders”.
The new G Block group work, carpeted floors and high ceilings which provide quiet, airy spaces for young learners. Visitors were most impressed by how the facility integrates modern educational needs with a traditional style that sits well in the Eumundi landscape and heritage.
Principal Mick Connors outlined the process to realise the vision to accommodate school growth from 350 to 600 students. Beginning in 2016 with discussions with the Regional Facilities Manager, a master plan was approved in 2018. G Block was sited in the middle of the school to act as the hub and meeting place. Construction began at Christmas 2019 and students began using the space after Easter 2021. School Captains Lachlan N and Meg B closed the ceremony by describing the building as a “fresh, fantastic facility”. Janet Millington

IS NOW THE TIME TO SELL?
With the borders opening soon potential Sellers have been asking the question do they wait or go on the market now? Oh, we so wish we had a crystal ball! Will the borders open or will they open and close almost as quickly? Our advise is to go on the market now as interstate buyers are still purchasing sight unseen and sell in isolation before the other properties come on the market. More homes for sale means potentially a lower sale price as there will be less fear of buyers missing out. Some Sellers have chosen to have the photos taken, so they’re ready to come to market as soon as they find their next home. We pride ourselves on providing Sellers with a strategy to make the moving on process as smooth as possible. We’d love to talk to you if you’re thinking of selling.

EarlyAct raises money for a good cause Old school memories A Eumundi Voice reader remembers her unforgettable experiences at primary school, prompted by a visit as a grandparent to her grandkids’ modern school environment. I was amazed, astounded even at the fairyland environment of the children’s classrooms. Every surface, including tree branches attached to the ceilings adorned with twinkling lights and hanging art and craft efforts, was covered with colour. Not to mention the IT and screens at the ready. No expense spared. Then I remembered the sparse, cold or boiling and totally unadorned classrooms at my primary school…except for the timestable posters of course. The never-lit fireplaces in the corner next to the dunce chair where the warm milk bottles sat for hours. Such a joyous time was had by all. The painted spots on the verandah on which victims of mild punishment were made to sit at lunchtimes. More serious crimes were sent to the headmaster’s office to be caned on one’s extended, quivering palms...
Eumundi State School (ESS) has a proud tradition of promoting National Bandana Day which raises awareness about the impact cancer has on young people, whether it be their own battle or that of a family member. Bandana Day is CanTeen’s main annual fundraiser and supports camps and counselling for those 12-25 years whose lives are touched by cancer. On 29 October the ESS EarlyAct Club, proudly dressed in their club shirts, raised $1,500 for CanTeen by selling colourful bandanas to their fellow students and wearing their bandanas. The EarlyAct Club was formed earlier this year and has been giving service to the school in a variety of ways, including running handball competitions. The biggest achievement has been to assist the Student Council with recycling. Every day our members collect and clean refundable containers which go to the recycling centre for reimbursement. EarlyAct has raised over $400 which will be donated to Chappy Sam to assist with purchasing supplies for her wellness space. Julie Cross, EarlyAct Leader & Teacher

We live in paradise
Dennis with sand dragon at night A conversation with Dennis Massoud – sand artist, third generation Noosa resident and environmentalist. Dennis’ grandparents migrated to Australia from Lebanon and owned much of Gympie Tce in Noosaville, with Massoud Park and Jetty named after them. It was an idyllic childhood enriched by pristine natural beauty, strong family ties and famous family friends. Known as ‘The Sandman’ Dennis is a world champion sand sculptor. His expertise, experience and popularity has taken him nine times around the world. His unique style of sand sculpting keeps him in high demand and it is his full-time profession which began as a hobby when he was seven years old. Dennis’ environmental work on retaining the “old Noosa” has earnt him admiration and gratitude from those who also saw the unique gem Noosa was and can still enjoy some of the beauty and feel of the early years. The protection of what really attracts people to the area – the
point of difference from other seaside tourist destinations – became his life’s work. He acknowledges his privilege in growing up in paradise but laments “it is not the paradise it once was”. Dennis spoke about Dennis Massoud campaigns he began or worked on and described averted disasters. In retrospect it is easy to see how these proposed developments would have spoilt Noosa completely. Dennis worked on the campaign against a three-storey carpark planned by the federal government which was designed to replace the last remnant rainforest to the right of the main entrance to the National Park. He spoke about the IMAX theatre theme park, information centre and 164 seat restaurant which were all approved for Laguna Lookout. Dennis disputed the proposal to bitumen the entire walking track in Noosa National Park.

These people had a strong sense of place and realised not all development is progress. Some of this ‘progress’ would have destroyed the Noosa they loved and what attracted others.
A natural-style walking track Parks and Wildlife staff arrived in the early hours one morning to bitumen from the park entrance to Tea Tree. On hot days the bitumen melted and stuck to walkers’ feet. Rather than removing it, they took sand from Noosa Springs and covered the bitumen. The sand absorbed the chemicals, turned the sand brown and this muck washed off into the rockpools where it killed marine life. As a result, no more bitumen was used in the park. A weak concrete compound was poured at one stage but that too was quickly removed.
These examples demonstrate that future generations can respect preservation and conservation rather than inappropriate development. We need to be vigilant when considering changes and ensure they are environmentally sound and add to the quality of life and well-being of residents and business owners. Janet Millington
We must express our gratitude to Dennis and the hundreds of people who worked on these and many other campaigns to retain our paradise.

Councillor Div 9 - Cr Maria Suarez Verrierdale Rd, Verrierdale rehabilitation works are, at time of writing, 95% complete with the road closure section re-opened. Works finished two weeks ahead of schedule with the final surfacing to be completed in-line with the Dept of Transport and Main Roads specifications. These final works do not require a road closure. The long-awaited sealing of Zgrajewski Rd is also expected to start this financial year. I get to be involved in some great projects and recently, through my Environment Portfolio, I shared an inspirational day with more than 300 Sunshine Coast students as part of the 2021 Kids in Action Conference. Kids from 21 schools within the SCC regional area and Noosa came together to celebrate and showcase their environmental projects. Designed for Years 5-8, the program is a chance for students to share knowledge,
understanding and passion for the environment, the planet and sustainability. Projects were guided by First Nation and community mentors and teachers. CH Ball Lookout on the Sunshine Coast Council’s northern border is a delightful place to gather thoughts, share food, sit in silence or gaze into the sunset. It is popular and deserves investment but it suffers neglect because of its distal proximity to council’s main action. Rainer’s Hut at the lookout used to shelter a couple of wooden tables with benches that were warm on bare legs in winter and cool in summer. They have gone and been replaced by one aluminium table and a couple of broad benches apparently hauled from the back of one of council’s storage sheds. They were less than pristine when installed and sport an off-centre hole for inserting an outdoor umbrella under the shelter’s roof. Then there’s the garbage. Recently an upright air cooler was progressively being dismantled over a fortnight. “Why would ya?” asked Matt
Aitchison from Buderim who was enjoying a quiet moment recently. “There’s a bin there. It’s pure laziness.” “To who left this: Please don’t ruin it for everyone. This is not a dump. Show kindness, respect this view and those who come here,” said a tiny note, penned and pinned onto the dismantled cooler dated 19/10. The shelves that arrived with the cooler quickly disappeared but a dog-mangled quilt and an empty Pasito can with attached Chicken McNuggets docket replaced them. Garbage that regularly overflows onto the dirt and blows around needs collecting more often to preserve the amenity for those coming to enjoy the natural beauty.

I was delighted to attend the official opening of Eumundi State School’s new $8.8m learning building earlier this month. This fantastic facility features 8 new classrooms and a music and performing arts centre, ensuring our young students have access to the resources they need to achieve their best. I remember back in 2017 when I first started in this role, Principal Mick Connors told me about the school’s need for an undercover area, and the vision for a new learning facility. It’s great to see it come to fruition. As most readers are aware, last week the State Government announced new public health measures effective from 17 December, or when the State reaches 80% of eligible Queenslanders fully vaccinated. In response, my office has been inundated with inquiries from residents and small business owners, and we’ve been asking the Health Minister’s office for more details. Throughout this pandemic, my parliamentary colleagues and I have been demanding greater transparency and accountability from the State Government in relation to its management of COVID 19. Our tourism operators and small businesses, in particular, are desperate for a bumper festive trading season, but many are still in the dark around how the new public health measures will impact them. With tourism such an integral part of the Sunshine Coast economy, it’s critical that we have greater clarity around these new rules. For the past 18 months, these small and family-run businesses have been at the coalface of the COVID crisis. They have been hanging on month by month for a detailed plan, but unfortunately the latest advice only raises more questions. If you have any concerns about how the new measures will impact you or your business, please let me know.

raises enough to ensure that the free Christmas shopping day goes ahead, but direct donations are essential and can be dropped off at Classy Lady. “Presents for teenagers are really important as they are often forgotten,” said Lorraine. “We still need donations of packaged or tinned food, special new toys, children’s underwear and packets of knickers. There is a huge problem of economic disadvantage in this community from Noosaville right up to Pomona, out to Kenilworth, down to Coolum and up the coast. “I have the pleasure of thinking about how these children and mums and dads can sit together on Christmas morning opening parcels and how this makes these kids feel like other kids.” Frances Zirkler
October has seen an increase in health-related complaints via Qld Health that are forwarded to local police for action in relation to businesses serving food and beverage and the non-use of masks while serving customers. We have tried to assist all businesses in Eumundi and everyone should now be on the same page. All persons serving customers need to wear a mask. If an employee has a medical exemption, they are not allowed to serve customers and alternate duties should be arranged. This advice may change. There were 38 calls for Eumundi police for attendance or emergency in October. Thirteen offenders were charged with four facing charges for possessing dangerous drugs. One is facing court for producing dangerous drugs. Police are currently guarding a high-level hydro set up off Bunya Rd North Arm which was discovered during a police executed search warrant. October also saw an increase in traffic-related offences including Dangerous Driving, Drive
Without Due Care and Attention, Disqualified Driving and Unlicensed Driving. Three offenders were charged by the Road Policing Unit for drug driving and Eumundi police caught two drink drivers with the highest reading being a 46-year-old old female with a reading of 0.111%. There were 73 infringement notices issued for speeding and hoon-related offences. Patrols targeted high-risk accident zones and public reported traffic complaints relating to speeding on local roads. There were no burglary or break-and-enter offences recorded for Eumundi, or stealing from unlocked vehicles. Clinical hypnotherapy is a safe and effective way to help people overcome challenges to restore well-being, balance and happiness to their lives. It can help improve your relationship with food and losing weight (without dieting), quit smoking, overcome a fear or phobia, combat nightmares and insomnia, increase confidence and learn strategies for coping with chronic pain and illness. This is possible because what the mind can conceive it can achieve. This means if you genuinely want to make a change in your life, hypnotherapy may be able to assist in helping you get from where you are – physically, mentally and emotionally – to where you want to be. Success rates are enhanced when programs are tailored to each individual. Sessions can be conducted face-to-face or via Zoom for shift and FIFO workers. Melbourne Cup gala event Nairobi style The Melbourne Cup fundraiser in Nairobi – hosted by not-for-profit Wisdom, Ability, Motivation and Access (WAMA) at their social enterprise restaurant – featured traditional activities and broadcast, sweeps and raffles. These were adapted to reflect the reality that the race had already been run and won while most Kenyans were sleeping. WAMA’s CEO is a proud Australian and the happy crowd included Australian dignitaries, visitors and long-term Kenyan residents. The enterprise hires and pays people living with disability over a three-month on-the-job training program to help them find work. Disabilities which trainees live with include albinism, often with visual and hearing impairment, and physical and learning disabilities.

Parks and gardens Herb and Wild Weed Day Glenda Thomas has a passion for using plants and herbs within her everyday life. Her moniker of The Good Witch came from Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz. Glenda thought it suited her as, “I am always creating lotions and potions using essential oils or herbs from the garden. I also use a lot of the herbs and wild weeds in my cooking and make tinctures as well.” On Sunday 28 November from 10am-1pm Glenda has organised a Herb and Weed Day so people can learn how to identify herbs and wild weeds, their uses and how best to utilise them. Attendees will have an opportunity to choose a herb or wild weed to contribute to the lunchtime salad or make a herbal tea. Phone: 0405 154 330.

Kin Kin Art Fair The inaugural Kin Kin Art Fair at the School of Arts Hall on Sunday 7 November was a huge success and offered Creations Market visitors something extra to see. Visitors and local Kin Kinians caught-up with friends and neighbours at the showgrounds, strolled around the stalls and headed to the hall to admire some paintings, jewellery, ceramics, mosaics, woodcarvings and photographs. Among the artists were Peter Hughes, Annette Tyson and Erica Evans who demonstrated their techniques and tips. The work of children from Kin Kin State School and home-schooling classes was also on display. The Art Fair was organised on behalf of the Kin Kin Community Group by Josie and Max at the Kin Kin Depot gift shop and will hopefully become a regular event.
Cooroora Woodworkers Club The recent Cooroora Woodworkers annual woodcraft show at Cooroy Memorial Hall featured amazing work by club members, talented local school students and woodworkers from other clubs. There were displays of woodturning, box making, carving and fretwork and visitors watched logs being milled into slabs which were available for purchase. Foundation member Alan Warner said the club was established 33 years ago and this was the 31st year for the show. The club has 140 members from beginners to highly professional artisans. Pam Window has been a fret-worker for 25 years and is passing her skills and knowledge onto fellow member Maureen Bowden who now has 15 years’ experience.

have always enjoyed working with timber after growing up with the family business Country Frames which ran for 35 years,” said Amy.
Gallery on Seib The new Gallery on Seib at 164 Seib Rd Eumundi features work from Michelle Gill and daughter Amy Steel. One fateful day over a year ago massive storms hit Eumundi and surrounding areas with hundreds of trees flattened in Seib Rd. Timber everywhere was going to waste and Amy saw the potential of turning this excess wood into art forms. Amy’s husband cuts the wood into various workable sizes and she uses her talent with a sander to carve and polish (with bee’s wax from their on-site hive) the pieces into various objects embracing the natural beauty of the wood. “I

Environment Rain harvesting: tank water Capturing rainwater is an important way of ensuring water fulfils its duties in the never-ending cycle from rain to the ocean. Some of these cycles are tens of thousands of years long, such as the water in underground aquafers or locked in ice caps. Other cycles can be just hours, days or weeks.

On this day Dr Who turns 58! Fire-fighting water supply
Permaculture principles state the shorter the cycle the more ethical it is for short-term usage such as meeting household needs. When planting long-term forests it is ethical to use water that has been stored for longer, such as lakes or through bores. To best utilise this natural resource we must ensure tank water is as clean as possible. Keep gutters clean and be careful of overhanging Jacarandas as the flowers will ferment in the gutter, flush into the tank and give your water a yeasty flavour. Tank cleaning is recommended every two to three years to remove the sediment that can breed bacteria. In the case of fire, tank water can be set up to feed sprinklers on the roof. Our two tanks have metal (copper) pipes and the pump is fireproofed. Qld Health sets out the regulatory roles and responsibilities for rainwater tanks. Find out

Happy Birthday to Dr Who for 23 November! Two months after its British TV debut in 1963, Dr Who appeared on the ABC and was embraced by generations of Australians. It might have been in black and white but it was still scary when the Daleks threatened to exterminate us all. Loyal Whovians can cite all 13 doctors from William Hartnell to the BBC’s series 13 in 2021 with Jodie Whittaker as Dr Who’s current regeneration. Dr Who’s instantly recognisable theme music was composed by an Australian, Ron Grainer and Australians Tony Coburn and CE Webber wrote the story for the first serial. Other Australian connections include actress Janet Fielding who played the Doctor’s companion Tegan from 1981-84 and Kylie Minogue who was Dr Who’s companion on the 2007 Christmas special Voyage of the Damned. Spotlight on Joe’s Bar & Grill Bill and Kellyann Misener took over the kitchen at Joe’s Bar & Grill three years ago and quickly became firm favourites with locals and visitors. They promise to still be serving when Joe’s Waterhole changes hands. The couple began working together in 2014 with Bill’s Chefs2Go business which supplies chefs around Australia. Bill trained at the legendary Barnacle Bill’s in Cairns and says it is a priority to satisfy regular clientele who want bangers’n’mash or fish’n’chips. “We are not a gastropub but provide fresh, locally sourced ingredients and our most popular dishes must stay, even when we change our menus,” said Bill. The daily specials for lunch and dinner allow Bill to offer something different such as a mouth-watering curry and chargrilled swordfish. Nightly themes include Wednesday schnitzel and trivia, Thursday ribs and
‘Bill’s Burger’
Kellyann and Bill wings (plus kids eat free), Friday seafood specials and Sunday all-day roasts which have crowds coming to enjoy live music in the beer-garden. Bill and Kellyann cater for special events at Joe’s offering three courses, alternate drop, buffet or finger food. During Covid they operated a phone take-away service for their affordable, good quality pub food. Its success sees this remaining popular for residents collecting on the way home or seeking a delicious ready-cooked meal. Bill will even cater for special requests – cooking especially for the young boy who demanded “Spag Bol”.
