Rain bomb hits the hinterland

Eumundi-Noosa Rd by Seib Rd Eumundi suffered at the hands of a ‘rain bomb’ weather event that brought drenching rain, dangerous water flows, widespread damage and caused tragic personal losses. Rapidly rising waters on Friday meant school bus runs were cancelled, so hundreds of students were not able to get to school because of the risk of being stranded in town. Local roads were flooded, and many hinterland towns were cut off completely as creeks could not cope with the downpour. Residents lost power and communications, locals

couldn’t get to work and meetings were hastily rescheduled. The Verrierdale postie couldn’t do the day’s deliveries. Events were cancelled, including Park Sounds music and the Eumundi Markets, which only happens during the worst weather. Rain gauges overflowed every few hours with the continued torrents - many registering over 400mm in a day. Eumundi Range Rd, Eumundi-Noosa Rd both had water over them. Memorial Dr was partially flooded and the drain at Elizabeth St could barely cope with the incoming water Cont. p3

However, Eumundi escaped relatively unscathed compared to our neighbours in Belli Park, Doonan, Verrierdale, Cooran and Kin Kin who fared much worse. A Kin Kin resident emailed: We got smashed last night. Five direct lighting hits. Rain 400mm. We are currently isolated and can’t get past floods all over Pender Creek Rd. Massive lightning blew out all our communications, blew fans, blew electricals. We had lightening causing sparks and burning smells inside the house. Holy Mother of all storms. It’s crazy here. No-one can “get out” and we have friends using our property to avoid the flooded roads and check on other folks over our hill. Reviewing insurance policies – tick. Electrician – tick when can get through. Telstra – next on the list. Best wishes for a quick recovery everyone.

SCC’s Beach Clean Up Program incorporates five regional beach clean-up events: School Beach Clean Up, Clean Up for the Hatchlings, Clean Up Australia Day, World Environmental Day Festival and Plastic Free July.

In the Noosa region, the Noosa Integrated Catchment Assn (NICA) will have 12 public sites – from the beaches at Peregian to Noosa and all Hinterland towns – where volunteers can register on the day between 8am and 11am to do their bit to help. A number of community organisations are also involved in cleaning up.

Beach Clean Up has removed more than 13 tonnes of rubbish from our beaches over the past five years. Last year’s program saw almost 3,000 participants collectively remove more than 94,000 pieces of rubbish weighing more than two tonnes from 91 Sunshine Coast beach sites. Visit: www.bit.ly/3tddtZ4.

Eumundi Placemaking

Doonan-Eumundi Local Planning Area

Last year many residents contributed on several occasions to SCC’s Eumundi Placemaking sessions with council staff and consultants to design improvements to Eumundi’s streetscape. These included improved lighting, better pavements, more shade trees, changes to parking and safer crossings for pedestrians.

Residents are invited to participate in “helping SCC prepare a new planning scheme that supports our diverse communities to thrive in their own way”. Display boards in town ask you to be involved in the Doonan-Eumundi Local Planning Area (LPA) by 31 March.

So, what’s happening you may ask? The SCC update sessions and display of the current plan on 24 and 27 February were delayed due to Covid. An online site will be available from 14 March to 11 April for community responses and a paper survey available at the Eumundi Post Office and The Imperial Hotel.

“A planning scheme is a legal document that helps manage growth and change and sets out what sort of new development can be expected in local areas. A new planning scheme will set the vision for the Sunshine Coast in 2041 and guide the way we grow and develop as a region.”

Organised by locals, and to complement council’s work, a meeting will be held on Wednesday 23 March at Eumundi School of Arts Hall from 5.30pm to ensure residents and business owners have ample opportunity to come together and discuss the proposal options.

See: www.haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov. au and click on New Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme Project, find Local Planning Directions and follow the link to the Eumundi-Doonan survey. Read the proposed Local Planning Directions and complete the survey. Visit: www. bit.ly/36O2YDV.

Council’s Placemaking teams have also contacted local community groups to meet with representatives at small meetings on 22, 23 or 24 March. For further information visit the SCC Have Your Say website: www. haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or email: placemaking@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Let your visitors know that they need to be extra careful during the three-year trial when they try to interpret the parking signage that decorates Eumundi’s streets. Alternatively, recommend they pay a few dollars and park all day, without fear, at one of the three carparks in town. Two have entrances from Napier Rd and one from Albert St – the fee contributes to a range of volunteer organisations and projects.

“biological diversity” drew attention to species loss in the Amazon and helped rally the political will to protect them and their habitats. Edward O. Wilson, 92, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard University, introduced controversial theories about the evolutionary basis of animal societies, including human ones. He became a Pulitzer Prize-winning author of books about the natural world that inspired millions of readers. Edward O. Wilson (Jim Harrison www.bit.ly/3vl75BC)

Thomas Lovejoy (Jerry Freilich www.bit.ly/3tgTs3A)

Who invented “biodiversity”? It’s a term we hear often, but who invented ‘biodiversity’? Last year saw the deaths of two of the world’s most influential naturalists and advocates for using science to protect the world’s flora and fauna. Thomas Lovejoy, 80, a National Geographic Society conservationist who coined the term

Both men were known for their quirks of dress – Lovejoy for his bowties and Wilson for his field vest full of pockets. Both did research that established that smaller natural areas, like those created by human activities, tend to be more vulnerable to losing species. In large part through Wilson’s writings, Lovejoy’s “biological diversity” became “biodiversity” and a household word. The scientists “were really sort of bookends of the conservation movement,” says Daniel Simberloff, an ecologist at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and a former Wilson student. 3 4 Aussie Bush Cockies Cockroaches are an ancient bug with fossils indicating they have been around for more than 200 million years. Ecologically they have benefits such as transporting pollen to increase plant reproduction and adding nitrogen to soils. They are a healthy protein-filled snack for toads, frogs, possums and lizards. The name cockroach comes from the Spanish: cucaracha. A song anyone? They are insects with bodies divided into three parts – the head, thorax three pairs of legs, and abdomen. Cockroaches can live without a head for up to a week due to a nervous and circulatory system that works outside of the head. They can survive up to 30 days without food but will die within a week without water. The majority have wings but are not good flyers.

Our most impressive native cockroach, at 7.5cm, is the Giant Burrowing Cockroach (Macropanesthia rhinoceros) which creates permanent burrows up to a metre deep and comes up at night to find dry leaves to take into the burrow. Most household pest species are imported, not native. With an average life span of one year they are social bugs and unfortunately for us, prolific breeders. They may contaminate food with bacteria and may trigger intestinal diseases. They may also be allergen and asthma triggers. Most are nocturnal, coming out at night to search for food – which is why you see them when you go to the kitchen for that midnight snack! If you wish to rid your home of pest species without the use of pesticides, good cockroach repellents are essential oils with peppermint, lavender, citrus, eucalyptus and other scents. Also try coffee grounds, lemons, cucumbers and bay leaves. There is a myth that cockroaches can survive a nuclear blast. The origins of this myth followed the 1945 Hiroshima bomb when reports emerged they were found roaming over the rubble. They can indeed withstand a huge amount of radiation – 100 times more than humans – but the heat from a nuclear blast would kill them instantly.

Globally there are 4,000+ species and Australia has over 500 species of native cockroaches. Aussie cockies are harmless native insects, not the pest species you find in your home. Only one of these – the smoky brown cockroach Periplaneta fuliginosa – is sometimes found in gardens and bush areas near human habitation.

Bush cockies are omnivorous opportunistic eaters snacking on pollen, bark, wood and leaf litter. Females may carry an egg case and young hatch as nymphs and change exoskeletons multiple times as they grow.

Local planning area Please take the time to provide feedback on the planning directions for the new planning scheme. This is the first step in preparing for the region to guide future growth and development and help preserve the things we love about our local area. Have your say by visiting council’s website by 31 March. You can view an information session for the Eumundi area and read associated information on the ‘have your say’ page: www.bit. ly/35jHrT0. Organic bins From July 2022 the garden

organics bin collection service is expanding to households across the Sunshine Coast which don’t currently have one. It is an easy and convenient way to dispose of your lawn clippings, weeds, leaves and other organic garden materials. Properties over 5,000sqm will automatically be exempt from the service at this stage, however you can sign up to receive a bin if you would like. The garden organics bin service is expected to be around $35 per year for a 240L bin and is the first step on our journey to a future Food Organics and Garden Organics (aka FOGO) collection service. If you already have a garden organics bin your annual fees will reduce to the new rate. You can find more information including the exemption criteria at: www.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au/gardenbin. A ‘charm’ of Magpies

Eumundi Magpies play fair The Eumundi Magpies Futsal Club members are a fun, friendly group and fiercely believe in fair play and a fair-go for everyone. Aged 4-11 years they have team training on Wednesdays and Fridays and meet on Saturday mornings in the Eumundi School Hall. In 2019 Coach Fernando (Fern) Navarrete put his soccer experience and expertise into forming the club where boys and girls learn soccer skills, how to improve their fitness, and team cooperation in a fun atmosphere – building up their confidence through praise rather than criticism. No prior soccer knowledge is needed and the emphasis is on everyone having a ‘fair go’. Even during competition matches Fern insists every player has time on the field. The 4-5 year-old littlies meet at 8.30am for sociable fun while learning basic skills and cooperation with others. At 9.30am the 6-7 yearolds learn to follow instructions, combine as a group and have healthy fun while improving game skills. At 10.30am the 8-11 year-old group learn the discipline of game rules, how to be part of a team and praise other members’ successes. At a recent post-game discussion the youngsters’ mentioned the ‘amazing goal’ scored, the ‘fantastic saves’ by the goalkeeper, ‘everyone gave their best’ and ‘we’re improving every week’ with a focus on the positives, despite disappointment at losing a recent match. The Sunshine Coast competition, in the 10-yearold division, has 10 teams from Caloundra to Eumundi. One Magpies team has made it 20

through to the finals of the competition. Magpies also have a team which will play in the final of the 9-year-old division. Competition games are generally played at USC or Clippers Stadium in Buderim. The Magpies are Skills training a mixed team but play against all boys’ teams. While the three coaches are male, Fern hopes as the club expands a female coach will come onboard. Fern said the fledgling club had wonderful support from Eumundi businesses and organisations including Experience Eumundi, Eats, Flying West, Noosa Hinterland Realty and Rotary who supplied the end-of-year trophies. Interest from parents and other residents means the club is growing and it has now applied for registration as a not-for-profit organisation. The emphasis is on the Magpies being strongly connected to Eumundi with the youngsters proud to represent their town. Fern selected the name because magpies are fighters and survivors and the team has dramatic black and white colours. “We have a very committed president, secretary, treasurer and committee,” explained Fern. “We welcome anyone who has an interest in soccer or who has some spare time and would love to be part of our club, even without youngsters who play.” Nina said her son Archer (7yrs) “enjoys the fun of team learning and the social connections”. Lisa, mother of Kalani (5yrs) and Marley (7yrs) said “they are learning sportsmanship, how to follow instructions and being part of a community”. Player Jack said it is “good fun playing other teams”. Fern has positive ideas for moving forward and encourages more local input and new members. Help create a new planning scheme

ESS Wellness and learning The Wellbeing Hub at Eumundi State School (ESS) has been established in the old Arthouse on Caplick Way, with the building freshly painted and redecorated. The Hub provides a space for students, classes and families to focus on positive learning and activities. The ESS Chaplain holds before-school and lunch-time wellbeing activities for students. Another key element of the program will be information sessions for parents. The school is also working on an integrated approach to teaching the Australian curriculum. Teachers in their year level teams are reshaping the way science, HASS, technology and health are taught. This approach to teaching shifts towards ‘interest projects’ that can be more meaningful, purposeful and fun for students. The school’s vision is to involve parents, families and community in celebrations of learning. In Term 1, Year 1 students are engaging in their Boat That Floats unit integrating science, maths, design and technologies culminating in a Water Fun Day. A/Principal Sarah McDonagh said, “We want the school to be a positive place where students are happy to come and positively engage in their learning”.

Growing sustainably and preserving the things we love about the Sunshine Coast will take careful planning. trumpet player, Col Brain. Before he died, Col placed his most prized life possessions into a cupboard and locked it. Told through the eyes of his grandson – award winning ABC presenter and performer Joel Carnegie – here is the discovery of a time capsule of Australian musical life. It is a heart-warming quest to uncover what Col wanted us to know about him, by the things he left behind.

Stardust and The Mission Who are we and where do we come from? These questions are at the core of Stardust and The Mission at The J Noosa from 7.30pm on Saturday 2 April. These two powerful yet forgotten Australian stories are part of a national tour created and produced by The Space Company. Stardust tells the story of bandleader and

The Mission follows the journey of “Fighting Gunditjmara” man, Allan McDonald – one of the first Aboriginal soldiers from Victoria to enlist for war. He fought at Gallipoli and Beersheba only to be denied a soldier’s settlement on his return to Australia and forced from his land at the Lake Condah Mission. This captivating and rollicking story – told by his great, great nephew Tom Molyneux – tells the truth of Uncle Allan’s struggle fighting for country, love and justice. The production will greatly appeal to senior high school students studying drama, theatre studies, music, English, and/or Indigenous studies. Visit: www.bit.ly/3M9erxW. Book at The J Noosa.

TWO POWERFUL, YET FORGOTTEN AUSTRALIAN STORIES Stardust + The Mission is a double bill about strength, courage, determination and “seeing the extraordinary in the everyday” – with these two stories connected through a shared investigation: to trace the stories from our family ancestors to uncover who we are today. Warnings: includes adult themes, occasional coarse language, smoke, and scenes depicting war and violence. ‘The Mission’ contains depictions of, and reference to, Aboriginal people who have passed away. It also describes confronting content in relation to the massacre, dispossession, and mistreatment of First Nations Peoples.

Dr), or make it part of your Woolworths shopping at Noosa Civic (28 Eenie Creek Rd). B-cycle is supported by the Commonwealth and all State and Territory governments and authorised by the ACCC. No, you should not put batteries in your normal bin or recycling rubbish bin because they won’t be recycled and are a fire hazard if crushed or damaged.

Don’t throw them in the bin! We all know about reuse and reduce but new ways to recycle are always welcome. A push to recycle old batteries is making it easy to ensure the valuable metals have a chance to be reused, not discarded into landfill where they “leach toxic materials into waterways and ecosystems”.

Grab an old container with a lid. Label it Used Batteries. Keep out of reach of children. Keep a roll of tape in the container so it is easy to put duct tape, clear sticky tape or electrical tape over the terminals. “If battery terminals touch, they can spark and create a fire hazard.” Batteries may have terminals at one end or both ends, so put clear tape on both sides of button batteries. “B-cycle Battery Recycling” website has an easy-to-use way to find local drop-off sites. For Eumundi residents it is Trade Tools Noosa (30 Rene St), or Officeworks Noosaville (1 Gateway

Inspiring women

PWAPM President Nicky Turner presenting the 2021 Excellence Award to Kuyan Rider, alongside previous winner Michelle Downs For more than a decade locals have appreciated the services of Laguna Pest Control owned by Jay and Nicky Turner. After moving to the Sunshine Coast from Geelong, Victoria they have grown their business exponentially in the Noosa region and Hinterland and won prestigious local and national awards for their service and expertise in pest management. In 2018 Jay and Nicky travelled to Orlando USA to attend the annual PestWorld Conference where

Nicky attended a networking breakfast hosted by the Professional Women in Pest Management. She was struck by the acknowledgement of women’s contribution to the industry in the USA. Leadership, mentoring and award presentations were integral to the conference and Nicky asked herself, “Why don’t we have this in Australia?” Inspired by this Nicky established the Professional Women in Australian Pest Management (PWAPM) women’s networking and support organisation. As CEO and President of PWAPM she hopes to continue to encourage and inspire more women to become involved in what was once a male-dominated industry and highlight the diverse roles women play – from administration through to field technicians. PWAPM created a Facebook group where women could communicate amongst themselves without the pressure of the bigger male personalities. The association’s priorities are to collaborate, connect, mentor and support women. Within a year PWAPM presented the industry’s first women’s Excellence Award at Australia’s National Pest Conference.

In 2021 PWAPM coordinated a National Leadership Conference on the Gold Coast and introduced two new awards and the first honorary life member recipient. The conference program included Laguna Pest Control’s pest technician speakers who effectively Sheri Ambler lead people, inspire commitment within the workforce, manage change, and mentor and develop employees. Despite some early stumbles the industry has embraced PWAPM with most manufacturers, suppliers, service providers and leading industry bodies sponsoring and supporting PWAPM’s endeavours. This year’s conference was postponed due to Covid, however PWAPM has joined forces with the Australian Environmental Pest Managers Association to host a networking breakfast for women at the National Pesticon Conference in June. Gambling fund success for heritage site Congratulations to the hard-working members of the Eumundi and District Historical Association, who have secured $34,000 in the latest round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund to install air-conditioning in the Eumundi Museum. This is exciting news, as it caps off a very busy year for the Association who have been working hard to refurbish the site inside and out. Climate controlled air-conditioning is essential to protect not only the existing collection, but also allow the space to be used for visiting exhibitions, so it’s great to see this funding being used for such an important upgrade that will benefit the wider community. Congratulations also to Sunshine Coast Physie and Dance, based at North Arm. They too have been successful in the latest grant round, securing $29,800 to upgrade their facility. In other gambling news, don’t forget the $100,000 Super Round is now open, with applications due by 31 March. If you haven’t applied for a Gambling grant previously, you can find out all the details, including eligibility, at www.justice.qld.gov.au/initiatives/ community-grants

The 70th anniversary lunch at Flaxton Gardens in 2018 December 2020 at the Qld Air Museum in Caloundra

Noosa Porsche Connection Around six years ago one Porsche owner was out for a drive, spotted another Porsche, and started a conversation with its owner. This was followed by a coffee to talk about their ‘pride and joy’ toys. Every Monday after that they met at the Bullitt Espresso Café in Noosaville. Soon, other Porsche owners joined in and eventually the Noosa Porsche Connection was established which now boasts more than 100 members. We are not a formal club just a group of people who love cars, and in particular Porsches, although one does not necessarily have to have a Porsche to belong to our group. Just be a lover of cars and good coffee. There is no committee, fees, or formal meetings and no politics. A core group regularly attend one of four regular venues for Coffee and Cars Monday mornings: Compass Connections Café at Nambour, Bus Stop Espresso Cooroy, Recreation Club Peregian Springs and Nutworks Café Yandina. Every three months we arrange a group drive in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland ending

with lunch. Our first drive was in 2018 for the 70th anniversary of Porsche cars. Many clubs worldwide celebrated the event with black-tie functions but we chose to have a group drive, including partners, starting at Eumundi and driving in convoy through the Hinterland for lunch at Flaxton Gardens. Over the last few years our group drives have been to Montville and the Palmwoods Hotel, to Bowden’s car museum in Buderim, to Winya Wines at Kilcoy, the Qld Air Museum at Caloundra, and Gympie for Christmas lunch at Gunabal Homestead. To celebrate Ferry Porsche’s birthday (19 September 1909) we enjoyed lunch at Kin Kin’s Black Ant Gourmet Café. For more information contact Peter on 0418 310 364 or email: peterdavo997@gmail.com. DIK South Brisbane

Rotary’s humanitarian support In a world where there is so much need it is good to know that Rotary clubs around Australia are working together to support communities abroad that are crying out for help. Rotary Australia World Community Services (RAWCS) enables Rotary clubs to undertake projects that assist with recovery and build resilience in Australia and overseas. The organisation that makes this possible is Donations in Kind (DIK) and has been operating for over 30 years, providing humanitarian aid

District 9620 DIK is a South Brisbane distribution centre that accepts equipment like hospital beds, school furniture, mobility aids and general medical consumables, educational equipment and stationery and books. These are then packed into containers and sent to countries like PNG, Solomon Islands and Tonga. Items are collected in response to requests for humanitarian assistance. DIK is both a resource and a support service that turns potential landfill into lifesaving aid. After the volcanic eruption and tsunami in Tonga, a container is being prepared that will contain hospital resupply items and school equipment. Businesses were asked if they had any surplus fishing equipment as fishing communities in Tonga had lost everything. One company has just generously donated $30,000 worth of fishing gear so fishers in Tonga can get their livelihoods back on track.

of drawing power from the electricity grid. Depending on the size of your system, your solar panels may generate excess electricity. This can be fed back into the grid to be used by other consumers. Electricity companies will pay you a feed-in tariff. The value of your feed-in tariff is something to consider when weighing up your options. Smart meters measure the amount of electricity you feed into the grid or take from it. That data determines how much you pay, or if you will get a refund, as calculated by the electricity provider. Greg Ison

How Does Solar Work? Part 2 How does a solar system actually work? When the sun is shining solar panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC). The inverter transforms this into Alternating Current (AC) power. This is the energy which the appliances and lights you have in your home utilise – instead
