The history of Verrierdale

Parents and students at Verrierdale State School, 1957 (Private collection) In 1924 Verrierdale was described as “a village little known and seldom heard of, located four to six miles east of Eumundi”. Not much has changed in nearly 100 years. In January last year a group of local residents wanted to research how Verrierdale came to be, however there was little information available officially and many stories were considered potentially truth, hearsay, or childhood memories. They decided to uncover its history and put it in writing for future generations. Along the way the

group successfully applied for a Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) grant towards printing costs of their book History of Verrierdale 1860-1960. Project leader Kathy Lynch said, “This is our story – one of hardship and grit of those who struggled to make an agricultural farm from their grant of virgin forest. Settlers have been here since the beginning of land allocation in the 1860s. Cobb & Co passed through our territory on their way to the Gympie Goldfields and the new colony of Brisbane was built with timber cut from Cont. p3

Paul and Doris Litfin, 1949 (Private collection) Cont. from p1 our forests. Our relationship with Indigenous people is also special as until 1860 settlement in the Maroochy area was prohibited to preserve the Bunya trees which were an important part of communal life.” The book has been written by the community, for the community, and covers the first 100 years of Verrierdale’s settlement. Acknowledging the traditional owners – the Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi people – it delves into the first arrivals of Europeans in the Maroochy area including those who took up cattle runs such as the Yandina run, timber-getters and first settlers. The historical account looks at the processes of land selection, early industries and the arrival of services. There are snippets of the life of many early Verrierdale families whose names are amongst present-day residents. Verrierdale State School and Verrierdale Hall are recognised as the glue that bound the community together and early developments of neighbouring communities are discussed.

Caprichos at D.I.V.E. D.I.V.E. Theatre Collective’s new show Caprichos is a gothic physical theatre performance about the whims, caprices and desires of contemporary society. In a world of labyrinths, mirrors, dreams and nightmares, a parade of surreal characters invite audience members to contemplate how far they have drifted from their true selves in the name of vanity and social acceptance. Inspired by Francisco de Goya’s Los Caprichos, D.I.V.E. Collective’s masquerade performance combines movement, visual arts, music, literature, philosophy, provocative narratives and multilingual perspectives into a succession of poetic moments. The show is funded by SCC and the Sunshine Coast Arts Foundation and is presented in partnership with Anywhere Festival and The Old Ambulance Station. Reader’s story

Ref. Phil Kelly watches the scrum between Eumundi Dragons (red & green) and Dalby Wheatmen (blue & yellow)

Dragons go to Dalby Rachel Dean told Eumundi Voice she had never written a piece for a community magazine before but felt compelled to do so after a great weekend away with the local Eumundi rugby club! “I write this on Sunday evening, 20 March, having had a really super weekend away with the Eumundi Dragons. Under careful arrangement and organisation by Pamela Campbell-Jones

and Doug Toms, 15 families departed Eumundi on a Saturday morning for a three-hour trip west to Dalby. “An evening game of rugby union had been organised for the Under 12’s to play against the Dalby Wheatmen under the floodlights and a rising full moon. A ‘curtain-raiser’ of touch rugby was played by siblings of both sides before the main event began in earnest. The overall score was Dalby 32 and Eumundi 14, with both tries scored by speedy Alex and effortless conversions by Max and Louis. “It’s always enjoyable to watch our kids play rugby but it seemed even more enjoyable being in a completely new town and with such a generous and hospitable club. A sumptuous BBQ sponsored by SunPork Fresh Foods Eagle Farm ensured we all left feeling so glad we had made the trip out there. On Sunday morning we were invited back to the club for a yummy breakfast and optional farm tour exploring cotton, sorghum and mung bean crops, irrigation systems, and massive farm machinery which really topped-off a great weekend! “The Eumundi Dragons have offered to return the hospitality shown by the Dalby Wheatmen and look forward to hosting the Dalby players and their families early next year.

Accounting Solutions to Grow Your Business

“This special weekend was in addition to the Under 10’s being chosen alongside three other teams to perform the Guard of Honour for the Brisbane Reds as they played against Fiji Drua recently at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. “For a small club, in a small town, the Eumundi Dragons are making sure kids have a positive and fun experience that shapes their childhood. I truly believe all the kids will remember that weekend. Go Dragons!” Visit: www.facebook. com/eumundidragonsrugby.

Eumundi Rotary Club What is ERIL?

Rotary exchange

Eumundi Rotary Initiatives Limited (ERIL) is a company limited by guarantee and a registered not-for-profit charity. ERIL was created by and is owned by the Eumundi Rotary Club. ERIL trades as Eumundi Voice (the organisation), with the fortnightly production and distribution of Eumundi Voice (the magazine) being its current “initiative”. All profits (less operating expenses) are returned to the community, for example to assist young people to attend science camps, leadership experiences and personal growth challenges.

In 1988 I travelled from Albury NSW to Strangnas, an hour north of Stockholm in Sweden, as a Rotary Exchange student on a 12-month exchange program. It was to be a defining journey in my life and I have returned to visit my Swedish ‘parents’ and friends many times since, drawn by the wonderful memories, my love of the Swedes and desire to share my experiences with family.

ERIL has a governing Board and current Board members are: Greg Molyneux (Chairman), Les Godwin (Director and Treasurer), Tania Broadbent (Director), Greg Ison (Director) and Barbara Harvison (Director). At Leonie's Caring, we realise that individuals and families sometimes need assistance in the their daily activities to achieve their goals. Whether it's for short term or ongoing care, We're here to help!

While based in Sweden, I was fortunate to travel extensively throughout Europe with Rotary ‘buddies’ from all around the world many of whom remain dear Facebook friends to this day as we share a unique bond. I experienced Checkpoint Charlie as East and West Berlin remained separate at that time, traded cosmetics for memorabilia on the black market in Leningrad, and soaked up the rays on the surprisingly rocky and uncomfortable French and Italian Riviera beaches.

Experience Rotary Being young is an exciting time in life and these four students were full of enthusiasm sharing their experiences from some of the youth programs offered and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Eumundi. Emily Broadbent My experience was on Windeward Bound, a tall ship built in 1992 which runs youth sailing trips. My trip began in Hobart on 24 November and ended on 2 December last year. During this trip we monitored the ship on watches, set and struck different sails, learnt how to tie knots, got seasick and drank many cups of

Emily onboard Windeward Bound soupy milo. I went through this experience with 13 amazing youth crew from Tasmania and Qld and three Tasmanian Rotarians. We were guided by Captain Sarah Perry, first mate Suzie, Watch Officer Dom and our amazing watch leaders and cook. A huge personal challenge of the trip was staying organised and punctual no matter the circumstances. This was easy in the first two days of the voyage with adult guidance and it was fairly similar to what you do at home. Once day three came most crew members were physically and mentally challenged. Learning how to sail isn’t easy and while hanging over the boat with

sea sickness it is even harder. All I wanted to do was go to bed and sleep away the pain but I had to stay up and continue with my duties. This proved challenging as it’s human nature to stop when something begins to hurt, which was not encouraged and for a good reason. As one of my teachers once said, “the comfort zone is a lovely place, but nothing grows there”. This trip was not my comfort zone because I had never sailed before but I made the best new friends and learnt so much about myself! I would encourage other teenagers to do this trip because of the amazing things that come out of the experience. On Windeward Bound when

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE MARKET? “Market”, isn’t that a word to give some thought to. . The Eumundi Markets, to market a property or what’s happening as an overall in the housing market. After 18 years as a sales agent, I can tell you that last year was extraordinary, though not probably in the way you’re first thinking. It was extraordinary for all parties Buyers delighted they had secured a property in a rising market with competition, the Sellers happy as they sold at record prices & the agents sold quickly to both happy Sellers and Buyers. It was win win around and much champagne. You’ll see agents claiming ‘record prices’ in most streets, yes, it’s quite incredible how the median price has risen on average in the Eumundi Voice distribution area by 80%+ in just over 2 years. The last time this happened was in 2003/2004, I can remember that well as I’d just emigrated here from Scotland and was dismayed to see everything had nearly doubled in price. If you’d like an up-to-date appraisal on your property, or the general market, please call.

Sustainability. Collaboration. Gratitude. Fortitude. Momentum. Global Awareness. Simplicity. Staying Humble. Passion. Love. Family. These are just some of the words and sentiments that become part of one’s awareness when discovering the rhythm of life beating in the hearts of hinterland couple Matt and Geraldine Devine, founders of Bee Eco and proud stallholders at the Original Eumundi Markets. United, this couple have a driving passion to raise their five children in a world seemingly devoid of keeping things simple. Matt and Geraldine want to lead by example by showing their children that the solutions are all there within nature once you embrace that basic awareness of seeking nature as a way to deliver the answers. Bee Eco is one of the bustling businesses that can be found at the Markets, forged from a passion. The drive behind this couple was to produce handmade bee wraps with an array of exquisite, wholesome colourful designs offering a great alternative to plastic, to wrap and store food. Made with GOTS Certified organic cloth, beeswax, jojoba oil, and tree resin, it is this unique brew of natural ingredients that creates a malleable food wrap that can be used over and again! “The Eumundi Markets are such a specialty artesian market unlike anything else. To have a stall there, you either have to bake it, make it, grow it or sew it. It was in being aware that these were values that align with ours that has made our time there as stallholders so enriching for our souls” said Matt. Layla learning new skills Layla Moore The Rotary Youth Transition Seminar (RYTS) is a week-long camp for young adults who are nearing the end of their schooling experience to provide them with the right tools/skills for life in the “real world”. It covers the topics of relationships, trust, independence, spirituality, money and teamwork. I attended from 5-11 December last year and the most important thing I learnt was how to adapt to different and new situations. I learnt this by first becoming aware and accepting of the fact I am not always going to excel in every situation I face and can only ever do my best. Over my time at the camp I was pushed out of my comfort zones socially, physically and psychologically which prompted me to adapt to new situations I usually would not put myself into. I absolutely encourage other young people to do something similar to become more selfaware and self-confident, get out into the world and experience new things. Luke Cecil I attended the RYTS week-long camp at Lake Perseverance in Toowoomba. It’s all about empowering school graduates and giving them the skills and confidence to face the world. The seminar taught everything ranging from how to replace a tyre to what it means to love yourself. I found all the lessons very valuable. I found it

Luke exploring new foods very helpful to know that I don’t have to be good at everything but that anyone can do anything if they work hard enough for it! I encourage others to participate if they’re feeling unsure about life after school or want to have an incredibly fun week, meet new people and grow beyond their comfort zone. Everyone can get something out of this program. Visit: www.ryts9620.org.au.

Easter holidays is upon us and I hope you’re taking some well deserved rest, even if you’re staying at home in our beautiful town. Last week, we had a very productive meeting with our council representatives for the Eumundi Placemaking project with over 50 attendees. We all broke up into groups and provided feedback on very specific items including the pedestrian crossing, parking and the art installation to name a few. This was followed by a short Q&A.

Vanessa Carter & Rotary Youth Director Greg Molyneux Vanessa Carter Vanessa attended the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in January and had the opportunity to participate in tours of science and technology facilities, learn about cutting-edge research, engage with industry partners and research providers, learn about study options and Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) career pathways, and mix with other likeminded students from all over Australia. Vanessa also participated in sessions on entrepreneurship, critical thinking, science communications and working together effectively. She said she was very interested in STEM subjects and has hopes of being an aerospace engineer.” At the NYSF the highlight for me was to talk via video link with scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva. It was amazing.” The focus of NYSF is not solely on academic achievements but on developing well-rounded individuals who have the skills and confidence to determine their futures. Visit: www.nysf.edu. au.

We’re getting closer and it’s very exciting to see the town come together and plan for this upgrade. Every voice matters so please have your say if you haven’t already - link below. The last few Sunday’s in town have been lively with Park Sounds organised by The Imperial which has been a lot of fun to attend. We also had a special kids focused event a couple of weeks ago and as I mentioned last month, our new social media coordinator, Hayley has joined our team and if you see her around, please say hi (see pic)! This is an opportunity to walk the trail between Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona through farmlands, natural forests and spectacular hinterland lookouts. Walk at your own pace with trail guides assisting along the way. Camping is part of the experience if you wish – but you don’t have to carry anything as all your gear is collected and delivered for you. Last year GNTW donated funds to Landcare to plant trees along the walk. Visit: www.greatnoosatrailwalk.com. Ruth Hickey

Passionate about Easter Most Australians are passionate about our chocolate eggs, bunnies and bilbies especially with Cadbury celebrating 100 years in Tasmania and promising special commemorative packs and surprises this year. Consuming 4.9kg of chocolate per capita we outdo the US (4.3kg) but are well behind the Swiss at 9kg per person! Hobart, with its cool climate and excellent cows, now exports to

This year the Bavarian village of Oberammergau presents its historical Passion Play in May. First performed in 1634 it is now recreated every 10 years. The 2020 production – postponed until this year due to Covid – has the whole village participating to tell the story of Jesus from Palm Sunday until his execution as they move throughout the village fulfilling a 1633 vow to God for removing the plague. More than 2,000 local performers, musicians, technicians and organisers participate for two weeks, having grown their hair and beards over the past two years. Good Friday sees holy figures paraded through towns to remind everyone that Jesus is dead. Superstitious beliefs say that bad things can

happen to sinners on this day. All churches celebrate the resurrection on Easter Sunday with the Virgin Mary meeting her risen son. Flower petals are showered on her images and people celebrate noisily that the world is saved. The largest Easter celebration in the world is a week-long celebration in Antigua Guatemala where the community commemorates the Passion and crucifixion of Jesus. Sand and coloured sawdust are beautifully designed and laid in the streets in intricate patterns prepared for the sombre processional marchers who carry floats with large sculptures of Jesus and Mary. On Easter Sunday the city joyously celebrates the resurrection of Jesus with fireworks and feasting now that the fasting of Lent is over. Holy Week in the Philippines always captures worldwide TV attention. Passionate devotees in Manilla, Pampanga and Nueva Ecija publicly whip their backs, wear crowns of thorns and parade through streets – some on their knees – while some nail their hands and feet to a wooden cross to share Christ’s suffering. The shocking sight of heads, backs and knees dripping with blood in

the heat has been recreated for centuries and attracts huge crowds of international and local tourists and pickpockets. The Philippine Island of Marinduque particularly attracts tourists with its Moriones Festival at Easter believed to be the original festival which inspired all others. Moriones are citizens dressed in Roman and biblical period costumes and masks who march around the town for seven days searching for Longinus, the oneeyed Roman soldier who was present at the crucifixion. Moriones roam the streets in town until Easter Sunday scaring the children or behaving outrageously to draw attention. This folk-religious festival, based mainly on myth, combines many primitive and religious Philippine customs. Every town or village has its own traditions such as ‘pabasa’ – old women reciting Christ’s Passion in verse as men whip their backs or even re-enact the crucifixion. Australians, whether Christian or not, tend to celebrate according to their ancestry – or the pestering of their children wanting something chocolate wrapped in foil. Eileen Walder

On this day Hot Cross Buns For those raised in the Christian faith, hot cross buns are anchored in the symbolism of Easter and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The cross on the buns represents the crucifixion of Jesus and the spices represent those used to embalm his body. The “hot” part of the name simply comes from the fact they are best eaten hot.

Anglican monk baked buns and gave them to the poor on Good Friday. In 1592 Queen Elizabeth I banned them except at burials, Easter and Christmas. The English simply took to baking hot cross buns in their kitchens and the law became too hard to enforce. English folklore says hot cross buns hung from the rafters on Good Friday will not grow mouldy during the subsequent year. Perhaps we need to adopt that superstition to ward off the pesky mould that has appeared since our recent rain and floods!

Health

Hot cross buns are typically associated with the end of Lent but have begun appearing on supermarket shelves as early as the New Year. And they are popular – in 2017 Woolworths sold 72 million hot cross buns across Australia.

Hypnotherapy is a quick and effective way to change your mindset and have the positive relationship with chocolate, sugar and sweets that you’ve always wanted to have. As adults today we tend to buy chocolate left, right and centre and may even start eating Easter eggs in January. Come Easter time, as chocolate has become part of our daily lives, it’s not so special anymore. Often people wish to reduce or eliminate their chocolate or sugar intake, perhaps to lose weight or simply because they feel they are ‘out of control’. When we take back control and take the time to savour and enjoy what we have, we also take back our enjoyment – that is the secret.

follow-up the options presented on only the first page or so. This reality poses a problem for small business – how can you make your website stand out from the rest and appear on the front page of Google search results? The answer lies in search engine optimisation (SEO).

Most importantly ensure your website is visually attractive and well organised with information about the key aspects of your business (e.g. contact details, services) visible in a way that makes sense to potential customers. To understand SEO it is helpful to know how search engines rank the results of searches. They principally do two jobs. The first involves ‘indexing’ your website pages, working out what is in your site by the words that are used prominently. They also look at how much the rest of the internet cares about your website by reviewing how many other websites feature links to yours. So how can you use this information?

Think carefully about the words you use in your website URL, headings, and titles. Ask yourself what words you (or your customers who know nothing about you) would type into a search engine if looking to find a certain business in your local area or region. Do these words bring up competitor websites? If so, review how you can incorporate these words more prominently on your website. Finally, consider how you can get others to promote your website by adding backlinks to their pages. The more popular and relevant the other website is, the better. Create a business profile with the most popular search engines such as Google Business as this will help customers search for your business on the web, find contact details and even leave reviews. Invest some time this Easter into thinking how your website can be improved and you may see your business climbing up the search engine rankings in leaps and bounds!
