A new window for Eumundi

Eumundi Museum has been under renovation for almost two years – Covid and the incessant rain have not helped – but it will partially reopen on 31 May. The beautiful old church hall displaying the history of Eumundi will once again be open to the public. The front portico that greets everyone travelling along Memorial Dr was itself a renovation as it dated back to the late 1950s. The addition includes nine stained-glass windows which have been adored by museum visitors over the past quarter of a century. As part the museum’s renovations these have been restored by Sunshine Coast stained-glass professionals Bello Vetro. Once a stallholder at

the Original Eumundi Markets, Craig now runs this leadlight business with his son Dale. Their work has made the front windows stronger and brighter than ever. Perhaps even more exciting was the discovery of an arch above the front door of the original building from 1911. This was unknown until asbestos walls were removed in 2021 as part of the renovation. Museum director Joe Hextall suggested a stained-glass tree reminiscent of the town’s memorial trees and the logo of the Eumundi Historical Association which owns and operates the museum. It now displays a delightful sapling created by Bello Vetro and the museum welcomes you to come and admire it in person.

manager while Karen was a stay-at-home mum. With recent Covid issues and border closures they began the “bring daddy home” campaign and the idea for a local Tiki Bar was formed. The Tiki Bar is at the top of The Pavilion 79 Memorial Dr Eumundi. There is such a lovely atmosphere allowing everyone to chat and meet locals and travellers in a casual area within the new Pavilion – complete with parking on the top level.

Eumundi’s Tiki Bar In 2010 Jon and Karen Selkirk and their beautiful dog Bella moved from Yorkshire in their original 1961 split-screen Kombi van to have an Australian adventure. For the best part of a year they travelled and ended up in Qld, deciding this was the place to have the best of both worlds – the beach and the hinterland. They were looking for an old Queenslander, a good school and great pubs and the Eumundi area fitted the bill. They purchased 67 acres at Eerwah Vale and now have goats, cattle, chickens and large veggie gardens. At their poolside they built a small Tiki Bar which provided inspiration for their new business. Jon and Karen and their children, Oliver (8) and Charlotte (5), have now lived in the Eumundi community for seven years. Jon was previously a fly-in-fly-out oil and gas offshore installation

Community Classic car display 2021

Noosa Beach Classic Car Club The Noosa Beach Classic Car Club (NBCCC) is proud to have reversed the general trend of declining community club membership, adding an additional 30 new members this year to a total membership of 530 including 230 female co-members. The success of this organisation lies in its 34 years of historical community confidence. A management team of 14 regularly meets to create, discuss and action a diverse range of activities and events such as a visit to a motor museum or specialist auto workshop, or a group scenic hinterland drive to a coffee or lunch destination. No man is an island – an old poem against isolationism – is still so true today. The strength and community recognition of the club rests with its capacity to organise three major auto events annually. The two Hill Climb Motorsport events in June and October celebrate 25 years of racing up the hill and the prestigious Classic Car Show in July celebrates 34 years of continuity. So what are you waiting for? No matter what your car, a true ‘classic’ lies in the heart and mind of a proud and passionate owner. Join us: www. noosacarclub.com.au. Kate Rider NBCCC Inc.

HumDrum update Following a disastrous fire in the early hours of 12 January 2022, the building’s owner has given a brief update. The official investigation established the cause of the fire to be an air-conditioning plant. With that issue settled, the owners received an insurance payment and plan to rebuild as soon as possible. Council requires completion of compliance documentation for the previous renovation prior to demolition of the ruined building which is hoped to occur in June, so, look out for changes to the site. Meanwhile you can grab a HumDrum coffee from just across the street.

Living in the decarb decade The popular Noosa EV Expo is on Sunday 19 June and the theme of this year’s event is Living in the Decarb Decade. Coordinator Vivien Griffin explained that decarb is not short for the latest diet but for the decarbonisation of everything – which must happen in the decade to 2030. “This year the Expo is taking over the entire main street of Noosa Junction, which is a big change from our humble beginnings,” said Vivien. “The Expo showcases the amazing transformations in sustainable transport options. Yes, we will showcase electric cars, but we will also celebrate e-bikes, e-scooters, mopeds, motorbikes, trucks, buses and even electric racing cars. Add to that a speakers’ forum, buskers, a face painter for children, trial e-bike and e-scooter rides on a great course, and tasty cafe food. “The electric car market has definitely expanded beyond Teslas, although these are still the largest selling brand in the market. The overall 2021 sales figures have seen a massive growth in electric car sales which nearly tripled over 2020, going from 6,900 to 20,665. Sadly, the figures could have been even higher as demand for electric vehicles by Australian drivers far

outstrips the capacity of distributors to supply vehicles. There needs to be major policy initiatives at the Federal Government level if we are to reduce transport emissions and meet this demand.” Vivien explained about subsidised car purchases. “Recently the Qld Government announced a $3,000 subsidy on vehicles priced under $58,000 and Expo visitors will be able to check out at least four of the six models which comply with this requirement including MG, Ioniq, Leaf and Kona. Our speakers’ forum is also a great opportunity to ask questions from a terrific lineup of innovators with practical experience as change agents.” “People ask about recycling EV batteries and it is encouraging to see developments in this space,” said Vivien. “The Australian Battery Recycling Initiative (ABRI) is exploring the best ways to recycle electric vehicle batteries and a company in Melbourne called Ecobatt is already recycling batteries.” The Expo is proudly supported by Noosa Council and Noosa Junction Association. Is solar worth it? Part 3 There are two ways a home solar system can offer financial benefits. Using the energy produced by your solar system to run appliances reduces the amount of power you buy from the grid. The optimum way to save is by using appliances during the day when your solar system is operating. Any power from your solar system that you don’t use can be sold to the national grid. The amount you feed-in, and the feed-in tariff your power provider pays you, will determine how much you can save on your power bill.

14

To determine whether installing solar for your home is worthwhile, look at the cost of the system and how long it takes to break even. In Qld an average home with a $5,000 system and a standard feed-in tariff of 5c per kilowatt takes around five years to break even. This can be reduced if your usage is below average or you negotiate a higher rate for the feed-in tariff. For most homes the installation is 6.6kW of panels with a 5kW inverter. The only limitations are your budget, the number of panels your roof can fit and what your provider allows you to install. Get multiple quotes to look for the best value as there may be a large price difference between installers. Do your research. Sales reps may say you need your system serviced every two years whereas the standard requirement for most systems is every five years. Look for a 10-year warranty for your inverter, 12 years for your panels and 5 years for the workmanship in installing the system. Make sure the warranty is covered by an Australian insurer and not a Chinese or other manufacturer. Today’s solar panel efficiencies mean you only lose 10-15% power production for not having a north-facing roof space so it is still worth considering the investment. Most homes can have the system pay for itself within two to five years and it should increase the value of your house as well as contribute to reducing your carbon footprint. Greg Ison

Give a sheet! Noosa Shire Council asks all households to ‘give a sheet’ on World Environment Day 5 June as a huge gesture towards recycling some of the one million tonnes of textile waste Australians put into landfill each year. From 8am-3pm you can donate clean, dry unwanted linen such as sheets, duvet covers, pillowslips, tea towels, left-over dressmaking materials or clothing into designated bins at the Bicentennial Hall carpark with the first 100 donors receiving a tree to take home courtesy of Landcare. All suitable, clean clothing will be donated to St Vincent’s so please separate wearable clothing from other material donations. Cr Joe Jurisevic

said, “Donated items will be converted into highgrade materials by BlockTexx which Australian manufacturers will make into new products such as hydro-mulch, shopping baskets and geosynthetic fabrics.” Australia’s first textile resource recovery facility by world-leading clean technology company BlockTexx will open shortly in Logan. Its separation of fibre technology process turns polyester and cotton blended fabric into high quality recycled PET pellets and natural cellulose powder to be used to manufacture new items. One kilogram of unwanted textile waste processed by BlockTexx is equivalent to 30kgs of CO2 emissions. Based on EPA NSW figures, just one truckload of linen collected would divert ten tonnes of textile waste from landfill and remove carbon emissions equivalent to taking 65 cars off the road for a year. Australia is the second highest consumer of textiles per person in the world after the USA, averaging 27kg of new clothing per person annually. University of Qld research claims on average each person discards around 23kg of clothing to landfill each year. The clothing industry contributes up to 5% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined (WEF 2021). By 2030 global textile waste is predicted to hit 140 million tonnes. Do your bit to reduce this waste. Eileen Walder 15

Easter Cassia is not listed as a priority invasive plant under the Sunshine Coast Local Government Biosecurity Plan or the Biosecurity Act 2014. However, by law, everyone has a general biosecurity obligation (GBO) to take reasonable and practical steps to minimise the risks associated with invasive plants and animals under their control. Visit: www.bit.ly/3PEWV6r. Download a brochure: www.bit.ly/38946Tz.

Easter Cassia Easter Cassia Senna pendula is in bloom everywhere along the roadsides of Eumundi Range Rd and Eumundi Noosa Rd. It might look pretty but it is a successful invader, scrambling over other plants and into the canopy. In the past it has been the focus of local eradication programs due to the risk of invading natural treed areas. SCC advises: “Easter Cassia can currently be seen across the Sunshine Coast as the plant produces a lot of seeds and its fast growth rate allows it to out-compete and smother native vegetation. Removing it will reduce the risk of it spreading from your property into natural areas. Easter Cassia can be cut at the base and herbicide applied to the stump or it can be removed with a tree popper.”

Reader’s photo Eumundi Voice reader Joan sent in a photo of her Cymbidium orchid, received as a gift over 30 years ago. “It flowers every year and I have taken many root cuttings and given to friends so the joy is shared.”

(From L) Barbara Harvison, Gabby Fletcher, Lynda Zahovskis, Mark Bradley, Tom Rumble, Tennille Will, Pam Moffat

Two reasons for morning tea Blue skies came as a most welcome break from the relentless grey clouds and rain for Eumundi’s Rotary Club morning tea last week in the bright balcony setting of The Pavilion, Memorial Dr. Event organiser Pam Moffat explained the event was “for not one, but two very good reasons”. Raising funds for the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning tea was the first reason for a wonderful array of home-baked creations. Cancer survivors Mark Bradley and Lynda Zahovskis shared their stories of the shock of the diagnosis and

the support of family and oncologists. Both emphasised they “wouldn’t be here” except for scientific research which identified and developed their treatments. They encourage everyone to contribute to research through donations to the Cancer Council. Mark explained how immunotherapy, utilising “immune checkpoint inhibitors” which are a “major breakthrough in cancer therapy and changing the prospects of a cure” was the reason he is “still here” with his family after four years. He was the first of 20 to undergo this front-line treatment at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. It was sheer luck he heard about the treatment on TV and his oncologist was able to get him included. “It was literally a life-saver for me.” Lynda shared her journey through her 2014 breast cancer diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy and how she is now in remission. She told of initial denial: “I was 42 and superfit. It can’t be me, it’s just a cyst, all I need is a quick and easy fix.” She also suffered self-doubt: “Did I drink too much wine? Did I exercise too much?” Linda said she was “grateful the research had improved the treatment protocol so I can be here today”. The second reason for the morning tea was to celebrate local businesses. Pre-Covid Eumundi Rotary held Pride of Work events to recognise the outstanding workplace achievements of owners and workers across a range of services in and around Eumundi. After the negative pressures on businesses during Covid – which continue today – it was time to share two good news stories. Gabby Fletcher, manager of the family-run The Pavilion, shared how they took on the project of

Pam Moffat transforming a long-term stallholder building into an attractive venue with a diverse selection of shops. Local identity tenants Tina the barber and Phil the masseur are now joined by outlets offering cocktails, acupuncture, beauty treatments, eclectic home furnishings and dog grooming. A multipurpose area is available to hold meetings, workshops and yoga classes. Tom Rumble, the manager and owner of Eumundi Coffee Co. in Memorial Dr, shared his story of small beginnings at The Store and meeting the challenge to develop a coffee roasting business, confirmed during a research

trip to Brazil. The success story included creating a blend distributed from Brisbane to Emerald and a locale which is “a perfect blend of artisan coffee, music and community” with a morning rush that’s “four hours long”. Thank you for generous donations from Dan Purdie MP Ninderry (financial support), Cr David Law (trees), and for the raffles Eumundi Style, Eumundi Pharmacy and Tennille’s Beauty Salon. Thanks also to Jackie and Barry of Flash Jack for music, Gabby for The Pavilion venue and Rotary and community members for providing morning tea and decorations. Ruth Hickey

WHATEVER THE WEATHER Coming from Scotland, I’m used to the rain, but the last few weeks have brought on a little nostalgia. In those days, if it was pouring, we’d throw a blanket over the horse and still ride and wet weather was always about wearing head to toe waterproofs and hitting the golf course. Luckily most of the Hinterland buyers I’ve met over the past few weeks have done similar, recognising that our wet spells are a part of living in this beautiful area and sometimes the greenness of acreage absolutely pops with beauty after or in the rain. If you’re thinking of selling your home, I’ll be there, rain or shine. Umbrellas for buyers, doormats to protect the floors. Contact me today to see how I can help you sell. Whatever the weather.

Dreams

When researchers claim we need at least seven hours a night for our health and wellbeing, we may be a little challenged. Less than the seven hours can result in psychological and mental problems or even premature death. What happens if your sleep is disturbed by violent or frightening dreams? Even though we forget details we actually dream up to four hours a night. Animals and birds also dream, sometimes quite vividly, which affects their mood swings on waking just like us. So are the 25 years of our lives spent dreaming wasted?

To sleep, perchance to dream Living in the hinterland means trying to sleep through the dawn chorus of birds who are totally focused on celebrating that they got through the night and are greeting the dawn of another day in riotous song.

There are five components to a healthy night’s sleep. Firstly, consciousness to light sleep takes around 10 minutes. If you fall asleep within five minutes you are sleep deprived. The body relaxes in the second stage as its temperature drops and breathing becomes regular, leading into the restorative period which generally becomes the deep sleep time. Next it is REM time when Rapid Eye Movements show our brain is active and dreams occur. These stages can repeat several times especially if you are a ‘biphasic sleeper’ who regularly wakes each night for a while with

bodily needs or to escape a bad dream. Research shows that dreaming in colour increased substantially since the arrival of colour television. Even blind people dream vividly with the senses of sound, touch and smell replacing vision. In ‘lucid dreaming’ we realise we are asleep and can control what is happening or wake ourselves up if it is disturbing. ‘Repetitious dreams’ are psychological reminders of tasks to be done or a stressful event is coming. ‘Precognitive dreams’ recall places and people from the past or may give a glimpse of the future. The death or illness of a loved one is sometimes forewarned in a dream and connects with a sense of ‘deja-vu’ when you visit a new place or meet a person who seems familiar. Some novelists, scientists and researchers say they dreamt their solutions or best ideas. Researchers claim most dreams are negative and arouse anger, anxiety or stress, especially when we are in danger or rescuing a pet or loved one. However 60% of dreams are forgotten within five minutes of waking. The meaning of dreams is controversial but generally ‘falling’ implies you need to let go of things holding you back. Being naked in public may mean you are insecure about how others see you or you fear being ‘caught out’. Being chased could relate to a suppressed childhood experience. Small Business – the backbone of our economy May is Small Business month, and there’s no better time to be showcasing the diversity of small and family-owned businesses that are operating in our backyard. Recently, I launched a new campaign to help put the spotlight on some of these businesses. The centrepiece of the ‘Supporting Local’ campaign is a hamper stocked entirely with locally made goods, including: • Environmentally friendly cleaning products from The Pleasant State and Go for Zero • Handmade soap and bath bombs from The Soap Bar • Selection of teas and spices from Planet Organic • Popcorn from Sweet Az Popcorn • Longlife meat alternatives from Veff by Fenn Foods • Pasta, couscous and risotto mixes from Belladotti • Coffee from Flying West Roasters • Craft beer from Eumundi Brewery These hampers are being donated to local charities and groups to help them with their fundraising efforts. If you know a local not-for-profit that could benefit from one of these proudly local hampers, get in touch. Gambling Grant super round If you are part of a community club or group that has been impacted by a natural disaster in the past 2 years, you are encouraged to apply for a grant of up to $100,000 in the Gambling Community Benefit Fund’s super-sized Disaster Recovery Round. This round is open now, with applications closing on 15 July. Applications from non-affected groups are still welcome in this round, with grants capped at $35,000. International Burger Day It’s International Burger Day on 28 May – so what is the burger culture at your house? Hasty tasty or haute cuisine? My husband is very precise with our home-made burgers. Firstly the lower bun is toasted and topped with a well-cooked mince beef patty, then tomato sauce on the meat, sliced tomato with salt, a big circle of sliced beetroot perched precariously, chopped lettuce sort of dribbled over, and topped with a toasted half bun. It is not appreciated if this order is wrong. A favourite thing to include is a fried egg … not too runny or disaster awaits! Some enjoy a sweet pineapple ring, American influenced pickles and cheese or fried onion. Coleslaw slathered in loads of mayonnaise and BBQ sauce are options and if you are going for ‘the lot’ bacon is essential. The humble Aussie burger has even made it to the heights of Gourmet Traveller magazine with an entire article waxing lyrical. “The sensation of wandering up from the beach, sun-kissed and salty, ordering from the kiosk and having beetroot juice run down both arms is as familiar

Tips for home-made patties Home-made beef patties are a great excuse to get your fingers all squishy and ikky. I think the secret is to use your hands to bind it all together. Kids adore it. Use good quality beef mince but depending on the type of mince, sometimes you need to add some breadcrumbs to soak up the fat. Add a dash or two of Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce or cayenne pepper. Salt ‘n’ pepper of course. Crumbled stock cube is an option. Use egg to bind it together. Some folks add grated carrot or finely chopped onion or parsley to add bulk. If the patties are a little wet add a bit of plain flour. You can pop them in the fridge to set which makes cooking easier. Find your balance between thick-andjuicy and thin-and-quicker cooking. During cooking press the middle to make sure they are cooked all the way through. Burgerlicious!

Disability sport More than 200 disability sports industry professionals will join the inaugural Sunshine Coast Sports Symposium at the University of Sunshine Coast (USC) from 15-17 June. Presented by Disability Sports Australia and proudly supported by SCC and USC, the National Disability Sports Conference will bring together leaders in sport, disability, education, allied health, government and the community. They will discuss the importance of collaboration to break down the barriers to sport and physical activity participation by Australians with disabilities. Australian Sports Commission CEO Kieren Perkins OAM is a keynote speaker at the conference. SCC Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said hosting the national conference would be a real opportunity to connect and create conversations to influence all levels of government and enhance council’s ongoing plans to enable more people with a disability to be more active, more often.

It’s about the team The Noosa Netball Association has celebrated the opening fixture of the season with a parade featuring the Noosa Pipe Band and the first round of the season’s junior Saturday competition. This opening event was made possible by dedicated volunteers committed to their associations and clubs. They were rewarded with the pleasure of watching the children march and follow in their own footsteps with the hope they will carry on these traditions.

The sacrifice made by the netball volunteers and families cannot be rationalised by any test. The only measure is the joy the opening of the season brings to so many young people and their supporters. For more information visit: www.noosanetballassociation.com. What makes a website ‘pop’? Planning the design of your business website Did you notice the Eumundi Voice website has just had a refresh? So what considerations are important when planning the design of a new website? Choosing the right colour palette is one of the first and most important aspects to consider as colours have the power to provoke emotion.

Custom designed, responsive

WEBSITES SMALL BUSINESS

As a result you can shape how your visitors feel about your website and business simply by thinking carefully about the colour palette used in your design. For example, in the recent redesign of the Eumundi Voice website, green and white were chosen as the primary colours. Green implies freshness and nature while white implies cleanliness and user-friendliness. Blue is the most common favourite colour for both men and women and is used in advertising to project dependability and reassurance while purple, a royal colour, implies quality or a distinguished brand. The choice of colours can also create brand recognition so ensuring that the colour scheme selected is consistent with your logos and other branding helps to further establish your business identity. The font family – for example Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica – selected for your website can determine whether the content on your website is easy to read or not. Different fonts can be used for different purposes such as headings, body and button text, but this should generally be limited to one or two different fonts. Sansserif fonts, those lacking small decorate strokes that protrude from the main body of a letter, are generally recommended for bodies of text. It is usually also advised not to use ‘all caps’ to emphasise text as bolding text is more visually pleasing to a reader. Visit the new Eumundi Voice website at: www. eumundivoice.com.au.

Please don’t get angry with people who believe your blinker! Q: When should you indicate your intention on a roundabout? A: When you are planning to exit the roundabout. Many drivers are not indicating their intention to leave a roundabout but do indicate their intention to go on it. Well, we know that already because they are on it – but just when they are going to get off is anyone’s guess. Case in point – the Beckmans Rd roundabout on Eumundi-Noosa Rd which should be avoided at tradie/school times. If you are leaving Noosa and going to Eumundi, look out for cars coming out of Beckmans. The ones going into Noosa have exited but you should watch the ones still coming with their right blinker on. Are they going back to Beckmans as they are indicating? Mostly

not! They are going to Eumundi despite telling you they are continuing around the roundabout. If you believe that right blinker they will cut in front of you or honk from behind. The only obligation to use a blinker on a roundabout is to indicate you are leaving. Because so many do not do this, drivers are now indicating they are staying on the roundabout so there are blinkers going right and left. Unfortunately the right blinker is often not switched to left soon enough. This problem is escalating and it may not be long before roundabouts slow traffic rather than keep it flowing. We need to indicate where we are going in sufficient time so others don’t have to second guess. Before leaning on your horn, work out if perhaps you sent that pesky “pusher inner” the wrong message. Blinky Bill, Doonan

Health Did you hear the news? Noosa Hearing will open an audiology clinic in partnership with Ochre Health in Etheridge St Eumundi on 27 May. The business is 100% locally owned and operated. “We thought it was time the Eumundi community had access to accurate, diagnostic hearing services as well as care and compassion from an independent hearing clinic,” said Dee (Deidre) Breytenbach Eumundi’s local audiologist. “Not many people are aware of the Hearing Services Program (HSP) run by the Health Department,” said Dee. “Noosa Hearing is government accredited to provide all hearing services under this service. If you have a pension card or DVA card you could be eligible for generous subsidies from the Federal Government.” Dee explained: “The HSP operates on a voucher system that lasts for five years. During that time you get your initial hearing test for free,

with annual check-ups included to monitor your hearing health. If you do require hearing aids the government will subsidise you to around $1500 towards a new pair of digital hearing devices. These can connect to your mobile device giving you greater flexibility.” “Hearing loss often creeps up and you don’t realise you have it. It can start with listening behaviour, such as noticing you’re struggling in a noisy environment,” said Dee. Other indicators can be “speech articulation, literacy problems or a reduced ability to spontaneously participate in conversation”. This can increase the risk of “social withdrawal, poor mental health and cognitive decline”. There are also important links between hearing loss and dementia. Visit: www. bit.ly/3MHVaUg. Legal

Despite the name, an attorney appointed under an EPOA does not need legal training. The most important factor is that the person is someone you trust to act in your best interests. Your attorney will have access to all of your finances and the ability to make decisions affecting your healthcare. I’d strongly recommend choosing a person who is organised and not averse to paperwork. Your attorney must be over 18 and cannot be a paid carer, but a Centrelink Carer’s Allowance is acceptable. A Public Trustee could be appointed to manage your financial affairs, for a fee, but not your personal or health matters.

Personal legal documents Choosing an attorney In this article we take a step back and look at the issue from the perspective of someone making an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPOA). Whom should you appoint as your attorney?

You can appoint the same person to be your attorney for both financial and personal/health matters. Or you can appoint one person to manage your finances and another to manage personal/health matters. Another option is to have more than one attorney responsible for financial matters and/or personal healthcare. Think carefully about the practicalities if appointing more than one attorney. Consider

whether you want them to act jointly or whether one can make decisions alone (described on the EPOA form as “severally”). If jointly, two signatures or the presence of both may be required each time a financial transaction takes place or a health matter decided. If the same attorney is to manage both finances and healthcare, or only financial, or only personal matters, the ‘short form’ EPOA applies. Otherwise you will need the ‘long form’ EPOA. Visit: www.publications.qld.gov.au or you could consult a solicitor. You may have heard of a General Power of Attorney. That applies to financial matters only and is more limited than an EPOA. Its authority doesn’t continue should the principal lose decision-making capacity. It’s more for shortterm needs such as selling your house while you are overseas and want someone local to manage the sale. It’s less common than an EPOA. Visit: www.bit.ly/3Gd7dq7. Rhonda Piggott
