Eumundi supermarket

Known locally as the “old strawberry farm” the site at the southern entrance to Eumundi – bounded by Memorial Dr and Eumundi Noosa Rd – has already been approved by Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) for a 4,293 sqm service station. Altum Property Group’s application to SCC for a Material Change of Use (MCU) is seeking approval for a retail development with a 1,200 sqm supermarket and 272 sqm speciality retail with parking for 72 cars. The MCU is close to the end of the Public Notification Stage and individuals have an opportunity to formally register with council their views for or against by 24 July. To express

your support or concerns email SCC at: mail@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and include the MCU Application number MCU22/0052. Explain your reasons and include your name and address. You do not have to be a local resident to comment. Development Director for Altum, Alex Rigby said the response from the community over the past four months has been overwhelmingly positive. “Eumundi residents and people who live in the catchment area have identified the benefits to locals of less travel for a full-range supermarket. Other benefits cited are the 72 carparks available for family shopping and the potential for an increase in employment opportunities. Cont. p3

Rob McCready & family at Verrierdale Cont. from p1 “We are confident that council will see the need for this development as our application demonstrates there is insufficient developable land within the Eumundi local centre to accommodate the proposed development and strong community and economic need.”

Award-winning local architecture firm Blackburne Jackson has created a low-rise building design with a maximum height above finished ground level of around 6.5m and setback 6m from the street frontages to minimise the building profile.

Verrierdale resident and Altum Construction Director Rob McCready said, “I expect a response from SCC to the application by September this year and if approved it will be a very busy 2023 with construction work. There is an extra element of excitement for our family at the prospect of my directing the construction of our local supermarket having lived most of my life on the Sunny Coast”. The Altum information booklet is on display and available for viewing at 20 Eumundi main street businesses. Visit: www.altum.com.au/ eumundidevelopment for further information.

Sunshine Sounds Festival Eumundi Showgrounds is the place to be on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 July for the Sunshine Sounds Festival, an all-ages family friendly music festival with an amazing line-up of artists. The Friday program will feature four Eumundi School of Rock bands live on the big stage. The Saturday program includes our Sunshine Sounds Community Choir where festival-goers can join in singing this year’s choir song The Dead Heart by Midnight Oil. A final pre-festival choir rehearsal will be held at the Eumundi CWA Hall on July 24 for those keen to get involved. Tyrone Noonan told Eumundi Voice that Eumundi is the perfect location for Sunshine Sounds. “Everyone who knows Eumundi is aware that it’s the only place to be at all times, whether it’s ‘Yer Mundi, ‘Yer Tuesdi’, or any other day of the week! All jokes aside, Eumundi is a very special community – of which my sister is a proud member – that offers the perfect energy for a family-friendly festival like this, celebrating beautiful music from around the country and of course the great new talent from Eumundi School of Rock.” 4

Katie and Tyrone Noonan

This year is the 20th anniversary of Polyserena debut album and as part of the celebration Tyrone recounted how it all started. “It brings me right back to Bardon in the mid-90s. I’d been back In Brisbane for a while having lived in the UK and Ireland for a few years and at the time I was more interested in DJing and nightclubs, fusing these concepts with traditional music and art, and I thought my time with bands was done. Then my mate Andy Bagley helped me procure a Wurlitzer electric piano and suddenly I wanted to jam again. I knew my sister was having back deck hippie jams at her drop-in centre in Bardon and that was where the band that became George formed its roots.” Gates open at 4.30pm on Friday with Welcome to Country and music from 5–10pm. On Saturday gates open 11am with Welcome to Country and music from 11.30am–10pm. Sunshine Sounds Festival is possible thanks to the generous support of major sponsors SCC and Visit Sunshine Coast, along with key sponsors Regional Arts Australia and Flying Arts, The Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery, Eumundi Community and District Association (EDCA) and Experience Eumundi. Share our heritage SCC is asking residents to take a trip down memory lane and dig-out old photographs for the 2023 On the Move: How we travelled the Sunshine Coast heritage calendar competition from 15 July to 15 August. The calendar will capture the various ways we travelled the region – from the back of trucks, bicycles made for two, cars, skates, boats, trams and trains, even horse and cart or pennyfarthing! “With photos and films one person’s trash is potentially the community’s treasure and old photos and film can help us piece together and preserve our Sunshine Coast story,” said SCC Community Portfolio Cr Rick Baberowski. Winning entries will be included in the 2023 calendar on sale at libraries and customer contact centres from October. Winners receive a canvas print of their image, a VIP invitation to the calendar launch and five calendars to share. Visit: www.heritage.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Preparations are well advanced for the program of visual arts, music, theatre, dance, words and ideas, film and creative workshops designed to celebrate home-grown and global artists. First presented by SCC in 2016 Horizon Festival is a key event in the Sunshine Coast Arts Plan 20182038 guided by council’s Arts Advisory Board. Another member is Aunty Helena Gulash, a Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) Elder who brings strategic leadership experience from her extensive work in First Nations affairs. She focuses on the potential for the dynamic Indigenous Arts and cultural industry to stimulate positive change for First Nations peoples. Horizon Festival Director Hannah Clissold said, “There will be 52 unique events, 25 locations and 543 artists, facilitators and community participants with more than half of the artists residents of the Sunshine Coast. The festival is committed to investing in local artists and presenting an inclusive and accessible program that welcomes visitors of all ages, focusing on Kabi Kabi and Jinibara artists.”

Twenty-one students and their parents joined forces with Coolum and North Shore Coastcare volunteers to help restore the Yaroomba Beach dunes and collect rubbish on Monday 27 June. They arrived with gardening gloves and Coastcare volunteers provided digging tools, native plants, buckets of water crystals and beach clean-up bags.

In just two hours 50 native plants including Coast Banksia, Beach Birdseye and Pig Face were planted. Weeds such as Corky Passion Vine, Mother of Millions and Mile-a-Minute were removed along with a large bag of polystyrene, hard plastics, chip packets, bottle caps and drinking straws. “It’s been great to see our students working collaboratively alongside passionate and knowledgeable Coastcare volunteers to manage coastal habitat,” said Vickie. “The students will use the rubbish in a creative way to show how long it would take to break down in the ocean.”

Artwork adorns Cooroy RSL An amazing three-part mural on the back wall of the Cooroy RSL is an exciting addition to the art installations around town. The murals reflect significant parts of Cooroy including the Mountain and possums, as the town derives its name from the Gubbi Gubbi word for possum. Poppies represent the RSL and veterans and acknowledge the service of armed forces personnel. General Manager Helen Hollingworth said, “We planned to beautify the area at the rear of the club particularly as this is the view seen from the railway and east side of town. We wanted something that spoke of the different aspects of Cooroy while also providing a great visual”. The work was completed by travelling mural artist NITSUA, aka Austin, who finished murals at Cooroy State School last year. one item, a shopping trolley, was found half Environment and nature but buried in deep sand. Bushcare volunteers dug it out, cleaned it up and returned it to its rightful home at Seasons IGA Yandina.

Yandina Bushcare volunteers Bushcare volunteers battle more than weeds on the South Maroochy River as recent flooding has scattered extensive debris and wreckage not only on Sunshine Coast beaches but also on the banks of rivers and creeks. During a recent SCC Bushcare Working Bee on the banks of the South Maroochy River at Yandina, volunteers recovered items of clothing, tarpaulins, tents, garden chairs and car parts, much of it tangled in trees metres above the usual river level. This debris was taken to landfill

Debris from flooding and carelessly dumped rubbish diminishes the value of these precious heritage sites. Our river is a national living treasure. Although it takes up time that could have been better spent on revegetation, Bushcare volunteers accept that cleaning up flood debris and carelessly dumped rubbish is part of their brief. New volunteers are always welcome. The Christina Low Park Bushcare Group meets at 8:30am on the third Tuesday of each month near the pedestrian bridge at the end of Old Cobb & Co Lane followed by a cuppa! Work is supervised by a qualified council officer who provides equipment and training on safe and effective environmental restoration and care. Audienne Blyth, Christina Low Park Bushcare Group

HAVE HOUSE PRICES FALLEN? That’s the question most buyers have asked me in the past two weeks. And it’s mainly because of negative press and the fear of over paying if the market does drop. Well, we aren’t seeing rises unless a property has been totally renovated, and new listings are certainly coming on more competitively priced. For buyers who have had great income as a result of Covid, they are still keen to secure a mortgage based on their recent books and aren’t daunted by the impended mortgage rate rises. And let’s face it, it’s still cheap to borrow money, ask anyone who paid 17% back in the days. For properties that meet specific buyer demands, for example the ability to keep horses, have dual living or the property has a view, or is within a certain school catchment, there is still above average enquiry, mainly from Sydney buyers. How would I consider the market. Back to normal!

This is a truly historic moment for the Sunshine Coast and our division. After years in the making this prestigious designation will help us protect and enhance our region, communities, economy and natural environment for future generations. Being a biosphere has a range of benefits particularly for our tourism and agriculture industries. Our region has the potential to become a magnet for others around the world who want to buy from and visit a region that focuses on sustainability. Councillor Div 10 - Cr David Law In Conversation Renowned for tackling big issues, Venue 114’s signature In Conversation event is set to spark powerful dialogue. In Conversation – Becoming Anti-Racist will feature former Socceroo’s captain, award-winning broadcaster, Member of Australian Multicultural Council and Human Rights activist Craig Foster AM as a special guest on Friday 22 July. In Conversation events were founded on a passion to educate, engage and empower our community, sow seeds of thought and invite growth. We’re proud to welcome leaders in the field of positive action and social harmony. In Conversation provides the ideal stage to facilitate a conversation about what it means to be anti-racist as an individual and a society. Racism has no place on the Sunshine Coast. All forms of racism are deeply hurtful and damaging to individuals and communities. We are committed to creating a strong community that is connected, inclusive and cohesive.

truly means when money is involved. The cast includes local actors Zoe Griffen, Jo Hendrie, Frank Wilkie, Patrick Reed, Yannick Marot, Sepi Burgiani, Rebecca Munasinghe and Jackson O’Sullivan.

David Williamson with his two sons, Felix and Rory

Money and Friends Having Australia’s most prolific playwright David Williamson as patron of Noosa Arts Theatre is a huge plus for local audiences especially when a production involves not one, but both of his sons. After last year’s sell-out success Up for Grabs, Rory Williamson again directs and brother Felix stars in Money and Friends which broke box office records around the world when first staged in the 90s. The plot involves a group of friends in fictional Crystal Inlet assessing just what ‘friendship’

Both NIDA graduates, Rory is a very familiar face at Noosa Arts Theatre as a director and actor and Felix appeared as Paul Keating in the miniseries Hawke. His extensive career includes TV series such as Underbelly, Wentworth and Rake along with productions at the Sydney Theatre Company, Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre, Bell Shakespeare and South Australian State Theatre. The play contains adult themes and content so if easily offended, be warned. Performances are 21 July -13 August. Tickets: www.noosaartstheatre. org.au or phone 07 5449 9343. Felix will also host two inspiring masterclasses on Monday 1 and 8 August from 4-9.30pm for actors and directors. This is a rare opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s finest actors, directors and NIDA teachers. Cost is $85 including supper. Places are limited. Book: www.noosaartstheatre. org. intern program with Qld Theatre introduced her to other aspects of theatre from pitching play ideas to gaining funds to promote shows. Sienna played Maria in The Sound of Music for Sunshine Coast Youth Theatre (SCYT) and will play Serena Katz in FAME (purple cast) in September for Little Seed Theatre Company. After success at the recent regional championships she will compete at the State Glee Championships in July – and perhaps the national finals. Sienna’s story started when her theatrical family moved to Norfolk Island and her babysitter discovered her six-month-old charge could hold pitch perfect notes. Numerous productions featured the blossoming star including as Becky in The Polar Express and regular RSL gigs with her father Brandt. Sienna won best youth songwriter in 2015 and every singing, dance and drama section of the annual Mother’s Day talent quests from 2011 to 2017 until the family returned to the Sunshine Coast settling at Weyba Downs. Sienna has performed with many local theatre companies who appreciate her passion for musical theatre, singing, songwriting and storytelling, her deep respect for acting and understanding the psychology of her characters. She has performed in Wicked for Little Seed Theatre Company, Born to Fly concert at the Performing Arts Factory and as solo artist at the Doonan carols. In 2019 she played Belle in Beauty and the Beast for the Coast Academy of Song and Dance. Covid delayed shows but in late 2020 she appeared in SCYT’s productions of the Wizard of Oz and Grease. Last year saw her in sold-out Mamma Mia by Noosa Arts Theatre and starring as Lisa/ Lesley in Ladies in Black Musical for Coolum Theatre Players. Mum Cristina eagerly awaits Sienna turning 17 so she can drive herself to her many rehearsals and performances. Her goal of a professional career in musical theatre and singing/songwriting means Sienna has her eye on London’s West End, Broadway, or the American film industry. Health Solutions-based hypnotherapy All of us have been embarrassed at some stage in our lives. When we look back on those experiences some perhaps can laugh now, while others may cringe inwardly. If we do something that embarrasses us, we usually try to avoid doing it again don’t we? But what if you can’t? What if you’re embarrassed on a regular basis? I hear this from those I treat for smoking. Once upon a time smoking was ‘cool’. That’s no longer the case and most people I see who smoke now report feeling embarrassed and ashamed of their smoking. They might even try to do it in secret. That is no way to live. Often what starts out as a solution to a problem, becomes the problem. For example, I have worked with lots of smokers who started smoking in their teens in order to fit in with the ‘cool kids’ and be accepted. Smoking was their solution to a social problem. By the time I saw

them however, when they were in their 50s or 60s, the smoking was a big problem. They were embarrassed, ashamed, facing serious health issues and of course, wasting a tonne of money. Solution-based hypnotherapy means moving people along from where they are (as smokers) to where they want to be (which is generally to become a non-smoker or to significantly reduce how much and how often they do smoke). It has proven effective at helping people achieve their goals regardless of whether you smoke two packs a day or one cigarette socially per month. Everyone is happy with the health benefits of quitting smoking but the most exciting element of becoming a non-smoker is the amount of money you save. One client reported to me spending approximately $20,000 per year on cigarettes. Imagine what you could do with that in your pocket – the options are endless – and wonderful to say the least. Countdown’s final episode If you remember the ABC’s Countdown you might be astonished to hear that this year marked 35 years since its final episode aired! Created by Michael Shrimpton, Countdown was designed to find the ABC a new, younger audience. It was a much-loved television music program that aired weekly across Australia between November 1974 and July 1987. Loyal viewers were glued to the TV every Sunday between 6 and 7pm. Four months after Countdown first aired, PAL colour TV premiered in Australia. Some colour firsts: Countdown was one of Australia’s first TV series to be made entirely in colour. Johnny Farnham hosted the first colour episode on 1 March 1975. Horror Movie by Skyhooks was the first music video played in colour. Countdown became the most popular music program in Australia and host, Ian “Molly” Meldrum, was as popular as the show and hosted from 1975 to 1986. Because few international acts came to Australia when it first aired, the show introduced music videos and attracted international attention. Madonna had her first hit single Holiday in 1984 after its video screened on Countdown. Blondie,

Meat Loaf and Cyndi Lauper also achieved their first hits in Australia because of Countdown and were subsequently picked up in North America and/or Europe. Countdown made a point of promoting Australian talent and the show launched the likes of Skyhooks, Men at Work, Sherbert, AC/ DC, Marcia Hines, John Paul Young and Mark Holden. Despite all that talent, most of the live performances on the show were lip-synched. Rhonda Piggott

Snail Mail Did you know it can take around a month or more at the earliest for a priority/express package to get from Europe to an address in Australia? I knew things were slow due to Covid and Christmas but now there is no excuse given by Australia Post. My daughter’s urgent legal papers took just a week to get from a village in France to Sydney where they have now been in the main mail centre since 20 June. Australia Post has tracked it arriving there – but told us domestic mail, even priority paid, can take up to 15 days before we can put in a report or request action. If it has a ‘foreign’ stamp we should expect three months! I was to add a couple more Australian documents to them when they arrived and then post all – Express – to the French Consulate in Canberra to arrive by 30 June. I had to call the Consul and explain the delay. I told Australia Post an old man on a bicycle could have delivered it from Sydney to Eumundi quicker than Australia Post’s planes and trucks!

Matt at the Eumundi Post Office said he has received many complaints from people concerned about long delays with overseas mail and even domestic. Letters can take a week to get across the Sunshine Coast or to Brisbane. So, post your Christmas mail now ... it might even get there by December.
