Eumundi Voice The Eumundi Rotary Initiatives Ltd (ERIL) Board, which provides oversight and direction to Eumundi Voice, held a function on Sunday afternoon to celebrate two years and 50 issues of the fortnightly magazine and thank the wonderful group of volunteers who make Eumundi Voice possible and a success for the community. Around 50 people enjoyed a fabulous barbeque, nibbles, bubbly and beer at a volunteer’s residence with the crowd soaking up the atmosphere of friendship and working for a

common cause. One volunteer was heard to say, “When I got here I felt like I was with family”. ERIL Chairman Greg Molyneux thanked the volunteers for their tremendous efforts over the past two years and called on some of those present to say a few words. Clytie Glass spoke on behalf of the Writers’ Group and praised those who contribute articles. She commended the group, saying how much she enjoyed the meetings because they were always so ‘out there’ and fun and thanked Eumundi Voice for giving her the opportunity. Cont. p3

Cont. from p1 Bob Ward spoke on behalf of the delivery group and had the audience laughing with a few anecdotes on ‘a day in the life of a deliverer’. Bronwyn Innes gave a great description of the diverse models of letter boxes she and her dog deliver Eumundi Voice to and Janet Millington spoke on behalf of the community, saying how much the publication was now part of their everyday lives. Eumundi Rotary president Les Godwin explained the tremendous effort required in delivering nearly 5,000 copies of Eumundi Voice every fortnight and how big a part volunteers play in this. A raffle was drawn to see who would cut the cake and blow out the 2nd anniversary candles with the winners Nicole Plumb and John Turnbull. The group photo was taken with everyone crying out “Long live Eumundi Voice”, supported by music from Noel from popular band Flash Jack. Thank you to everyone who joined the celebrations – now it’s on to the next 50 issues!

No Eumundi Show 2022 Secretary of the Eumundi Park Recreation and Showgrounds Assn Wendy Domin has regrettably advised that the annual Eumundi Show scheduled for September will not go forward due to a lack of resources and volunteers. The committee, with its tiny but keen membership, is working towards hosting the show in September 2023 but needs to build a team of volunteers and is keen to hear from anyone able to assist. Short-stay applications

You may have seen the new verandah lights upstairs at the top of town but there is much more. Salon Eumundi has expanded to offer a range of beauty treatments – facials, massages, pedicures, manicures, cosmetics, a doubles’ treatment room and space for group events.

Noosa’s new Short-stay Local Law which came into effect in February requires short-stay and home-hosted accommodation property owners to lodge an application for using residential properties as short-term or home-hosted accommodation premises. Noosa Council’s Development Assessment Manager, Kerri Coyle said more than 1,200 applications were received in the two weeks before the waived fee period ended on 30 June.

You are welcome to call, have a look around and meet Heidi, Salon Eumundi’s new beauty therapist “skin queen”. Heidi has a wealth of knowledge in her profession. She has been a salon owner for many years and after having some time-out with children she is very excited to be back working with the team that is passionate about hair and beauty. Visit: www. saloneumundi.com.au.

Ms Coyle said a short-stay 24-hour hotline, 07 5329 6466, has been established as part of the new local law so residents can report issues with neighbouring short-stay properties. Council has deferred annual renewal fees for short-stay properties pending a 12-month review of the local law. Visit: www.noosa.qld.gov.au/shortstay-letting-home-hosted-accommodationlocal-law.

Christmas in July What makes a perfect Christmas in July? Everything on your list was at the recent Eumundi & District Historical Assn (EHA) party. It featured great music from the Kitty Kats in red velvet, easy-listening tunes from Flash Jack and a Christmas quiz – which would have been easy if we could remember last year’s answers! Peter and Shauna Wolfe provided fabulous food including a prawn and avo’ starter, ham and turkey, roast ‘taties, mini pavlovas, hot pudding and sauce, and a big spoonful of trifle. A fundraiser for Rural Aid, Deputy Chairman Barrie Adams spoke about how critical help is to our farming families and how something as simple as a Christmas card can make a huge difference to how someone copes with life. Supporters of this most worthwhile cause travelled from Brisbane, Toorbul, Caboolture and beyond. We all left with smiles, full tummies and a great feeling that Rural Aid was given a well-deserved boost. Thank you to the wonderful group of EHA volunteers who organised the event. Ruth Hickey

QCWA ‘Sconversation’ The Qld Country Women’s Association (QCWA) Centenary is a very special birthday to many Queenslanders. Most have a grandmother, mother, sister or friend who has been a member. Many have benefited from special programs, projects, donations, care, provision of community halls and advocacy to government for changes that improve the safety and quality of life for women and their families. The ladies of the QCWA ask people in businesses, neighbourhoods or community groups across Qld to get together for morning or afternoon tea on 11 August to celebrate the contribution of country women. A collage of photos of Queenslanders in ‘Sconversation’ across the state will be mounted as a permanent artwork and a reminder of the reach of QCWA. How to contribute? Download the invitation or poster at: www.bit.ly/3zNIAPr. You can also order scones from your local bakery, QCWA Branch, or even have a go at making them yourself. Take photos, record the name of the business, office, or site of the Sconversation and email them to: qcwacentenary@qcwa.org.au. The ladies at the QCWA Heritage House Ipswich are eagerly awaiting your contributions! Janet Millington, Eumundi CWA President

Commissioner Carroll said the new facility would replace the current split-level station built 55 years ago. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2023 and be completed by 2024. The Qld Government has committed $4 million to the upgrade.

New style stand for Eumundi Voice

Thanks Probus! President of Eumundi Showgrounds Gary Leis has welcomed a new style of magazine stand for Eumundi Voice made by Noosa River Probus Club volunteer, Les Arthur. The stand was presented by one of the magazine’s writing volunteers, Clytie Glass. It is located centrally on a post for visitors in RVs and campers at the popular overnight site.

Minister Ryan said: “I am pleased to be here today with members of the Cooroy community to consult on the design of this new facility to incorporate local expectations.” Community members at the meeting expressed the view that the outside appearance should complement Cooroy’s rural character. The heritage listed cell block will remain and be included in the Heritage Walk.

Cooroy Police Station upgrade Minister for Police, Mark Ryan and Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll met with community members on 18 July at the Cooroy Hotel regarding the replacement of the Cooroy police station.

When catching the train to or from Brisbane it is often easier to drive to Nambour and take advantage of the more frequent service compared to our local stations. Recently announced early works on the $550.8 million Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade stage 1 will make it even quicker. There will be a duplication of the line between Beerburrum and Beerwah and better trackside infrastructure including more parking spaces at Landsborough station, a new bus interchange and increased commuter carparking at Nambour station. Sunshine Sounds Festival The sun shone and little rockers from Eumundi School of Rock shared the stage with an impressive line-up of seasoned performers at Sunshine Sounds Festival on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 July.

“The kids absolutely shone on stage and I think everyone fortunate enough to be there was blown away by their talent and excitement,” she said. “It’s a special little boutique community festival – and a festival with real heart.”

Festival producer Katie Noonan was thrilled with the great sense of community and genuine talent that took to the stage over the two-day event, the second such festival.

“There were so many musical highlights but there were huge goosebumps watching our young Eumundi School of Rock musicians seize the opportunity to jam with Tim Rogers,” said Katie. “Tim brought his musical best and also his mentoring best – full of terrific rock n’ roll and life advice for our next generation of musos.”

14

The all-ages festival showcased a line-up that also featured Katie and Tyrone Noonan of George (performing the 20th anniversary of their award-winning No. 1 double platinum album ‘Polyserena’), Clare Bowditch, Asha Jefferies, Hat Fitz and Cara, Deline Briscoe, JaZZella, Layla Barnett, Zara, Lyndon Davis and the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers, Andrea Kirwin and the Yama-Nui Social Club, Band of Frequencies and much more! In addition to the music, young festivalgoers embraced the craft activities hosted by Mt Ninderry Art House. Sunshine Coast Council’s Wellness Team hosted zumba and yoga classes and Nova star Productions brought their exceptionally long-legged performers to join in the fun (on stilts). Sunshine Sounds Festival was possible thanks to the generous support of major sponsors Sunshine Coast Council and Visit Sunshine Coast, along with key sponsors Regional Arts Australia and Flying Arts, The Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery, Eumundi Community and District Association (EDCA) and Experience Eumundi.

Greater access to affordable medicines With living costs increasingly on the rise it was encouraging to see on 1 July a reduction in the cost of some PBS medicines under the PBS Safety Net Scheme. This initiative reduces the cost of PBS medicines for patients who have spent a certain amount in a calendar year. In real terms the threshold was reduced by $80$85. General patients (non-concessional) now need to spend $1,457.10 compared to $1,542.10. Concessional patients now need to spend $244.80 compared to $326.40.

This is a reduction of 12 prescription items for concession card holders to reach the PBS Safety Net, from 48 concessional prescriptions to 36. It will allow more patients to pay less – and sooner – for PBS medicines. Unfortunately if you have already reached your limit there are no refunds available. The new Labor government has also committed to reducing the PBS co-payment for general patients from $42.50 down to $30 from 1 January 2023. Tania Broadbent, Pharmacist

Black Mountain

Black Mountain Rd update In mid-July Noosa Council advised Black Mountain Rd residents that the engineering repairs needed to fix the February 2022 landslide may not be completed until mid-2024. The landslide was the worst damage to a road on the Sunshine Coast in 30 years. Council updates can be found at: www.noosa.qld.gov.au/blackmountain-road.

While residents understood the repairs will be complex, they were despondent hearing that a fix is so far away. Socially and financially they face significant challenges in their day-to-day lives. Garbage and postal collections have been disrupted as trucks and vehicles are unable to use the road. Having to detour makes school runs much longer and at least one family has moved their children to a new school to avoid the time-consuming and costly 120km roundtrip to Eumundi. Residents running a business from home have lost income as a result of poor access to their properties. The new, higher causeway built by council was welcomed but access at one end is unsealed and very slippery particularly for conventional vehicles. Local resident Judy and her husband bought a 4WD to cope with the poor condition of the gravel access. The cost of maintaining cars which are taking a beating on the rough road is proving significant. Residents have noticed a drop-off in visits by family and friends due to poor access to their properties. Residents from the approximately 50 affected households are keen to maintain communication channels with Noosa Council and acknowledge council’s efforts to date to address their concerns. They worry however about how they will manage through two more wet seasons before Black Mountain Rd is fixed and about slippage in the timetable for repairs. Maintaining the existing access roads in reasonable condition is key to their ability to cope. Rhonda Piggott

determines that the next user is touch typing at 100 words a minute – then it’s probably not me! The bank outsources this task to a “trusted security partner” but “without identifying” me and makes the assurance that my information “will not be used for marketing”.

Biometrics and banking Get ready for the next quiet way that banks are trying to protect us from scams, fraudulent use of our accounts and security threats. Recently the ANZ Bank advised me that “to protect you from fraud and minimise security risks” it has introduced “behavioural biometrics”. No, I still don’t have to peer into my webcam for an eye scan but my “typing speed, pattern, scrolling or swiping activity” will be saved and compared to previous patterns when my account is accessed. You will already be familiar with some other aspects of biometric data for security in digital banking. You can verify your identity with a selfie (facial features), voice recognition (individual voice characteristics) or use the fingerprint reader on a mobile phone. Confirming your identity used to just be pulling your driver’s licence out of your wallet, knowing your DOB and having the extra security of a middle name. Today you will have to add more and more to a “data map” that represents you, and only you, when you want access to a physical or virtual space. Arts One group creating interest in the main street

Urban Sketchers You may have seen some of the Urban Sketchers Sunshine Coast group seated outside the Old Bank Building, Eumundi & Co and the large fig tree recently? Quite a few people stopped to see what the group was up to with their sketchbooks and paints. Lesley explained: “Our Urban Sketchers group meets at different places on the Sunshine Coast at 9.30am every Sunday morning to sketch local scenery. At 11.15am we gather to share our drawings, take photos (finished or not) and enjoy a coffee at a local cafe. Usually between 5 and 15 people turn up to draw anything that takes their interest. “Urban Sketchers is a worldwide movement with several groups meeting in Qld. When travelling we can always join a local event and get to know others with similar interests. On Sunday we had a member from the Gold Coast join us.” Visit Facebook Urban Sketchers Sunshine Coast to join the next event. Lesley, Kings Beach

Vale Robert 'Bob' Kingsley Gammage Bob passed away peacefully on Tuesday 19 July aged 65. He was a familiar figure in Eumundi for many years and known by most as ‘Barefoot Bob’. He was renowned for his ability to paint live artscapes of music and community events. He was also a writer, sculptor, philosopher and formerly worked as a maître d’. In his own words: “We all leave brushstrokes behind to guide future generations back through our historic meanderings. We are the palette of our ancestry, the colours of the moment and the embryonic stage of our future artscape.” Rest In Peace, Bob.

CONGRATULATIONS EUMUNDI VOICE! No matter how big or small your contribution, a massive thank you and congratulations to everyone who has been involved in reaching this fantastic milestone - 50 editions of the Eumundi Voice. The job of putting together such a professional, yet community-focussed and driven publication cannot be underestimated, and it is a real credit to everyone involved. There has never been a more important time to focus on local, and the Eumundi Voice has become a valued source of everything the term embraces. I feel privileged to have been part of the journey to date, and look forward to being part of the next 50, and more! SUNSHINE SOUNDS WOWS Not only is Eumundi known as the home of the world-famous Eumundi Markets, over the years it has also been making a name for itself as a premier music and cultural destination. This reputation was showcased at the weekend’s Sunshine Sounds Festival at the Eumundi Showgrounds. The event, an initiative of Eumundi’s very own Katie Noonan, who needs no introduction, held audiences captive and featured an impressive line-up of local, state and national performers. A special shout out to the young performers from the Eumundi School of Rock who stole the stage on Friday evening. I caught up with them before they took to the stage, and was lucky enough to watch them perform. I have no doubt we will see much more of these talented musicians in the future. Well done to Katie and everyone involved in overcoming the odds to bring this amazing festival alive.

On this day

in Qld. On opening day 17,000 people passed through the gates which was pretty impressive given Brisbane’s population was 22,000. Every visitor received a showbag – a bag of coal. The exhibition received permission to use the royal tag from His Majesty King George V in 1921 and became the Royal Queensland Show. Queenslanders affectionately have referred to it as the Ekka for many years.

The Ekka is back! Brisbane’s most popular event the Ekka will be held from 6-14 August after a two-year hiatus with attendance expected to be more than 400,000. The first Intercolonial Exhibition was held in Brisbane in August 1876. It was designed to show that the fairly new colony of Qld, which separated from NSW in 1859, could compete with its southern neighbours. The exhibition promoted developments in the agricultural and industrial sectors which were key to livelihoods

26

The Ekka has been held every year since 1876 with four exceptions. The first was in 1919 due to the Spanish Flu, the second in World War II because the grounds were used as a staging depot, and in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid. Rides, fireworks, fairy floss, showbags, woodchopping and the agricultural displays remain as popular as ever. I worked on the rides at the Ekka in the 1970s. The Spymaster ferris wheel was impressive, except on windy Ekka nights. The rock-and-roll ride was notorious for emptying pockets of loose change as the barrels turned riders upside down and around. Humour Q: What is a paraprosdokian? A: A paraprosdokian is a sentence or statement with an unexpected ending. It means “against expectations” in Greek. Try these on for size: What do you call a bee that can’t make up its mind? A maybe. Will glass coffins be a success? Remains to be seen. What’s the difference between a hippo and a zippo? One is really heavy and the other is a little lighter. Hear about the new restaurant called Karma? There’s no menu. You get what you deserve. I went to buy some camouflage trousers yesterday. But couldn’t find any. I tried to sue the airline for losing my luggage. I lost my case. Is it ignorance or apathy that’s destroying the world today? I don’t know and don’t really care. I wasn’t originally going to get a brain transplant. But then I changed my mind. I saw an ad for burial plots and I thought: “That’s the last thing I need.” Need an ark? I Noah guy.

Community Grants now open Major Grant funding is available for projects, events and activities that meet community need and provide community benefit. Visit Council's website and apply before 29 August.

Who will you nominate?

Don’t spell part backwards. It’s a trap. Did you hear about the guy who got hit in the head with a can of soda? He was lucky it was a soft drink. To the mathematician who thought of the idea of zero. Thanks for nothing! Son: “Dad, can you tell me what a solar eclipse is?” Dad: “No sun.”

Postcode 4562 census figures Last year’s census had some interesting figures for locals. Postcode 4562 consists of six “suburbs” with an overnight population in Eumundi of 2,504, Doonan 3,727, Verrierdale 809, Belli Park 724, Eerwah Vale 671 and Weyba 352. Together the total population increase from the 2016 census was 9.4% to make a total of 8,787 in postcode 4562. An increase of between 8% and 11% Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island people was recorded totalling 136, or 1.5% of the population. The median age was 46, a one-year increase from 2016. The median weekly household income was $1,945, perhaps a surprising increase of 34%. Another surprising statistic is that 41% of 4562 people have one or two parents born overseas and 62% recorded having no long-term health conditions. Our reliance on cars is evident – two or more cars were reported with each occupied private dwelling by 80% of people. More interesting statistics about home ownership, mortgages, rents and families in postcode 4562 can be found at: www.bit. ly/3vumqyT.

Incredibly supportive, excellent communicator and totally professional! “Our journey to sell our beloved family property began like most; we asked our friends for recommendations of real estate agents. Not once, but three times we were advised - if we were looking for the best agent in the area there was only ONE and her name was Kess Prior. We cannot begin to express our sincere thanks, firstly to our friends for such a fine recommendation, but most importantly to Kess and her team for providing us with such a wonderful and positive experience. We have been told that selling your home can be a roller coaster - all we can say is Kess made it not only a wonderful learning experience but a thoroughly enjoyable ride. Kess supported us through the entire journey; from our very first meeting, guiding us on the best sales approach right through to the weekly reports she would send us to communicating outcomes of each and every open home. We found her incredibly supportive an excellent communicator and totally professional. We set our goal and never deviated - that is until the very end when Kess delivered us an offer beyond our expectations. Happy is an understatement! We cannot praise Kess and her wonderful team enough. If you are looking for the best agent in the area... STOP looking - pick up the phone and call Kess Prior NOW!” Andrew & Belinda - Happy Sellers
