Readers story: Imbil’s Taste of

4 What's On

Croatia After walking the rail trail from Brooloo to Imbil my friends and I were looking for lunch. Imbil was buzzing on a Saturday morning. We wandered along the main street and discovered two new cafés. The new Wild Vine Cafe was serving Eumundi coffee and cakes but lunch options were due to start the following week. A little further along we came across Imbil’s Taste of Croatia. Now that was unexpected in Imbil! The new owners are so enthusiastic, very proud to offer Croatian food options, and are open for breakfast and lunch from Wednesday to Sunday. Their breakfast grill comes with a sausage called Croatian dog and ajvar, a delicious roasted capsicum and eggplant relish. Croatian sweets are less sweet than usual being made mostly from nuts. Everything is made on the premises. For us it was definitely worth the stop!

Madison is a beautiful 12-year-old talented bass guitar player and singer who was involved in an horrific car crash near Coolum on 30 May. Madison and her mum were hospitalised with serious injuries for two months in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast. Due to their separation Madison’s father has had a challenging time visiting hospitals whilst caring for Madison’s 4-year-old sister who was also involved in the crash. Both Madison and mum are now out of hospital however they face a long road to recovery at home.

Students from Madison's music school Hamburger Music Productions decided to help. They joined forces with The Imperial Hotel in Eumundi and presented at Park Sounds on 28 August with an afternoon of free live music at Dick Caplick Park. A great line-up included Harriet Wensley, R&J Duo, Staple, Marshall Hamburger Band and Ampersand. Funds raised were passed onto the family to assist with their recovery. The event was filmed so Madison could see and feel the well wishes and community support. Staple with food, particularly bush tucker, the markets and how aged eight he decided to be a chef. In 1984 he sold his old toys at the markets. He enrolled in a Home Economics course at Nambour High School unaware that he would have to do six months of sewing before cooking started. His first dish? Scones.

Madison’s ‘Road to Recovery’

Matt is constantly looking at the potential for new recipes and loves his relationship with local growers. He describes his style as “taking local products and turning them into great tasting food that looks good” and the delicious scones he baked for morning tea are a great example of this philosophy. Kerrie and the EHA Management Team community institution in Eumundi?

It’s 10am on Wednesday and visitors are already waiting for the Eumundi Museum to open. Had they heard about the special exhibition to mark the centenary of the QCWA which became a vital Rural Aid

On 9 November 1927 Mrs Candy, Miss Irene Ball and Mrs Eleanor Trundle established Eumundi’s branch. Their priority was a restroom to cater for train passengers and other travellers passing on the original Bruce Highway. The CWA Hall was built for £140 and became a community hub for a cuppa, chat, dances, parties, meetings, Sunday School, medical and dental clinics. Fundraising, fetes, stalls, catering, sale of handmade goods, produce, recipe books, talks and hall hire contributed to bursaries and accommodation for girls studying music or primary industries. During the war, handmade blankets, socks and balaclavas cheered overseas troops. In 1945 3,300 blankets from across Australia went to impoverished families in China suffering 25 years of constant war. Over the years the Eumundi branch has donated to road and building projects, educational and charitable causes especially for local families, and catered for the newly established markets. Each year Eumundi State School participates enthusiastically in the QCWA project to study a different culture. The exhibition will be open for a couple of months and is a fascinating tribute to our local branch. Eileen Walder Joe Hextall checks a display

This nostalgic collection includes a video, minute and rule books, treasured memorabilia, photographs and written stories covering the wonderful contribution generations of ladies made to the welfare of not just other women and girls but servicemen, children, young people and even travellers passing through country towns.

The Eumundi Historical Assn (EHA) thanks everyone who attended and enjoyed the recent Christmas in July Fundraiser for Rural Aid at the Eumundi School of Arts Hall on 23 July. With your support and generosity EHA has donated $2,200 to the Rural Aid Farmers Flood Appeal. Kerrie Bryant-Adams said, “Thanks again for your support and hopefully we will do it again in July 2023.”

Louise Formosa – Our Eumundi Village Old Servo 1956-2002 Artist's impression of the renovated site Eumundi: A great place Eumundi is a great place to live, and this is supported by the number of people choosing to live here. Over the past 40 years we have grown and gained so much – but are there things we have lost? There will always be nostalgia for things that used to be and these can sometimes be offset by the benefits that 'progress' has brought us. When a whole sector of our local culture – a sector that has been the very foundation of the success of our town – slowly and imperceptibly atrophies, it might be time for a bit of a revival. The Arts was a large part of what drew people to our community as residents and visitors. There used to be five or six galleries in Eumundi's main street. We had nationally and internationally recognised artists living, producing and showing their work in galleries, parks and at market stalls. There were progressive events on Memorial Dr and a monthly cinema. On Saturdays there was street theatre and buskers. The colour and anticipation of seeing, hearing and feeling something different was in the air. The cafés, often adorned with artworks, were meeting places for fun, discussion and purchasing art Frompieces.5pm on Thursday 15 September at the CWA Hall, Eumundi Rotary Club will host a facilitated town meeting to discuss what a possible revival may look like, the benefits and a frank consideration of the challenges. If you feel you would like to contribute to or support the return of a more vibrant, modern Arts scene in Eumundi please RSVP by 10 September to: secretary.eumundi@rotary9620. org. To discuss the topic prior to the meeting please call any Rotarian you know or email the secretary.

clean-up

16

We have started the first of many steps on the path to developing Our Village Eumundi at the book-end of Eumundi town – Old Highway Motors building and neighbouring lots. This initial step involves a serious clean-up of the former service station and workshop site which historically operated between 1956 and 2002. Unfortunately the previous owners of the site did not take on this environmental responsibility. While other less onerous options may have been available to us, decommissioning of all former fuel-related infrastructure and remediation of potentially contaminated soils is our utmost priority, together with the retention of the Old Highway Motors building.

Over the next six to eight weeks we will be undertaking these works with fenced-off boundaries and an on-site soil remediation plan in place. We will be completing the works in normal working hours to minimise the impact on our community. We ask you to please remain patient while we take on these environmental works and hopefully once this phase has passed we can provide further updates as to progress on Our Village Eumundi. Please contact me by email at: eko.consulting@ icloud.com or Cameron Kay from Core Consultants on 0408 825 619 if you have any questions or concerns.

History of Father’s Day in Australia Father’s Day in Australia is celebrated on the first Sunday of September although this has not always been the case. Throughout the early 1900s newspaper cuttings indicate that official recognition of the day was slow to come and most Australians didn't even know it was an event for several decades.

Father's Day

Six years later President Richard Nixon signed it into law, establishing the day as a US national Inholiday.Australia

was a farmer and Civil War veteran who singlehandedly raised his six children following the death of their mother during childbirth. The first Father's Day celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane on 19 June 1910 with towns and cities across America following suit. As a good American, Sonora realised she would need to commercialise the day to ensure it grew in popularity. Buying gifts for fathers was, and is, incredibly attractive to clothing and tobacco manufacturers and anyone else who sells ‘boys’ toys’. Its success is demonstrated by the fact that by 2016 Father's Day sales in the US were estimated to have brought in $US15.5 billion. US Presidents have also lent their support to honouring dads. In 1924 Calvin Coolidge pressured state governments to mark the celebration. Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential Father's Day proclamation in 1966, making the third Sunday in June Father’s Day.

History of Father's Day in the USA Those who are avid readers of Eumundi Voice and have a good memory may recall my article about the origins of Mother's Day and Mothering Sunday. So, when did fathers get in on the act?

SERVICES

The earliest celebrations of Father’s Day in Australia were held in June alongside the newly established American holiday. As in the USA, fathers were honoured at church services. In Australia however Father’s Day appears to have been greeted with mixed opinions. Newspaper editorials, classified ads and even satirical poems from this period indicate that Father’s Day was seen as somewhat frivolous and unnecessary, with the content often being less than flattering. A cutting from a 1917 newspaper reads: "FATHER'S DAY. LAST SUNDAY WAS MOTHER'S DAY. We asked a lady we know was it true that there was a movement on foot to institute a Father's Day. She said, "No! Certainly not! Father had a day whenever he felt inclined." A modernday translation of this is along the lines of, “It’s Father’s Day in our house every day!”

It took several decades until Father’s Day started to be celebrated around the 1960s. Dads in Australia can now be grateful they finally get to put their feet up and enjoy a bit of pampering. Father’s Day traditions in Australia look a little different to those around the world with the day regularly involving spending time with Dad doing outdoor activities, fishing, BBQs or a day

SCC Heritage Father’s Day in Australia is a day to say thanks and show appreciation for fathers and father figures who inspire and support children with guidance and kindness.

Part of Sunshine Coast’s heritage, Peachester’s Jim Hall was known as The Whittler. He was born in 1920 in Woodford where his father was a farmer. The family later moved to Beerwah and Jim started whittling at the age of nine. His mother and father did not mind the chips of wood on the kitchen floor and encouraged Jim with his craft.

Lots of love, Dad What I learned…

Terence M Hickey Greg Ison

The time has come for me to enlighten you as to my wants and wishes when it comes to presents for Father's Day. Don’t get me wrong – I do appreciate the effort, however small, you have put into thinking about an appropriate gift for he who has nurtured, supported and guided you all these years. But I guess you don’t lie awake at night wondering what gift would be most useful and, dare I say it, bring me some semblance of pleasure. Those items that do neither I will now list: Socks – I only have two feet and there are also only five days between washes so my 24 pairs of socks, some that have never seen the light of day, will probably see me out to the end of my life.

Handkerchiefs – It is no longer sanitary to carry a ‘full’ handkerchief around in one’s pocket. Disposable tissues are now the go and I have enough old hankies for all my future painting and staining tasks around the house. Matching underwear – I am an old-fashioned man with simple tastes in what I wear under my clothes. Nothing wrong with the old Y fronts. There’s plenty of room for comfort. For previously gifted matching underwear see above, Handkerchiefs.

On Father’s Day I take a moment to reflect on the lessons about life that Dad tried to teach me. During WW2 he was a training sergeant at the Qld Canungra Jungle Warfare Training Centre and I suppose that was part of who he always was – direct, authoritative, rational, clear and Ifocused.remember when he taught me to drive an automatic car. We were in a local park and he explained it in its essence with me in the driver’s seat. Him: “One pedal to go, and if you don’t want to go, one to stop.” We started driving backwards in the park around the trees as reversing speed was limited and it taught me to gauge what the steering wheel would do. We used to go ‘shopping’ for new cars together as he loved cars. This taught me to also love cars and how to engage with salespeople. Do more listening than asking. Don’t be afraid to wait and never try to show off how much you already Anknow!older memory was in response to my asking

I look forward to waking up this Father’s Day morning with great anticipation that you have even read this letter.

A Father's Day letter to family

Ties – Not much explanation needed for this useless item of clothing accessory. I have some beautiful ties that I now use as tie-downs for loads in the back of the ute. At the risk of sounding ungrateful I will leave it at that. However, I do have some gift suggestions that would bring me much pleasure and gratitude and be best received: Red wine – Should not be a ‘quaffer’ but a quality Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon. I would suggest spending nothing under $35 per bottle. And lastly, more red wine with maybe a box of Father’s Favourites thrown in.

Dear family,

20 Father's Day

more quality family time over summer.

Father's Day netball dads and daughters The Noosa District’s netball season has ended and it has been wonderful to see so many dads involved with their daughters’ sport. The two teams in the competition – the Eumundi Gems and Eumundi Starlights – have had a fantastic season! Cont. p22

“One of the benefits is that the kids love being here, particularly when Karen is here on the weekend. They often don’t want to leave as they are playing with all their friends but Karen tries to keep some routine for them.”

Dads doing business There are many dads out there who run their own businesses in Eumundi however there is only one dad who owns a Tiki Bar. Jon and his wife Karen recently opened their venture and have been overwhelmed by the community's Withsupport.Father’s Day a few days away, we asked Jon to reflect on what he loves about being a dad. “The way they look up to me. The cuddles I get. It is really simple. It’s the way they look at you and rely on you. Nobody has ever needed you like your own children.” Many things have changed for Jon. Previously he worked away for anywhere up to four weeks at a time but now he is home more during the day and working at night. Although Jon is tied to the business at the moment, as staff take on more responsibilities he is looking forward to having

FREE for a new doll. He sat me down and explained the dollar value of turnover, liability, loss, capital and profit. He talked about the cost of living expenses and how small the fraction of disposable income really was. I certainly valued that doll. We spent a year sailing in Qld and PNG on his 42 foot yacht which taught me a whole lot of things – navigation, sail trimming, heavy weather sailing and anchoring. One black, moonless night we up-anchored to help a couple find their boat which had drifted out to sea. I was very glad I had learned to use a radar and could give calm and clear ‘left 15 degrees’ style instructions to those above deck so that we avoided hitting anything ourselves, found their boat, and our own way back to the anchorage. Keep your memories alive and share them with your family. It’s part of who you are. Ruth Hickey

When asked, “What is the best thing about being the coach of your daughter’s team?” Matt Green the coach of the Eumundi Gems replied, “I work long hours so I don’t see a lot of my daughters through the week. Being able to spend quality time with them, not only coaching netball but also life skills, is really important to me. I love seeing the confidence grow in all the girls throughout the season and watching them come together as a team to play brilliant netball. It is so rewarding and worth every training session and Saturday morning”. The Eumundi Gems' manager is also a proud father and other fathers have expressed an interest in coaching teams next year. This greater ‘Dad’ involvement may lead to an expansion of the club in 2023. In memory of my father 1930-2021 Whenever I see ice-cream sundaes I am transported to an ice-cream parlour in Nairobi Kenya about 55 years ago. The ice-cream sundaes were a once-a-week treat for me and my sister. For my father, the treat was the time he had alone with us. What I recall as much as the ice-cream was the pleasure that seeped from my dad while he watched us and listened to our Thosestories.Tuesday afternoons allowed a closeness to be created between my dad and his girls. This beautiful Queenslander home offers full wrap around verandahs, a heated, inground pool large enough to have a good swim in, and is on fenced, gentle acreage. There’s a dam which is fenced so the dogs and kids don’t go in, a bore so you can water your veggies and a large room underneath, with its own bathroom, which is good for storage etc. If you have kids, the cubby house is already set up, as are the swings.

Anne Winning to his daughters, simply because it gave him the space and time to be himself, by himself, with his girls. He became the primary parent for a few hours and he relished and relaxed in that role. Ice-cream sundaes always remind me of my dad because they gave me my dad for a few hours a week. And once a week, ice-cream sundaes gave my father his Father’s Day.

When I’ve started the day prising open my dad’s urn; When I’ve selected the right view, the appropriate garden, the perfect tree; When I’ve walked for hours to scatter his ashes, alone as his representative; When I’ve felt him cheering me on because I’ve found his favourite track in the forest; When I’ve heard him whisper ‘You’ve done enough now, lass'; Then I’ll allow my dammed-up tears to now spill over.

Long queues were the norm at the food and drink tents. The billy tea and damper station proved very popular as well with a real country feel of hay bales and folk music. There were at least 2,000 adults and 1,000 children, up 30% from 2019, together with a large Rotary and community volunteer contingent.

A first-time flier was so excited that she kept dancing around after the ride telling everyone how fabulous it was. Hats off to McDermott Aviation for providing such a generous contribution to the festival. Major airlines could take a lesson from the McDermott crew on how to make passengers feel welcome and special.

Community Wild Dog Baiting Program Spring 2022 Report feral animals Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) conducted routine night-time surveys at Kenilworth, Conondale and Cambroon from 15-17 August. The survey was conducted from council roads and reserves and used thermal imaging equipment mounted to a council Environmentvehicle.Portfolio

"Feral animals can negatively impact our environment and community by damaging agricultural and horticultural crops, irrigation and fences, competing with livestock for pasture and supplementary feed, attacking livestock, domestic pets and native animals, damaging trees and native regeneration, dispersing weed seeds and erosion.”

For more information please contact: Sunshine Coast Council T 07 5475 7272 E mail@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland is supporting a community-based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility. The Wild Dog Baiting Program will be held throughout Bald Knob, Beerburrum, Belli Park, Conondale, Coochin Creek, Curramore, Eerwah Vale, Elaman Creek, Kenilworth, Kidaman Creek, Obi Obi, Peachester, Reesville and Witta areas from 13 Sept-7 Oct, 2022

So, what are feral animals? Feral means wild and not belonging to the area. Some are imported such as European red foxes deliberately introduced to Australia for recreational hunting

Cr Maria Suarez explained, “Surveying is used to determine the distribution, population, size, habitat use and impacts of feral animals. Council has feral animal control programs in place to assist with targeting problem areas and the data collected from this upcoming survey will be used to assess the effectiveness of the current programs.

Some survey results are shared with research organisations, universities and other areas of government and form the basis for further research, programs and investigations. SCC asks landowners to report sightings of feral animals to council. Council officers can assist with education and action for landowners to minimise the impact of feral animals on their property. Imported from India they are beautiful when under control but escaped domestic birds can become feral and cause problems if in sufficient numbers – scratching roosting on homes and tearing lawns in their search for food. Some feral animals such as dingoes are native to Australia but are a nuisance if in the wrong area. Dingoes and domesticated dogs gone feral are a widely reported pest in areas including Image Flat, Bells Creek, Landsborough and Palmwoods. SCC conducts a baiting program to try and reduce the threats posed to residents, pets and Feralstock. red fallow and rusa deer which have escaped from deer-proof fences roam the Mary Valley, Mooloolah and Maroochy River and Pumicestone Passage catchments. While it is exciting to catch a glimpse of some while the population is stable, the potential is there for them to become a serious pest in semi-rural areas. They pose a threat to road users due to their large size and night-time travel. They also graze and trample on young plants, ring-bark trees and spread diseases and weed seeds. SCC has regulations to control cats to limit predation on wildlife and reduce the feral cat population. Since August 2014 cats must be registered annually, contained at all times and are not allowed to roam off your property. Fence heights may need to be adjusted or cat enclosures needed if you want to exercise your cat outside. Ruth Hickey Further information: www.bit.ly/3AmKbuk, www.bit.ly/3AqvR4h.

The founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Colonel Harland Sanders was born in Indiana USA on 9 September 1890. His name and image are still symbols of KFC. Sanders held a string of jobs, mostly unsuccessfully, until 1930 when he opened a restaurant in Kentucky selling fried chicken and other meals. For the first time in his life Sanders became popular and his business a success. The Governor of Kentucky conferred on him the honorific title of ‘Kentucky Colonel’, a name he used for the rest of his life. His luck did not hold out as tourism dried up during WW1 but he had managed by 1940 to develop a secret recipe for frying chicken in a pressure fryer rather than pan frying. The pressure fryer cut down on grease, preserved flavours, moisture and texture and a meal was quicker to prepare. In 1952 Sanders took to the road franchising his secret recipe for ‘Kentucky Fried Chicken’ in return for 4 cents per chicken. By 1963 his recipe was in use in 600 restaurants across Canada and the US. In 1973 Sanders sold KFC to investors but stayed on as a roving ambassador for the brand. He became the very public face of KFC, always in a white suit and string tie. By 1978 his public criticism of the gravy sold by KFC as having become like “pure wallpaper paste” landed him a hefty but unsuccessful libel lawsuit. Sanders died in 1980 and his family now has no association with KFC. Interestingly, Sanders’ recipe was never patented but has been held tightly as a trade secret. There are still many debates as to what the 11 herbs and spices are that make up the recipe. Rhonda Piggott

NOPEMoviesthemovie NOPE is a 2022 release American science fiction horror film (Australian M rating) written, directed and co-produced by Jordan Peele under his Monkeypaw Productions banner. Blake Ison regularly reviews movies in his blog and shared his NOPEobservations:isavery, very special movie. Jordan Peele has gone three-for-three, with this film being his best work to date. NOPE has got Peele’s DNA all over it but if I were to compare it to anything it would be Close Encounters x Jaws! This film is such a genuine effort to encapsulate proper, old-school film making on the big screen once again. It is a blockbuster through and through that deserves to be seen and appreciated by the masses. Peele truly has given audiences something superb and, in my opinion, it is easily one of the best films we’ve seen come out of the 2020s so far. One that will be discussed for generations.
