Eumundi Placemaking Project Update

Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) recently released the Eumundi Placemaking Project Stage 3 which outlines the proposed streetscape improvements on Memorial Dr as part of its Streetscape Capital Works Program.

From late 2020 a series of community consultation activities were held with local community and businesses. Throughout this process of sharing ideas and gathering feedback, in conjunction with technical feasibility and

Our expert agents at Wythes Real Estate address the below myths and whether they are confirmed, plausible or busted in relation to the Noosa Hinterland property market. 1. Rising interest rates will cause a big drop in the property market. 2. I will get a good price for my house if I sell now. 3. We look forward to sharing your sustainable journey soon!

Spring is here, the flowers are blooming and I can feel the beautiful change in the air. It has been a tumultuous year for many with a lot of change about. No matter how your feathers have been ruffled this year, take a moment to appreciate our region as we celebrate sustainability in all our businesses and markets stall holders over the coming months.

• The generic design.

• Lack of emphasis on the town’s heritage.

Sustainability can include (but certainly not limited to): reducing plastic waste, incorporating renewable energy in your workshop or home, recycling/ reusing, reducing steps in the production line, choosing better chemical alternatives, creating local partnerships and the list goes on!

SCC states the final stage, scheduled for late 2022, comprises the detailed design and preparation for construction. The aim of this stage is to highlight the storytelling and artistic elements within the design that are unique to Eumundi. Construction is planned to commence in early 2023.

We’ll be promoting all the wonderful sustainable stories over the coming months but we need your input before the 23rd of September:

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's words capture the essence of her remarkable service. "This is a loss we all feel, for few have known a world without Queen Elizabeth II. In her seven remarkable decades on the throne her majesty was a rare and reassuring constant amid rapid change. Through the noise and tumult of the years she embodied and exhibited a timeless decency and an enduring calm.”

Eumundi's flag was raised at the Eumundi Museum next to St Ita's bell at 5am on 9 September by well-known local Bob Ward. An ordinary local Saturday – except for an extraordinary world event.

Eumundi's CWA recognises the enduring link between the Crown and our far-away country. CWA Branch President Janet Millington explained: "QCWA was established during the reign of King George V, grandfather to Elizabeth II. Although there is a move to remove the ritual of saying the motto at general meetings, most members are happy as it is a commitment to service. Kings and queens may come and go but the stability of a monarch that does not rule but serves the people is still shown respect."

Queen Elizabeth II was Australia's monarch for 70 years, providing a continuity which spanned 16 prime ministers. She visited our country 16 times in all, was the first ruling monarch to visit and in 1954 travelled to 57 cities and towns in 58 days ensuring thousands still have personal memories of her.

I have not got too involved in all of this as we tend to head the other way from Doonan given the things we need are not in Eumundi, or if they are they are more expensive. However, as a sideline observer, I think something that began as a collaborative exercise between Eumundi interest groups and Council has now turned into a bit of a ’we’re not budging' affair where both sides feel they have the best solution. I think change is good but not just for change’s sake. Refreshing a town’s aesthetics is worthwhile as long as it is sensible and effective and delivers improvements to the lives of those who live in or visit the town. The CWA Eumundi Branch members are disappointed with the streetscape proposal following Council’s consultation process. The insistence on two pedestrian crossings at $350,000 each – after 30 years of being told by Council officers that pedestrian crossings are more dangerous than people taking care and crossing when it is safe to do so – is a concern. Reducing the speed through town would be much QCWAcheaper.members are grateful Council has replaced some lost parking spaces by moving the bus stop but remains very concerned about the inability of SCC to address the safety of residents and visitors as they try to navigate the

Our request is for them is to stop ignoring the decades of neglect of Eumundi’s patches on patched pavements. Also, to not destroy our unique identity by the imposition of the cookie cutter low end look allocated to rural towns while Maroochydore receives higher quality treatments and regular maintenance.

I like the focus on more trees in the street, as that’s one of the most attractive features of Memorial Dr. More places to eat outside will be good if they are in the shade. New pavements, even though only a small part of the plan are a great start to get rid of the uneven and unmatched footpaths. Better lighting and a more even footpath might make the walk between Napier St and Memorial Dr safer at night to get to my car, since some of the carparks on Memorial will go. Traffic on Saturday is at a gridlock already so I can't see that improving. Name withheld.

Apart from one extra parking bay very little seems changed to the original concept presented to residents and community groups despite all the responses given. I find it hard to believe that "creative lighting for evening atmosphere" was really the second highest community priority, when everywhere is closed by 8pm? Name withheld.

I still have serious concerns regarding the placement of the raised pedestrian crossing on the corner of Memorial Dr and Etheridge St. At present when turning right onto Memorial Dr it is difficult to see what traffic is coming. With outdoor dining and trees planted the line-ofsight will be further impeded. On market days traffic will become more congested as cars wait for pedestrians to make their way across the road. Name withheld.

The Eumundi & District Historical Association (EHA) read with disappointment the final streetscaping plan where the heritage of the town was not acknowledged but has been omitted in the updated plan. To promote a love of writing Eumundi Voice and the Rotary Club of Eumundi worked with staff at Eumundi State School (ESS) and North Arm State School (NASS) to hold a writing competition, building on the success of the previous year.

Continuing their support from the 2021 competition with generous prize donations were Eumundi Palms, Templeton Ginger and Berkelouw Books. This year Philip Bunting donated copies of his book The World’s Most Ridiculous Animals. Philip was featured in a cover page story in Eumundi Voice when his book Give Me Some Space! was read to over 1.98 million children across Australia and New Zealand simultaneously by a NASA astronaut last year. The judge for both competitions remarked: “A writer is an artist who utilises words to paint the pictures into the imagination of the reader’s mind. It was an absolute delight to read the wonderous writings of such talented students at both schools and the decision was difficult.”

Eumundi Voice publishes the Yr 3/4 winning stories. Issue 54 will publish the Yr 5/6 winning stories.

I burst into tears. “Oh, this is my fault,” I moaned. “We’ll never find her, all thanks to me.”

As the sun rose, I decided to start my morning school routine. I got dressed even though it was an early 4.34am. Then I found myself unconsciously heading to the laundry to feed Mary. I froze mid-step. “I can’t feed her anymore because she is GONE!” I inaudibly murmured to Themyself.whole

On arrival, Daisy was super excited, but this was next level. She had found something small, round and multi-coloured. It has beady eyes and little claws and looked like…..Merry!!! It was her! She was unharmed. I felt Merry’s soft silky fur and breathed in deeply. My heart felt whole again, and I thought.…I wish everyone knew how it felt to have a love like the love I have for Merry.

Eventually, I went to sleep, but only to be interrupted by terrible, terrible nightmares. Merry laid old and injured on the beach. Soaking with sweat, I woke up. Who knew how long I was caught up in this nightmare spiral?

Snow fell rapidly from the darkening sky. Bitter cold wind seeped through my large jacket, wrapping me in a tight numbing hug. I exhaled roughly and my breath turned instantly to steam, reminding me of the warm hot chocolates I loved as a child. The moon was rising, casting foreboding shadows across the land. I shivered. the night markets–an annual event held only in winter. It was forbidden for children to come.

This will be difficult. I made my move. I ran for it, weaving in between legs, the way and that. I slipped behind a man and there dangling from his pocket was a rusty key. Panting I grabbed it and bolted. The man cried out in angry surprise, “Thief, thief!” Running as fast as I ever had before, I sprinted. Scared, I turned back and thankfully it appeared I had lost him. Towering high above my head sat cages of helpless animals held hostage. I grabbed the rusty key and shakily slid it into a lock. It fit perfectly. “Yes!” I cried excitedly. I ran around hastily unlocking all the cages until the last animal was released. I sighed with relief. My work here was done!

my large wooden door. I winced. If I woke up mum, I would be scolded for days. The snow was still falling fast, it looked about knee deep. I took several more cautious steps and without warning, as sharp piercing noise echoed across the valley. I stopped, I turned and I froze. Before me stood a shadowy figure, the size of a wild boar yet its silhouette did not resemble any living creature I knew. Its breath stunk of fresh meat and fish. It had white glowing teeth as sharp as daggers. Abruptly it turned, looking behind itself. It must have heard something, I thought with relief. While it was distracted, I silently slipped concealed into the forest of snow-capped pines.

The highest reading recorded during August goes to a 42yr old Belli Park woman with a breath alcohol level of 0.162% who attempted to drive from Mooloolaba to Belli Park until intercepted in Doonan. If you are considering selling….call for the latest market knowledge and the best sales strategy to achieve maximum results.

Earlier this year more than 8,000 people had their say on proposed planning scheme directions and this feedback is being used to help inform drafting of the new planning scheme.

Caroline was excellent from start to finish. She was across everything and more - she went above and beyond to make the sale process as stress free as possible. Her kind, attentive and gentle manner was reassuring all the way, and her knowledge of the market and skill in applying that, meant that we got the best outcome possible. We couldn’t recommend her more highly.

In the feedback received from Eumundi-Doonan communities the Local Plan Area (LPA) proposed planning directions were supported. These included no or minimal change in maximum allowable building heights; retain large urban and rural residential minimum lot sizes; maintain current limits on market activity in Eumundi; review centre zone to ensure appropriate opportunities for a small supermarket in Eumundi; protect water quality in Lake Weyba; maintain limits on vegetation clearing

Out to lunch in Goomeri

The day looked gloomy and most of the chores at our Doonan property had been done the day before. We had been looking at a regional map of the region and noted a place called Murgon – somewhere we hadn’t been to. We had “done” Kingaroy and Nanango a few years ago when we lived in Brisbane but didn’t get as far as Murgon. So we packed the car with the usual emergency

we did a u-turn and headed back to Goomeri. We had a choice of a patisserie, a café, a coffee and book store or the pub. All looked very good but we chose the patisserie and ordered coffee, a vegetable pastie and a sausage roll which you would struggle to fit into the boot of a small car. The pastry was buttermilk shortbread pastry and absolutely delicious. The array of sweet things was also impressive and we succumbed to a berry Danish.

Savour beautiful Mediterranean inspired food and drink on the Alfresco’s deck, all freshly prepared by Dennis the chef.

Kick back on the deck listening to live music enjoying our beer & burger deal (choice of 6 burgers and dozens of beers, yes also gluten-free beer). ONLY $20.00. Available for functions, day and evening.

bag – a flask of tea, some decent bikkies and a couple of mandarins – and off we went. The plan was to have lunch in Murgon and come home. We headed north through Gympie and turned left onto the Wide Bay Highway. We transited through Kilkivan and on to what we thought would be a one-horse town called Goomeri, some 75 km west of Gympie. We were in for a Someonesurprise!hadtold us there was a little antique shop there, which we found, and it was probably the best one we have been in for a very long time. We spent an hour there and still didn’t see everything. It was getting close to lunch so we headed off to Murgon. It looks as if everything closes at lunch time in Murgon on a Saturday so

I would certainly drive the hour and a half again to visit the antique shop and dine in one of the quality eating places. It is a lovely drive and quite relaxing. You will need to push the driving seat back a smidge though after you have dined in Goomeri. Greg Ison

Music and camping

If you are new to the region, looking for something different to do, or just love both music and camping there are many annual Sunshine Coast festivals which combine both. Camping is a passion for the owners of the thousands of vans and tents which packed the recent 40th Gympie Music Muster from 25-28 August and roped-off the prime spots in the Amamoor State Forest in the weeks before. Flannies, boots, Aussie bush hats and rhinestones were essential wear. Major drawcards of this four-day Country and Western themed festival were widely recognised performers such as John Williamson, Lee Kernaghan, Beccy Cole and Fanny Lumsden. For a different twist, daily rock and roll and line dancing classes were on offer. Early-risers got a laugh at the poets’ breakfast, and the traditional bush ballads were a treat to celebrate Aussie bush

two-day Kick Ass Music and Camping Festival organised by a camping supplies company at the green lawns of the historic Kenilworth Homestead from 2-4 September brought a range of music to the venue. There was a constant stream of folk between their vans and tents and the stage on the hill had a relaxed “bring your own chair” atmosphere. Local well-known bands like Hill Billy Goats and Uncle Bob’s Jug Band were popular, with the drawcard of Ros Wilson of Daddy Cool, proving Eagle Rock still appeals to a wide audience.
