Peace rug for Ukraine
Children at Karinya Montessori are making a peace rug to send to a Montessori Early Education Centre in the Ukraine.
Kerri Steele, the centre’s educational leader explained how this started. “On our Peace Day we were discussing peace around the world and one of our children who has family near the Ukraine told us about bombs that were hitting and hurting people. Amy Clarke, a Eumundi artist, advised us of her friend who was making rugs and sending them to the Ukraine to drape over bombed buildings. The children were excited to do something similar and send a rug to a Montessori centre in the Ukraine that was damaged by bombing.”
Montessori Education is a worldwide education system established by Dr Montessori. She was a peace activist who lived through both world wars. Kerri said that within the centre’s curriculum children are taught “that we are all different and special and we all want to have a safe, secure place to live and learn”. One of the centre’s favourite Montessori quotes is: “Establishing lasting peace is the work of education, all politics can do is keep us out of war.” Contact: info@karinyamontessori.com. Future-oriented business
We all love leisure activities such as eating an icecream on the beach or gazing at arts and crafts at a hinterland café – but school and university graduates need a diversity of career choices to keep them living and working in the region.
Sunshine Coast Council has its eye on the future with various strategies and industry alliances resulting in attracting a range of future-oriented business and services to invest in the Coast. Highvalue industries that provide attractive career opportunities include software development and screen industries, cyber security and information management systems.
The sectors of health and wellbeing, aviation, aerospace and technology have seen big changes across our region, attracting investment from globally-connected companies. Youi, Huddle, Budget Direct and Bonza airlines have chosen to establish themselves on the Coast, encouraged by council-led initiatives and assured of attractive lifestyles for staff. A new state-of-theart, eight storey musco-skeletal hospital is now in development at Maroochydore. It will be a centre of excellence in clinical care, innovation, education and research.
Council is actively exploring possibilities linked to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. It is implementing strategies to attract capital investment to facilitate a Sunshine Coast International Broadband Network, more hotel investment, and innovation in the health and wellbeing sectors. The growing diversity of the economy and job opportunities has led to an increase in average income levels which continues to attract young people who want to live and work here and be involved in great careers. Caroline was excellent from start to finish. She was across everything and more - she went above and beyond to make the sale process as stress free as possible. Her kind, attentive and gentle manner was reassuring all the way, and her knowledge of the market and skill in applying that, meant that we got the best outcome possible. We couldn’t recommend her more highly.

Daylight saving
It has been 30 years since Queenslanders voted to abolish daylight saving in a state-held referendum. After trialling daylight saving for three years voters were asked the question: “Are you in favour of daylight saving?” Over half (54.5%) cent said, “No”.
The vote marked regional differences as 60% of SE Queenslanders voted in favour, whereas 77% of North Queenslanders voted against.
These days pro-daylight saving campaigners argue that daylight saving could support Qld’s economic recovery from Covid through business efficiencies, increased tourism and retail turnover. They argue there is a new generation of Queenslanders whose views deserve to be heard through another referendum. They also
point out that at the time of the 2020 state election the number of Qld voters had grown by 84% since the 1992 referendum. Irrespective of age, a lot of Queenslanders haven’t had a say.
Opposition to daylight saving comes largely from the State's west where the sun already rises and sets later. Some have pushed for a compromise position whereby daylight saving could be introduced in the southeast. Others argue that would exacerbate regional divides along economic, cultural and political lines.
In February this year Qld’s Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said that daylight saving was not on the government’s agenda. So, once again on 2 October, the east coast of Australia with the exception of Qld moved their clocks forward one hour. Rhonda Piggott

Spring – the queen of seasons
For centuries Spring has been viewed spiritually as a time of hope, new beginnings and opportunity – sometimes called the “queen of seasons”. In this modern busy world we should all pause, breathe deeply and feel the cyclical change. Let your senses be stimulated, feel the warmth on your skin. Find joy in the brilliance of the colours in our gardens and the native flowers at our local national parks.
