Humdrum farewell
In very sad news for those who love a coffee and a place to chat, Humdrum Espresso has advised their Pop Up next to The Imperial Hotel on Memorial Dr will close at the end of October as the rebuild of the burnt-out building is taking a lot longer than expected.
Humdrum’s Steve Arthy explained: “Our customers have been really supportive through our time as owners and the café we built in the original space was much loved and often referred to as the ‘heart of the town’.
“This sentiment continued into our few weeks in the caravan and then to our Pop Up space, however it was only ever meant to be temporary while 100 Memorial Dr was rebuilt. Unfortunately after eight months not much has changed with the building and the owner's plans, hence the difficult decision to close. The future remains uncertain but hopefully the right space and conditions will present themselves and we can rise again from the ashes.”
Customers, staff and delivery partners are invited to a gathering at Dick Caplick Park on Sunday 30 October to say farewell. Drop in for a final coffee at the Pop Up until 28 October.
Drop’n’Go recycling
In March 2017 the Qld government announced its own cash for containers program. The Containers for Change scheme commenced on 1 November 2018. The latest newsletter on the environmental impact of recycling bottles and cans through the program reports 16.4 million kg of carbon emissions saved – the equivalent
of removing 3,953 cars from our roads – and 7.4 million kg of waste diverted from landfill.
Eumundi’s Drop’n’Go Envirobank pod is on Napier Rd. In Yandina it is at Pete’s Village Bakery 5 Farrell St and in Cooroy at 5 Johnson Ct. Free used drop-off orange bags can be collected from Envirobank depots. When you recycle plastics you help to reach the 2050 goal of 35% of plastics demand sourced by recycled materials and bioplastics, avoiding the use of 4.1 million barrels per day of oil. Family day trips – Harry’s Hut
Getting to Harry’s Hut involves winding over a bumpy 4WD track through pine plantations, scrubby gum woodlands and eventually rainforest. Located on the upper reaches of the Noosa River within the Cooloola National Park, Harry's Hut was once a timber-getter's hut during the mid-1900s. It functioned as part of the winch-and-crane operation that transported logs across the Noosa River.
There is little wonder the area is referred to as the ‘river of mirrors’. It forms part of the spectacular Noosa Everglade ecosystem of which there are only two in the world. Take a moment to enjoy looking out over the tea stained, tranquil waters with its perfect reflection of blue skies, scented tea tree forests and fallen trees.
The day use area is part of the Cooloola Wilderness Trail, a 48km inland hike extending from Elanda Point to Rainbow Beach, frequented by campers, hikers, canoeists and boaties. There are environmental toilet facilities and picnic
tables to have your lunch with the local wildlife. You can even drop in a fishing line and try your luck!
Canoeists and boaties can access the area via Kinaba, from Boreen Point and Elanda Point on Lake Cootharaba. Tour boats operate daily from Noosa and Tewantin with canoes, kayaks and small boats available for hire at Boreen Point and Elanda Point. available, who is eligible and the costs.
The Australian Government subsidises the cost of home care services through two different programs, the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and the Home Care Package (HCP). Essential information and a good starting point on both can be found at My Aged Care: www.myagedcare.gov.au.
Organisations such as Anglicare and BlueCare are government funded to provide in-home services to those assessed as eligible and are known as 'providers'. As there are more seniors seeking assistance than available funding, providers are often oversubscribed and waiting times long. Don’t leave it until the need for help becomes urgent to find out whether you are eligible.
There is no getting away from the fact that aged care assistance is complex with a whole industry springing up to help people access assistance. Some law and accounting firms have aged care specialists who can help you with the My Aged Care application process and often offer a free 30-minute consultation, after which fees apply.
Some not-for-profit organisations specialise in aged care. The Older Persons Advocacy Network (www.opan.org.au) and its Qld arm, Aged and Disability Advocates Australia (www. adaaustralia.com.au) provide a national voice for aged care advocacy. They can assist if you face roadblocks in accessing services. The Council on the Ageing (www.cota.gov.au) has information on all things related to older Australians, including assistance at home.
Individuals can join online communitybased organisations such as the VillageLocal Community Hub (www.community.villagelocal. com.au) which provides practical advice on aged care. State Governments also provide information to seniors (www.seniors.qld.gov.au) however as you navigate through the websites all roads eventually lead back to My Aged Care. Rhonda Piggott

Short story: The Beach House by Anne Winning Part 1
She sat close to the edge of the beach on a comfortable grassy knoll that kept her feet from getting too sandy. Her eyes looked north, east, and south, taking in the blue expanse of sea and distant coastlines.
A gentle breeze blew off the ocean, causing a slight tremble to the brim of the hat that shaded her face from the bright sun. It had been a struggle to keep her head on during last night’s gale force winds so today’s tickle was a welcome change.
A sigh escaped her when she thought about last night. If only the family appreciated how hard she’d had to battle against the wind, not only last night but on many occasions when they’d taken her for granted.
She was facing the back of a white board that had been placed at the bottom of her land this morning. She couldn’t read it from where she sat but she knew roughly what was written on it. Who said walls don’t have ears? She’d heard most of what had been discussed late yesterday afternoon and was appalled at what she’d heard. How could they entertain the idea of selling her?
She wished she could somehow tear that sign out of the ground.
BH felt some raindrops drip from her gutters, remnants of the rain that had lashed on her last night. At the very time she’d been protecting them from the storm, they were discussing selling her. Her roof creaked agonisingly, ‘How could they? His mother, dear old Glenda, will be turning in her grave,’ thought BH, ‘She loved me so much. I was the heart of every big occasion in her life.’
The memories stored inside her embracing walls raced forwards and showed themselves in front of her windows. There was Jeff as a toddler, running up and down her gleaming floorboards, spreading sand and seawater in his wake. Further back she saw the day of Jeff’s birth, Glenda’s first son. She recalled the frantic rushing to and fro of the midwife, the Aga constantly boiling water till condensation dripped down her walls. Every surface of her being could feel the tension in the house until the hearty scream rang out and nearly lifted her roof…

Find out more about arthritis
Many people think arthritis is a normal part of getting older but this is not true – two out of every three people with arthritis are between 15 and 60 years old. Arthritis can affect people from all backgrounds, ages and lifestyles.
In Australia one in seven people have arthritis –that's 3.6 million people – and Arthritis Australia (AA) is the peak organisation which supports sufferers. Arthritis is a name for a group of
conditions affecting the joints which cause damage, usually resulting in pain and stiffness. There are more than 100 forms of arthritis and each affects you and your joints in different ways. Some forms can involve other parts of the body such as the eyes with the most common osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout and ankylosing spondylitis.
AA is currently looking for families to share their experiences of living with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) to inform a consumer-focused care guide that will help children and families living with JIA to understand the standards of care they should receive. AA is also working with the Targeted Therapies Alliance to develop information and resources for consumers including practical tools for people with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
For people with osteoarthritis, the AA website’s My Joint Pain can help you lead a more active and pain-free life. Register as a user to access personalised information on your pain, lifestyle, medication and healthcare providers.

Early diagnosis and the right treatment can ease symptoms and may prevent joint damage with research leading to great improvements in this area.
