Seniors

Help at home for seniors – Part 3

If you need more than basic help to stay at home you may consider a Home Care Package rather than the entry-level Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP).

A Home Care Package can include a carer visiting your home to help you shower and dress, prepare meals, or have grab rails installed. What is available will depend on your circumstances. They cover in levels one to four, with four the most complex. Visit: https://www.myagedcare. gov.au/help-at-home/home-care-packages.

Nothing is available until you have an assessment from My Aged Care. If you have had an assessment because you are already getting help through the CHSP, you will need to be reassessed. I have heard of many families who faced delays in getting extra help because they thought one assessment covered everything. It can take several months to get an appointment

so don’t delay. Visit: https://www.myagedcare. gov.au/assessment/apply-online.

If you think residential aged care might be necessary in the near future, that is another assessment as it is all about needs and capabilities. You can be assessed for a Home Care Package and residential aged care at the same time – but you will need to ask My Aged Care to assess you for both.

Home Care Packages are means-tested. Everyone pays a basic fee and some may pay an income-tested care fee. There are annual and lifetime limits if you pay extra. The My Aged Care website’s fee estimator can help you estimate fees. Visit: https://www.myagedcare.gov.au/ how-much-will-i-pay.

Home Care Packages are complex. See Eumundi Voice issue 56 for groups who can assist you in navigating the process.

If you have decided to get a bottle or two of wine as a Christmas present this article may assist when you are faced with the enormous amount of choice in bottleshop aisles.

It is a commonly held notion that expensive wine is better than affordable wine. This is not necessarily true as less expensive wines can offer just as much enjoyment and flavour.

Less expensive wines are a simple, easy-drinking alternative to pricier bottles. They are made from grapes harvested by machines in flat terrain vineyards and can be adjusted with stabilisers or sweeteners during production phases. Costly wine is much more time-consuming with more attention to detail, from handpicking grapes in vineyards to ageing them for several years. These wines are carefully crafted with considerable care at every step.

There are many factors that may affect wine and its price point. Ultimately it comes down to taste, preference and personal budget.

The vineyards and grapes that wineries use are essential factors in the price of the wine. For example, wine produced from grapes in famous regions are likely to be more costly because they

are from vines planted on revered land with century-old traditions, particularly European, American and South American wines.

The best vines grow where there is a struggle –such as hills with low-nutrient soil or near rivers providing fertile ground – and are low yielding which maximises flavour. Restricted grape clusters intensify the taste of grapes. Older vines naturally produce fewer grapes which means less wine, increasing the price.

Generally, inexpensive wines are made from grapes grown in hot regions with fertile soils. These environments grow grape crops easily and quickly but lack the subtleties from different climates.

There is some debate about the impact of machine-harvesting versus hand-harvesting but the basic argument says that machines are too rough and unable to check for quality as well. Low yielding grapes are hand-picked for the perfect grapes which is time consuming and expensive. Visit: www.winepress1.com.au, Wine Press #1, or email: info@winepress1.com.

Naturopathy: a trusted natural therapy

Naturopathy has evolved considerably over the last 10-20 years. Once written off as ‘alternative’ and even a little bit ‘hippy’ the profession is now part of the mainstream, taking its place alongside other trusted natural therapies such as acupuncture and massage.

These days naturopaths have access to cuttingedge science and pathology testing which complement the more traditional modalities such as herbal medicine, nutrition, supplements and lifestyle changes. It allows us to get better results for clients who have chronic and complex health issues.

Eumundi gym for flexibility

Eumundi Aquatic Centre at 26 Memorial Dr is well known for its indoor pool for gentler exercise, and 25m pool for swim squads, laps or aqua aerobics.

There is also a studio gymnasium in the complex

Seeing a naturopath is very different to going to a doctor. A typical first consultation lasts for 60-90 minutes. Naturopaths use this time to go through all the systems in the body and ask indepth questions about your medical history in order to build an overall picture. They are not just looking to resolve your current symptoms

Eumundi Police handled 116 calls for emergency or police assistance in October. We had one of our officers away on holidays so between the three remaining it was a busy month.

Eumundi Police investigated and charged a local male person with 12 break-in and stealing related offences to vehicles that were left unlocked within Eumundi township. These offences led to further offences regarding fraud transactions due to debit cards being left in vehicles.

These break-ins are a great example of how well the local community and your police work together to stop offences being committed, from CCTV downloads to recovery of property in the street. Thank you to everyone involved. Please remember to lock all vehicles and your homes.

Along with these offences we had other offenders committing break-ins within the Doonan and North Arm areas. The new under construction Doonan Pub was also broken into. Please visit their Facebook page and see if you can identify the offender and call police with any information.

Amongst the other investigations in October, Eumundi Police investigated 12 counts of domestic violence, 3 assaults, 5 wilful damage of persons property, trespass offences, 14 stealing fuel offences from Doonan Service Station, stolen vehicle offences, identity fraud and stalking offences.

Highway Patrol (Traffic Police base at Coolum)

issued 73 tickets during October within Eumundi Division all relating to speeding, unregistered vehicles or hoon-related offences. Along with the tickets being issued by Highway Patrol, Eumundi police caught 3 drivers drink driving and 1 for drug driving.

One of the drink drivers was found slumped over his wheel asleep on the side of the road in Eumundi after driving from Noosa and blew 0.166% at 9am in the morning. Local community members were following the driver who was all over the road and called police as he pulled off the road. Eumundi Police also attended 8 traffic crashes throughout the month.

Please remember that our schools are out of bounds after hours without the permission of administration.

Until the November report, please stay safe.

History

Moon madness

It has long been thought that the moon has a powerful effect on human behaviour. We have all heard of being ‘moonstruck’ or acting strangely, ‘over the moon’ to indicate happiness and ‘lunacy’ referring to madness. It is little wonder we have made up all sorts of stories about it over the centuries including the bizarre – turning unsuspecting chaps into werewolves and monsters. Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was allegedly inspired by Charles Hyde, a London man who supposedly committed a series of crimes during a full moon. The moon affects animals as well as people. Animal behaviourist Dr Frank Brown has

reported that hamsters spin in their wheels far more aggressively during the moon's full phase and deer and other herbivores in the wild tend to ovulate during a full moon. In Australia's Great Barrier Reef the full moon is spawning time for coral.

Studies have shown that emergency room visits and accidents increase during the full moon period but there has yet to be any conclusive evidence for causation. To burst this bubble further, an analysis of 'lunar-lunacy' research published in 1985 concluded there was no connection between the moon and incidents such as crime, suicide and mental hospital admissions.

Still the power of the moon persists. A new study suggests a full moon can affect your sleep with volunteers in a sleep lab experiencing 33% less deep sleep during a full moon phase. Of course there is also the romantic association that appeals to us all. A Google search indicates there are some 120,000 song lyrics that contain the word 'moon'. How many can you think of?

Become an online success

Eumundi Voice interviewed local resident and author Paul Browning who recently released Click & Grow Rich:

What gave you the idea to write? I started writing this over 15 years ago when I felt people need a back-up plan in case of redundancy or other life challenges. Working online meant I could be home when my kids were born, took their first steps and first words.

The pandemic hit people hard and I saw many friends struggling and realised I had to finish the book as soon as possible. My wife mentioned the book in a conversation with friends including local hairdressers, psychologists and farmers and there was a lot of interest.

What is the book about? It is basically to teach anyone how to grow a business online, create and sell products and market their website. It goes from beginner to expert level. It guides people on how to come up with ideas for

online products or coaching, create a website and newsletter, take online payments and get their business running on autopilot – freeing up time. It also covers online search engine marketing, sales and success psychology.

Do you have your own successful online business? Yes. I have an Amazon book channel, some membership websites for IT certification, courses for sale on Udemy and my website where I teach what is in the book in video format.

What is the key message? Anyone can build an online business with just a few spare hours. It can be a hobby or designed to replace your full-time income. You can then live wherever you wish. Visit: https://www.amazon.com. au/dp/B0BKYT4M2F or contact me at: www. paulbrowning.com.

We now offer additional onsite services including psychology and cardiac testing (ECG). We also welcome Noosa Hearing for all your audiology needs.

In Search of

Perfumes

From the dawn of time perfume has been used for sacred, cosmetic and mystic purposes and to cleanse and enhance our personal aura.

Dominque Roques’ book In Search of Perfumes reveals the story behind the gathering of flowers, barks, fruits, roots, sap and leaves from the Amazon to Australia all ending in Grasse, France – the perfume capital.

We share Roques' personal story as a sourcing

agent of natural products over the decades and his close relationships with everyone from treetappers to the master parfumiers responsible for famous labels such as Chanel and Dior.

So much back-breaking labour, so many generations of gatherers, so much scientific research, millions of miles travelled, so much passion, blending, devotion and sniffing – all to produce that one exquisite bottle of perfume.

I found the book as spellbinding as a newlydiscovered fragrance. I wonder if Australia's new plantations of rosewood on the Argyll mine site will become the new 'pink diamonds' of Kununurra? My own garden now boasts lavender and jasmine bushes … it might be time to visit my daughter in the lavender fields of Provence. Eileen Walder
