Members of the Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA) and concerned locals set up orange mesh barriers on Memorial Dr on 6 January to indicate the extent of the planned streetscape council works.
The gathering aimed to demonstrate the areas marked for change and highlight traffic problems that could be caused by the removal of the 130-year-old bullock turning area and the construction of two pedestrian crossings.
Organisers of the peaceful assembly believe both proposed pedestrian crossings are in hazard zones based on pedestrian and traffic sight distances.
President of the EHA Donata Page said organisers were very pleased with the results of the assembly. “We want people to see what Sunshine Coast Council's current plans could do and the effect on the town. The road will be narrowed and the beautiful views from each Cont. p3

end will be lost.”
Donata said she was surprised by the number of people who had little or no idea of what was planned. “Much of Eumundi is heritage listed and we need a plan that celebrates and builds on that, not one that erases our uniqueness.”
The 'Save Memorial Drive Eumundi’ petition organisers Janet Millington and Dr David Campin said the petition numbers are close to 1,000. They said council's recent online survey regarding streetscape plans gathered 171 responses to the question, “Have we got it right?”.
Organisers have met with council staff and Division 10 Cr Law but feel they have not been heard. They claim that the Eumundi Memorial Drive Character Area heritage code, which specifically recognises and protects the wide roadway and well-loved views up and down the main street, will contravene council’s own planning scheme. Concerns have also been expressed that the works proposed by council include $500K of State Government funding under the SE Qld Community Stimulus Program. They have asked council for spending to be put on hold while a new plan is developed.
“Improved communication between residents and the council is now critical to the development of a community-endorsed plan. Clearly locals do not want council’s plan and the numbers against it grow every day,” said Kita Lawrence from Xpose Media Sunshine Coast.
Campaign supporters are pooling their resources to develop a plan, supported by concerned community members. Visit Instagram: @ savememorialdriveeumundi.

The Audreys in Eumundi
Americana/alt-country darlings and multiple ARIA award winners The Audreys will take to the stage at The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel on Saturday 28 January, supported by Tobias Band.
The Audreys have graced almost every major festival in Australia and played more gigs than they can count. Formed in Adelaide in 2004 by Taasha Coates and Tristan Goodall, The Audreys have played at rock festivals and clubs across Europe and North America, sold songs to film and TV shows, written music for theatre, and gone gold.
Sadly in July 2022 Tristan passed away after a long illness. With his blessing Tasha has continued what they started and is touring with a new line-up who will join her in Eumundi. The Audreys have been back in the studio so expect a new release in 2023.

Katie Rose Cottage Hospice
Katie Rose Cottage Hospice (KRCH) in Doonan is a palliative care facility set in peaceful, beautifully maintained gardens. The facility was recently allocated $1.5 million from the Federal government to expand its end-of-life care services. Brewery buys Cooroy Bowls Club
Your Mates Brewing Co. recently purchased Cooroy Bowls Club renaming it, Your Mates Bowlspub – Noosa. The model will be similar to its brewpub at Warana which focuses on providing hospitality and community events.
Your Mates Brewing Co. was started by two mates, Hep and McGarry, in 2013 when they left their professional careers to follow their dream of brewing beer. From a small backyard operation they have grown from two mates to a team of over 50 employees. One of their beers ‘Larry’ was recently voted the third most popular beer in Australia. “With bowls clubs closing down all over the place we’re stoked to bring a whole new concept to bowls and give one club a new lease on life,” they said.

Brothers shine on stage
Just months ago the Noakes brothers were swimming, winning karate titles and considering a future in AFL, however their ability to "wow" an audience with their amazing dancing has them swapping boots and bathers for ballet tights and sparkly costumes.
At the recent Performing Arts Factory's spectacular production at The J, Lachlan was awarded Performer of the Night and a scholarship. After only five weeks of lessons his brother Reilly received thunderous applause for performing with older and more experienced dancers and received a scholarship for his exquisite pas de deux with Zylia Enslin. He told his mother, "I don't like ballet – I LOVE IT!”. Little Flynn was upset he couldn't be in even more!
The boys performed several numbers including hip-hop, musical theatre, jazz, gymnastics and modern dance with intricate, demanding choreography and rehearsals. Their excitement after the final curtain, praise from fellow dancers, encouragement from professional dancers in the audience and pride of academy principal Brigette Kay and parents Danielle and Matt ensure this talented trio can't wait for next year.
Eumundi State School Principal
Anthony Swan, Acting Principal at Eumundi State School (ESS) for 2022, will continue in his current role for Semester 1 of 2023. Previous ESS Principal Michael Connors will continue in his current role as Principal at Baringa State School for this time. “It has been an honour to work with the wonderful ESS students, staff and community and I look forward to doing so again this year,” said Mr Swan.
Sharing Kashyap’s story
During the final term last year some Year 3/4 English students from North Arm State School had the privilege of a visit from student Kashyap Dhital. They had been learning how to write short stories and reading a variety of books including one written by Kashyap entitled The Explorer’s Diary. Kashyap was only 10-years-old when he wrote and published the story and will be in Yr 7 this year at St Andrew’s Anglican College.
Students asked questions and Kashyap shared his knowledge on what he thought was essential to writing a good book. “All books start with a good idea,” he said. He also listened to some of the students' short stories before giving them a preview of his new book available later this year.

Meet Eumundi vet Dr Chris
Eumundi Voice welcomes Dr Chris Smith who purchased Eumundi Range Road Veterinary Clinic in December after Dr David Clift’s retirement. Dr Chris and his wife Dr Steph, also a vet, met at University in South Africa with both graduating in 2015. There he worked in an
animal charity hospital and public health before immigrating to Australia. Both have worked in a variety of locations across Australia before finally settling in Noosa and are excited to share their passion for animals and become part of the Eumundi community. Dr Chris has a special interest in surgery and will be focusing on small animal practice, dogs and cats, although he has a wide range of experience in all areas of practice.
When asked about his most interesting case he recalled the excitement of capturing and working with giraffes. “To work with them you have to dart them and when they become immobilised you have a team of people with ropes that run around the giraffe and trip it over. You then sit on it’s head so it can’t move.”
Dr Chris has big plans for the practice with the recent introduction of in-house diagnostics and reporting to give same-day results for any samples collected. They are offering a wider range of prescription diets and preventatives and Dr Steph is also working towards making the practice as eco-friendly as possible with several recycling initiatives.
Outside of work Dr Chris loves off-shore kayak fishing and spending time with his one-yearold son Luka, who may be seen helping dad out at the clinic from time-to-time. For more information visit: eumundivets.com.au or to book a consultation phone 07 5442 7803.

Why the Camino de Santiago
Part 1
OK - so here I am, nudging 71, reasonably sane and reasonably fit and living, as we all do, in a little piece of paradise. So why am I impatiently waiting for next April to roll around? Because, I then depart for France and Spain to walk my 4th Camino de Santiago, the Frances route - the ancient 800km Pilgrim’s Way from the south of France, over the Pyrenees and across the north of Spain to Santiago de Compostela. I am not here to describe that path (or the many others) or its history - you can do your own research: watch the movie ‘The Way’ starring Martin Sheen and currently on SBS On Demand, have a look at some of the million YouTube videos - especially
those by Efren Gonzalez, read one of the many Camino books and listen to some podcasts - the best is by an Aussie, Dan Mullins, ‘My Camino, the Podcast’, free in the app. Also, there is a Sunshine Coast chapter of the Australian Friends of the Camino which meets regularly at the community centre in Mudjimba; afotc.org. Join and ask questions on the free on-line forum at: caminodesantiago.me.
But, what is it about this bloody long, bloody hot and often bloody hard walk - carrying all your very limited possessions on your back, sleeping in bunk beds (fight hard for the literas inferiores - the bottom bed) in hostels (albergues) with up to, in the worst/best case, 89 others cheek by jowl, eating somewhat repetitive tucker with lotsa, lotsa carbs and drinking large quantities of excellent cervesa (beer) and vino tinto (red wine) - or vino blanco if you prefer - that keeps me coming back for more?
I heard about the Camino sometime around 2014; thought it sounded interesting then promptly forgot about it. However, in 2018 I met a former RAAF mate who had done it and thought ‘what the hell, I’m up for this’, and off to France and Spain I went, solo. I planned to walk it the once, get the T-shirt then look for some other later-life excitements (having already cashed-in my mid-life crisis ticket a decade ago). But, after a week or so walking it became obvious that there was a lot more to it than simply a long walk through spectacular countryside/cities/towns with centuries of history - if you just opened your mind and your heart - and even your soul. A’la Pauline: Please Explain.
The practical details first, the logistics: what to pack, how to get there, how long to walk each day, where to sleep etc etc? Again, do your research - YouTube packlist videos abound, buy the Brierley Camino Frances guide book and start planning - and most importantly - get light/ quick drying clothes, good shoes (I recommend extremely strongly to get trail runners, NOT boots) and a comfortable backpack (mochilla). All this hands-on stuff is very good fun and very time-consuming in itself - ‘prior planning prevents p..s poor performance’ as my old Flying Instructor drummed into me.

PNG midwives make a difference
As part of Eumundi Rotary’s ongoing project to support the health of women and children in Papua New Guinea (PNG) the club recently supported a new initiative to improve midwifery care particularly in remote areas. More than 80% of the PNG population live in rural and remote areas with an estimated 250,000 births annually and high rates of infant and maternal mortality. The Rotary club of Morialta, South Australia
introduced a training course designed to improve newborn and maternal outcomes through the strengthening of leadership and advocacy skills of PNG midwives. Eumundi Rotary and the Woombye-Palmwoods Rotary Club sponsored a nurse, Nadi, from the Dogura mission hospital in remote Milne Bay Province to attend the midwifery course in Port Moresby.
While Nadi was not a qualified midwife she was performing the duties of a midwife at the Dogura hospital. One of the comments from the post-

Hopefully I don’t start looking like Chief Wiggum from The Simpsons. A lot goes on behind the scenes that cannot be reported in Eumundi Voice but here is a breakdown of the year that was.
Eumundi Police charged offenders with 433 charges in 2022, unfortunately the highest total amount of charges we have ever put before the Magistrate’s court. Although we still only have four police officers we attended 418 emergencies in 2022. We breath-tested 2,164 drivers and charged 37 with drink driving, 59 with drug driving and 40 for driving disqualified. Eumundi Police charged 53 offenders with drug-related offences including supplying, producing and possessing dangerous drugs. We
investigated over 140 stealing offences including those from vehicles and fuel drive-off offences. We attended 49 break and enter offences and charged 39 domestic violence repeat offenders with contravening domestic violence orders, along with 49 new domestic violence orders. We also investigated 37 assault offences.
Our Road Policing Unit is responsible for traffic-related policing operations based out of Coolum and issued 712 tickets in 2022 targeting speeding and hoon-related offences. Traffic Branch officers responded to 65 public-reported online traffic complaints including school zone offences and parking. We attended 49 serious traffic crashes and our emergency call-outs in the early hours exceeded double on previous years.
Thanks to all the community who assisted us at incidents including floods, traffic crashes and putting their hands up to be witnesses for investigations. Let’s hope 2023 is a little less eventful.

NoosaCare welcomes workers from Fiji
NoosaCare recently welcomed five new staff members from Fiji to work at its aged care facilities at Carramar in Tewantin and Kabara in Cooroy. They are likely to be in Australia for at least two years.
Acting CEO Jamie Oakley said, “We’re thrilled to welcome the Fijian personal carers to our team”.
Faced with chronic staff shortages across the aged care sector in Australia, NoosaCare had to think creatively and explored options not previously considered. Recruitment of the Fijian staff was made possible through NoosaCare’s participation in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme – an Australian government-sponsored program to assist organisations facing workforce shortages. PALM allows Pacific and Timor-Leste workers to take up jobs in Australia, develop their skills and send income home to support their families and communities.
It has taken a while to get the Fijian carers here. After being selected in mid-2022 they undertook Australian TAFE distance learning from home and will complete a Cert III in aged care while working at NoosaCare. Fiji has a culture of caring for family and the elderly. Even so, living and working so far away from home can be challenging and NoosaCare and PALM are very focused on helping the workers build local community connections.

Memories of a once-magical place
Eumundi Voice is sharing ideas and views in a series of articles on reviving the arts in Eumundi.
Any conversation about what is currently happening in the Eumundi art scene must be informed by the past, so I sought the memories of a Eumundi art icon.
Tina Cooper, Australian Hot Glass Artist, looks back on a time that she identifies as a huge help in establishing her career and attributes her success in part to the opportunities presented at the Original Eumundi Markets (OEM).
This was her introduction to the promotional and practical side of an artist building their career. “Galleries would not buy stock if you were at a market, except Eumundi … they felt it was more of a high-end gathering of incredible creations from up-and-coming artists in all mediums in one open gallery.”
Tina also felt that the town sustained her creative side. “It was truly magical and stimulating for an artist to be around the buzz in Eumundi.” She reminisced that her whole world revolved around the market. “It was where I bought my clothes, my food and even gifts for my friends.”
With a hint of sadness the renowned artist remembers the changes that finally saw her exiting the OEM. “It became less and less inviting to the art lovers and celebrities who came to

Eumundi for that art experience.” She realised that the world she had enjoyed no longer offered her or her clients the same environment. “I find this extremely sad as it was once an incredible learning experience to be in the original market.”
After her exit Tina retained her gallery in Eumundi and continued to engage with fellow artists creating experiential events that would engage tourists and locals alike. Although she no longer exhibits in the town Tina keeps her memories of Eumundi and its ‘magical’ past.
Tina will be facilitating a forum on Reviving the Arts in Eumundi this year. Keep an eye out for details in upcoming issues of Eumundi Voice. Stephanie Ryder
ON THIS DAY
2023 – the year of the rabbit
The Chinese or Lunar New Year begins with the cycles of the moon and this year falls on 22 January. Around the world almost 2 billion people will join celebrations that last for up to 15 days.
The first recorded mention of celebrations to start a new year in China was in the Han dynasty 202BC-220AD. Chinese New Year has been celebrated in Australia since 1937 although there were Chinese settlers here well before then. Today over 1 million Australians of Chinese, Korean, Singaporean, Malaysian, Thai and Vietnamese heritage mark the day with family get-togethers. Sydney holds the largest celebration of Chinese New Year outside of Asia with a parade complete with lion and dragon dances and paper lanterns. The colour red, so closely associated with Chinese/Lunar New Year celebrations, symbolises good fortune and hope.
The Chinese calendar has a 12-year cycle with each year represented by an animal from the Chinese zodiac. If you were born in 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 or 2023 your Chinese zodiac sign is the rabbit. You are likely to be vigilant, quick-minded, elegant, witty and ingenious. The rabbit is the luckiest of the twelve animals in the zodiac.

Maori, Chinese, British, Indian and Schnauzer backgrounds. Yes, ‘Miss Marple’ the Schnauzer is Ted’s sidekick.
Location names and the casual mention of RM Williams’ boots, Cheezels, silo murals and Missy Higgins adds authenticity and familiarity. I enjoyed the book and its clever interweaving of subplots but I recommend a notebook to keep track of characters’ annoying names and their connection. A Routine Infidelity
This plot has everything imaginable, twisting and turning until the end ...
We begin when Private Investigator Edwina (Ted) Bristol thinks she has satisfactorily solved the ‘routine infidelity’ but suddenly everything becomes complicated with embezzlement, murder and attempts on her life. During this she is guilt-ridden by her mother’s death and her inability to hug her father.
In this book almost every female has a male name. Why? There really was no point apart from annoying me. I had to keep reminding myself: “Who is Ted, Bob, Jackie, Chuck?”
Set in Melbourne the plot involves online dating and catfishing, unresolved family tensions and guilt, fantasy war games, returned Vets with PTSD, phony psychics, doggy daycare, computer whiz-kids and embezzling from employers. Melbourne’s diverse population is represented with characters from Arabic, Japanese,

1 tbsp caster sugar
Finely grated zest of 1 or 2 well washed oranges
3 tbsp Pimms No 1
450ml thickened cream, beaten
200g meringues, broken into chunky pieces
450g fresh strawberries
Punnet of blueberries or raspberries
Tub raspberry purée (in veg section at Woolies)

Put the sugar in a large bowl and stir in the orange zest and Pimms until the sugar dissolves. Leave overnight if possible. Add to beaten cream then beat again to soft peaks.
Stir meringue pieces into the cream mixture. Put the strawberries and half of the other berries into a bowl and press with the back of a fork to release their juice without crushing completely. Stir gently into the cream mixture with raspberry purée.
Spoon the strawberry and cream mixture into a glass serving dish. Scatter with remaining berries. Chill for 30 minutes. Decorate with mint leaves and serve.
Powering our future with sunshine Council is the first local government in Australia to build, own and operate its own solar farm. The award winning 15 megawatt solar farm, at Valdora, has offset Council’s electricity consumption across all of its facilities and operations since July 2017, including buildings, parks, libraries, aquatic centres, galleries and street lighting. Based on current electricity prices, the solar farm will save an estimated $22 million over 30 years. Where have the Christmas beetles gone?
A once familiar figure of the Australian summer, Christmas beetles (Anoplognathus spp.) appear to be on the decline. In the past millions of these large, often brightly colourful and iridescent beetles would fly around in December and January. Christmas beetles are large scarab beetles and beetle larvae primarily feed on the roots of native grasses. There are currently 35 known species of beetle.
To determine if numbers are declining, and why this is happening, more research is required. Gathering data on the locations of Christmas beetles is the key priority of a study currently being carried out by The University of Sydney and Invertebrates Australia – and they need your help.
Becoming a citizen scientist to identify, track and report the whereabouts of these beetles may help to gain a greater understanding of

The Mary River catchment and surrounds have around 40 frog species with about a quarter of these vulnerable, endangered or unsighted in recent decades. “Our journey to sell our beloved family property began like most; we asked our friends for recommendations of real estate agents. Not once, but three times we were advised - if we were looking for the best agent in the area there was only ONE and her name was Kess Prior. We cannot begin to express our sincere thanks, firstly to our friends for such a fine recommendation, but most importantly to Kess and her team for providing us with such a wonderful and positive experience. We have been told that selling your home can be a roller coaster - all we can say is Kess made it not only a wonderful learning experience but a thoroughly enjoyable ride. Kess supported us through the entire journey; from our very first meeting, guiding us on the best sales approach right through to the weekly reports she would send us to communicating outcomes of each and every open home. We found her incredibly supportive an excellent communicator and totally professional. We set our goal and never deviated - that is until the very end when Kess delivered us an offer beyond our expectations. Happy is an understatement! We cannot praise Kess and her wonderful team enough. If you are looking for the best agent in the area... STOP looking - pick up the phone and call Kess Prior NOW!”
