Cont. from p1 works has been provided to council by TMR. Cr Law expressed his frustration at the delay particularly as construction costs continue to increase.
When questioned about the progress of the application since council’s latest update, Dan Purdie said TMR referred him to the formal advice provided on 24 February 2023 which confirms TMR and the Minister remain committed to helping council with this long overdue project.
“I share the community’s frustrations over the ongoing design and engineering issues. It’s something they’ve been demanding for over 20 years and has been one of my top priorities since I was elected five years ago,” said Dan.
“I am proud that I was able to secure funding for this project in 2020 and we’ve all been extremely patient since then as it’s gone back and forth between council and TMR. I have been repeatedly assured by the Minister that the project is fully funded and TMR is committed to supporting council as it will become an important part of the pedestrian network.”
Hejira Convery is the Eumundi resident featured on our first front cover in 2020 and explains that for their family the Eumundi-Noosa Road bridge is an ongoing issue. “We’ve had many scary times walking in anxious single file across the bridge to get to and from playgroup, school and restaurants in Eumundi township.
“There is a sliver of uneven bike track which is particularly scary when large vehicles like trucks, 4WDs and motorhomes whizz by in both lanes. On two occasions I’ve seen a family member trip on the uneven edge and fall onto the road which
was miraculously free of traffic at the time.
“We have also ridden the emotional rollercoaster of seeing the pedestrian bridge supported, funded and then stalled. Three years ago a significant number of people signed a petition calling for safe pedestrian access across the bridge and we were elated when full funding was announced. This relief has been followed by the disappointment of seeing nothing built and the project needing to be redesigned.
“Though we’ve held out hope the bridge will be made safe in the near future, this hope has faded as the years have gone by. When I first raised the issue my daughter Ajuna was in a pram and she is now about to finish Yr 6.
“I know other community members were agitating for safe access years before I began doing so and although I’m very grateful for the efforts of Dan Purdie and Cr David Law, the fact remains we still have no safe pedestrian access to town and no sense the project is imminent or will ever happen.”

Proposed Woolworths supermarket
Woolworths is seeking community consultation on a proposed supermarket on a 6.6-hectare site at 125 Myall St, Cooroy opposite the golf club. The design of the site is in the early engagement phase and a Development Application has not yet been lodged with council.
Prior to submitting the application, the community is invited to contribute at an early stage to ensure the overall design reflects Cooroy’s heritage and unique village feel with environmentally sustainable measures. Two-thirds of the site is available to include community-led uses and the existing vegetation fronting Myall St will be retained as much as possible except for potential site access. The primary access will most likely be from Myall St. For more information or to provide feedback on other services or uses that could be suitable to be co-located with a new supermarket visit: cooroywoolworths.com or email: contact@ retail-projects.com.
Tiki Bar to close
After more than a year in business bringing smiles, music and fantastic street food to the crowds at the Tiki Bar in The Pavilion Eumundi, the current owners Jon and Karen are closing the business on 26 August.
"We have had such a wonderful time with the Tiki Bar. We have met the most amazing, talented, hilarious, quirky and beautiful people, had the best laughs and built relationships that will last a lifetime.
“The community we have in Eumundi truly is a blessing. We will miss being on that side of the bar but look forward to occupying a stool on the other side in the near future.
“The challenges of juggling a small business with a young family are real but we are richer for the experience and extremely proud the Tiki Bar is such a success. Come September we are looking forward to spending weekends with the kids, camping, days at the beach in the Kombi and getting back into our gardens and property which have become a little unruly!
“We thank everyone in our beautiful community for their love and support of us and the Tiki Bar from day one!”
There may be an announcement on the future of the Tiki Bar soon, however expressions of interest are welcome. If anyone wants to keep the Tiki alive email: @thepavilioneumundi.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
Issue 75 of Eumundi Voice (EV) celebrates three years of publishing a fortnightly, full-colour magazine as the voice of our community – full of local news, what’s on and engaging articles. Eumundi Rotary Initiatives Ltd (ERIL) operates the not-for-profit entity of EV which donates all profits back to the community.
Thank you to our readers who let us know they look forward to the delivery into their letterboxes and to our advertisers who keep our towns and localities alive with services, produce and activities. So, who is behind EV? Here are some of the team who made it happen … 75 times!
Joyce inspired fellow Rotarians in 2020 to start EV and has been a key player in our success since then. Born in Emerald Qld she has lived in Eumundi since 2002 after a career in banking, teaching and management in several states and PNG.
Ruth has been a member of the EV team since the start with roles as writer, editor and chair. Originally from Western Australia, then based in Cairns working at JCU, she made Eumundi her home in 2017.
Heidi is our graphic designer who from issue one has juggled photos, stories and advertising into 32-36 high-quality pages. She is guilty of sneaking in a dog photo or two wherever possible.
Rhonda was a diplomat with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for 35 years before moving to Eumundi in late 2018. She joined the EV team in October 2021 and writes What’s On, Looking Ahead, On This Day and more.

Urban sketching
‘Seeing the world one sketch at a time’ – that’s what urban sketchers are doing all around the globe, all the time.
During the pandemic I fell into the rabbit hole of YouTube where I came across something called urban sketching and found plenty of virtual opportunities to learn more and sketch along with others.
Urban sketching is capturing the world around us – urban scenes, landscapes, people, food and drinks. Cafés are ideals places to sketch alone, with friends or as part of an urban sketching group. Most people, including myself, work in ink and watercolours as they are easily portable and lend themselves to the quick nature of the sketching.
Freed from various restrictions in France I discovered my local group and now I go along to meetings of Urban Sketchers LanguedocRoussillon as often as I can. It’s an active group with two to five meetings each month. Why do I do it? It’s a sociable way to be out and
about discovering new places and enjoying the creativity of drawing and painting. Groups welcome sketchers of all levels, they’re very supportive and it’s a great environment to learn. The existence of more than 400 groups around the world offers a wonderful opportunity to discover new places and meet with other enthusiasts. In Australia last year I discovered Urban Sketchers Sunshine Coast while reading Eumundi Voice online. Imagine my delight when the first meeting I could get to was in my old home town of Eumundi where I spent an enjoyable, if rainy, morning sketching on Memorial Dr!
Urban sketching groups are usually found on Facebook or Instagram –Urban Sketchers Sunshine Coast, Urban Sketchers Languedoc-Roussillon. Visit: urbansketchers.org.

Good fun at the Doonan Planting Festival
It was a stunning winter’s day at the Doonan Creek Environment Reserve for the recent planting festival. Thank you to those who attended. Together we planted 2,750 native trees and shrubs for National Tree Day and I was happy to contribute 51 of those.
Lots of families, singles and couples helped to put plants in the ground, made bush critters, screen-printed a cool tote bag, found out about the Blue Heart, learned about invasive species, checked out the reptile display or bought a native tree from the Coolum Community Native Nursery.
Every stem planted goes towards helping restore the reserve and provide essential home and food for local wildlife including koalas, glossy black-cockatoos and grey-headed flying foxes. Our community has helped restore the reserve for many years and in the past four years alone
has now planted more than 16,380 native trees, shrubs and ground covers.

Out and about on electric bikes
If you’re thinking of getting an electric bike but are confused by the amount of information out there, what are the main points to consider? Electric bikes are power assisted so you can pedal as little or as hard as you choose. An electric bike will get you there faster, cost nothing to park, make for an easier ride and yet still provide some exercise. Costs range from $3K to $10K+ so it depends on personal finances and where you want to ride it.
There are several electric bike stores on the Sunshine Coast and most are happy for you to take a bike for a spin. If you are as tentative as I was about trying out a new-fangled technologically propelled vehicle for the first time on a public road, find a friend who is happy to let you try theirs out locally. The Girraween sports complex at Noosaville has a velodrome that works a treat. Some choices are similar to the ones you would make when choosing any bicycle – range of
gears, saddle shape and accessories – but other decisions relating to batteries for example will take research. The location of the battery is an important factor as it is the heaviest part of the bike and an electric bike is heavy! Some bikes have a battery built into the frame while others have a removable battery. This is not as sleek but can be a bonus when removed as the bike is then not worth stealing.
The battery can take 4-6 hours to fully charge but it is important to check the manufacturer’s instructions and shorter interim charging times can be more convenient. How far it takes you will depend on the demands of your ride, how much pedal power you use and how much work you want the motor to do.
The controls including speed and battery charge display are on the handlebars. The location of the electric motor is another variable. It can be either in the middle of the bike or in the wheel hub. If the motor is in the wheel hub this can be a problem if you find yourself with a puncture in that wheel meaning it cannot be removed easily. On the other hand, a hub motor makes the bike lighter and often more affordable. The advantage of a mid-mount motor is that the centre of gravity is lower giving a more stable ride. Mountain bike riders take note.
If you want to take your bike further afield you may need to invest in a special bike rack that you can wheel it on to. I bought my electric bike to do deliveries of Eumundi Voice so it only needs an interim charge once a month. Fresh air, moderate exercise and saying 'Hi' to the neighbours – I love it! Happy electric bike hunting!

Well it’s great to be back in Eumundi after working away for nearly six months across the Sunshine Coast. During June and July Eumundi Police were called to attend 73 emergencies or calls for police assistance. This resulted in 120 reported police occurrences with Eumundi Police currently undertaking 41 criminal investigations.
Burglary with break-in offences occurred at Cash Rd Eumundi, Jenson Rd Ninderry and Valdora View Valdora. Police need members of the community to assist in reporting any suspicious behaviour including vehicles driving up driveways and turning around if someone is home.
There were 21 reports of stealing which included fuel drive offs, two trespass offences, two stealing from vehicles and three wilful damage offences in the last two months.
Police can now test for cocaine drug driving to prevent serious traffic crashes. Six drug drivers were caught in the last two months, two people were found to be drink driving and five were charged with driving while disqualified. Six offenders were charged with drug possession. Unfortunately domestic violence offences have risen across the Sunshine Coast and Qld with Eumundi division being no different. In the last two months Eumundi Police have attended 33 domestic violence incidents which resulted in eight new domestic violence orders being issued in Noosa Magistrates Court and six domestic offenders charged with contravening an order already in place.
Our highway patrol units based out of Coolum issued 96 traffic infringement notices across the division for speeding and hoon-related offences. It appears distracted driver offences – using a mobile phone while driving – are also on the rise.
Please drive safe, lock up and report any suspicious behaviour.
