Cont. from p1 With peak wildlife trauma season approaching there were concerns this success would be under threat.

RSPCA QLD's CEO, Darren Maier has stated that increased staffing costs have led to the need for the reduction in qualified staff and that there are plans to increase the role of volunteers in an effort to control costs while maintaining services. He also stated that the current reduction in staffing levels will not affect capacity and there is no intention to close the centre.

Claire Smith, CEO of Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast said they rely heavily on the services EWRC provides to sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. “Our hearts are breaking for the amazing staff at EWRC. They have dedicated their lives to making a difference for our wildlife in crisis.

“We would like to know how a wildlife hospital can run with fewer qualified staff and more volunteers. The crux of saving lives is the work done by the vet nurses and the part-time vet. Volunteers don’t have the qualifications to do this work.”

Claire reported that late last week, in a 180-degree turn around, RSPCA QLD has since reviewed its position due to public pressure and will now replace the two nursing positions with staff from RSPCA Wildlife Hospital in Wacol.

Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast has also been raising funds for the purchase of much-needed equipment. “The budget EWRC receives from RSPCA QLD barely covers running costs and it certainly doesn’t cover items that would make the lives of the staff, volunteers and wildlife much easier. We asked EWRC for a ‘wishlist’ of

things that we could help them with. To say I was shocked that they had no money for these items is an understatement.”

To date Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast has purchased: a new vacuum cleaner, wall clocks, humane possum traps, bottle warmers, heat discs for patients, sets of crop-feeding tubes, a pressure washer for the aviaries and enclosures, an ultrasonic surgical instrument cleaner, soft mesh cages for patients, cloth bird nets, plastic storage containers, a label maker, mobile possum enclosures for the mammal ward and twilight red bulb lamps for night feeds.

“This centre plays a big part in our community and we want to make sure Gill’s wish that it continues doing great work and is never under threat of closure comes true. She’s a legend in her own lifetime and we thank her so much for the generosity of her gift.

“We should celebrate the amazing contribution individuals in Eumundi make when they come together as a team, stand by them as a community and ensure Gill’s legacy carries on.”

If you would like to help support the EWRC with the purchase of equipment visit: facebook. com/WildlifeRescueSunshineCoast and help keep Gill’s dream alive.

Everything old is new again

With more than 3,500 photos of early Eumundi and District available to the public in the Eumundi Museum’s heritage collection, curator Joe Hextall hopes residents will have fun giving them a modern creative touch with the results going on display.

The idea is to choose one or more original photos and then digitally manipulate them to bring them up to date. This can be done by dressing up in period clothing and putting yourself in the scene, maybe making your dog the timber-cutter, or your children riding on the bullock wagon.

Let your imagination run wild while appreciating the thousands of photos that tell the story of our early town and its pioneers. Some of the photos have poor resolution so contact Joe at the museum, Tuesday to Saturday, to get a better image. You can then submit your updated photo.

The competition runs until 30 November so get busy and enter as soon as possible. Entries will be displayed in the museum alongside the original photo.

The winning photographer will receive $500, with $250 for best under 18yo entry and $250 for People’s Choice. The original photos can be seen at: ehive.com/collections/6344. For further information and rules visit: eumundimuseum. org/eumundi-reconstituted.

Morphine induced musings

Firstly, I’d like to acknowledge the amazing health professionals who showed nothing but kindness during my recent 'staycation' at Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), particularly Daisy, Dikshya, Elle and the guy who made the tea. He memorised my order, was always cheerful and positive and even kept the kids happy. Five-star service!

Secondly, I’ll say a short and sweet goodbye to Boris the Bosniak who made this entire experience possible. Without you this awesome staycation at SCUH wouldn't have been possible. As we’re honouring the eviction of my not so little and not so charming over-stayer Boris, here's some of our history.

Around four years ago I visited a locum doctor who advised me I had a shadow on my left kidney. “How do you get a shadow on your kidney, isn't it dark in there?” I mused. He advised it’s probably nothing and will disappear and we all went on our merry way. In fact, this was the birth of Boris.

Fast forward to 2023 and while experiencing the joys of perimenopause and the delight of hot flushes that felt like being bathed in Tiger Balm, I decided to change doctors to one who may be more empathetic to women’s health requirements – enter Dr Kate.

Dr Kate diligently went through my medical history, pausing on a pelvic scan and asking where the follow-up imaging was. I duly

Dr Faldt completed his medical training and internship in Sweden and started his GP training before moving to Australia in 2013. For the next two and a half years, he held postgraduate house officer positions throughout Toowoomba, Noosa and Nambour Hospitals. He enjoys all aspects of GP practice and when he isn’t working a surf never goes amiss if he isn’t already away camping.

Dr Paul Baker

BMBS, PhD, BSc (Hons), DipAppSci

Dr Baker completed his medical degree in 2012 at Flinders University in South Australia, before completing his intern year and the early phases of his emergency medicine training at Flinders Medical Centre in southern Adelaide. He moved to the Sunshine Coast with his family in 2017 to continue his training in emergency medicine at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

advised her of the “kidney shadow” to which she responded the sonographer's notes stated it was a cyst requiring a further scan in 12 months. Dr Kate whipped me off for this scan and Boris the Bosniak was discovered. No symptoms, no pain and off to hospital I go.

As I sat in my pimped-up hospital day bed with bells and whistles (literally), minus the poolside, sunshine and pina coladas, I found the experience quite surreal. It’s a judgement-free zone, anything goes in hospital and people are generally very patient (pardon the pun). I get halfway through writing my musings or asking a question and drift off to sleep mid-sentence ...

They say no question is a dumb question except in my humble opinion … “How are you Darl, are you well?” is a tad strange as I’m in hospital with tubes in various places. I guess the right answer is, “I’ve been better. Thanks for asking.”

They also phrase questions in the strangest way like, “How’s your pain?” My immediate internal response is, “Awesome thanks, how’s yours?!” My actual response is a score out of 10, which is

subjective of course, so it’s probably not helpful to anyone else.

After fasting for nearly 18 hours the first meal I was offered was soup. I’ve gotta say that was the best pumpkin soup, no wait, sweet potato soup, aaahhhh leek, nope 'unidentifiable soup' I’ve ever tasted! Who says hospital food isn’t good?

So what are the morals of my morphine-induced musings?

I suggest you don’t take a doctor's opinion as gospel, go with your gut and ask for medical notes, scans and question everything that doesn’t make sense. You can ask to record your consults and medical meetings so you can listen to it afterwards and look up anything you don’t understand. A lot of diseases have no symptoms so get a regular check-up – kind of like your car but more important.

When life throws you lemons – make lemon cocktails! I recommend taking a staycation by the pool but not SCUH despite the lovely staff and the great work they do. Stay well.

Introducing Dr Gillian Cairney

Dr Gillian Cairney completed her medical degree in Scotland in 2012. Following this, Gillian travelled to Australia, where she devoted over two years to working primarily in the emergency department at Gympie Hospital, Queensland. She found the diverse range of medical conditions intriguing and considered herself fortunate to have gained such invaluable experience both professionally and personally during her time in Australia.

Commencing her GP training in Scotland in 2015, Dr Cairney relished the opportunity to work across various medical specialties throughout her training. She successfully completed her GP training in West Lothian, Scotland, in March 2020. Following this, she embarked on a one-year tenure as a GP locum at Kenilworth Medical Practice in Cumbernauld. Subsequently, she took on a salaried position at the same practice for the following two years.

Dr Cairney and her family have now made the decision to relocate permanently to Australia. She will commence her new role at Ochre Medical Centre Eumundi on 25th of September.

We love our Vegemite

The strong-flavoured Australian staple Vegemite first came on the market 100 years ago. It was developed by Cyril Callister in Melbourne in 1922 in response to a disruption in British Marmite imports following WWI.

Vegemite was initially marketed as beneficial to children’s health by the Australian company Fred Walker and Co. but it failed to sell well. In 1925 Walker established the Kraft Walker Cheese Co. in a joint venture with J L Kraft and Bros to market processed cheese. In 1935 he used the success of that venture to try again to market Vegemite and gave free samples with Kraft Walker cheese products.

By 1939 Vegemite was selling well especially after the British Medical Association endorsed it as rich in vitamin B. During WWII Vegemite was part of Australian Army rations and by the late 1940s was used in 90% of Australian homes.

Today 22 million jars of Vegemite are sold annually with Callister’s recipe virtually unchanged. In a survey of 2,300 people conducted by The Herald Sun in early 2022, Vegemite was favoured by 27% just ahead of the meat pie and lamb roast. A love of Vegemite seems to be part of Australians’ DNA.
