Laneway Flowers and Coffee
Laneway Flowers and Coffee recently opened a café at The Pavilion Markets in Eumundi. Owners Deb and Duncan own stores in Noosaville and Noosa and previously lived in Eumundi. They are looking forward to providing locals with fresh flowers, Padre coffee, cakes, pastries and gifts. Their team consists of fully-trained baristas who move between the stores.
Plenty of seating is available and they are currently open 7am-2pm on Wednesday and Saturday. Opening hours will include Fridays from 22 September before gradually increasing to 7 days a week. Pop in to enjoy a lovely quiet spot to sit and chat with friends and buy a bunch of flowers. I did!

BASK Eumundi moves to new home
Famous for its long lazy lunches, award-winning BASK Eumundi is moving after two years of calling Eumundi home. Located in the Old Bakery Building on Memorial Dr, owners Jack Madden and Jess Coolican recently announced they will move to a new location which will be announced soon.
Awarded a Chef’s Hat for Culinary Excellence in the Australian Good Food Guide 2023 they have outgrown their current location. Even though they have loved their Eumundi home they are also extremely excited about their next chapter. Well-known local hairdresser and neighbouring business owner, Ashlee Collins is taking up the challenge of opening a café by day and wine/cocktail tapas bar by night. Aptly named Bella-101 after Ashlee's eldest daughter, she is hoping to have her new venture up and running by mid-October.
Bella-101 will initially serve Padre coffee, café style breakfasts, snacks, salads and sushi. They will then open on weekends with wine, cocktails and tapas-style meals. The vision is to create a space where people can come and relax in a beautiful, chilled environment that provides affordable and tasty food. Watch this space!
Café Doonan expands
Café Doonan owners Sabine Franz and Greg Josephson recently took over the business formerly known as the Hideaway Bakery in the Eumundi Village Centre with the grand opening of Café Eumundi scheduled for early October. There will be a range of treats baked in-house and coffee.

Day out in Woodford
Woodford is well known for its annual Woodford Folk Festival but if you are looking for a family day out with a difference the town has a lot to offer.
The Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society operates train rides on its narrow-gauge rail line on the first and third Sundays of the month from 10am-3.30pm. The society was established in 1971 when a group of railway enthusiasts met, keen to preserve a representative collection of locomotives and rolling stock used on Qld sugar mill tramways. For over 30 years the society has worked vigorously to acquire an irreplaceable collection of gauge steam, diesel and petrol locomotives and rolling stock, including a variety of line cars.
If you choose to go exploring Woodford on the third Sunday of the month, in addition to the train rides on the Durundur Railway, there is an opportunity to visit the Woodford Museum and Art Gallery and Woodford Country Markets in the morning. Coffee shops and cafes are open and there are picnic and barbecue facilities available.
The drive from Eumundi to Woodford is approximately 70 minutes via the M1 highway south, turning off at Steve Irwin Way towards Beerwah. Woodford is located on the D’Aguilar Highway. For more information visit: angrms. org.au.

Blue Heart Sunshine Coast on show
In early August I, along with 80 guests from across the Asia Pacific, attended the Asia Pacific
Blue Carbon Workshop organised by The Nature Conservancy. Blue carbon ‘farming’ provides an economic opportunity for council and Blue Heart private landholders in the future.
Council is working to understand the barriers, challenges and opportunities that go along with blue carbon farming so we can share our learnings with private landholders in the Blue Heart area. By doing this we hope to upscale the project, protect more of the floodplain and most importantly provide a pathway for an alternative source of income for landholders.
I regularly share my community chat days, local events, new development applications and other messages on my Facebook page at: facebook.com/MariaSuarezDivision9.

Housing support
Residents interested in assisting and supporting those in need of housing could consider providing an opportunity for accommodation on their own property, such as by adding a secondary dwelling.
A secondary dwelling is a permanent structure with a building approval that can be occupied by another household – and they don’t have to be related to the main dwelling’s occupants. Alternatively it could be a temporary home, for example a tiny house on wheels, a caravan or a bus.
Under council’s local law a temporary home can be in place for up to 18 months. Further information is available on council’s website by searching ‘building and development fact sheets’.
If you have any questions contact me at email: david.law@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and follow my Facebook page for regular updates: @ DavidLawDivision10.
Introducing Dr Gillian Cairney
Dr Gillian Cairney completed her medical degree in Scotland in 2012. Following this, Gillian travelled to Australia, where she devoted over two years to working primarily in the emergency department at Gympie Hospital, Queensland. She found the diverse range of medical conditions intriguing and considered herself fortunate to have gained such invaluable experience both professionally and personally during her time in Australia.
Commencing her GP training in Scotland in 2015, Dr Cairney relished the opportunity to work across various medical specialties throughout her training. She successfully completed her GP training in West Lothian, Scotland, in March 2020. Following this, she embarked on a one-year tenure as a GP locum at Kenilworth Medical Practice in Cumbernauld. Subsequently, she took on a salaried position at the same practice for the following two years.
Dr Cairney and her family have now made the decision to relocate permanently to Australia. She will commence her new role at Ochre Medical Centre Eumundi on 25th of September.

Rotarians for Mental Health
There is much in the news about mental health in our community and five Rotary Clubs – Noosa Heads, Noosa, Noosa Daybreak, Cooroy and Eumundi – decided to band together to see what they could do to change the situation of a lack of help for those who suffer from PTSD.
At a recent Eumundi Rotary Club meeting, Tex Pipke explained the focus and commitment of the clubs who are working under the banner of Rotarians for Mental Health (R4MH) as a facilitator to link those in need with those who can help.
Initially the committee zeroed in on PTSD. Visits to University of Sunshine Coast’s Thompson Institute and with Dr Ben Isbel helped them understand brain retraining and the role physical and mental activity plays in sustaining a healthy brain.
Their first public event was A Day in The Park on the Noosa River in 2022 which invited those touched by PTSD to visit with service providers including the organisation PTSD Dogs. First responder groups including the Qld Police Service, Qld Ambulance Service, State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service and firefighters were represented and the theme 'Don’t Bottle It Up' was born.
The next event was a one-day conference attended by 85 people which shared current research and understanding about PTSD. A video was shown covering the key points including research into understanding PTSD, personal stories of its impact and strategies to support those in need. The committee recognised
the interconnection of PTSD and suicide, and domestic and family violence. Visit: vimeo. com/829747341.
Using the strength of the Rotary name the committee has more events planned. Aurora Hammond will bring her wealth of experience from the Quest for Life Foundation and speak on 17 October at RSL Tewantin. An update on brain research in early 2024 is also proposed.

Father’s Day breakfast
Spending time with Dad is always special but sharing a good Aussie brekky at school is even more special. Over 100 dads and kids were at school early on Thursday 31 August for a freshlycooked bacon and egg sandwich, coffee or tea prepared by members of the Eumundi Rotary Club. School Chaplin Chappy Sam said it was a wonderful way to bring families into the school and share Father's Day this year. Mmmm, that bacon smelt good!

RECIPES
A simple dip that smacks of posh!
From the ‘I Spy’ Amateur Kitchen Files
This is a very simple dip that is easy to prepare and delicious to eat. I first sampled this at a garden party in Butterworth, Malaysia in the 70s and have made it ever since. Don’t be put off by the caviar. If you don’t think you would like it, don't worry as the dip combines three flavours so not one stands out.
• Hard boil five eggs – you can do more or less depending on the size of dip you want.
• Shell and put eggs back into the saucepan, cut into quarters making them easier to mash.
• Add 125gm of softened butter and mash with a potato masher while still warm, but not too finely.
• Line a dessert dish with cling wrap with enough to fold back over the top of the dish. This makes it easier to pull the egg and butter mix out of the dish when hardened in the fridge.
• Spoon the mixture into the lined dish and fold the extra length back over the dish to seal.
• Place in the fridge until hardened – you can prepare this mix well before your guests arrive, even the day before.
• When it is time to serve the dip, turn the dish upside down and gently pull the cling wrap so the mixture comes out onto a flat serving plate flat side down.
• Spread sour cream over the mixture about 5mm thick and smooth with the back of a spoon.
• Spoon one small jar of black caviar – Coles and Woolworths sell it – onto the sour cream and spread carefully with the back of a spoon.
• Place crackers around the dip together with a small knife to the spread dip.

Bites and stings
It is the time of year when the weather warms, our gardens turn green and start to bloom and we spend more time outdoors. Along with this shift to the outdoors comes a greater opportunity to receive an unwanted sting from an annoyed insect. Whether it is a sting from a bee, wasp, ant or unidentified bug the results are the same – pain and irritation.
So what happens when an insect stings? Stings from some insects are administered from ovipositors – organs used for laying eggs – that may also inject various noxious substances. Other insects use a modified ovipositor such as the barbed stingers of bees and wasps. Ants use their jaws or mandibles to grab hold of your skin and hang on, then swing their abdomen forward and use their stinger to pierce the skin.
Once the sting is received your body elicits an immune response which can range from mild to serious with symptoms including swelling, redness, heat, burning pain and sometimes intense itching. In severe cases an anaphylactic response can cause gross oral swelling and difficulty breathing – which is potentially fatal.
In mild reactions the treatment is usually entirely supportive and aimed at alleviating the symptoms. St John’s first aid recommends the application of a cold pack to the bitten or stung area for 15 mins with reapplication if pain continues.
A pharmacological option is to use products such as Stingose which contain aluminium sulphate and work to inactivate the venom found in a range of stings and bites. It interacts with proteins and long-chain polysaccharide components of venom and inactivates it. I keep mine in the fridge for the extra cooling effect.
Other insects such as mosquitoes and sandflies use a mechanism that is different to that of stinging insects. These insects bite to feed on their victim's blood. Most insect bites will only elicit a minor allergic reaction which includes local redness, swelling and itching caused by a reaction to the insects' saliva.
Mosquito bites can cause serious illnesses if the insect carries certain viruses or parasites so it is important to use preventative measures when visiting areas in which these are prevalent.
Treatment options include anaesthetic creams such as Itch-Eze Plus, mild-corticosteroid preparations and antihistamines to relieve itching, redness and swelling.

Talk Like a Pirate Day
Talk Like a Pirate Day was created by two friends in the USA in 1995 as a joke but is now celebrated internationally on 19 September. According to Wikipedia the idea came about when John Baur and Mark Summers were playing racquetball and one of them, in pain, said "Aaarrr!"
In Australia Talk Like a Pirate Day is a national fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Support. Each year hundreds of schools, childcare centres, workplaces and community groups band together and host their own event in support of Talk Like a Pirate Day. You can dress up or host pirate-themed morning teas or get-togethers. Events don’t need to take place on 19 September. Anytime during the month is suitable as part of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Visit: fundraise.ccs.org.au/event/talk-like-apirate-day.
Pirates are not all fictional like Jack Sparrow. They still roam the seas and come from all over the world, scouring the waters of the Indian
Ocean, the Red Sea, the coasts of Africa and SE Asia. Somalia is considered the most notorious producer of today’s pirates. The International Maritime Bureau’s Maritime Piracy Reporting Centre in Kuala Lumpur monitors piracy robbery and armed incidents around the world. For a map of hijacks and boardings by pirates in 2022 visit: icc-ccs.org/index.php/piracy-reportingcentre/live-piracy-map/piracy-map-2022.
