The living house has been designed for a couple with a young child, who wishes to transform the existing two-bedroom terrace to contain 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, a small courtyard and an additional upper-storey. The heritage terrace should Transform to meet their needs of contemporary living, whilst retaining its Edwardian character of the street frontage. The house will Extend the use of adjacent lane-way as a secondary access for bike storage, as well as wheelchair access. Furthermore, it will accommodate for the maternal grandparents who wish to live closer to the young family for the first ten years. It will then need to Adapt to the changing needs of the growing family for the following 20 years. To accommodate family interaction, independence, and privacy, the relationship and connection between each space were carefully considered throughout the design process. The pitched angle of the roof were echoed and extruded in the upper extension of the terrace, to draw connection and recognition of the existing heritage facade. The courtyard is carefully integrated in the living space to allow natural daylight and greenery to enhance the calm and subtly elegant characteristic of Carlton.

The light timber flooring and furnishings work effectively with the firm texture of white painted brick wall, which together enhance the daylight brought in through the courtyard. Private space including bedroom and bathrooms are located on the south, which allows for an open living space facing the northern daylight. The long flight of stairs emphasize the narrow terrace plot, as well as connecting private and shared space via the courtyard. The occupant travels directly from private to shared space when using staircase. Windows of each bedroom allow sufficient skylight, and outlooks into outdoor greeneries. Courtyard, living and roof top terrace allows for family interaction. Each family members can control the level of privacy and interaction within their own bedroom space. Amenities can be accessed from both ground floor and first floor for ease of access and independence within each floor.
