Colourful Reflection Colourful lights and funky reflections. Through the installation ‘Colourful Reflection’, people’s excitements are heightened for the rewarding big bang of the night. Located at each official firework spots and as procession along the river, I hope to create a lasting memory which journey through the end and beginning of the year.

One Way Mirror Reflective Film
Design Proposal Colourful Reflection is a public installation
located at several official sites including Docklands, Flagstaff garden, Treasury garden, Kings Domain, and Alexandra gardens. (City of Melbourne, 2018) These installations are fun and engaging during both day and night, due to it’s reflective and colour-changing properties. At every angle, the translucent panels will provide multiple reflections of you and your surrounding environments in different angles and hues. As they see their own reflections, I hope the visitors get a chance to reflect their personal journey of 2019 in a playful way. The long daylight hours of the Melbourne summer during the event was considered thus the installations remain entertaining throughout day and night. The main feature of Colourful Reflection are the translucent panels with dichroic film adhered to the outer, and the one way mirror film on the inner side of the pavilion.

Birrarung River Procession
Design Context Every year Melbourne celebrates New Year’s Eve with fireworks in the city to welcome the new year. Despite crowding and traffic congestions, people still make the effort to gather in the city with their friends and family to watch the mesmerising fireworks burst in the night sky, wishing for another new beginning. On this significant event, I wanted people of Melbourne to create another exciting memory on this final day of the year as well as providing excitement and hope to the new year ahead. As they see the funny reflections of themselves on the colourful installations, I hope more conversations are brought up and shared to reflect 2019 and look forward to 2020.

During daylight, the sun will shine through the installation panels to create colourful shadows on the ground, which will shift according to the movement of the sun. On the outer skin, reflection of the surrounding elements will be visible, providing a changing perspective of the surrounding landscape. From the interior, visitors can view their funky kaleidoscopic reflections of themselves, while the external surrounding remain visible through the translucent panels in daylight. As the day gets dark, the internal reflections will become clearer as the external environment becomes less visible. Meanwhile, the participants inside the pavilion will become clearly visible from the outside. Due to the internal light source, people outside can see the participants interacting with their reflections from inside. Visitors can also send their new year resolution or wishes for the new year when entering the pavilion. This can be done by sending the message to the QR code presented at the entrance of the installation. This allows audience to share their personal insights of the year and participate in the event. The method of sending messages electronically also means that inappropriate messages can be filtered out before being projected to the public during the night. These projections will occur on the river installation at night.
Another key feature of the New Years Eve event is the procession of transparent inverse-pyramid installations along the Birrarung river. As the sunlight glitteres onto the installation, the gradual movement along the river will remind people about the passing of the time. This is similar to the movement of the colourful shadows created by Colourful Reflection which shifts as the sun journeys throughout the day. The giant crystal installations will draw people’s attention and allow them to anticipate for exciting performances that will run on the platform stages. These inverse-pyramid installations will later become hologram projectors for the night performance, which the performers can also interact during their light show. The hologram projectors will also be used to project the new year resolutions which the participants have sent, as will as projecting the countdown numbers for the midnight firework. With entertaining installations and performances spread along the river, I hope to ease pedestrian flow by reducing the need for the visitors to ooze through the bridges to reach the south side of the river. As more entertainment is visible from various spots along the river, people can enjoy the night with lots more to see and less need to squeeze. These spectacular installations will remain on its spot until the sunrise, to tell the public that the new year is a new beginning, yet it is just a continuation of our life as a journey.

Challenges and Considerations Increased crowd capacity Increased population is expected in the city in the annual celebration thus extra consideration needs to be taken in order to reduce risk and ensure the festive spirit of the visitors. Temporary infrastructures such as toilets and first aid booths are required to be located at appropriate spots throughout the city. These facilities are important to ensure the safety of the public, as large number of people are expected to walk longer distances to reach the site due to road enclosures. As people can be entertained by the river installation along the river bank and the bridge, the stress for people to travel to the south of the river might be reduced. However it is also important to control crowding as people might crowd up at street corners or above the bridge to get a better view of the installations on the river. Traffic control As the event is a significant annual event, the city of Melbourne performs road closures to accommodate increased pedestrian capacity as shown in page 16. Road enclosures require traffic controllers and fences which must be organised accordingly. Furthermore, it is important to notify people of Melbourne, so they can plan ahead for the night. Weather Conditions Due to the long daylight hours of Melbourne summer, the installation was designed to remain entertaining during both day and night. However, as the installation utilises direct sunlight to create colourful shadows, the effect of the installation can be reduced if the sky is cloudy during day. If rain
occurs the event will become less comfortable due to limited undercover areas in the city. However the event is likely to continue as the installation will remain intact through such weather conditions. Site Constraints For the river installations, the height between the surface of the water and below the bridge must be considered. It is also important to keep in mind that the measurement will vary according to different time of the day, due to change of water levels in high and low tide. The Colourful Reflection installation should be placed at relatively flat ground, as installing on slopes will require further modification to the design and more care in ensuring the safety of the structure. Technology In order for the projections to remain clearly visible, the surrounding environment needs to be dark. Additional lightings provided for the event may disturb the clarity of hologram projections. Therefore, careful consideration is needed for extra lighting design for the event. Adequate power supply for the projection of hologram and installation lighting is also required. For the installation, it is important to avoid power cables as tripping hazards. Meanwhile river projections would require batteries with adequate power supply that last throughout the night. Use of solar power can be considered as the installation as the installation occurs from daylight to night, however daylight hours might be insufficient to fully charge the batteries
. Performers As the platform stage is above water, extra water vehicles are needed to transport props and performers onto the stage. Further consideration are also required to provide preparation and storage space for the performers. Installation Preparation Suitable docking area needs to be found to load and unload large river installations. When the procession reaches to its spot, it is important to securely anchor them so it remains still during the night performance. Permit Approvals, Permits and license are required for installation on public ground and processions on the river. This is to ensure public safety and protect the natural environment of the river and the garden. Supervisors and Operators Numerous supervisors will be required to direct crowd and provide first aid for emergency. Policeman might also be required to patrol certain area to ensure public safety. Furthermore, lighting and sound directors, host and other backstage assitance are required in order to successfully deliver the night performances.
