Kolaps Collapsable Herb Pot Collapsable Reusable Fun

Kolaps is designed for those who want to grow herbs at home without feeling pressured of maintenance. Made with LFGB certified platinum food grade silicone, Kolaps is dish washer safe and easy to store. With reusable pot, growing herbs has never been this easier. You will always be ready to have frest herbs at home!

DEVELOPMENT

Kolaps

C O N CE P T Collapsable, Reusable, Fun

Young, middle age who want to grow their own herbs at home. It’s also for those who tend to fail in growing plants. Once the herbs die, customers can throw away soil, put the pot in dishwasher or simply rinse it with water, then collapse the pot to store it in a drawer for the next herb growing time. My product will allow users to grow their own herbs but in more asthetic way. People will be able to use it as a container when not growing herbs.

At early ideation stage, I wanted to create an indoor herb pot with unique design opportunity with simple shape with repetition. Inspired by Chen and Kai x Areaware’s Stacking Planter and Light + Ladder’s Vayu Planter, I explored finding interesing convexity and concavity of geometric shapes.

MODELING Using Modo For Prototyping

Using Modo, I made sketch models that had simple shape with repetition. For the form language, I wanted to have smaller opening at the top and larger at the bottom so that it is more stable once the pot is pulled to full shape. Through prototyping in Modo and studying collapsable containers, I learned how parting lines work and where the creases should be located for the pot to be collapsable.

For the final design decision, I added larger rim at the top for more strength in structure. I also made the curve more straight so that it is easier for dirt to be cleaned in both dish washer and hand wash.

BLOOM Social Seating. In Collaboration With Brooklyn Museum.

BLOOM Social Seating Design Brooklyn Museum, NY Big BLOOM: 64 x 64 x 26 in Small BLOOM: 52 x 52 x 21 in

BLOOM is an indoor lounge seating designed for public space in the Brooklyn Museum. Inspired by flower petals, the form’s geometry is rooted in nature. Using plant pot and foam cushioning it is designed to be playful and durable, allowing visitors to be comfortable and relaxed.

DEVELOPMENT

BLOOM

C O N CE P T Playful, Durable, Social, Welcoming

BLOOM is designed to allow visitors to have emotional bond between themselves and the museum. The project was located on the first floor, the large space that people have to pass by in order to enter to the galleries. The theme of the collaboration was pop-up social seating. To make my design easy to move and install, I kept elements of BLOOM to be light weight, durable, and easy to clean using polypropylene plant pot and stain repellent/polyester upholstery fabrics. Initial concept was to make the social seating flipable to add more playfulness to the design. However, due to sanitary problems and safety issues, I attached hexagon structure at the bottom to really lock down the upper components to the base.

BLOOM

I D E AT I O N Early Process

Early goal for the project was to create an inflatable social seating. However due to durability and practical issues, I took key attributes such as bubble form, funness of inflated shape, etc and got inspired from them. As a result, I came up with collections of blooming shapes that pivots on center.

F O R M E X PLO R AT I O N Full Scale Physical Mock Up

After creating study model, I found out that planter pots that home depot carries have similar shape with the plastic cups I was making model with. Therefore, instead of building half or quarter scale model, I began to explore configuration with real size pots. I first combined three pots together then to seven, and more. For this study, I made holes at the bottom and top and used ropes to connect one pot to another. Also, I tested both blooming inward and outward forms to learn which was more comfortalbe to sit on and welcoming.

PR OTOT YPI N G Adding Structure To BLOOM Once I started to test weight that the form can bare, I learned that extra support is needed. Therefore, I designed a system using plywood, nuts and bolts, and screws to make the furniture more durable. Also, in order to give the pot more structure, I decided to use foam to fill the empty areas. Foams were cut into tapered shape and smaller diameter on the other side. Through this study, I found out that only the top parts of

the pots were needed to be fillled.

certain bottom edges and prevents the pots from cracking.

Covering Fabric For Seating Patterns were specially made for the foam. I worked with my friend from fashion department to create patterns for both small and large foams. Fabrics were chosen with careful attention to durability, resistency to stains, bugs, and easy to maintenance so that the Brooklyn museum will have less trouble of clean-

BLOOM

To make BLOOM more welcoming, bright yellow was chosen as the main color. Since the form of BLOOM resembled flower, I decided to create a social seating with flower-like color scheme. Most of the sewing was done using the industrial sewing machine but last two seams had to be hand sewn together. Since each foam was cut using band saw, all of the foams were slightly different from one another.

BLOOM

Drum-like Social Seating

BLOOM can also be enjoyed aurally because of its hollow seats. With its drum-like composition, BLOOM encourages a playful engagement especially among children. The seats create a deep echoing sound when tapped similar to a drum. Since BLOOM comes in two different sizes, each set makes drum-like sounds in varying pitches, promoting visitors to playfully interact with the furniture physically. BLOOM caters to the needs of people in all age groups as the furniture provides temporary, yet comfortable seating for adult visitors and playful engagement

for children.
