Documentation Erasmus Manifesto Developed by the 66 Erasmus Student and Staff Ambassadors for the 25th Anniversary of the Erasmus Programme, the manifesto highlights ten points to remember the results achieved in the 25 years and present actions to take in the future. http://ec.europa.eu/education/erasmus/doc/manifesto_en.pdf Social determinants of health and well-being among young people. Health Behaviour in School-aged Children The study examines the physical and mental health of children and teenagers from a sociological perspective. It provides a wealth of information and analysis, presenting findings on patterns of health among young people aged 11, 13 and 15 years in 43 countries across the WHO European Region and North America. http://www.euro.who.int/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/163857/Socialdeterminants-of-health-and-well-being-among-young-people.pdf ILO: Global Employment Trends for Youth 2012 The study examines the continuing job crisis affecting young people in many parts of the world. It provides updated statistics on global and regional youth unemployment rates and presents ILO policy recommendations to curb the current trends. Nearly 75 million youth are unemployed around the world, an increase of more than 4 million since 2007. Medium-term projections (2012–16) suggest little improvement in youth labour markets. By 2016 the youth unemployment rate is projected to remain at the same high level. http://tinyurl.com/c6lv9x7 Better Skills, Better Jobs, Better Lives. It also recommends to Member States to facilitate the internal and cross-border mobility of skilled workers. http://skills.oecd.org/documents/oecdskillsstrategy.html Claim Your Voice! Highlights European Parliament CULT Committee Calls for Separate Funding for Youth The European Parliament’s CULT (Education and Culture) Committee met on 29th May 2012 to discuss “Erasmus for All,” a programme recently proposed by the European Commission. Among other objectives, Erasmus for All would combine several existing programmes in the field of education, training and youth and increase current funding by 70%. Speaking on behalf of the Parliament, Committee Rapporteur Doris Pack MEP voiced concerns with the Commission’s proposal. Advocating for the continued distinction of programmes, MEP Pack stressed that it is of “the utmost importance to create a separate Chapter for Youth in the Proposal, as well as a separate budget line”. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/comm ittees/en/CULT/home.html EP Youth Intergroup Roundtable on How to Improve Internships and Apprentices On 16th May 2012 the Youth Intergroup of the European Parliament hosted a Roundtable on Internships and Apprenticeships to discuss the urgent need for quality standards. Speakers included European Parliament and Youth Intergroup Members Eider Gardiazabal, Karima Delli and Constance le Grip. MEP Constance le Grip highlighted the European Parliament’s legislative work on internships and apprenticeships. From the end of 2012 to 2014 the EU institutions will begin work on building a quality framework for such placements. Representatives from business also took part in the discussion. The message from the roundtable was that business and social partner involvement in the issue is vital to improve the quality of placements. The event was part of the European Youth Forum’s YO! Fest
Intern Action Day, to highlight the status of internships in Europe. European Parliament President Martin Schulz and MEP Emilie Turunen also participated in the event, lending their support to the European Charter on Quality Internships and Apprenticeships. http://tinyurl.com/8y3r4bw Have your say, join the "Facing Facts!" survey on hate speech and hate crime UNITED (the pan-European network against nationalism, racism, fascism and in support of migrants and refugees) has launched a survey "Facing Facts!" on hate speech and hate crime. The survey aims to find out about the current methodologies and going practices used by local, regional, national and umbrella organisations committed to combating and monitoring hate crime. It is composed of 33 questions, divided into 5 sections. It only takes 15 minutes to complete. The results remain anonymous and will be presented in a single overview document, and made available to other NGOs and governmental institutions in the field. The survey will be open until 15th June 2012 and is accessible from: http://www.ceji.org/facingfacts/?page _id=158 The EU and South Africa intensify cooperation in education and training On 17th May South Africa and the EU signed their Joint Declaration on Cooperation in Education and Training. The Declaration is the formal endorsement of years of rapidly intensifying collaboration among the two partners. The Declaration opens the way for cooperation across the entire education system but in the years ahead there will likely be a bias towards higher education and vocational education and training. Among the first focal areas for

intensified collaboration will be mobility and postgraduate education and research, equity and quality in education, quality assurance mechanisms and stakeholder involvement. Other fields that are explicitly mentioned in the agreement are recognition, credit transfer and accumulation, qualifications frameworks and the transparency and transferability of qualifications, teacher education, benchmarks, lifelong learning policies and strategies and vocational education and training. http://ec.europa.eu/education/news/2 0120523_en.htm
