An Anniversary Smile

Horia Crișan and Liviu Stănilă well immersed in the soil of whimsy, creators of humorous publications, are now celebrating the sunny part of their artistic activity: the 20th anniversary of the HumoDEVA Salons. Over the years, thousands of cartoonists from almost every country in the world have exhibited here. The interest has always been at an impressive level, because the artists of satirical graphics and caricature represent the intelligent, smiling part of social satire. Other festivals have organized art galleries in much more advantageous conditions and with a substantial material support, but unlike them, the Devean salons bear the imprint of tandem playful thinking, but also of the managerial generosity of Vali Ilyes. Humor will not perish, hot peppers will always be needed in the soup. It depends on who cooks it. I remain optimistic and make a wide lay cross, thinking about how much stupidity is around us.

C(aricat)urriculum Vitae Born in 1960 in Hunedoara, Romania. He started drawing and publishing cartoons in 1979. Qualified as engineer, he is now the general manager of CRISAN Publishing House. More than 500 international exhibitions in 55 countries. He won 138 prizes in 30 countries. Founder of Caricatura Magazine & HumoDEVA International Cartoon Contest. Owner of HumorPLA.NET. The first romanian cartoonist who started drawing on computer. Thirteen personal books published and more than 370 children’s books translated, adapted and published. He won 81 prizes in 23 countries. Co-Founder of Caricatura Magazine & HumoDEVA International Cartoon Contest. 8 personal books published and more than 50 children’s books ilustrated. More decades of competitions!

I have known the HumoDEVA event for many years, as a participant and also as a member of the jury, and I find that it has always stood out for its interesting themes and the great participation of authors from all over the world. Always scrupulous at an organizational level, the online exhibition has obtained an ever-increasing number of adhesions, presenting, thanks to a serious selection, the best of humor and world satire. In fact, as a member of the jury I have seen well how the well-oiled mechanism of the competition leads to welldeserved results and prizes, thanks to a severe and careful (and not easy!) analysis work... Obviously I wish the organizers of HumoDEVA many more decades of competitions!

HumoDEVA – The Citadel of Cartoon Contests

For 20 years, Deva has been producing one of the most important cartoon contest in the world – HumoDEVA. As is the Romanian tradition, it is very appreciated outside the country’s borders, and little known where it happens. Captain Horia Crișan and his lieutenant Liviu Stănilă have long retired to the HumoDEVA Citadel, where they defends theirs local humor and caricature, promoting them worldwide. From time to time, less and less, the two still receive some ammunition from their comrades-in-arms. On the anniversary hour, a traditional Romanian wish: Happy birthday! Resist! Stand on your own!

Why do I like Deva?

Because it has, I think, the largest number of cartoonists per square meter! I would list Gavco, Bâtcă, Stănilă and Crișan. Then, immediately after the Revolution, Râsu’ Lumii appeared, a humor magazine that we hunted at the kiosks. The „Liviu Oros” Humor Festival also takes place in Deva, one of the best and oldest genre festivals in Romania. Should I mention the HumoDEVA International Cartoon Contest and HumorPLA.NET, one of the coolest cartoon sites? I won’t tell you anymore! I think there are already enough arguments!

HumoDEVA – A brand of World Graphics Humor

Horia Crișan and Liviu Stănilă take advantage of the fact that the world is full of humor even when it is sad. Horică and Liviu found their therapeutic purpose to show us that not everything is lost, showing us that we can laugh instead of crying. The Cartoon Contest in Deva has been a brand of humorous and satirical graphics for many years. The tens of thousands of drawings that have „transited” over the years at the International Cartoon Contest in Deva represent an enormous spiritual potential, a gift to contemporaries and posterity. I am very proud and honored because I am among the friends of these two diligent students on the great estate of cartooning. Even though they haven’t given me a beer yet for the time that I taught them a few English lessons in Wolfsberg, Austria!

„I consider HumoDEVA to be among the top 3 best organized competitions!” I consider HumoDEVA International Cartoon Contest to be among the top 3 best organized competitions, along with „YOMIURI SHIMBUN” and International Salon of Cartoons, Montreal (unfortunately they don’t exist anymore). A well-organized contest should have a strong, independent jury with vast knowledge of cartoon history, as well as its contemporary progress, and nowadays HumoDEVA is the only competition that holds up to these standards. As someone who has been participating in this contest for more than a decade, I believe I am qualified to have this kind of opinion. Furthermore, HumoDEVA has an excellent website, a tradition of printing yearly calendars and catalogs on time, as well as excellent communication reliability and dedication. Once again, I wish you happy anniversaries, and a longlasting leadership in the field that we love and celebrate together!

HumoDEVA promoted only authentic art 20 years of cartooning have passed in Deva, which, through the HumoDEVA Contest, arrived on the world map of caricature with a contest that only promoted authentic art, with juries only by professionals.
