CORNWALL PARK’S £2.5M GREEN INVESTMENT GOES ON DISPLAY
Tregoad Holiday Park bosses have spent big on eco-friendly initiatives
Tregoad Holiday Park in Looe, Cornwall, celebrated the completion of a raft of new developments this summer by opening its doors to members of the local community. Representing an investment of £2.5 million, the initiatives were focused on sustainability, and the introduction of new ways to protect the natural world.
The family-owned park, part of the fourstrong Waterside group, chose a Saturday in July to showcase its achievements to guests which included members of the public, senior local authority and VisitCornwall representatives, and Tregoad’s local suppliers.
New features include the creation of Cornwall’s largest wildflower meadow bank covering more than 3,000 square metres, and seeded with high pollenbearing plants. Nectar produced by the blooms, says the park, will provide a valuable foraging resource for honey bees, butterflies, and other important pollinators.
In addition, the park has invested £300,000 in planting hundreds of indigenous plants, trees and shrubs, and installed a range of new wildlife habitats. The living quarters installed throughout the park’s grounds include three traditional beehives, duck houses, plus bird and bat boxes made from recycled materials
This year, the park is also spending £36,000 on upgrading its popular wildlife walk. The move will add an additional 2km to its length, allowing guests to explore even more of the park’s rich and varied landscape, and to uncover its wildlife secrets.
The balance of the £2.5 million spend was directed at other conservation work, landscaping, additional guest facilities, and the creation of a new gated development featuring energy-efficient holiday homes.
Matt Way, General Manager at Tregoad Holiday Park, said: “An important part of our guests’ experience is enjoying our wildlife, beautiful lakes, and woodland walks. We believe we have a responsibility to nurture and enhance our natural surroundings, helping Cornwall’s natural environment to thrive and contribute to a greener future.
“As well as focusing on wildlife and planting, we’ve been assessing everything that we do at Tregoad to ensure we’re operating as sustainably as possible.
“For example, we’ve introduced a new waste water treatment facility to allow the park to be self-sufficient, installed water refill taps, and reused construction materials across the site, such as our former toilet blocks which have been crushed and reused as road infill. We’re also continuing to work with Climate Vision to identify more ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint.”
Tregoad Holiday Park works with more than 50 local suppliers, including Flotsam Flo which creates fashion accessories from waste which is difficult to recycle. Items are taken in, including old wetsuits, which are then upcycled by Flotsam Flo to be sold in its shop. The park is the first holiday park in the UK to go ‘full cycle’ in recycling, upcycling, and redistributing in such a manner.
Through its partnership with Flotsam
Flo, the park is aiming to reduce its landfill by a further 10% this year – after diverting 80 tonnes of waste from going to landfill between 2022 and 2023 through switching to alternative waste companies.
Matt continued: “Collaboration is key to helping us tackle climate change. We’re proud to be working with like-minded businesses which champion sustainability and consider their environmental impact when planning their future investment and areas of growth.
“Our sustainability efforts complement our wider enhancement works at Tregoad. Over the past two years, we’ve introduced 100 new high-quality holiday homes and invested more than £500,000 in improving our guest facilities. Our holiday accommodation and facility improvements, alongside our sustainability initiatives, are helping us achieve our core objective of delivering an exceptional quality holiday experience,” said Matt.
Tregoad Holiday Park has introduced a new and exclusive gated development this year called Samphire Cove. The space features 12 holiday homes with luxury features including private decking and hot tubs, all of which overlook the park’s iconic valley.
Tregoad Holiday Park was acquired by family-run Waterside group in 2020, representing the company’s fourth holiday park and its first in Cornwall. Under the ownership of the Jacobs family since 1963, the company celebrated its 60th birthday in 2023.
CAPITAL IDEA TAKES LUXURY HOLIDAY HOMES TO HEART OF LONDON
Two of the best-known names in holiday home ownership joined forces this summer to show Londoners how they could be making the most of their leisure time
Londoners.
“Yet people in the capital have quick and easy access to some of Britain’s most delightful locations and holiday parks where they can enjoy quality time with family and friends.
“That’s why we wanted to come to London to meet people living and working here, and to give them the chance to see what they’re missing out on!”
Peter also carried out a series of interviews with London-based journalists during the event, resulting in extra positive publicity about Willerby’s “wow” factor.
Park Holidays UK has invested significantly over recent years in its 55plus UK parks, many of which are located in popular coastal and countryside areas across the South and South East.
Leading manufacturer Willerby and major holiday parks group Park Holidays UK took two top-spec holiday homes into the capital to demonstrate just what was now on offer.
And for three days, visitors to Southbank Centre Square near the side of the Thames were able to get a glimpse of the leisurely lifestyle already enjoyed by thousands of people.
Advisers from Willerby invited couples and families to step inside the holiday
homes and see for themselves the spacious, fully equipped interiors and contemporary decor and furnishings.
And members of the Park Holidays UK team outlined the huge choice of countryside and coastal locations where the models could be sited, often less than two hours from London.
Peter Munk, CEO of Hull-based Willerby, said: “Staycations and holiday homes have been incredibly popular for many years, but there’s still relatively low ownership by
Rachel Conaghan, head of holiday home sales marketing at the group, said: “It was great to team up with Willerby to promote holiday home ownership to Londoners, and to dispel some of the myths that still exist.
“The partnership worked very well in showcasing the quality of accommodation, and the way in which a park-based holiday home can help strike a perfect work-life balance.
“People were very impressed both with the superb quality of what Willerby provides, and the glorious locations which we can offer for regularly escaping the pressures of urban living,” said Rachel.
ELECTRIC VEHICLE RIDES FOR CHILDREN COULD DRIVE NEW REVENUE STREAM
Leisure destinations are missing out on £180m annually
Anew analysis has shown the leisure sector in the UK is missing out on up to £180m a year in additional revenue from electric vehicles for children.
The study was undertaken by Aqualand Industries to highlight the benefits of creating incremental revenue streams in holiday and theme parks, camping sites and other leisure destinations.
Aqualand’s research estimates the average holiday park could generate £6,000 a month, or £36,000 over a six-month season, from a six vehicle facility.
The addition of electric vehicles for children can also enhance the customer experience and benefit children by fostering social skills, enhancing cognitive development, promoting physical health, and boosting creativity.
Commenting on the data, Carl Byford, general manager of Aqualand Industries, said: “With many companies facing the challenges of the rising cost of business, it’s essential that additional revenue opportunities are explored. Electric vehicles for children require a small area to serve as
a track and require minimal maintenance. Our customers range from family campsites to the largest holiday park operators in the UK, and it’s clear that electric vehicles provide a sustainable revenue stream.”
Operators of UK holiday parks are in a prime position to optimise profits and expand their target audiences by drawing in more guests. The pandemic and Brexit have created a staycation boom, and there is pressure on operators to invest in new attractions to keep guests entertained. While investing in onsite activities will help to maximise visitor spend.
A growing number of holiday parks are investing in renewable energy sources like wind turbines, solar panels, and biomass boilers to reduce operating costs and draw in ecologically conscious visitors. Renewable energy vastly reduces the costs of charging electric vehicles of all sizes.
Aqualand Industries works in partnership with leisure destinations to help them drive additional revenue. The company offers leasing, full purchase or a mixture of both to provide operators with the
flexibility they need to introduce the range of products. The Crazi-bugz and Adventure Trukz are designed for children aged from four to 14 years old. Each vehicle comes with a host of safety features to keep riders safe.
Aqualand Industries also provides maintenance and service to its customers for its products and other kit operated by the customer at its locations.
Experienced engineers manufacture the vehicles in Holmfirth to ensure they are robust and meet exacting standards. It owns a number of patents for leisure vehicles, including a motorised surfboard.
Carl concluded: “While there is no easy fix to the complex challenges posed by increasing costs, rising customer expectations, and staffing pressures, leveraging the revenue opportunities provided by electric vehicles will help to unlock the potential of every site. The tracks are developed using existing land and infrastructure to minimise the initial investment, it’s a very cost-effective to drive new revenue.”
WILLERBY UNVEILS FIRST SUSTAINABILITY REPORT BY HOLIDAY HOMES MANUFACTURER
East Yorkshire firm reveals raft of carbon cutting measures
forward to reduce the environmental impact of the business.
Willerby CEO Peter Munk said: “Publishing our first annual Sustainability Report is a major milestone in our journey to a low carbon future.
“It’s a very significant commitment and statement of continuing intent, particularly as issues around sustainability are especially challenging for major manufacturing businesses such as ours.
The first Willerby Sustainability Report details the extensive measures taken by the business, which employs almost 1,200 people at its sites in Hull. These include:
Holiday homes industry innovator
Willerby has become the first manufacturer in the sector to publish a Sustainability Report, detailing its mission to combat climate change and cut carbon.
Willerby said the move underlined its commitment to making sustainability a cornerstone of the business and to working with partners to pave the way to a green future for the holiday homes industry.
It’s the first time Willerby has formally and publicly reported the progress it is making in tackling climate change and reducing carbon emissions, as well as the investments it is making in its people and local community.
Willerby has now committed to publishing the Sustainability Report on an annual basis, so that customers, employees and stakeholders can see the full range of initiatives it is driving
“Sustainability is now fully integrated into how we conduct our business. Everything we do revolves around our Products, People and Place and this is how we will continue to build a successful and sustainable business.
Longer-term ambitions include moving towards being energy selfsufficient at Willerby’s sites in Hull through a combination of further investments in biomass plants, solar panels and wind turbines. These measures are expected to reduce annual emissions by 16% compared to 2022.
The report also outlines the significant role Willerby is playing, as a major local employer and key player in the region’s economy, in the Humber’s journey to net zero.
To find out more about the Willerby’s commitment to sustainability, go to www.willerby.com/corporate/ sustainability
• Launching the Willerby GreEN Standard, the industry’s first sustainability specification, across all Willerby’s holiday homes. The Willerby GreEN Standard delivers a 28% reduction in energy usage with 250kg less carbon emitted each year for each holiday home, making it better for the planet and the pocket.
• A further major product innovation focused on enabling the transition from liquid petroleum gas (LPG) to electricity on holiday parks.
• Investing in two biomass boilers to heat manufacturing facilities at Willerby’s main site in Hull, powered by wood offcuts from production processes.
• 96% of total waste recycled or recaptured in 2022.
• 80% of suppliers from East Yorkshire or the wider Humber region, reducing transport impacts on the environment while supporting the local economy.
• Products built to order, not for stock, thereby reducing waste and maximising efficiency.
• A successful transition from plywood (derived from tropical hardwood forests) to “Eco-board”, a recycled product.
• Switching all of Willerby company cars to electric or hybrid vehicles, supported by a network of electric vehicle (EV) charging points on site.
• Reducing carbon emissions from travel to and from work through hundreds of staff taking up the company’s cycle to work incentive.
The report also sets out a raft of further sustainability initiatives currently being implemented or planned to be introduced, including:
• Installing solar panels on Willerby’s head office building to power the offices and EV charging network.
• Replacing fluorescent lighting with low energy LED lighting, combined with motion and occupancy sensors, to reduce energy consumption in all working areas.

HOW TO CHOOSE A TIMBER CANOPY FOR YOUR OUTDOOR DINING AREA
Timber canopies are extremely popular within holiday parks as they have a modern, yet natural appearance and are robust structures that are made to last for many years. When it comes to choosing a timber canopy, there are a number of features you should keep in mind to ensure you make the right investment which includes:
1. Material and Finish
Check to see what the final feel of the timber will be like. Ask for timber which has been planed to a smooth finish, or choose a glu-laminated canopy which has a very smooth finish with no risk of splinters.
2. Framework Fixings
For the best-looking canopy,
use a supplier who can offer invisible fixings – these are internal fixings which are created using specially designed timber mullions.
3. Floor Fixings
Timber is very susceptible to rot and weathering and so it is vitally important to choose canopies that have a steel connection to the ground which means no timber touches the floor.
4. Sustainable Sourcing
Ideally choose a suppler who sources their timber from source which has a recognised forestry certification such as PEFC.
Timber Canopies from Able Canopies
Able Canopies supply and
install a superb range of sustainable, commercial timber canopies which are constructed from the highest quality glulaminated timber.

INTRODUCING COMPOSITE FENCING: EMBRACE THE LONGER LASTING OPTION
You have probably heard of composite decking, but have you heard of composite fencing?
Composite fencing sales are up 30% year on year as homeowners look for
longer lasting alternatives to their fencing needs. The more durable product is a great
strategic option for businesses too, allowing fenced areas to remain in good condition with virtually no maintenance required compared with wooden fencing. The lifespan of composite fencing is likely to be far greater than traditional wood panels also.
Here are the top 5 reasons why composite fencing is a trend you can’t ignore…
1. Long-Lasting Colour Stability: With superior colour retention, composite fencing boasts exceptional longevity, ensuring a lasting appeal for your garden.
2. Enhanced Durability: Designed to withstand all weathers, composite fencing outperforms traditional materials, making it highly resilient and sturdy.
3. Low Maintenance and EcoFriendly: Embrace sustainability with composite fencing, as it requires minimal upkeep while being environmentally conscious.
4. Paint-Free Solution: Bid farewell to tiresome painting, staining, and sealing. Composite fencing frees you from these arduous tasks, saving both time and money in the long run.
5. Modern Aesthetics:
Composite fencing injects a contemporary charm into your garden, reviving its appearance and providing an enduring, low-maintenance fencing solution.
Leading composite decking specialists, Ultra Decking, completely sold out of composite fencing in under 3 weeks earlier this year. “The feedback from customers has been incredible, we think it’s a fantastic product and are excited to see it continue to grow in popularity,” said Allan Jeffrey, Managing Director from Ultra Decking.
Ultra Decking says their most ordered colour in the last few months has been chocolate brown, showing that people are moving away from brightly coloured fences we’ve recently seen, to a sleeker more natural colour that blends more smoothly with nature. Ultra Decking has 4 shades available for composite fencing; grey, anthracite grey, black and chocolate.

HMG PAINTS LAUNCHES NEW PRODUCTS TO SOLVE RUST AND FLOORING CHALLENGES
HMG Paints has announced two new products that could aid caravan and holiday park operators looking to refurbish their premises and accommodation
areas.
James Burton of HMG Paints commented: “We’re very excited by the launch of our new HydroPro Floor Paint with its superior drying and recoat times, this offers so many possibilities for the professional decorator and maintenance teams. It’s a real alternative for solvent based floor paints.
“This is the first product that is part of a new portfolio we’ve been putting together for the professional decorator and light industrial market and we’re excited to reveal even more in the coming months.”
The Manchester based firm has relaunched Ferrozinc, a revolutionary water-based rust converter. With its exceptional performance and ease of use, Ferrozinc is the go-to solution for rust conversion in areas where shot blasting, or complete rust removal is impractical or impossible.
Traditionally, rust removal has been a laborious and time-consuming process, involving hours of wire brushing or the use of strong acidic chemicals that pose significant safety hazards. With HMG’s Ferrozinc rust converter, however, this arduous task becomes a thing of the past.
Users only need to remove loose debris and poorly adhered surface rust, followed by a degreasing step to eliminate any contamination that may interfere with the chemical reaction. Afterward, a thin coat of Ferrozinc is applied to the rusted area, and within 30 minutes, the surface transforms into a black/navy colour, indicating the successful rust conversion. Any excess product can be easily wiped off, and after just +3 hours, the treated surface is ready to be overcoated with the user’s preferred coating system.
Ferrozinc’s water-based formulation not only provides excellent rust conversion properties but also ensures a low odour, making it a more pleasant and userfriendly option compared to solvent-based alternatives.
Meanwhile, HMG has also brought a range of new floor paints to the market in recent months.
HydroPro Floor paint boasts a unique
formula that combines the strength of cross-linking technology with the convenience of water-based application. This innovation results in a tough, hardwearing mid-sheen finish that’s ideal for a variety of spaces, from domestic garages and workshops to light-industrial environments.
Once cured, HydroPro Floor Paint becomes resistant to oils, grease, and light industrial traffic, providing a long-lasting solution for a number of
One of the standout features of HydroPro Floor Paint is its remarkable fast drying times, allowing professionals to apply multiple coats within a single day. This not only expedites the painting process but also minimises downtime, enabling quicker project completion. With HydroPro, efficiency and quality go hand in hand.
HydroPro Floor Paint is available directly from HMG via shop.hmgpaint.com or via their ever-expanding network of specifically chosen distributors. All of HMG Paints portfolio is Made in Britain certified and is produced entirely at its Riverside Works factory in Manchester.
HMG has also launched a new Product Tester campaign where users can sign up to get early access to new HMG products you can sign up via.: https://shop.hmgpaint. com/product-tester-sign-up-page
STILL WATERS RUN RISKS
To maintain a clean, healthy water supply, you must comply with ACoP L8, the Approved Code of Conduct for Legionella control, which includes regular flushing and testing for Legionella bacteria.
Legionella bacteria can breed in static water, so you must ensure that water can flow freely throughout your entire water system, serving shared public areas such as showers, toilets and cafes, as well as every caravan. Flushing must be carried out routinely throughout any season especially when facilities are infrequently used.
Each site must have an appointed Responsible Person to do everything expected in law to ensure that the water system complies with the Approved Code of Practice for Legionnaires’
Disease(L8). This is issued by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and is legally enforceable.
Every caravan site owner or manager
In a caravan park, the only thing that you really want to be static is the caravans. You certainly don’t want any areas of your domestic water systems to be static, as Gary Nicholls, MD of Legionella risk experts Swiftclean, explains.Image courtesy of Swiftclean
KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON FLUSHING…
By the Water Hygiene CentreThe Health and Safety Executive (HSE) consider Legionnaires disease to be a preventable disease and it’s therefore treated as such by the law. Moreover, health and safety law underpins the statutory obligations of; duty holders, employers or those in control of premises which pose a risk to occupiers with respect to acquiring Legionnaires’ disease.
Legionella Training - What does the guidance say?
The Approved Code of Practice (ACoP L8) provides specific advice on the health and safety law which applies and the associated duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and HSG274 (Parts 1,2 &3) provide prescriptive guidance notes on how to comply with these duties – stressing that compliance is the ‘minimum requirement’ and should the recommendations detailed in HSG274 not be followed then compliance will need to be demonstrated by other means – in order to satisfy the HSE that risk has been suitably mitigated.
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 also provides a broad framework for controlling health and safety at work and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
Regulations 2002 (COSHH) provides a framework for mitigating risks associated with hazardous substances – including biological agents such as Legionella.
COSHH identifies a requirement to provide a risk assessment and highlights the importance of preventing or controlling hazardous substances in as far as what’s considered reasonable and practicable, whilst stressing the importance of ensuring that staff are suitably trained on the risks associated with hazardous substances.
These considerations form the backbone of Legionella risk assessments (conforming to the requirements of BS8580) for which there is a legal requirement under health and safety law. Therefore, as Legionnaires’ disease is a foreseeable and preventable risk which can be suitably mitigated by a mandated management process - detailed in the site-specific risk assessment, a lack of knowledge is not considered a reasonable legal defence when individuals are affected by this pathogen as a result of poorly managed water distribution systems.
How important is Legionella Training?
Moreover, should acquiring this pathogen prove to be fatal – following a period of exposure from a poorly maintained water system and it’s beyond
‘all reasonable doubt’ that this pathogen was acquired from such a system then this may be considered a ‘criminal offence’ tantamount to manslaughter - possibly resulting in imprisonment and a financial penalty for the duty holder and or those responsible for providing microbiologically safe water (depending on the devolution of responsibility within the hierarchy of authority within an organisation).
It’s therefore of paramount importance that; all buildings comprising of a water distribution system are suitably assessed for Legionella risk and that all individuals with a responsibility (operationally and managerially) for the provision of microbiologically safe water, understand their role within the organisation’s hierarchy of authority and work together to deliver a service that; protects the public from waterborne pathogens such as Legionella and complies with the law.
Consequences of no training
Multiple organisations from healthcare providers to local authorities have been prosecuted for legionella failings, some of which have been attributed to deaths of vulnerable people. Fines and compensation payments have been issued in excess of six figures in many cases.

SAVE ON HOT TUB HEATING THIS WINTER
Efficient Golden Coast air source heat pumps keep hot tub temperatures high and bills low even in colder months
If you have hot tubs on your holiday park you’ll know how popular they are with guests. And as lovely as it is to sit in a hot tub on a long summer evening, there’s something to be said for enjoying a hot tub on a winter night as the steam rises into the chilly air.
But if the thought of operating your hot tubs in winter sends shivers up your spine and conjures visions of expensive energy bills, consider switching to an air source heat pump.
The Golden Coast inverter-driven heat
pump is designed to perform exceptionally well in any weather and keep costs low.
The high-efficiency hot tub heat pump runs on a nominal current so uses less electricity compared to standard electric heaters. That’s because one of the most significant advantages of the Golden Coast heat pump is its ability to reach a high coefficient of performance regardless of outside temperature. It can quickly heat water up to 40°C so the hot tub is ready to enjoy in no time. Once the water reaches the desired temperature, the heat pump
intelligently switches off while maintaining the set temperature — thereby minimising energy consumption and ensuring optimal performance.
And don’t worry about damage from the winter elements. Golden Coast heat pumps have even been tested in cold temperatures as low as -15°C. The robust PVC heat pump is built with durable materials and benefits from titanium heat exchangers which are highly resistant to corrosion by salt, chlorine and bromine. Plus, a heater tray element protects the machine in colder months.
“Many guests enjoy sitting in a hot tub on a crisp winter evening, but park owners don’t enjoy the energy bills that come later,” says Adam Clark, General Manager of Golden Coast. “With a Golden Coast heat pump you can track and control energy usage using the 5-inch touchscreen display, so there are no surprises down the line. What’s more, the powerful pump incorporates an efficient rotary compressor and multi-speed fan motor that allows it to stay extremely quiet, ensuring it won’t disturb the peace and tranquillity of the hot tub experience. It’s a win-win for everyone.
“So, if you’re looking to extend your hot tub season into winter and enable guests to enjoy year-round use, a Golden Coast heat pump could be ideal for you. Our hot tub heat pumps have been used in holiday parks around the UK for years with amazing results. And the more hot tubs you have, the greater the savings.”
The Golden Coast heat pump comes in five model sizes ranging from 12 to 28kW, making it suitable for a variety of hot tub and pool sizes.
