Editor’s
LETTER
Hello all and welcome to the third edition of Fireplace Specialist magazine.
It may be August but as I write this it’s grey, drizzly and about 14 degrees - if only I had a woodburning stove in my office!
It’s been a poor summer for most of us, not helped by the never ending clickbait weather forecasts that keep telling us there’s a heatwave around the corner. Sadly, any bursts of sun have only lasted a matter of hours and we’re now starting to feel the chill of autumn around the corner.
How has your summer been - has the weather affected sales at all? With the colder days and darker nights closing in, it should be time for trade to pick up. But will it be as strong as last year? ‘Unlikely’, I think most people would say, but you never know, more people could convert to solid fuel heating this winter as gas prices haven’t fallen as fast as many would like. Anyway, good luck for the new heating season - I hope business is healthy and if you want to feature in our magazine please get in touch.
In this edition, we have the first column from a high profile sweep some of you may have heard of - Mr Soot - aka David Sudworth. David is a former journalist who swapped careers to launch a chimney sweep business more than a decade ago. I’m happy to say he’s agreed to write a column in all our magazines going forward, giving you the latest news and views from the frontline of his sweep and training business in the North West.
Meanwhile, another chimney sweep found himself in the national media recently after he found a very modern way of adapting his business to get around the controversial London ULEZ charge. You can read about it on page 20/21.
The last piece I want to highlight is our nice feature about how successful Suffolk stove firm, Pevex, is handling business succession now that founder Adrian Hockley is looking to move on.

DRU contemporary gas stove collection now with five models
DRU Fires, based in The Netherlands, is one of Europe’s leading fireplace companies with a large portfolio of contemporary gas, electric and wood burning fires and stoves.
DRU has reported an upsurge in the sales of gas stoves due to several factors. This includes people switching from wood burning due to the convenience of gas, the expectation that gas prices will stabilise this winter and the flexibility of the balanced flue system, which means that gas stoves can be installed in many locations around the home.
The DRU gas stove collection now includes five models:
Convexo
Convexo is a curvaceous, one-metre-high stove with a 3-sided fire view and a sleek black colour finish. It has an A rated energy label, is 91% energy efficient and can be run on mains gas or LPG
Trio
Trio has a 3-window fire view, with a fashionable new black finish. The mirrored Ceraglass interior adds greater depth to the flame picture and has a B rated energy label with 85% energy efficiency.
Circo
Circo is an elegant gas stove with an oval design and an expansive viewing window, revealing a classic log fire
with high, dramatic flames and generous warmth. It has an A energy rating and 92% efficiency
Passo
Passo is a sleek, cylindrical gas stove with a large, wraparound viewing window framing a gorgeous log fire bed. As well as an A energy rating and high efficiency, it is also available in five external colour finishes to compliment almost any décor.
Polo
Polo is a robust and stylish rectangular shaped gas stove, suitable for traditional or modern homes. Its 4-kw heat output makes it suitable for smaller living spaces and it has a convenient remote control with room temperature setting.
All the stoves are balanced flue appliances and, apart from the Polo, have the exclusive DRU Eco Wave operating system. This enables the user to control the flame pattern, flame height and room temperature using the remote control or an app for smartphones and tablets.

Fireplace industry urged to back Chimney Fire Safety Week
Fears that people will use unsuitable fuels as cost of living crisis bites
The Fire Kills campaign will be promoting relevant messages throughout Chimney Fire Safety Week from 4 to 10 September.
Given the cost-of-living rise, people may explore using alternative methods to heat their homes, which might impact the use of chimneys.
Ensuring these are safe and ready for use is important, so the primary message of the Week will be to encourage people to have their chimneys swept in preparation for use over winter.
Awareness and Action
Ultimately the campaign strives to raise awareness of chimney fires and encourage consumers to act. The campaign focuses on the importance of chimney sweeping and appliance maintenance, the use of quality fuels and tips to get the most efficiency from a stove.
Having a chimney swept not only reduces the fire risk, but also enables more efficient combustion saving you money by reducing the amount of fuel used and reduces emissions helping the environment and the air we breathe.
The sweep will offer bespoke advice to the householder on the use of their appliance, the correct use of fuels to gain maximum heat and warmth from their appliance.
Partnership working with the Federation of British Chimney Sweeps
The Federation of British Chimney (FBCS) and its association members is committed to providing a unified
voice and single point of contact for the chimney sweep trade.
Its member association covers more than 80% of registered chimney sweeps within England, Scotland and Wales and works in partnership with the major stakeholders within industry to raise standards through formal qualification (NVQ) and promote the essential services of the chimney sweep.
The “Speak to a Sweep!” campaign has been specifically developed to deliver public information campaigns such as Chimney Fire Safety Week through partnership working with other industry stakeholders such as ClearSkies, Stove Industry Alliance, British Flue and Chimney Manufacturers and the Sweep Associations. The FBCS association members are sweeping, servicing, and maintaining flues and appliances in 10,000 homes each working day helping to keep the householder safe and warm.

Soots You
By David Sudworth,
Owner or Mr Soot Chimney Sweep and Training Centre.
Welcome to my first column for Fireplace Specialist Magazine - I hope you enjoy it!
There’s plenty to talk about in our industry at the best of times, but this year seems to be busier than normal.
This is partly down to the massive increase in demand for woodburners and multi-fuel stoves since last year’s gas price hikes. But also, there’s movement in the industry, especially on the sweeping side.
For my own part, as the owner of Mr Soot, we’ve been making our own advances towards helping professionalise the industry.
Job’s A Good ‘Un!
In January we recruited our latest employee and have just put out another advert for an additional sweep. That means that soon, we should have four chimney sweep technicians at Mr Soot.
As someone who started out as a one-man band, I sometimes have to stop and pinch myself at how far
things have come in recent years.
I often get other one-man (and women) bands asking me what it’s like to take on staff and grow a business.
I always answer by saying that it entirely depends on you as a person.
There are some people who, through no fault of their own, are just not cut out to have staff. That is in no way meant to be patronising, but to take on staff you sometimes have to completely change your mindset and outlook.
You have to trust people; you have to be comfortable not knowing every minute detail of your business. And you also have to enjoy watching people learn, grow and develop. Sometimes, you don’t know how you’ll react until you try. But I know that our company is much better for it.
New Training Centre
Alongside recruiting new sweep technicians the Mr Soot team has spent the last few months preparing
our brand new HETAS approved training centre for its big unveiling. Located in Wigan town centre, it has been specially-designed with a variety of solid fuel training rigs, classroom, meeting room and offices over two floors.
As a HETAS approved centre, it is able to offer a selection of HETAS courses.
We’ve just announced our first batch of courses (Ed - see article on page ???) and we are also set to host business workshops and seminars for sole traders, micro businesses and SMEs at the venue.
And it will be home to our in-house Training Academy Programme; an intensive pathway to a career in the industry for the company’s new sweep technicians.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’ve had plenty of bookings to date. More details can be found at www. mrsoottraining.com
A Fresh Take
As a chimney sweep trainer, I get to see a lot of newbies to the industry. This year has been particularly busy for that, and it’s always interesting to observe how they perceive the industry as a fresh pair of eyes.
I have to say, many of them are a mixture of befuddled and bemused
Page 14 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine
by the amount of industry politics which goes on in certain areas. They sense, usually from social media, that something is going on but they can rarely make head nor tail of it.
Most new sweeps just want to get on, learn the job and do their best. They’re not particularly into ‘my way is better than your way’ arguments.
I’ve always said that being professional is as much about how you conduct yourself when ‘off the tools’ as well as on them.
Thankfully, most believe that as well. And the industry is much better for it.
Joe’s
Journeys
Speaking of professionalism, I had the pleasure of welcoming Joe Gomez, aka The Sweep Master, to the North West recently.
Joe travelled from Essex to shadow me for a few days. He’s no stranger to travelling for work, having spent weeks in the USA undertaking their sweeping exams and shadowing sweep technicians over there.
It’s clear Joe is a man on a mission –to be the best he can be, to not waste time and also to make the industry better.
We talked about what training they have in America and his view that, having seen it first hand, it is superior to what we have over here. And he wants to change that.
I won’t spoil it too much by going over it here – we had a good chat on my Trade Entrepreneur Podcast,
which you can access at www.tradeentrepreneur.co.uk
On Yer Bike!
It was great to see London’s oldest chimney sweeping firm, H. Firkins & Sons, securing some national publicity on the BBC with their new e-bike (Also on page 20/21 if you haven’t seen it yet!)
Having shadowed Josh, the great, great, great grandson of the company’s founder, around the capital, I can see how this new mode
of transport is much more appealing than a van.
Horrific traffic, difficult parking and the ludicrous Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) make doing business there a nightmare.
And of course, the extension of the low emission zone (ULEZ) to the entirety of London is yet another challenge for the area’s already hardpressed tradespeople.
And Finally…
As a company, we’ve started sponsoring some local football teams; West Didsbury & Chorlton FC, Marine FC, and Ashton Town FC.
The latter has introduced a new ‘Grab A Grand’ competition, whereby fans can win the chance of scooping a £1,000 cash prize.
The catch? They have to kick the ball from the penalty spot and get it to land bang on the kick-off spot. How hard can that be?
Well, both myself and our office manager Sam were invited to be the first to have a go to ‘Grab A Grand’ at our recent sponsorship launch.
I won’t reveal here how we got on, but there’s a video of our efforts, in all their glory, on our Mr Soot Chimney Sweep Facebook page.
Suffice to say, I’m not surprised my career as a footballer never flourished beyond secondary school!
There will be more from Mr Soot in the next edition. You can contact him via email: david@mrsoottraining.com

Wood Fuel Specialist Makes its Business Smarter
Logs Direct scoops Gold and Silver accolades at the Made Smarter Awards 2023
Leading wood fuel supplier, Logs Direct has won two awards on the basis of the digital transformation it has pursued to drive manufacturing improvements and business growth.
The Lancaster-based business - a supplier of a comprehensive range of wood-fuel products, all certified as ‘Ready to Burn’, plus complementary and ancillary products - was one of the first 19 SME manufacturing businesses to receive a Gold award from Made Smarter.
This recognised Logs Direct’s investment in a real-time kiln monitoring system that also encompasses heat recovery. The installation of this new technology has helped to significantly reduce the energy required for the wood-drying process, by around 15% and helped to make the whole process much greener.
A further investment of over £80,000 of new technology has been devoted to the kiln-drying process. The technology moves hot air around
within the kiln, so that all the logs are dried evenly. It then records the humidity in the air and the length of time taken by the drying cycles, it extracts all of the wet, hot air from the kiln, removes the moisture and returns the air back to the kiln as dry, warm air to be used again and again.
This process continues to help ensure that all of the wood that is dried meets new Defra conditions relating to moisture content in wood. It enables all Logs Direct customers to buy with confidence and understand that the wood is not just dried correctly but also as efficiently and ecologically as possible.
The investment in this technology has paved the way for even more eco-friendly products to be introduced in the future and has provided all the business benefits that accrue from improved efficiencies. It opens up new market opportunities for Logs Direct and business growth of 15% is now predicted in the coming year, which will in turn lead to more job creation.
This latest development at the UK’s leading wood specialist is another sign of Logs Direct never standing still. Since its establishment, it has always incorporated leading-edge technology into its production regime, so as to create and offer better products and optimise its capacity. This has come at significant cost but the investment has always driven the business to another level and helped earn the trust of trading partners.
The business has similarly been relentless in solving the many issues relating to raw materials that have emerged over the past 10 years and particularly since Covid-19 and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Logs Direct has somehow managed to successfully steer its ship through the choppiest of global supply waters.
By optimising its manufacturing approach and continually striving to decarbonise its operation as much as possible, the company has been able to launch innovative and relevant products and secure contracts with some of the country’s leading retailers and brands.
Sales director, Stephen Talbot, says, “The Made Smarter Awards are testament to our desire to incorporate digital solutions within our business, so as to continually drive improvement and deliver product excellence. We are grateful for the support that Made Smarter provided, to help us achieve our latest decarbonisation and growth goals but can assure customers that the road to greater efficiency through technology does not stop here.”
The business will continue to offer customers as many best-in-class fuel options as possible, via www. logsdirect.co.uk and its trade brand of Warma Home Fuels, delivering bespoke solutions whenever required and offering informed, specialist advice on any wood-related products. To access this expertise, just call Logs Direct on 01524 812476.

London’s oldest chimney sweep firm turns back clock to beat modern day tax headache
Josh Firkin has turned to bicycle power to get around the Big Smoke’s pollution charge.
The great, great, great grandson of a historic chimney sweep firm has turned back the clock, but for very modern reasons.
H. Firkins & Sons used to use bikes to get around London when they first started plying their trade in 1860.
In those days it was the tens of
thousands of polluting fires that gave the capital its smokey reputation. Now, more than 150 years on and London is facing a new invisible smog, not from wood burning stoves but from the millions of vehicles on the capital’s roads.
In a bid to avoid the Mayor’s
controversial air pollution tax of £12.50 a day, H.Firkins & Sons chief, Josh Firkin, has decided to mostly travel by bike - albeit a very modern electronic cargo bike worth a stunning £16,000.
The bike allows Josh, a sixth generation sweep whose great, great,
Page 20 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine
great grandfather founded the firm he now runs, to avoid the ULEZ charge and the Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) restrictions which have plagued local trades for years.
Josh said he took the plunge to switch to pedal power after it was confirmed that ULEZ charges would be extended to the whole of Greater London on August 29.
He said: “Like most trades, we’ve been using vans to get to jobs around London for years. But in the past 10 years, it’s become a complete nightmare.
“Journeys which used to take five minutes now routinely take 30 or 40 minutes. That’s a combination of the traffic and the LTNs.
“The extended ULEZ charges were the last straw. Our patch is across North London, but very often around Southgate, Finchley and Enfield – all areas which had so far not been included in ULEZ charges.
“That’s obviously all going to change, so we decided to act.”
The e-bike, which costs almost as much as a van, is powered by a battery which allows users to complete over 40 miles a day, at
speeds up to 15 mph. It has space in the back for all of Josh’s sweeping equipment.
And with parking no longer a problem, it’s proving a massive hit with customers as well.
“Many stop and take photos on their mobiles, and I was recorded for about 10 minutes by a child hanging out of the back window of a car
once,” continued Josh.
“People have a natural curiosity about chimney sweeps anyway, but this takes it to a whole new level.
“As a trade, we’ve used primarily the same equipment – rods and brushes – for generations. So it seems that, in terms of how we’re getting around, it’s gone full circle as well.”

The Bronpi range of woodburning stoves
Firepower have now been asked if they would take over the UK marketing of Bronpi and have been very pleased to accept.
The classic stove that Bronpi is known for is the Huelva, the magnificant four sided freestanding model that is a ‘must have’ for customers wanting a focal point in a large open plan design, and today it is even available in a ceiling hung version. The backbone of Bronpi’s range for this market, however, are the beautifully designed traditional cast iron stoves with large viewing windows and generous outputs like the Derby, the Preston and the extraordinary three windowed Bury. Their cleanlined steel models such as the Sena Plus and Gijon are perfect examples of modern-style box stoves and Bronpi’s highly contemporary Bombay range, with their uniquely square vertical design with one, two, or three windows, are stunning
in a modern setting. Equally up to date and elegant are the Cairo range of inserts, going from a 70 cm width to over a metre wide and with single and double sided options.
As the energy price-rises bit last winter there was a big increase in demand for stoves with an oven and hotplates and the Monza, Suiza and Tudela models started flying off the shelves. High profile North West chimney sweep firm takes ‘massive step forward’ with new training facility
Mr Soot opens HETAS accredited training centre in Wigan
A leading chimney sweep firm is offering the chance for people to train for a career as a chimney sweep.
Mr Soot has launched a new facility that has been specially-designed with a variety of solid fuel training rigs, classroom, meeting room and offices over two floors.
As a HETAS approved centre, it is able to offer a selection of HETAS courses. In addition, business workshops and seminars for sole traders, micro businesses and SMEs will be held at the venue.
And it will be home to Mr Soot Chimney Sweep’s very own in-house Training Academy Programme - an intensive pathway to a career in the industry for the company’s new sweep technicians.
Sam Garrahan, CoOwner, Director and Centre Manager, said: “We are delighted to be launching a modern, professional
training centre in the heart of Wigan.
“The location was specifically chosen due to its brilliant transport links. Not only is it just minutes from the M6 motorway, but it has fantastic railway connections.
“Set over two floors, we’ve sought to make it a pleasant and vibrant environment in which to learn. Our emphasis will be on making it a real national centre of excellence, and we can’t wait to get started.”
David Sudworth, CoOwner and Managing Director, said: “This is a massive step forward for the Mr Soot brand.
“From just myself and a van, we have grown the company into a multivehicle operation, with offices and trained sweep technicians serving the whole of Wigan and large parts of the region, including Manchester, Liverpool, Preston,
Stockport and Warrington.
“As the company has grown, so has the need for a dedicated training centre for our technicians. And thanks to our partnership with HETAS, we are able to offer a range of accredited courses to solid fuel professionals of both today and the future.
“Mr Soot has always stood for professionalism and innovation; delivering what customers want and continually striving to raise standards.
“By unveiling of a modern, bespoke training centre, we have demonstrated our commitment to investing in both the local economy and future of our industry.”
HETAS Head of Training, Carrie Artus, said: “As the industry leading training provider, we want to ensure that only the best training centres offer our range of courses.
“We can see the passion and enthusiasm of the Mr Soot team to provide quality training to industry stakeholders and this centre complements our existing network across the UK.”

Pevex Stoves boss sells his company to staff
Adrian Hockley delighted to transfer business after 30 years at the helm
Suffolk based stove distributor and manufacturer Pevex has announced a staff buyout of the company.
But the employee takeover has not required workers to spend all of their savings or remortgage their homes to take up the deal.
Staff at the Ipswich based firm are benefitting from a so-called Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) transfer - with company owner and managing director, Adrian Hockley, effectively gifting the company to his existing employees in return for future profits.
Adrian, who founded the company as a one man in a van back in the early 1990s, has made the move to an EOT in a bid to retain stability for his now 14 strong team.
He told Fireplace Specialist
Magazine that he had no obvious person to pass the business on to, while selling it privately risked huge disruption and potential changes to the workforce.
The EOT means that the shares of the Company are transferred to a Trust on behalf of the employees and they are given a number of years to provide the funds out of the corporate profits before the buyout is completed.
In future years it will also allow them to take a share of the profits, in the same mould as famous retailer John Lewis.
Adrian said he had taken this path to reward his long-standing employees, some of whom had been with him for over 20 years.
He commented: “I wanted to preserve everything for the benefit of those people who’ve worked for me for quite a number of years.
“In essence this means that the staff will now become the beneficial owners of the business, which maintains both succession, heritage and legacy of the business, giving them stability in their jobs as well as a stake holding and in the longer term, hopefully sharing any rewards from their efforts.
“We are well known in the industry and we’ve got a good reputation and are the preferred supplier for many retailers, so rather than making a decision that could jeopardise that I want to try and safeguard the business for after I’m gone.
“This way makes for the easiest
Page 30 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine
possible transfer - we carry on in the same way, nothing changes - our supply chains remain in place and our customer base is intact as there’s a straightforward continuation of operations. There will be no alteration of what we do day-to-day.
“Nobody outside the company will see any difference, but it gives the staff a stake in the business, it helps drive efficiencies and it gives them something to look forward to.
“The future success of the business is really down to them.
“The stronger they can make the business, and that includes everyone from the sales guys on the road to the office staff, warehouse operatives and delivery drivers, the sooner they can complete the transfer.
“Once I’m bought out, all future profits become theirs!”
He added: “I’ve got several long standing staff members, many of which have been with me for more than a dozen years.
“For their families and livelihoods, why not give back what they helped to create over those years?”
Adrian will still be at the helm until he is fully bought out and he hopes to retain a consultancy role with the company once he moves on.
Adrian, who has expanded the firm from being a sole trader in 1993 to taking on 20,000sq ft of warehouse and office space in recent years, said he had enjoyed a challenging career growing the business.
He added: “In the beginning I wanted to work for myself, be my own boss; determine my own future.
“I had a willingness to get out there and work hard to try and explore what opportunities there were.
“In many respects it was more by luck than judgement that I fell into the fireplaces industry but it’s now turned into more than 25 years of being involved with woodburning stoves.
“It’s been a challenging career, we’ve had a lot of different things to navigate but I’ve had some fantastic partners to help me along the way, including Heta from Denmark, who we’ve been working with for over 20 years.
“Every year has been a challenge, whether it’s been trying to introduce new products or doing trade shows, through to the last few years where the market has gone completely haywire and we’ve been pushed to our absolute limits to meet demand.”
Pevex supplies a range of wood and multi-fuel stoves to a network of authorised retail stockists throughout the UK, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
It produces a range of stoves that are made in Europe and the UK and distributes the highly regarded Heta range having built up a loyal customer base over the years.
Each year new products are introduced and are designed to be aesthetically graceful and efficient heating appliances for both traditional and contemporary homes, able to meet the environmental requirements of today and tomorrow with many approved for use in smoke control areas throughout the UK and meeting the latest Ecodesign requirements.

EV adoption: ensure your business doesn’t get left behind –why now is the time to transition
By Nicola Mahmood, Business Development Director, Equans EV Solutions
As businesses across the UK look to play their part to support the government’s net zero target, EV adoption naturally becomes part of the conversation.
That said, the first question often asked by businesses isn’t ‘should we invest in EV’, ‘but rather ‘when should we start investing in EV?’ – the answer to that question, in the simplest form, is now.
The government’s ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be enforced from 2030 in the UK.
This may seem far into the futurehowever, the reality is that for many businesses, that’s likely just one, or two fleet replacement cycles. It’s now more important than ever to start the transition to EV, to ensure your business doesn’t get left behind.
Start small, scale up
If you operate a large-scale fleet, it would typically require significant upfront investment to transition your entire fleet to EV, which many businesses are likely not prepared for. However, it’s important to understand that EV infrastructure doesn’t need to be a single, outright investment. Transitioning to EV is completely scalable, and the solution you choose should be modular, meaning it can grow in line with business growth.
By starting small and scaling up, you will learn what works for your business and have the flexibility to change your strategy if needed. What’s more, as the industry continues to grow, you will also benefit from developments in technology as you expand your
infrastructure.
Invest now to reduce costs
The combination of an everincreasing need for EVs and continued regulatory pressure, has in turn created a surge in demand for EV infrastructure. In fact, statistics have shown that almost two-thirds of businesses expect to operate a 100% electric fleet in the next four years. With that in mind, as we approach 2030, it’s highly likely that demand will significantly increase as businesses rush to get prepared.
Delaying your transition, or waiting until you are forced to switch could result in higher costs and longer lead times. When infrastructure demand increases, wait times for new grid connections will rise, infrastructure providers will have less capacity and charger demand will increase. By investing now, your business can get ahead and in turn, save valuable time and money in the future.
How to get it right the first time
In an attempt to start the process quickly, many businesses make the mistake of investing in electric vehicles before considering their overarching roadmap to EV. For the transition to EV to be seamless, businesses should look to start the EV infrastructure conversation first. This ensures your entire EV programme is built around your business operation, rather than as a reactive measure.
A good place to start is by mapping out your business and operational needs, in particular where your fleet vehicles are returned to once they’ve
been on the road. For example, if your drivers return vehicles to a depot overnight, installing on-site charging is likely to be most suitable. However, if they return to base throughout the day and require a fast charge before their next route, then rapid charging should be taken into consideration. On the other hand, if your drivers take vehicles home at the end of the day, domestic charging may be considered. Or, you may find that a combination of the three works best to keep your fleet on the move in an optimal way.
Taking all of the operational factors of your business into consideration can be complex and many businesses are unsure where to start, which means they often don’t. This is where involving a charge point delivery partner in the early stages can prove beneficial. Your partner will support you to map out the needs of your fleet and business, including uptime, range, and routes, as well as your power availability and required capacity. Ensuring you get this right at the start will make your transition smoother, and reduce costs in the long run.
Now is the time to transition
It’s clear that the EV revolution is within reach. However, businesses who don’t consider adopting soon will face higher costs and significant delays. Involving a delivery partner in the early stages will help to ensure your solution is fully suitable and scalable, supporting the demands and needs of your business.
The benefits of adopting EV for businesses are endless from a reduced corporate carbon footprint, to cost savings via lower running costs. There are also various government funding initiatives and grants available to support your journey –meaning there’s never been a better time to switch.

Editor’s Blog - Could the looming gas boiler ban plans boost the stove industry?
After the fuel price hike could this be the next boon for the fireplace sector?
Reports that the gas boiler industry has allegedly been lobbying the government and spreading misinformation about heat pumps in a bid to delay the looming ban on their products is probably not surprising.
In recent weeks various stories have surfaced in the national media revealing the pressure some in the gas boiler sector are allegedly applying to try and retain their relevance.
Sadly, from an environmental ‘net zero’ perspective, it might work as we have not got anywhere near the levels of heat pumps that are needed.
Back in 2021 the government said it wanted to see 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028 and suggested it would ban gas boiler installations in new homes by 2025.
In recent months the Scottish government has announced a more ambitious target of stopping new gas boilers being fitted from the spring of next year.
But in July the House of Lords Climate Change Committee said the national target for green heating
was “very unlikely to be met” as only 50,000 are installed annually.
The government responded by saying it would launch a marketing campaign to make people more aware of the grants for installing heat pumps.
But why are we talking about this you may ask? Well, the government policies could be a huge boost to the stove industry amid claims that heat pumps don’t provide the instant blast of heat that many householders prefer.
Many in the industry feel that a mix of multi-fuel stoves and heat pumps will make the ideal low carbon heating system.
The Stove Industry Alliance agrees. Its chairman Andy Hill, commented: “As we work towards net zero, the role of a woodburning stove could play a vital part in providing low carbon heat to our homes.
“A stove complements other heating sources – especially steady state heat emitters such as Air Source Heat Pumps.
“The use of a wood burning stove to provide localised low carbon heat, as well as providing heat in cold periods, could reduce the load on increasingly strained electricity networks and gas pipelines. ”
Geoff Royle, technical director at retailer The Stoveyard, said: “When it comes to what heat pumps are like to live with, it seems that for many people they provide a disappointing type of heat. Unlike gas or oil central heating boilers, heat pumps deliver heat at lower temperatures, but for longer periods, which make them wonderful at raising the ambient temperature of a home, which for some people works fine, but for many others (and I’m one of them) they simply don’t provide the level of comfort I’m used to.
“They don’t cope well either with sudden temperature changes. Basically they’re missing that satisfying blast of heat that warms the bones when you come home on a freezing cold and wet winter’s evening.
“This is where a modern wood burning stove makes the ideal pairing with heat pumps. It cost-effectively gets around this problem and its fuel is virtually carbon neutral. A stove can provide you with a quick top-up of much needed heat on colder days, as well as during milder times when whole-house heating isn’t needed. It will provide your home with an unrivalled warm and welcoming focal point and, let’s face it, who doesn’t love a stove when it’s all fired up?”
So, with the powerful gas lobby on the government’s back, should the stove industry be trying to hit back and support the ban? Let me know your thoughts at nick@euromediaal. com

Your Wood Burning Technical FAQs Answered
With more consumers looking for fuel independence, wood burning allows them the freedom to heat just a small area of their home and potentially reduce higher energy costs associated with other forms of heating.
With installers, chimney sweeps, retailers and manufacturers serving as trusted professionals to consumers, Calvin May, Head of Technical Services at HETAS, talks us through the most frequently asked technical questions to help support consumers through every step of their journey when exploring alternative heating methods.
We have seen a significant increase in alternative ways of heating homes over the last 12 months, with our website seeing an unprecedented number of visits during the winter months. We are witnessing a change in consumer behaviour away from traditional heating to more costsaving or energy efficient methods.
As more and more homeowners look to trained and registered installers for advice, there is a crucial role to be played in understanding the requirements and considerations needed when installing solid fuel appliances. HETAS play a significant role in supporting registered businesses, whether that be through our technical helpline or monthly technical bulletins.
We’ve taken the top five queries
received via our helpline to help you support consumers through every step of their journey…
• Why is the commissioning of a solid fuel appliance so vital?
Commissioning of any solid fuel appliance is an essential part of the installation process. However, on occasions it can be overlooked. To stay compliant, Building Regulations state that steps must be taken to achieve compliance on completion to ensure safe operation. A commissioning report should be completed by the installer demonstrating that materials and components appropriate to the intended application have been used and that flues have passed appropriate tests, which can also help resolve immediate issues experienced by the user in future.
Essentially, installers should be checking that the appliance and flue comply and are set up for smoke testing, spillage testing and flue draught testing which all assist in identifying the safe operation of an appliance and flue.
• What are the considerations for the placement of a CO alarm?
The importance of a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm in the home is paramount and it’s vital that installers are using best practice techniques when identifying its best location.
The UK Building Regulations provide guidance on where alarms should
be placed, which should be in the same room as the installation, ideally between one and three metres from the appliance, and at least 150mm below ceiling level. It should also be affixed to the wall/ceiling in which its situated, to avoid users from moving the alarm from its safe position.
They should also be placed in an area that gives sufficient response time for occupants to vacate the building.
• What are the requirements for the installation of solid fuel appliances in thatch properties?
Firstly, it’s imperative to ensure that any chimney remains in sound condition to reduce the risk of raising thatch materials to an unsafe temperature, but more importantly to make sure that any chimney terminates at a suitable height above the roof surface.
Chimneys in thatch properties shall terminate at a height of at least 1.8m above the roof surface, measured from the top of thatch material on the roof, to the top of the terminal or chimney pot. Alongside these installation practices, chimneys should also remain clear from blockage at all times, particularly from soot and/ or bird nesting materials, so it is important to have a thatch chimney swept and serviced at regular intervals by a HETAS approved chimney sweep.
Secondly, it is not uncommon for some thatch properties to be assigned
Page 42 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine
As more and more homeowners seek out alternative heating methods, the rise in interest in wood-burning stoves has soared.
a Graded Listing status. Therefore, before commencing works, all relevant parties should be contacted including the homeowner’s insurance company and the local conservation office authority. It is recommended that installers develop a portfolio including images, design plans, camera surveys and/or a step-by-step guideline on the practices proposed for reference if requested by the relevant parties. This is to ensure that the construction work does not immediately alter the visual and historic appeal of the building.
• What should be assessed in a pre-installation survey to ensure the installation remains compliant?
Once the appliance has been decided upon, it is important for a preinstallation survey to be carried out to determine whether the proposed appliance will be suitable for the relevant environment, and remain compliant with the relevant regulatory and manufacturers installation requirements.
As a minimum, the following items must be checked:
• Is the appliance location/position suitable for the load, wall structure, requirements and the customer’s or household’s needs?
• Is the fuel storage arrangement appropriate for the customer’s needs?
• Does the hearth provision meet the requirements and is it level?
• Does the chimney/flue system comply and has a smoke test been carried out to determine the integrity of the flue?
• Does the permanent combustion air ventilation meet requirements?
• Has a carbon monoxide alarm been provided and placed correctly?
• What’s the importance behind a notice plate and what does this tell us?
Where a hearth, fireplace, flue or chimney is provided or extended, a durable notice containing information on the performance must be affixed in a suitable place for the purposes
of enabling appliances to remain safely installed. The purpose is to prominently record the type of hearth and flue system should any party require the information of its type, manufacturer, location and route. This, for example, could include the fire service in the event of a chimney fire, or for continued sweeping and servicing.
Information contained on the plate should clearly include:
• The location of the heart or fireplace
• The category of the flue and types of appliances that can be safely accommodated
• The type of size of the flue and manufactures name
• The installation date
• The installer’s details

One ‘Hull’ Of A Story
Hull Fireplaces celebrate thriving business as latest showroom opens.
The founders of Hull Fireplaces, which has been trading for seven years, are taking another step forward.
The successful retail outlet is the brainchild of good friends Jasper Worthington and Arthur Mulroy, who together have vast experience and with more than 20 years in the industry.
Their initial showroom opened on a small industrial estate back in 2017. After a slow first year they made the tough decision to move to a more prominent high street spot and have never looked back!
Starting from humble beginnings in a small lock up unit, the business has now expanded to having two substantial showrooms.
The team dynamic between Arthur and Jasper is key to their success.
Jasper is the installer who has a commitment to leaving every client with perfection while Arthur is the front of house sales and general manager of the company.
Both pride themselves in offering exceptional customer service.
Often viewed as the ‘underdog’ locally, this business is now thriving and hitting new highs that they could only ever dream about.
They have hit the ground running with their newest showroom based in Beverley, East Yorkshire.
The opportunity to expand from the single showroom on Holderness Rd in Hull arose from the close relationship between Jasper and Select Fireplaces of Beverley. Jasper would sub-contract for Select and carry out all of their installations.
Earlier this year Select Fireplaces were looking to retire after a very successful 25 years. Jasper and Hull Fireplaces saw a fantastic opportunity to take over the unit and start implementing the skills and products they offer and bring them to a second showroom in Beverley.
The showrooms are now going from strength to strength and are consistently busy.Even with the
current seasonal lull both showrooms are yet to see a drop in both sales and interest.
Hull Fireplaces has always had an in-house installation team and it now boasts up to six teams carrying out regular installations to the highest standard.
They are eternally grateful for the continued support they have received from their suppliers and the fantastic reviews they acquire daily!
The social media side of the company speaks for itself with five star reviews across their Facebook pages.
Almost every installation they carry out is posted to their page for their followers to see and gather ideas from.
Hull Trade Fireplaces are incredibly proud of all they have achieved and have big plans for the future. Watch this space.

Percy Doughty launches new Firebloom Outdoor Collection
Percy Doughty is excited to announce the launch of their latest brand “Firebloom Outdoor” their first collection of outdoor heating solutions.
Percy Doughty has turned its attention to the great outdoors by introducing Firebloom Outdoor, an inspiring brand designed to elevate any outdoor space and transform it into an environment that can be enjoyed all year round.
Firebloom is built on over 70 years of experience in the fireplace industry creating high quality, stylish and
functional products and will launch initially with the Fresco outdoor heater; a combination of functionality and style, designed to be the focus of your outdoor sanctuary. The Fresco is a true statement piece featuring four glass sides, offering an unrestricted 360° view of the beautiful flames within, bringing an incredible ambience to any outdoor space.
Whilst maintaining the Percy Doughty high standard of product aesthetic, the usual remit of ‘form follows function’ has been strictly observed in the development of the Fresco outdoor heater. Throughout the design process, careful consideration has been given to promote simplicity and ease of use, along with robust build techniques and the use of heavy gauge 4mm still to promote durability and longevity of use.
“We are delighted to introduce the Firebloom outdoor range to our product portfolio” comments Andrew Mulligan Managing Director. “The collection has been in development for several years and in that time, it has seen us appreciate our gardens more than ever before. Firebloom provides the answer to fulfil the needs of consumers seeking the ability to enjoy the outdoors for longer, night or day without having to head indoors to avoid the cold. Our in-house design and development team are working on many new products which will be added to the range over the coming months, these will include further heating models as well as cooking options, exciting times ahead”.
