Wide range of challenging and fun activities with our own Sky tower and on site lake and forest.
School/College residential trips are our speciality and our Activity Director, Gethin has 30 years experience under his belt running residential centres for both private and local council organisations. With various accommodation blocks on offer, many converted from old character farm buildings dating back as far as the 17th Century, we can sleep well over 100 guests. Our groups can be fully catered from our recently upgraded kitchen and dining block and we have recently built an outdoor kitchen in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to cater for groups looking to partly self cater.
We have a whole range of adventure activities available on site where we have a
Llain offers a wide range of activities on and off site. Our most popular packages are the residential trips
climbing wall, high ropes and zip wire, also wet activities on the lake including Kayaking and stand up paddle boarding as well as our always popular mud assault course.
All sessions are led by fully qualified instructors, all of whom are also first aid qualified and have enhanced DBS checks. The activity package can be bespoke to your requirements and can include fieldwork options led by former geography and science teachers on our staff. Unlike many centres we are happy to consider short breaks of 2 or 3 nights as well as the more popular 4 nights. We offer deals for the ‘fringe season’ dates, especially before the national tests and SATS.
where a bespoke programme can be designed to suit your group. We are also finding the day packages becoming increasingly popular where we can offer 2 or 3 ‘taster’ activities. All packages can be bespoke to suit different ages and abilities and can be inclusive for individuals with special requirements.
We can divide our activities into four main categories:
The ‘ropey fun’ activities are based around our sky tower and can include climbing, high ropes course, abseiling and the zip line.
The ‘wet stuff’ mainly happens on the lake and can include Kayaking, Stand up paddle boarding and Raft building. We mainly use ‘sit on top’ kayaks which we find give more confidence to beginners and have a fleet of single and double kayaks as well as new SUPs to add to the fleet.
Our Woodland Ranger activities have become very popular, especially having
developed various areas dedicated to small groups around the site including our Bushcraft area in our 40 acre woodland. These sessions can be fun, ‘birthday party’ style or more educational using the knowledge of our Level 3 Forest school leaders and IOL SiG members (members of the Institute of Outdoor Learning, Bushcraft Special interest group). Most activity packages include an element of Team building where team members are given tasks that encourage cooperation, the Mud assault course is easily the most popular of the team building activities! All activities are run by our highly qualified and experienced instructors who, in addition to gaining national governing body awards, have also been internally assessed by our nominated Technical Advisers who are experts in their specific disciplines.
All activities and equipment have risk assessments and regular health and safety checks.
Coasteering
Coasteering involves swimming, climbing and of course jumping. It is an exhilarating sport led by Activity Pembrokeshire’s highly experienced instructors. Wetsuits, helmets and Buoyancy Aides are all provided. There is a minimum age limit of 8 and participants are expected to be water confident and competent.
Our 300m adventure course includes a series of bridges, tunnels, rope swings, confidence tests, ramps and all manner of other obstacles. It is likely to be the wettest and muddiest experience of your life! It’s regularly voted the most popular activity by visiting groups. The ‘Adventure course’ can be adapted to be a challenge for all ages from cubs and scouts to senior rugby squads, fire service teams and teams of outdoor instructors! .
Archery
Archery is as inherent to Wales as singing and with a range of bows available to suit all strengths and sizes you can take part in an activity that has been taking place for centuries and is really fun and competitive. Close attention is
paid to discipline and safety on our indoor ranges and our sessions are fully inclusive.
Woodland Ranger
Our Woodland Ranger sessions are very popular and can be spread between our on site facilities and the woods just 5 minutes walk away. All Woodland Ranger activities are run by qualified Forest schools and Mountain Leaders who are also former teachers. We believe in holistic and experiential learning and giving children time and space to explore their natural environment while maintaining the highest standards of Health and Safety.
Popular activities include den building, various methods of fire lighting, cooking marshmallows and for the younger ones, the story of Dragons and the little woodland people, making Dragon’s breathe bracelets and campfire stories.
For older groups we have the option of using some tools associated with bush craft including the bow saw and small knives for whittling and creating your very own tent pegs or whatever your creativity allows you to do. We also offer more advanced fire
lighting, gutting and cooking fish and even offer some fried crickets for dinner!
Climbing & Abseiling takes place on two purpose built towers within the centre grounds. Following an introductory session on the basic tower with some confidence building abseiling and basic rope handling and safety techniques we can introduce our climbers to the ‘Sky tower’ with over 400 holds and 20 routes of varying degrees of difficulty. On this activity you will not only climb but get involved in keeping each other safe by working as a team and helping to belay. And NEW for the 2023 season will be the ‘Aqua Wall’ a 6 metre traverse over the swimming pool…if you fall off, you just get wet!
We offer Kayaking on our ‘Sit on tops’ as well as Paddle boarding, a sport quickly growing in popularity globally. In our continued efforts to be as inclusive as possible, we even have a couple of ‘Pedalos’ for those who may not be quite as adventurous!
Tackle the onsite orienteering course and get to grips with following the map to collect the letters and solve the mystery before heading down to the woods and trying one of our larger courses. We have the option to take this further and introduce compass work and set up a different route which would be a good introduction before any of the walks. and links in very nicely with school National Curriculum studies.
Raft Building is a team exercise using barrels and ropes. It must hold together and, of course,
float when put to the test on our lake. An excellent team event with groups racing around the islands on the lake to be the first to finish. All safety equipment is provided and the activity is monitored by our fully qualified staff who will shepherd you through the complicated process of knots and lashings and hitches.
The sky tower hosts our high ropes course that will offer a challenge and will develop team spirit, communication skills and problem solving skills. We will instruct you in the skills of group belaying that develops trust and responsibility and enables everyone to participate. The aim is to climb and clamber up, over, across and down the elements helping each other as you go.
The zip-wire is really fun and offers a chance for clients to test their nerve. Connected to a steel wire suspended from 10 metres above the ground. You’ll get a ‘roller coaster’ rush as you rapidly accelerate along the 70 metre wire. Our Sky Tower is inspected by High Time Technical Consultants Ltd every year.
Walking
Walks for all ages along the beautiful Ceredigion coastal path from the centre, with a chance to see seals, dolphins and a whole range of wildlife.
Llain Activity centre has teamed up with the CBW sailing centre in New Quay. As a recognized RYA training centre you are in the very best hands for this truly incredible opportunity. Clients are taught the basic techniques with a safety boat in attendance at all times for extra support.
