Welcome Dear Members and Friends of Europa Nostra, We welcome you warmly to Athens for the 50th Anniversary Congress of Europa Nostra. This event is jointly organised by Europa Nostra and Europa Nostra’s Country Representation in Greece, Elliniki Etairia (Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage) between 13 and 16 June 2013.
W E L C O M E
The culmination of the celebration will be the 50th Anniversary General Assembly, to be held in the Acropolis Museum at 11.00 on Sunday 16 June and the Award Giving Ceremony which will take place that evening at 21.00 in the Odeion of Herodes Atticus, an imposing structure of the second century AD, just under the Acropolis of Athens. The ceremony will take place in the presence of H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic, Dr. Karolos Papoulias, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, Androulla Vassiliou, Europa Nostra’s President, Plácido Domingo and Europa Nostra’s former President, H.R.H. The Prince Consort of Denmark. Androulla Vassiliou and Plácido Domingo will jointly present the 2013 Awards to the laureates, who will earlier have set out their achievements at the Excellence Fair, to be held in the Benaki Museum in Piraeus Street on the morning of Saturday 15 June.
2 0 1 3
The conclusion of the Award Giving Ceremony will be an hour of music, songs and short readings from Greek literature, illustrating the relationship between the Greeks and the natural world from the time of Homer to that of the two winning laureates of the Nobel Prize in Literature, George Seferis and Odysseas Elytis.

On the evening of Saturday 15 June, Europa Nostra and Elliniki Etairia are organising a “Pilgrimage to Ancient Athenian Democracy”. Those interested may either join the group at the Athenian Agora to visit the Museum in the Stoa of Attalos and listen to relevant readings from ancient authors in English by Ioannis Simonides - who will have done the same for Plato’s “Apology of Socrates” on the evening of Thursday 13 June - or at the Pnyx, the meeting place of Athenian citizens, where we shall hear further such readings, amongst others by Commissioner Vassiliou and our President. The subsequent reception will be hosted by the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences at the neighbouring neoclassical building of the National Observatory of Athens, built in 1843 by the Danish architect Theophilos Hansen, only ten years after the independence of Greece. The Observatory received an EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award in 2010. The programme includes visits to the Acropolis (where the Propylaea Restoration Project is obtaining a Category 1 Award this year), the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum, one of the most outstanding in Europe, the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens and the Industrial Gas Museum. Post-Congress visits are being organised on June 17 and 18 (see pages 19 and 20).
Denis de Kergorlay Executive President of Europa Nostra

One-day Island C ruise to the Islands of Hydra and A egina In Hydra we shall have the opportunity to visit one or two buildings that have received an EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Award for their meticulous restorations. One is the Koundouriotis museum, the other the Bratsera Hotel. Also, we will have the option to visit the Miaoulis Mansion, one of the most historic houses of Greece. Now privately owned, it once belonged to the most important Admiral of the Greek Revolution (1821-1830). Being one of the few completely car-free islands of Greece, Hydra is a beautifully preserved traditional and historic settlement. On the island of Aegina we will visit the temple of Athina Afaia, a stunning, early 5th century BC example of classical Greek architecture. Our visit will continue with a walk in the town of Aegina, the first capital of Greece, and this will be followed by the Closing Reception at the historic house of the Trikoupis family (Charilaos Trikoupis, the son of the family, was Prime Minister of Greece in the late 19th century), kindly hosted by its current owners.
