We wish to extend our particularly warm welcome to the 28 laureates who have come to Lisbon from 15 countries across Europe, representing the “unity in diversity” of our cherished cultural heritage. Tonight, we very much look forward to revealing the six winners of the “Grand Prix”, chosen by the Jury members after thorough study and debate. We will also reveal – for the first time in the history of the prize – the winner of the Public Choice Award.

We are very grateful to all the laureates, and indeed to all those who applied to our awards scheme, for the powerful message they convey: in times of hardship, excellence in cultural heritage is not only possible, but – even more – it is necessary. Ten years on since the prize was launched, this message is more relevant than ever. Tonight, in this magnificent historic setting, a true gem of European and World Heritage, we will also celebrate intangible cultural heritage through the performances of renowned artists that will enchant us with Portuguese music.
H E R I T A G E
Our special thanks go to H.E. Anibal Cavaco Silva, President of the Republic of Portugal who has not only given his patronage to the European Heritage Congress in Lisbon but is also honouring us tonight with his presence. We also acknowledge the patronage of H.E. José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, for the entire congress and ceremony. Finally, we are proud to welcome tonight two distinguished guests of honour: Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias.

Orquestra GERAÇÃO
The Orquestra Geração (Generation Orchestra) is the result of a project focused on the social integration of children with unfavourable conditions, working towards broadening their hopes for the future and promoting social mobility. This ambitious goal is achieved through an extensive and comprehensive educational programme, focusing on musical and orchestral education. Through this programme, the children learn to respect one another and to work together towards a common goal. The programme helps them develop their personalities and strive for the highest human values.

Soloists ANTÓNIO CHAINHO
Born in Santiago do Cacém in 1938, António Chainho is a Portuguese guitarist and composer, recognised internationally and considered a true ambassador of the Portuguese guitar. Currently, Chainho is developing new work which will lead to the seventh album of his career. “For many years, the Portuguese Guitar was subjugated to Fado. It was necessary to release it, and I think I have managed that“. He performs recitals all over the world, solo or sharing the stage with Paco de Lucia or John Williams. Along the way he experimented in combining the Portuguese guitar with the music of other cultures and so performed with Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia, the Spanish Maria Dolores Pradera and Japanese Saky Kubota. He was responsible for the first Portuguese Guitar school, in Lisbon, at Museu do Fado and also in Madeira Island and more recently in Santiago do Cacém, his home town. S O L O I S T S
