he Europa Nostra Heritage Tours Committee is pleased to present for 2011 what we believe will be an inspiring series of exclusive tours. The year’s tours will start in the second half of March with a ten day grand journey through parts of spellbinding Morocco. In this amazing melting pot of many cultures you will be taken to a dazzling variety of urban and scenic treasure spots, both public and private. This comfortable tour will expose a truly alluring country in a fascinating way. A special feature will be that, as far as feasible, explanations will be given both in English and French, making the tour perfectly suitable to all our members. In early May, a thrilling opportunity will be offered to see Spain’s most talked-about city, lively and appealing Valencia, as well as some less common small towns, including Teruel with its World Heritage Múdejar buildings, and spectacularly located Cuenca, also a World Heritage site. The combination of a great and historically important city with more humble Spanish treasure-troves should make for a very special tour. Mid September will bring a unique chance to visit Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a very special part of Germany. This northern state is steeped in history, but, apart from the coast, not as widely known as some other sectors of the country. Our simply beautiful tour of illustrious historic towns, of distinguished private houses, and of a varied and inviting landscape, deserves not to be missed. The tour has been completely created and organised ‘in house’.

The final tour of the year, in early December, will go to one of the most scenic and historical of the smaller cities of Central Europe: Salzburg in Austria. This gem of a tour offers a whirlwind of fine impressions of the enchanting historic town-centre, of superb musical events – a must in such a prominent hub of music – and of resplendent private houses in the beautiful surroundings of the town. Where better to spend a few days in the atmospheric Advent period? Initially we intended to offer you five tours, but due to circumstances beyond our control, the planned tour to Bourgogne had to be deferred to 2012. Still, I am convinced that the selection on offer will be as exciting as ever.

n 2011, le Comité des voyages culturels d’Europa Nostra aura le plaisir de vous proposer à nouveau une série de voyages exclusifs particulièrement inspirants.

Les voyages de cette année commenceront mi-mars par un circuit de dix jours à travers l’envoûtant Maroc. Dans ce surprenant mélange de cultures, vous découvrirez une éblouissante variété de trésors urbains et de paysages, à la fois publics et privés. Cet agréable voyage vous dévoilera un pays extrêmement séduisant de manière fascinante. En outre, les explications vous seront données, autant que possible, en anglais et en français, rendant ce voyage parfaitement accessible à tous nos membres. Début mai vous aurez la chance de voir une des plus intéressantes et des plus admirées villes d’Espagne, la vivante et attachante Valence, ainsi que quelques petites villes moins connues, telles que Teruel et l’architecture mudéjare d’Aragon classée au Patrimoine Mondial, et la ville historique fortifiée de Cuenca spectaculairement située (et également classée au Patrimoine Mondial). La combinaison d’une grande ville historiquement importante et des plus humbles trésors espagnols rendra ce voyage très particulier. Mi-septembre, nous vous offrirons une chance unique de visiter une région très spéciale de l’Allemagne, le Mecklembourg - Poméranie Occidentale. Ce länder du nord est imprégné d’histoire, mais, à l’exception de la côte, pas aussi largement connu que d’autres régions du pays. Notre magnifique circuit à travers de célèbres villes historiques, de remarquables maisons privées, et un paysage varié et accueillant, mérite de ne pas être raté. Ce voyage a été complètement pensé et imaginé en interne.

Le dernier tour de cette année, début décembre, vous emmènera dans l’une des plus pittoresques et historiques petite ville d’Europe centrale, Salzbourg en Autriche. Ce bijou urbain offre une mosaïque de superbes impressions du ravissant centre historique, de merveilleux évène-ments musicaux – un must dans un tel temple de la musique -, et de somptueuses maisons privées dans les magnifiques alentours de la ville. Où mieux passer quelques jours pendant la période enchanteresse de l’Avent ? Cinq voyages étaient originellement prévus mais suite à des circonstances indépendantes de notre volonté, le voyage en Bourgogne a du être postposé à 2012. Je reste néanmoins convaincu que la sélection offerte sera aussi passionnante que possible. Ainsi que vous le savez probablement, nos voyages sont une importante source de revenus pour le Fonds Hans de Koster et les campagnes de Patrimoine en péril d’Europa Nostra. Dès lors, le soutien maximum de nos membres est particulièrement bienvenu. Mes collègues et moi vous sommes très reconnaissants de votre participation aux voyages, et nous réjouissons de vous accueillir ! 19–28 March Morocco: Imperial Cities and Private Homes

his tour to one of the most striking regions of North Africa has been designed to give you a lasting impression of the unique and sophisticated Moorish civilization, as well as of what

remains of the influences Europeans left in that spectacular area. The imperial dynasties of Morocco embellished their capitals at Fes, Marrakech and Rabat with magnificent Islamic architecture and arabesque decoration, much of which survives. Little touched by the influence of European colonists, the medinas and souks are imbued with the atmosphere of the past. The exotic cities, the magnificent landscape and the dry, sunny climate have seduced many visitors from Europe and beyond and we will be welcomed at a number of enchanting private homes. Our tour begins in Marrakech where we stay at the delightful hotel Les Jardins de la Koutoubia in the heart of the medina, with

patio view rooms. An introductory morning will include the great gaunt ruins of the El Badi Place and the ornate 16th-century tombs, which evoke the former imperial glory of the city. We will walk through the spice market and the airy courtyards of the Bahia Palace. After a buffet lunch by the pool at the legendary Hotel Mamounia, with its beautifully-maintained gardens, there will be time to explore the fascinating souks. As dusk falls, the great space of the Djmaa el-Fna becomes a stage for acrobats, musicians, herbalists, scribes and snakecharmers. The next day we will be shown the Majorelle Gardens and the late Yves St Laurent’s collection of Maghrebi art and artefacts. We drive to the Ouirgane Valley to see a typical

Berber market, followed by lunch at a delightful privately-owned country villa, in a spectacular garden setting overlooking the Atlas Mountains. Later we will be received for dinner at Riad Madani by our host, M. Thierry de Beaucé. Contemporary art collections are displayed in this historic house, which once belonged to the Grand Vizier. Two nights will be spent at Hotel La Tour Hassan in the present capital, Rabat, where we will be shown the Almohad walls, the necropolis of Chellah, tranquil sanctuary of the Merinid dynasty, the Roman ruins of Sala Colonia and the atmospheric Kasbah des Oudaias. In addition we will see the modern Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the exterior of the Royal Palace. From Rabat we drive to Meknes, imperial city of Moulay Ismail. We will be shown his venerated mausoleum and the impressive granaries and stables, before continuing to the evocative site of Volubilis, a remote outpost of the Roman Empire. Exploring the site, we will come across remarkable mosaic floors dating from 25 B.C. dusk in the magical city of Fes, the calls of countless muezzins will be echoing across the valley. Founded in the 9th century, Fes is considered the true cradle of Moorish culture and the most complete medieval city in the Arab world. Thanks partly to the creation of a modern Ville Nouvelle, old Fes has remained miraculously unspoilt and daily life there goes on much as it has for centuries. We shall be staying at the luxurious Hotel Palais Jamaï, the converted former residence of the 19th-century Grand Vizier of Jamai, overlooking the spell-binding medina. The next morning we will be led through the labyrinthine Fes-el Bali, including the spice market and the tanners’ quarter, with its vats of vivid dyes. Our route will include the finest of the mederse (Koranic schools) - and a glimpse of El Karouine Mosque, with its lovely pavilions. After lunch at a riad, we will visit the Dar Batha Museum of Moroccan Arts, housed in a former palace in Fes el Jdid, the 13th-century ‘New Town’. Heading north through spectacular mountain scenery, we come to the unspoilt town

of Chechaouen, with its steep lanes of whitewashed houses, continuing after lunch to Tangier, overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar. In the evening, we have been invited to visit the palatial French Consulate General, almost opposite our hotel El Minzah. After a walking tour of the Gran Socco and the kasbah, there will be an exclusive visit to the historic American Legation. Later we will enjoy lunch at a private home in a hidden garden setting, where we will meet invited guests from the vibrant Tangier community. A visit to one of the beautiful private gardens on ‘The Mountain’ is planned, before a farewell dinner at the enchanting kasbah home of British art dealer Gordon Watson. The tour starts on Saturday 19 March with drinks and dinner at our hotel in Marrakech and ends on Monday 28 March after breakfast at Rabat. Le Maroc: Villes impériales et maisons privées

e tour dans l’une des régions les plus saisissantes d’Afrique du Nord a été conçu pour vous donner une impression durable de l’unique et sophistiquée civilisation Maure, mais aussi pour mettre en lumière les restes de l’influence européenne dans cet endroit hors normes. Les dynasties impériales du Maroc ont orné leurs capitales de Fès, Marrakech et Rabat de la magnifique architecture islamique et d’arabesques existant encore aujourd’hui. Peu touchés par l’influence des colons européens, les médinas et les souks restent imprégnés de l’atmosphère du passé. Les villes exotiques, le superbe paysage, ainsi que le climat sec et ensoleillé ont séduit beaucoup de visiteurs de l’Europe et d’au-delà et nous serons accueillis dans un certain

nombre de ravissantes maisons privées. Notre tour commence à Marrakech où nous séjournerons au splendide Hôtel Les Jardins de la Koutoubia, situé au centre de la ville. Le premier matin comprendra la visite des merveilleuses ruines austères de la place El Badi et des tombeaux ornés du 16ème siècle, qui évoquent l’ancienne gloire impériale de la ville. Nous traverserons le marché aux épices et les cours aérées du Palais Bahia. Après un déjeuner-buffet au bord de la piscine du légendaire Hôtel La Mamounia, et ses jardins magnifiquement entretenus, nous aurons le temps pour explorer les souks fascinants des environs. A la tombée de la nuit, l’incroyable place Djmaa el-Fna devient une scène pour acrobates, musiciens, herboristes, scribes et charmeurs de serpent.

Le jour suivant nous découvrirons le Jardin Majorelle et la collection d’art et objets islamiques d’Yves Saint Laurent. Nous nous dirigerons ensuite vers la Vallée d’Ouirgane pour y voir un marché berbère typique, puis nous déjeunerons dans une charmante villa de campagne privée, encadrée de jardins spectaculaires dominant l’Atlas. Plus tard, nous serons reçus pour le dîner à Riad Madani par notre hôte, M. Thierry de Beaucé. Des collections de tableaux contemporains sont exposées dans cette maison historique, qui a un temps appartenu au Grand Vizir. Old and New Heritage in the Regions of Valencia and El Maestrazgo

his tour proposes a revealing approach to this rich and diverse region of Spain, an important sector of the medieval Crown of Aragon. Our visits will show fascinating Roman art, stunning Medieval legacy in its many aspects, and strikingly Modern ‘heritage of the future’, not forgetting beautiful and hidden towns and villages and some unexpected scenery. After your check-in at our centrally located hotel, Ayre Astoria Palace, a coach-tour of Valencia, one of the oldest cities of the Mediterranean, will give an overview of its important old and new architecture. Especially the 21st century has given the city some of the most talked about modern architecture of Europe. In the evening, after visiting a private home with an important

private library and ceramics collection in the historical quarter, we shall have dinner at a restaurant in the Europa Nostra prize winning Mercado de Colón building. The next day a walk through the old centre will take us to the imposing 13th–15th century gothic Cathedral with its unusual octagonal tower ‘El Miguelete’, the Baroque 17th century Basilica of the Lady of the Forsaken, the extraordinary 15th century Silk Exchange (a World Heritage site), and several other major sights of the historic town. Lunch will be taken at the Ateneo Mercantil, a 19th century private club. At the National Museum of Pottery and Sumptuary Arts González Martí, located in the 17th century former palace of the Marquis Dos Aguas, we shall be welcomed by its Director. The final

visit will be paid to La Gallera, a delightful art space located in a 1870 building, that once held cock fights. The remainder of the afternoon and evening will be free for some shopping or to explore this lively city on your own. The next morning will be spent visiting two prominent art collections of Spain. The first, of old masters, will be at the Museum of Fine Arts, housed at the 18th century former Monastery of San Pio V. The second will be at the IVAM, Valencia’s modern art museum, where the Museum’s Director will receive us for a short visit. After a stop at the Fine Arts School, located in the Convent of El Carmen, a paella lunch – a must when in Valencia – will be served at the more than 110 years old La Pepica Restaurant on the seaside.

The subsequent visit of Architect Calatrava’s magnificent Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias, a top achievement in modern architecture, is another must, and it will cover the remainder of the afternoon. In the evening we have been invited for cocktails at a private home, known for its collection of decorative arts and old masters. After checkout of the hotel in Valencia, we travel by coach to the Maestrazgo region, famous for its well preserved villages and Mudejar buildings. First stop will be at Mora de Rubielos – its protected historic centre received a Europa Nostra Award 27 years ago. We shall stroll through the village with stops at the attractive Collegiate Church and the grand Castle with national monument status. After a short drive we shall reach Rubielos de Mora, another gem of a village, where we stop for lunch. Then on to picturesque and intriguing Albarracín, where we shall enjoy a guided visit by our member, heritage architect Pedro Ponce de León, of the Europa Nostra Award winning Torre de Doña Blanca. Dinner will be at our charming Hotel Albarracín.

Next morning we visit inter alia the Cathedral, the exceptional Mudejar towers and the sweeping medieval walls. At the Bishop’s Palace we shall be received by the Director of the Santa Maria de Albarracín Foundation, which supports the maintenance of the important cultural heritage of this amazing town, and have a tapas lunch. Subsequently, we will visit one of the towns in this oftoverlooked region of Spain: likeable and culturally outstanding Teruel, an important Moorish city within the World Heritage ‘Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon’ site. church of San Pedro (burial place of the ‘Teruel Lovers’), and the Bishop’s Palace. We will return to Albarracín for dinner at the attractive Casa Santiago and overnight stay. A scenic drive takes us to Cuenca, where we first check into the Parador, located in a 16th century convent. Subsequently we visit the Episcopal Palace Museum with itsth Greco’s and Byzantine Diptych and the 12 century Cathedral with its wonderful modern stained glass windows. Lunch will be at the renowned Las Casas Colgadas. In the afternoon we pay a private visit to the much lauded Juan March Foundation, located in three ‘hanging houses’ with excellent medieval frescoes, as well as the Gustavo Torner Foundation in the desecrated Church of the San Pablo Monastery. After some free time at Cuenca, the farewell dinner will be at the Parador. Next morning we return to Valencia Airport for arrival at 11.00 hrs. The tour starts on Tuesday 3 May at 16.00 hrs at the hotel in Valencia, and ends on Monday 9 May at 11.00 hrs at Valencia Airport.

e tour propose une approche très révélatrice de la richesse et la diversité de cette région de l’Espagne, secteur important au Moyen-âge, de la Couronne d’Aragon. Nos visites montreront l’art romain, le patrimoine Médiéval dans tous ses aspects et l’incroyablement moderne ‘patrimoine de l’avenir’ en n’oubliant pas de superbes villes et villages cachés et des paysages improbables. Après votre enregistrement à notre hôtel du centre, le Ayre Astoria Palace, nous ferons un tour de Valence, une des villes les plus vieilles de la Méditerranée. Ceci donnera une vue d’ensemble de la vieille et nouvelle architecture de la ville. Le 21e siècle a en particulier donné à la ville une architecture moderne dont on parle beaucoup aujourd’-

hui en Europe. En soirée, après la visite d’une maison privée du quartier historique, avec une importante bibliothèque et une belle collection de céramiques, nous dînerons dans un restaurant du Mercado de Colón, gagnant d’un prix d’Europa Nostra. Le jour suivant une promenade dans le vieux centre nous mènera à l’imposante Cathédrale gothique construite entre le 13ème et le 15ème siècle, avec sa si particulière tour octogonale ‘ El Miguelete ‘, puis à la Basilique de la Vierge des Abandonnés, Basilique baroque du 17ème siècle, nous irons ensuite voir la célèbre Loge de la soie du 15ème siècle (site classé au patrimoine mondial) et plusieurs autres curiosités majeures de la ville historique. Le déjeuner sera pris à l’Ateneo Mercantil, un club privé du 19ème siècle. Nous serons

accueillis par le Directeur, au Musée national de Poteries et des Arts Somptuaires González Martí, situé dans l’ancien palais du 17ème siècle du Marquis Dos Aguas. La visite finale sera La Gallera, un espace d’art situé dans un bâtiment de 1870 où se tenaient des batailles de coq. Le reste de l’après-midi et de la soirée sera libre, vous pourrez faire quelques achats ou explorer la ville par vous-mêmes. Le matin suivant nous irons voir deux collections de tableaux en vue en Espagne. La première, des anciens maîtres, sera au Musée des Beaux-Arts, hébergé dans l’ancien Monastère du 18ème siècle de San Pio V. La deuxième sera à l’IVAM, le musée d’art moderne de Valence, où le Directeur du Musée nous recevra pour une courte visite.

Après un arrêt à l’École de Beaux arts, située dans le Couvent d’El Carmen, une paella au déjeuner – incontournable à Valence - sera servie au Restaurant centenaire, La Pepica, sur le bord de la mer. La visite ultérieure de la magnifique Cité des Arts et des Sciences de l’Architecte Calatrava, un accomplissement dans l’architecture moderne, est un autre incontournable, et elle couvrira le reste de l’après-midi. En soirée nous avons été invités pour un cocktail dans une maison privée, connu pour sa collection d’arts décoratifs et de tableaux de anciens maîtres. Après avoir quitté l’hôtel de Valence, nous voyagerons par car vers la région Maestrazgo, célèbre pour ses villages bien préservés et ses Mudejar. Nous ferons un premier arrêt à Mora de Rubielos - son centre historique protégé a reçu un prix Europa Nostra il y a 27 ans. Nous flânerons à travers le village avec des arrêts à la Collégiale et au grand Château avec son monument national. Après un court trajet nous atteindrons Rubielos de Mora, un autre village étonnant, où nous nous arrêtons pour le déjeuner. notre membre, l’architecte du patrimoine Pedro Ponce de León, de la Torre de Doña Blanca, gagnante d’un prix Europa Nostra. Le dîner se déroulera dans notre Hôtel d’ Albarracín. Le matin suivant nous visiterons entre autres la Cathédrale d’Albarracin, ses tours Mudejar exceptionnelles et ses murs médiévaux. Nous serons reçus au Palais de l’Évêque par le Directeur de la Fondation Santa Maria d’Albarracín qui soutient la conservation du patrimoine culturel de cette étonnante ville, puis nous savourerons un déjeuner de tapas. Ensuite nous visiterons une ville de cette région souvent dominée de l’Espagne : La sympathique et culturellement remarquable Teruel, ville Maure importante du site « architecture Mudéjar en Aragon », classé au patrimoine mondial patrimoine mondial. Un tour nous mènera à pied à la Cathédrale du 12ème siècle, avec ses fabuleux plafonds artesonado de la fin du 13ème siècle, les spectaculaires tours des églises Mudéjar, l’église Mudéjar de San Pedro (lieu de sépulture des « amants de Teruel »), et le palais de l’Evêque. Nous retournerons à Albarracin pour le diner à la Casa Santiago, et la nuit d’hôtel.

Une route pittoresque nous mènera à Cuenca, où nous nous enregistrerons d’abord dans notre Parador, situé dans un couvent du 16ème siècle. Par la suite nous visiterons le musée du Palais Épiscopal avec ses diptyques byzantins, et du Greco, puis la Cathédrale ème du 12 siècle et ses merveilleuses verrières modernes. Le déjeuner sera servi au renommé Las Casas Colgadas. L’après-midi nous aurons droit à une visite privée de la tant glorifiée fondation Juan March, située dans trois « maisons suspendues » où l’on peut admirer de superbes fresques médiévales, puis nous visiterons aussi la Fondation Gustavo Torner, dans l’église profanée du monastère San Pablo. Après quelque temps libre à Cuenca, le dîner d’adieu se fera au Parador. Le matin suivant nous retournerons à l’Aéroport de Valence pour une arrivée à 11 heures. 13-18 September Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – A Fascinating ‘World Apart’

ecklenburg-Vorpommern (Western Pomerania), a quite sparsely populated and rural state in north-east Germany, is known for its elegant seaside resorts, winsome rolling landscapes, striking Hanseatic cities and impressive brick churches and castles. Surprisingly to some people, this region with more than 2000 monuments is one of Germany’s richest in cultural heritage. After World War II, many families lost their properties and fled, to set up a new life beyond the iron curtain. This tour will tell some of the personal stories and show the results of determined people and heritage organisations, who, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, took up the challenge of restoring ancestral properties and monuments, rundown or near-destroyed during the years of the East German Republic.

In the afternoon Count and Countess von Bassewitz will receive us at their estate in Dalwitz. In 1945 the family von Bassewitz was dispossessed of their property and sought refuge in Western Germany. In 1992 the Counts von Bassewitz returned to Dalwitz and decided to buy the estate, despite its poor condition. A visit of this important estate, showing you the results of an exemplary restoration, will be followed by dinner at the historic house.

A drive through the beautiful landscape will lead us to the spa town of Bad Doberan, where we shall see the famous Cathedral and Doberan Abbey, two prominent examples of Brick Gothic of the 14th century. Lunch will be served at the splendid Grand Hotel located in the elegant seaside resort of Heiligendamm. On the way to our next destination, Schwerin, we will stop for a brief visit of the medieval town of Wismar, a major trading centre of the Hanseatic League in the 14th and 15th centuries. Wismar has received UNESCO World Heritage status for its restoration and development of the characteristic building types and techniques of the typical Brick Gothic style in the Baltic

region, exemplified by numerous important churches, castles and other buildings. The day will end at the elegant, lake-sided Hotel Niederländischer Hof in Schwerin. The following day will be dedicated to see Schwerin, the capital of MecklenburgVorpommern, well known for its twelve scenic lakes within the city boundaries. Here we shall visit the celebrated Castle and its beautiful garden, the 13th century Cathedral and the important Theatre. The visit of Schwerin’s vital State Museum with its unparalleled collections of 16th-18th century paintings and Fürstenberg porcelain will be another highlight of the day. On our way back to Berlin, we shall stop at Ludwigslust to see the 18th century Baroque Palace, also known as the ‘Little Versailles in Mecklenburg’. The Palace is located in a vast park, laid out in English style with canals, fountains and artificial cascades. u Mecklembourg-Poméranie antérieure (en Poméranie occidentale), une province rurale relativement peu peuplée du nord-est de l’Allemagne, on connaît surtout les élégantes stations balnéaires, les paysages enchanteurs, les belles villes hanséatiques, et les imposants châteaux et églises de brique. Ce que l’on sait moins, par contre, c’est que cette région, avec plus de deux mille monuments, recèle l’un des patrimoines culturels les plus riches d’Allemagne. À la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, de nombreuses familles ont perdu leurs propriétés, et fui, dans l’espoir de se fonder une nouvelle vie de l’autre côté du rideau de fer. 8–12 December Advent in Salzburg

stately city on a small scale, Salzburg has a lovely skyline of domes and spires, dominated by the mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress. The artistic patronage of the Prince-Archbishops and the musical tradition of a city forever associated with Mozart, have become defining features for any visitor. Salzburg is at its most atmospheric during Advent and the scenic surroundings and special private visits enhance the enjoyment of this short winter stay. Our chosen hotel, the elegant Alstadt Radisson Blu, is in the heart of the delightful Old Town, a short walk from the main street, Getreidegasse, with its medieval mansions and picturesque wrought-iron signs. One of these houses is Mozart’s birthplace, which we will be the first stop on our introductory

walk. The spacious square in front of the Italianate Cathedral is the focus for Salzburg’s Christmas Market, a traditional scene with festive stalls selling seasonal crafts – and the alluring scent of mulled wine and gingerbread. By way of contrast, we will also be shown the austere Romanesque Franciskanerkirche. A pedestrian bridge takes us across the Salzach river for a stroll in the formal gardens of the Mirabell Palace, which were designed by Fischer von Erlach. Later, welcome drinks and dinner will be served at the hotel. The following morning, we will be shown the art collections of the Residenz, historic home of the Prince-Archbishops. Nearby is the ancient abbey of St Peter, with its venerable churchyard alongside the rock wall of

the Mönchsberg. We will be shown the rococo interior of the 12th-century Benedictine church. Next we visit a private home on the Kapuzinerberg, with magnificent views over the city. After lunch, we have special permission to visit the elegant apartments of lakeside Schloss Leopoldskron. This was the former home of the impresario Max Reinhardt, one of the founders of the Salzburg Festival. We continue to Schloss Hellbrunn, a delightful summer residence inspired by the villas of the Veneto, with 18th-century decoration, set in baroque gardens. A gigantic Advent Calendar is displayed on the castle façade and there will be time to browse the Advent Market in the courtyard. In the evening we attend a concert at the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg. The Festival Hall was designed by Clemens Holzmeister, incorpo-

rating the Winter Riding School and features interiors by artists including Oskar Kokoschka. On the Saturday, we will drive south to Anif to visit the home of Archduke Karl von Habsburg, followed by lunch at a private country house. We return to Salzburg for a visit and private drinks reception hosted by Count Christopher Küenberg at the Langenhof Palace in the Old Town. This will be followed by a Mozart concert, with dinner, at the Stiftskeller St Peter, Austria’s oldest inn. Exploring the scenic Salzkammergut on Sunday, we drive to Bad Ischl, favourite spa of the Emperor Franz-Josef, where we will be received at the Kaiservilla. We continue along the Wolfgangsee to the charming town of St Wolfgang, famous for the Gothic altarpiece by Michael Pacher in the church. Our final dinner will be at the famous restaurant of Salzburg’s traditional Hotel Goldener Hirsch. ne ville majestueuse à petite échelle, Salzbourg a une charmante ligne d’horizon faite de dômes et de flèches, dominée par la puissante Forteresse Hohensalzburg. Le parrainage artistique des Princes Archevêques et la tradition musicale d’une ville pour toujours associée à Mozart, sont devenus les caractéristiques définissant la ville pour tous les visiteurs. Tout près de là se trouve l’ancienne abbaye de Saint Pierre, avec son vénérable cimetière le long du mur de roche du Mönchsberg. CHANGES BY EUROPA NOSTRA Occasionally we may be obliged to make alterations to tour programmes, and reserve the right to do so. If any significant variation is made to the advertised arrangements after your place has been confirmed, you will be informed and you will be entitled to cancel and receive a full and prompt refund of all monies paid.

TOUR CANCELLATION EUROPA NOSTRA will endeavour to operate the tour as advertised. As a rule the minimum number of participants must be 20 (maximum 25): should the required minimum number not be reached, the tour may be cancelled, in which case everyone booked will be advised not later than eight weeks before the departure date. In the event of circumstances beyond EUROPA NOSTRA’s control resulting in the tour being cancelled, the maximum possible notice will be given. If the tour has to be cancelled by EUROPA NOSTRA, for any reason, all amounts paid will be refunded. As soon as the minimum number of participants has been reached, a confirmation that the tour is definite, will be mailed to you. We recommend not to book flights or make other, cost involving, travel arrangements before receipt of the final confirmation of the tour. TOUR INSURANCE Participants must hold a travel and health insurance that also includes proper cover for cancellation.

TRANSPORTATION on coaches and/or other means of transports is subject to the conditions of carriage of the carrier, some of which may limit or exclude liability. ACCURACY OF BROCHURE Great care has been taken to ensure that descriptions, information and prices are accurate at the time of publication. Nevertheless, there may be times when a publicised facility or visit is withdrawn as a result of factors beyond our control. We will always endeavour to find a satisfactory replacement. The tour description is based on the planned day-to-day programme. However, it will be appreciated that arrangements for private visits cannot always be confirmed until a few months before the tour, and consequently the planned programme may be altered.

ACCOMMODATION We reserve bedrooms with private facilities (bath and/or shower and wc) at first-class hotels or higher. FITNESS Please note that the very nature of the sightseeing programmes, and the inaccessibility of certain town centres to coaches, means that a fair amount of walking may be unavoidable on all tours. We therefore must stress that the tours are not suitable for people who have difficulty in walking or keeping pace with a group. FINAL NOTE The day-to-day organisation of the tour is undertaken by our tour organisers and/or leaders, who endeavour to ensure the smooth running of all arrangements. EUROPA NOSTRA does everything reasonably possible to ensure the well-being of those who entrust themselves to its care. Should any aspect be regarded as less than satisfactory, participants are asked to bring this promptly, and certainly within 28 days, to the attention of the office at The Hague, or of the tour staff.

PRICES Although it is unlikely, we reserve the right to revise our prices due to seriously increased costs from our suppliers, at any time before you book. If this happens, you will be advised before you commit yourself. As soon as you have paid your deposit, and your place on the tour has been confirmed by us, we guarantee that the price of the tour will not be subject to any surcharges, except those resulting from substantial increases in fuel prices, Dutch or foreign government action, such as increases in taxes, and/or adverse exchange rate variations. You will be entitled to cancel your place on the tour with a full refund of all monies paid in the event of a price surcharge of 22

Making Your Booking Please complete the booking form and forward it to The Ultimate Travel Company Ltd, together with your non-refundable deposit of Euros 300 per person made payable to The Ultimate Travel Company Limited. If you are booking less than 8 weeks prior to departure, the full cost of the tour is payable. On receipt of your booking form and deposit we will confirm your booking in writing, then approximately 8 weeks before departure we shall send you further information relevant to the tour that you have booked, together with a final invoice, which will also show any surcharges due (if applicable). You must pay the invoice within 10 days of the invoice date otherwise we reserve the right to treat the booking as cancelled and apply the cancellation conditions as set out below. Your travel documents are dispatched about 7/10 days before the tour departs. Suppliers The Ultimate Travel Company Limited. acts only as agents for the owners of accommodation and services provided, and for road transport proprietors, and all bookings must be accepted subject to the ticket or transport conditions and regulations of the transport proprietors, and also subject to the laws of the country in which such carriage or other facility is required. Passport, Visas & Health All clients are personally responsible for ensuring that they have a valid passport, relevant visa/s and conform to the health regulations required by the country/s that will be visited during the tour. Cancellation You or any member of your party may cancel your tour at any time providing that the cancellation is made by the person who signed the booking form and is communicated in writing. As this incurs administration costs we will retain the deposit and in addition will apply cancellation charges as shown below: Period before departure within which Sum of cancellation charge shown as a written cancellation is received: percentage of the holiday price: More than 60 days Deposit More than 22 days 50% More than 15 days 75% 14 days or less 100% If you are obliged to cancel, you may, with reasonable notice, transfer your booking to a third party who satisfies the conditions required taking that tour, but we will retain your deposit to cover the administration cost for the transfer.

Alterations by The Ultimate Travel Company Limited We will do our utmost to provide the tour arrangements that have been confirmed, but we must retain the right to modify or cancel any tour, accommodation or arrangement, if unforeseen circumstances amounting to ‘force majeure’ arise. In such circumstance, we will inform you as soon as possible, and, should the change be such that it alters the nature of the tour, we shall give you a full refund of all money paid. In recognition we will absorb all financial loss consequent upon cancellation due to ‘force majeure’. We shall not cancel any tour for reason of political tension or natural disaster unless specifically recommended to do so by the British Foreign Office. Tour Cancellation The prices of tours are based on a varying minimum number of passengers travelling (normally 14 passengers). If this minimum number is not reached, at least 8 weeks prior to the scheduled departure date we will cancel the tour and offer a refund in full. Our Liabilities We do not exclude or limit any liability to our clients which may arise from proven negligence by any person employed directly by us or by our suppliers and subcontractors, servants or agents of the same whilst acting in the course or their employment in respect of death, bodily injury or illness. Such liabilities shall be subject to English law and all proceedings shall be within the exclusive domain of the English courts. We shall endeavour to afford general assistance to our clients in the event of illness, injury or death during the period of the tour. We accept responsibility for ensuring that all parts of the tour are supplied as described and that all services shall reach a reasonable standard. Naturally we cannot assume responsibility for loss or expense due to war, riots, strikes, terrorist activities or natural disaster. Travel Insurance It is imperative that you take out travel insurance. Particular care should be taken to ensure that you have adequate cover, in particular for cancellation and emergency repatriation in the event of medical problems. Complaints & Arbitration We will always endeavour to resolve any complaints on the spot, however if the matter cannot be resolved you must write to Martin Thompson, Executive Director, within 14 days of the end of the tour. We will endeavour to resolve the problem as promptly as possible. In the unlikely event that the problem is not amicably resolved the case may be referred to arbitration, if the customer so wishes, under a special Scheme arranged by the Association of British Travel Agents, and administered independently by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. The scheme provides for a simple and inexpensive method of arbitration on documents alone with restricted liability on the customer in respect of costs. The Scheme does not apply to claims for an amount greater than £5,000 per

person. There is also a limit of £25,000 per booking form. Neither does it apply to claims which are solely in respect of physical injury or illness or their consequences. The Scheme can however deal with compensation claims which include an element of minor injury or illness subject to a limit of £1,000 on the amount the arbitrator can award per person in respect of this element. The application for arbitration and Statement of Claim must be received by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators within nine months of the date of return from the holiday. Outside this time limit arbitration under the Scheme may still be available if the company agrees, but the ABTA Code does not require such agreement. Full details will be provided on request or can be obtained from the ABTA website (www.abta.com). Credit Card Payments We do have the facility to accept payment by most credit card companies, deposit payments can be made by credit or debit card free of charge. Balance payments can also be made by debit card free of charge, but will attract a 5% levy if made by credit card. Baggage & Personal Effects These remain your responsibility and risk at all times. Tour Leaders The tour leader, in conjunction with the appropriate medical advice if applicable, has the right to disqualify any client at any time during the course of the tour, if considered necessary for the medical well being or safety of the individual or in the tour leader’s opinion, the client’s actions materially are affecting the enjoyment of the tour for the remainder of the group. Any decision with regard to any reimbursement for any part of the tour not completed will be decided between the Managing Director of The Ultimate Travel Company Ltd and the tour leader. Data Protection Statement Please be assured that we have measures in place to protect the personal booking information held by us. This information will be passed on to the principal and to the relevant suppliers of your travel arrangements. The information may also be provided to public authorities such as customs or immigration if required by them, or as required by law. Certain information may also be passed on to security or credit checking companies. If you travel outside the European Economic Area, controls on data protection may not be as strong as the legal requirements in this country. We will only pass your information on to persons responsible for your travel arrangements. This applies to any sensitive information that you give to us such as details of any disabilities, or dietary/religious requirements. (If we cannot pass this information to the relevant suppliers, whether in the EEA or not, we will be unable to provide your booking.
