letter from the editor In an age said to be characterized by ‘political disenchantment’, we have lately seen people taking to the streets again, standing up for their beliefs across gender, culture and social strata. Our photographers have impressively mastered capturing this global trend. What strikes me most is the courage, the talent and the passion with which our daily coverage is being produced. Under often difficult and sometimes dangerous and even atrocious circumstances, epa’s photo journalists have proven to be trustworthy witnesses of historic moments in order to keep the world public abreast of current developments. At the same time photographers working in a seemingly less spectacular environment manage to go beyond the ordinary over and over again to capture the uniqueness of the moment, no matter what the topic. This year is a special one for epa as it marks the 10th anniversary of epa’s global coverage. Our success is based on three strong pillars: first of all, the continous commitment and professionalism by our ‘old’ epa. Secondly, the fantastic daily contribution by our member and partner agencies, and last but not least, for the past 10 years now the pioneer spirit and talent of the ‘new’ epa colleagues around the globe. United by a unique team spirit we all aspire to an unbiased, out-of-thebox news photo coverage. Enjoy a glimpse at epa’s colorful and multifaceted coverage!

about epa epa european pressphoto agency is one of the world’s leading international news photo agencies providing clients with timely, reliable and high-quality news photography from around the globe. Conceived in 1985, epa’s founding idea was to create an exchange platform for seven European news agencies to share and benefit from their respective domestic photo coverage. Guided by the principles of integrity, independence and responsibility, the idea soon widened when epa employed its own staff in Eastern Europe. Most of these photographers are still loyally aboard the epa ship and form the backbone of epa’s photographic presence. epa has come a long way since these early days. Most notably so in 2003 when epa’s shareholding news agencies – all market leaders in their domestic spheres – decided to venture onto entirely new ground by setting up its own international and comprehensive news photo service. Hence, this year epa celebrates its 10th anniversary of going global! In a nutshell, epa is one of these rare instances where the packaging suggests less than the content: i.e. while the name implies European only coverage, in fact epa is global, with sharp-eyed photographers everywhere in the world, waiting patiently, passionately and professionally to capture the right moment. With a global network of dedicated editors and photographers covering breaking news, sport, entertainment, economics and finance as well as the daily production from the member news agencies, epa’s news photo service delivers a comprehensive feed of pictures that have the power to inform, educate and entertain. At present the epa news photo service offers approximately 1,200 new images on an average day whereas the epa archive contains over three million images dating back to 1997. Proud to have added to the diversity of global news imagery, epa european pressphoto agency is conscious of its daily responsibility towards reliability, continuity, and creativity.

Empty billboards can be easily found across Greece’s capital Athens and, in a way, represent Greece’s current situation. They are ragged, or carrying posters so old that the sun has bleached them illegible. At the moment it is not known if there are plans for them to be removed. They remain monuments of the past and the message conveyed is the absence of a message. As turnover in retail trade has dropped by 54.6 per cent since 2009 the advertising companies owning the billboards have suffered greatly from the economic crisis.
