It is said that the inspira on for the Pantheon of Rome is to be found here. The inside of these mounds was structured very much like the ancient homes of the Etruscan people with stairs, rooms, chairs and even utensils being carved out of the volcanic rock. Day Trip to Tarquinia Busy, present-day Tarquinia did not spring from Etruscan Tarchna it rose on to nearby hill, away from the town of the Lucumons, in the early middle ages, perhaps during the age of Charlemagne. It has preserved its mediaeval appearance, perched as it is on top to hill in stony defence and enclosed within an intact circle of walls from which towers, palaces and churches look out towards the sea.
