ETC Season 2017/2018 — Foreword
Foreword —
In the words of one of the most significant theatre historians, Silvio d’Amico: “People who walked those squares and stood on those porches formulated in their discussions fundamental solutions to crucial problems of human spirit. Through rhythmically articulated words, or through observing youthful bodies displayed in sports arenas, poets and artists discovered the secrets of everlasting harmony. Haphazard local needs urged the discovery of laws of architecture, and certain religious rituals spawned drama theatre in its two typical forms: tragedy and comedy”. It was precisely from the ancient rituals, cults and miracle plays that first performances sprang. And tragedy originated from dithyrambs that were sung at the festivals in honor of the god Dionysus. The first proper tragedy performance is attributed to the legendary poet Thespis, who allegedly composed the first dialogue between the chorus and the actor representing several characters, at Great Dionysia, a dramatic festival organized in Athens in 534 BC. From these ancient times to this day tragedy, and comedy have been written and translated into all of our languages and performed in various theatres at various spaces, testifying to the need to make theatre an indispensable part of our lives. Although over theatre’s centuries-old history modes of performance have changed, and various movements and styles have been formed, theatre has always expressed the freedom of human creativity and has been the center of every culture, as difficult as it may have been for it to survive under various pressures.
p. 4
Theatre has always remained a safe space – from the times of sacrifices to gods at the altar, where tragedy was being created; to the most advanced technological means accompanying contemporary theatre and drawing us in it. It has remained safe even in these turbulent times when fear of the future weakens us and yet again we seek comfort in the artistic harbour of theatre.

5 pillars of ENGAGE
ENGAGE —
Critical thinking through theatre
Empowering today’s audiences through challenging theatre.
— Participatory theatre — Theatre in the digital age
The world around us is undergoing a sea change: Cultural diversity and digitization challenge and shape the way we live as a society in Europe, in urban and rural areas alike. At the same time, questions of belonging and identity are now more crucial and fundamental than ever before: at stake are core democratic values for the continent, as they are under threat from international terrorism as well as bourgeoning nationalist, isolationist, and rightwing movements, while unprecedented numbers of people are seeking refuge from war, risking their lives for a new life in Europe.
In light of these charged circumstances, as representatives of European culture we must ask ourselves: What do today’s challenges mean for European theatrical traditions? How can we assert our voice in society as defenders of European cultural heritage, dedicated to preserving and transforming this heritage for today’s and tomorrow’s audiences?
The role of theatre: The stories of our people are as diverse as we are. Theatre is not only a place where those stories are told, but also a place where society can congregate to explore questions of belonging and identity in a meaningful, sometimes even difficult, way. It is these stories that form the essential backbone of the intangible cultural heritage that nourishes intercultural dialogue between communities, with the goal of passing on traditions and live forms of artistic expression that we inherited from our ancestors and will pass down to our descendants. P. p. 8/32 6
— ETC’s professional development programme for theatre makers — In order to renew, strengthen, diversify and ensure the bright future of this tradition, we have developed “ENGAGE”, a comprehensive, ground-breaking four-year project intended to champion, foster and develop theatre suitable for our fast-changing world and shifting audience needs. This includes both how we create stories in the digital age for live performing arts in Europe and beyond, how we can empower artists and creative professionals, audiences and communities and, finally, empower theatres and the wider creative sector. ENGAGE sets out to create theatre for European audiences to enlighten and entertain, enrich our lives and inspire us, and help us break down stereotypes and barriers – whether linguistic, cultural or economic. This way, we can find common ground through, in and because of theatre, and create a stronger European theatre suitable for today’s exciting, tumultuous and globalised world. Our program was especially created to allow the theatrical profession to thrive at the very highest level, creating art that is diverse and reflects society, and that springs from and can speak to a fast-changing society, so that we can bring the gift of theatre to the largest possible audience.
Empowering ETC’s Network for growth and sustainability
Five project pillars were chosen to produce a power cumulative effect. The effects will be amplified at a cross-sectoral level via two strong strategic partnerships formed to strengthen cooperation between Europe’s theatre sector and the leading performing art organisations Opera Europa and PEARLE*- Live Performance Europe. To kick off the cooperation, we will initiate a joint campaign to launch in 2018 as part of the EU Year of Cultural Heritage. The campaign will celebrate the performing arts in Europe and promote access to European cultural heritage through performing arts on the new digital platform onstage2018.eu As a result of our artistic collaborations and professional international activities, we will in partnership with the European performing arts organisation on-the-move offer policy recommendations to allow maximizing the impact of European theatres in the wider creative sector with a focus in the areas audience development, digital technologies and performing arts to promote access to intangible cultural heritage. We are excited to start ENGAGE, ETC’s new 4 year international programme for theatres. We are delighted to be selected by the Creative Europe Programme, Europe’s unique funding programme for culture, to bring our work and the joy of theatre closer to Europe’s people. We invite you to join in our projects and activities bringing together the theatre community, the creative sector and today’s audiences.

ETC Season 2017/2018 — Artistic Collaborations
Artistic Collaborations —
Young Europe III —
At its heart, ENGAGE focuses on artistic international collaboration & creation with innovative programming and new formats – enabling critical thinking through theatre. The ambitious and energetic European artistic education flagship project, launched in 2008, creates plays with a true European resonance and makes them come alive for young people in schools and theatres showing a genuine cross-border co-operation in action with original, engaging theatre transcending national, cultural and even language barriers. After two highly successful editions of Young Europe, we are preparing the third edition of the project. Young Europe III will take place within the framework of ENGAGE from 2017-2020. Building upon the expertise of the collaboration model, 6 to 8 ETC Member Theatres will work in pairs to co-produce new texts and performances with and for young people (age 14-18). The productions will be made for theatres, classrooms or site-specific locations. They are small-scale, easy to tour and exchange between presenting theatres.
As before, the project has a strong focus on playwrighting and continues the creation of a new European repertoire for young people. This time the resulting artistic form will be documentary-based theatre. Research, using an online education tool, will involve youngsters in the participating theatres. A “Young Europe III Festival” will be hosted by one of the participating theatres, where performances will be combined with public talks and creative sessions for the professional and young audiences. 6-8 ETC Member Theatres are invited to this project as project partners, following a call, in October 2017. Participating theatres will commit to the entire project time and receive from ETC a co-financing grant towards travel costs, artist fees and participation in the festival.

NADIA
Our Stage
—
—
ETC promotes a socially-engaged notion of theatre to break down barriers between theatres and audiences, through participatory theatre. “Our Stage” introduces the idea of the citizen theatre run as a professional in-house production company, as a new form for creative community outreach via artistic collaboration to the wider sector, but also as a new artistic business model. Although there are already several forms of participatory theatre established in many theatre houses around Europe, “Our Stage” aims at bringing everyone to the same table: those with and those without experience in the “Bürgerbühne” concept. We are interested in promoting existing and new concepts of participatory theatre aimed at youngsters and senior citizens, immigrants and refugees, minorities, marginalised groups, people with disabilities, etc.
innovative forms of production that actively engage professionals, audiences and communities in the creative process, leading to relevant, collaborative and artistically excellent performances. 20 Member Theatres are invited to this project as project partners, following a call, in October 2017. Participating theatres will commit to the entire project time and receive from ETC a co-financing grant towards travel costs, artist fee and participation in the festival.
Our ETC Member Theatres are expected to explore this concept of ‘Bürgerbühne’, staging performances with their own audience ensemble as part of the programme. The aim of “Our Stage” is introduce
NADIA is a unique collaboration by 5 ETC Member Theatres exploring the reasons behind the radicalisation of young people in western societies, and the attraction of the Islamic Caliphate. The protagonist is an adolescent schoolgirl. The play reconstructs the days leading up to Nadia’s departure to join the Caliphate. NADIA is writer and director Daniël van Klaveren’s second play about radicalisation.
4 small-scale theatre productions of NADIA have been co-produced in 2017 in Amsterdam, Braunschweig, Liège and Parma for classrooms and theatres. Based on the collaborative approach to the topic of radicalization, Oslo contributed to the project with the production There has possibly been an incident by Chris Thorpe. NADIA connects over 1500 young people across Europe online in a learning course as part of its theatre education programme – encouraging critical thinking about radicalisation through theatre.

Kinetics of Sound
IDIOMATIC / Dub it: One Voice, Many Languages
A coproduction by Det Norske Teatret Oslo (NO) and Croatian NationalTheatre Zagreb (HR) brings together two large scale stage production of modern classics, “Peer Gynt” by Henrik Ibsen and “Kraljevo” (The King’s Fair) by Moroslav Krleza, that will be staged in the partnering theaters exchanging directors and bringing a part of their cultural heritage to the other country.
A collaboration of Théâtre de Liège (BE) and Teatrul National Craiova (RO) is about innovation in captioning for performing arts. This multilingual, transnational project identifies translation via new technology as the key to expanding audiences and increasing intercultural dialogue. A reinvention of surtitling by vocal recognition and “speech to text” technology is applied to IDIOMATIC a non-linear play for 5 actors speaking different languages and a machine giving instructions.
Both productions experiment with new audio technology such as 3D sound, auralisation and psycho-acoustic effects.

It is preserved not only in literature, art, and objects but also expressed in craft skills, stories, food and films – and in live performing arts. In its diversity, cultural heritage brings people together. The digital world gives it an unprecedented access. The aim of the Year is to encourage more people to discover and explore Europe’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, and to reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European space. Our stories are an important part of our heritage – performed on stage across Europe! Participation in On Stage 2018 is open to members of the ETC, Pearle* and Opera Europa.
