FOREWORD In the traumatic times in which we live and in which every morning we face news more tragic than the evening before, we try to find our way. Thousands of refugees cross our borders every day, travel down our roads, through our towns, across our TV screens... It is Europe that these people have chosen as a place of salvation, the promised land, a shelter or a safe haven and with us they share the fate of this continent. And its face has been changing these last few months ago, not only because of the people caught up on our borders, on our trains and buses, nor because of the refugee centres built in the places where they are being transferred from one country to another, but also because of the fate we share, in the doubt of what awaits us in our completely uncertain future. Destination Europe? – more than a mere geographical question, it’s a fateful question for those who come to Europe, for those who live in it and for those who will stay in it. Destination Europe? – it’s a crucial issue in our shared drama that finds its origin in the very beginnings of Greek drama and Greek theatre. Destination Europe? – it’s a challenge for the theatre, which has been heavy-eyed for years now, recycling the same issue of transition, with rather unvaried stage expression. Destination Europe? – it’s an opportunity for theatre to respond to reality and ask some important questions of this reality, entering into a direct dialogue with those who are suffering and with those who share their pain. Destination Europe? – it could be the beginning of a new intercultural dialogue between European theatres which we can start right here in Parma. Dubravka Vrgoč

Destination Europe? It is certainly not possible to direct our gaze on today’s transformations, trying to catch their historical depths without asking complex questions. The latest geopolitical emergencies that hit the European Continent shake us. Thousands of people are on the move, they are walking, escaping, and there have been more than 2500 dead in the Canale di Sicilia; Greece, cradle of our civilization, risked to be expelled from the EU; terrorism gets stronger through the augmentation of its mediatic range, and it strikes us; fear increases and so do the proposals of easy resolutions… After more than seven decades spent trying to build an arduous dream of wealth and peace, it looks like Europe itself managed to demolish it in the last fifteen years. Recognising the multiplicity of identities that compose Europe, without melting them in a mixture that cancels them: that is what theatre does. And it has always started from the need to ask itself questions on how to be a vehicle for the urgencies of contemporary society. The exercise, for us, is to put shared questions tirelessly, in order to give ourselves the chance for a new intercultural dialogue beyond contingency and social emergencies. We have to make the effort not to accept global simplifications. Since its origins, Europe did not focus on the statal, political, philosophical or religious totality (like other great civilizations that were, and are, equally important for the history of humanity), buti t has put its basis on the individual and on the universal value of his/her inalienable rights. The individuali s the leading actor of European civilization, and it is the individual in the changing society – and not the drift of individualism – that the drama should represent in its inexhaustible complexity. ABOUT ETC The European Theatre Convention (ETC) is a network for public theaters. It was founded in 1988 with the aims to promote exchange and discussion between artistic, technical and administrative personnel involved in theaters and theater-making, to provide support to encourage the exchange of performances among different countries and to bridge the language gap that exists in the spoken theatre. Today, the ETC has grown to become Europe’s largest-scale network of its kind, representing some 11,000 employees in over 30 theatres in more than 20 countries around Europe, thousands of artists and 16,000 performances and public events per year. As a European theater collaboration network, the ETC introduces outstanding new ideas and examples of best practices in use at theaters around Europe and supports the development of international collaboration and artistic mobility projects focusing on new theatrical creation and collaboration forms. It also serves as a professional platform for theater makers, organizes meetings, invests in education and training opportunities and initiates theatre research and publications. In addition, ETC is also active as an influential advocacy network representing the European public theatre sector on the political decision-making level, working to build long-term, structured relationships with European political institutions for the important purpose of strengthening the position of the European public theaters as part of the vital culture and creative sector. The ETC network engages in programs that encourage European theater collaboration from a variety of perspectives: Mobility program support exchanges of theatre makers, performances and projects within the network; festivals showcase new European theatre trends and are important platforms for young artists; the ‘Young Europe’ program created new plays for young people in schools and theaters showing a genuine cross-border cooperation; a recently conducted Audience Development Study provides pioneering knowledge about audiences for European theaters. In the recent artistic flagship project ‘The Art of Ageing’, ETC theatres share on Europe’s stages the burning topic of demographic challenges our society is confronted with.

ABOUT FONDAZIONE TEATRO DUE On the Italian theatrical scene, Fondazione Teatro Due in Parma constitutes a unique state of affairs due to a series of factors, from its geographical location, to its individual historical/artistic path, and its links with Europe. This long and winding road has lasted for more than thirty years: the group of artists which formed the basis of the original company (known as the Compagnia del Collettivo and then as Teatro Stabile di Parma) came out of the experience of Sixties University Festivals and Centres, in a period when these were a real creative breeding ground, a place for meetings and the development of well-known personalities of European theatre such as Jerzy Grotowskij, Tadeusz Kantor, Julian Beck, Peter Stein and Patrice Chéreau, to mention a few. Productions, Italian and European co-productions, residencies, instruction for actors and public alike, research and experimentation with new techniques and styles, but also awareness of generational exchange, backing of Italian and European dramaturgy, re-assessment of classical theatre, the creation of interdisciplinary works, musical theatre and dance: these are the core of the intense activities which make Fondazione Teatro Due a point of reference in the national and international panorama. Fondazione Teatro Due is one of the few theatres in Italy with a stable Actors Ensemble; moreover since few years, Fondazione Teatro Due has provided a residency for the Europa Galante Orchestra, directed by Fabio Biondi, one of the most famous Baroque ensembles in the world. Teatro Festival Parma – Meeting Europeo dell’attore – was born in 1983 and is based on the heritage of the historical Festival Universitario di Parma, that since 1975 had already reached 33 editions. After presenting (for the first time in Italy) many artists that are now stable collaborators with Italian theatres, Teatro Festival Parma now represents the first part of the season of Fondazione Teatro Due. The aim of Fondazione Teatro Due is to let the international activities be an important part of the overall artistic project and not just limited to the festival. It would be a great goal for Fondazione Teatro Due if italian theatres would support and stage European productions, coproductions and hosting performances as well as they do with the Italian ones.

Horizon is a new work by one of the most interesting young choreographer of the Italian panorama. His research on the expressivity of the body and on new languages grows together with the exploration through the theme of the crest, intended as a limit but also as a view from the top. Horizon as a skyline, a boundary that makes man face his fears and his indecisions across the line of existence. Body and void are the fields on which Perego dances and reflects. Manfredi Perego practiced several sports and martial arts, which he connects with his contemporary dance creations. From 2004 to 2014 he worked as a dancer in theatre-dance and contemporary dance companies in Switzerland, Germany and Italy. He has been a scholar in Accademia Isola Danza directed by Carolyn Carlson. In the last 4 years he danced for Simona Bertozzi, and he started a collaboration with La Intrusa Danza (Spain). In 2013 he started his first movement research project, from which begins the study of a nature-based poetics as a metaphor of the human condition.

Denied identity, the double, the complex twist between masculine and feminine, the violence of the social conventions: these are the themes of Max Gericke by Manfred Karge, reprise of a memorable production of Fondazione Teatro Due with the same extraordinary protagonist, Elisabetta Pozzi, once again performing the tragic and paradoxical ambiguity of the character. Inspired by a true fact, Max Gericke is the shocking history of Ella, a woman who loses her husband, a crane workman, at the age of 20. Alone in the Weimar Republic during the years of the crisis, in order to survive and to keep the job she decides to take his husband’s identity. In Max’s shoes for forty years, Ella spends her life as a proletarian hermaphrodite, transforming herself in a sexually ambiguous character. In the loneliness of his rathole Max Gericke, seated in his armchair, flows into his memories until he uncovers the great secret of his life. Performance time 1 hour 10 minutes

Line talks about our standing in a line and about our competition for the first place: four men and a woman fight for the first place in a line without any head, tail or goal, and they prefer to die instead of coming second. Israel Horovitz’s famous work is a ferocious, caustic, surreal competition for the primacy in which everything is allowed, everything is licit, but in which none wins or loses because the game is lost from the start, for everyone. Line is the longest off-Brodway production of all time. A cynical and funny comedy in which Horovitz uncovers the inner obsessions of contemporary society, which are condensed in the little space of a line. An amusing and conceptual text, that reflects everyone’s behavior, and a classic of the Theatre of Absurd, in which the action is limited but the rythm is furious. Performance time 55 minutes

THE FROGS written by Aristophanes with and directed by Roberto Abbati, Paolo Bocelli, Cristina Cattellani Laura Cleri, Gigi Dall’Aglio, Luca Nucera, Marcello Vazzoler How can we save a city which is not able to distinguish good from evil? - Aristophanes asks; the answer is not easy, but the humour and the irony of this ancient and present text drive the audience into a wild and surreal trip to the Hades, looking for the truth in which politics does not believe anymore. Le Rane (The Frogs) talks about a deteriorated society, like ours: in 405 b.C. Athens is governed by corruption, and its cultural refinement is crumbling after centuries of prestige. That’s why Aristophanes calls Dionysus and sends him to Hades to look for the ancient poets and playwrights, so that they can re-live and return the lost values to the city. The actors of Teatro Due Ensemble face with humour the question of the political role of culture and theatre in the society, giving the audience the chance to choose the epilogue and re-activating this classic of Greek comedy, not forcing Aristophanes to be modern but letting us look for our Aeschylus and Euripides. Performance time 2 hours

TO SEE IN PARMA Parma is a lively town rich in history, art and culture, and it has been shaped along the centuries by great painters and architects. The city center represents a small treasure made of iconic monuments that narrate the historical development of the city, showing its cultural and artistic traditions. Antelami’s pink marble Baptistery and Correggio’s illusionistic frescoes, decorating the Cathedral, the Chamber of St Paul and the church of St John the Evangelist, are actually the trademarks of the town, together with Parmigianino’s masterpieces in the Church of St Mary of Steccata. Works by Parmigianino and Correggio are also hosted in the National Gallery, located in the Pilotta Palace, that hosts also the Farnese Theatre (a masterpiece of XVII century architecture), the Palatina Library, the Bodoni Museum. The National Gallery displays paintings by Canova, Tiepolo and Leonardo da Vinci. Worth a visit are also the remarkable Stuard Gallery, the Diocesan Museum, the Glauco Lombardi Museum and the Puppets Castle. The Regio Theatre, the House of Sound, the Museum and birthplace of Arturo Toscanini and the Auditorium Paganini, designed by the worldfamous architect Renzo Piano, open to visitors another treasure, Parma’s musical tradition. Parma is also a green city: two main parks, Parco Ducale and Parco della Cittadella, are places in which citizens and tourists can go walking, running or just admire the beauty of nature. The most curious visitors can admire the greenhouses and the garden of the Orto Botanico. The surroundings of Parma are scattered with castles built by noble families between the 14th and the 15th century: Bardi Castle, Castle of Torrechiara, Rocca Sanvitale of Fontanellato and Reggia of Colorno, to name a few.
