ON Wednesday, March 22, 60 women met at La Sala, Puerto Banus for an amazing cause: the Elena Gaite Foundation. Created in memory of Elena, one of the original founders of La Sala before her tragic death from cancer three years ago, the fund distributes money to various charities throughout Costa del Sol.

So far, the Elena Gaite Foundation has given €10,000 to AVOI children’s cancer charity, €10,000 to Cudeca, and €10,820 in school fees for the children of firemen who have lost their lives in the Costa del Sol’s fires.

Coming together for a charity lunch and fashion show, attendees of the foundation’s latest event saw designs from Angel Clothing in their new summer collection in a bid to raise even more for local organisations.

ONE woman sadly died after a fire in an apartment block on Avenida de Ramon y Cajal, Fuengirola on Thursday March 16.

The Fuengirola Council subsequently announced an official mourning in memory of the woman on Friday March 17.

On Thursday March 16, the Euro Weekly News were at the scene and talked to police but no cause of the blaze had as yet been confirmed.

Elena’s husband, John Frutos, told the Euro Weekly News: “Elena was one of the original members of La Sala and watched it grow into the huge success that it is. The charity is a nice way for others to celebrate Elena and it is a good feeling to use the money raised on local charities.”

Thomas Barnes, son of the owner of Anthony’s Antiques located next to the scene managed to save the woman’s husband from the burning apartment, but unfortunately the fire and smoke was too bad to save the woman.

The police and fire brigade attended the scene, with locals who brought ladders to help the other occupants of the building escape the blaze.

FOR the second consecutive year, February has closed in Marbella with a record number of Social Security registrations.

This is the best figure in the historical series, which covers the last 21 years. As usual, employment is already dynamic in the municipality with the proximity of Easter and 1,523 contributions have been gained in addition to 65 selfemployed workers.

After six consecutive months of declining employment in the municipality, as a result of the usual seasonality, in February Social Security enrolment increased again, in what will be the usual trend for Easter and the summer.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Social Security, there were 71,149 contributors in Marbella at the end of February, 1,523 more than in January (+2.18 per cent).

This is a rise that is in line with what was usual in recent years before the pandemic, although far from the significant increase last year with more than 4,000 new contributors.

SOME would rather forget, but Marbella has celebrated the occasion of the third anniversary of when the State of Alarm was called for the Covid19 pandemic.

The elderly homes of the municipality have since awarded recognition to the mayor, Angeles Munoz, and the former Minister of Health and President of the Andalucian Parliament, Jesus with regard to their management during the health crisis.

Synapses and Herbariums

UNTIL March 31 the Museo del Grabado will host the ‘Cycle of Synapses and Herbariums’ exhibition.

A herbarium is a collection of dried plant specimens mounted on sheets of paper. The plants are usually collected in situ (eg, where they were growing in nature), identified by experts, pressed, and then carefully mounted to archival paper in such a way that all major morphological characteristics are visible (ie, both sides of the leaves and the floral structures).

The mounted plants are labelled with their proper scientific names, the name of the collector, and, usually, information about where they were collected and how they grew and general observations. The specimens are commonly filed in cases according to families and genera and are available for ready reference.

The museum is located at Calle Hospital Bazan, s/n, 29601 Marbella.
