ALICANTE City Council has now authorised the launch of a new weekly market in Urbanova.

The market with 26 stalls will sell a mixture of handicrafts, textiles and food products every Thursday, on Calle Musico Jose Mira Figueroa from 4.00pm until 11.00pm.

The market will remain open throughout the summer until September 28.

The non­sedentary sales markets have a relevant importance in the supply of basic products to the population. According to studies carried out, 58.3 per cent of the residents of the munici­ pality usually go to them to purchase daily goods.

In Alicante, there are four street markets located in Teulada, Carolinas, Babel and Benalua which will now be complemented by the new one located in Urbanova.

ORIHUELA City Council has now received a grant of €10,000 from the Costa Blanca Tourist Board to help advertise the city as a tourist destination.

In addition, the Provincial Tourist Board has awarded another grant of €2,507.12 for the publication of a brochure relating to festivals in the municipality.

The brochure, which is already avail ­ firmed: “The city council supports and vindicates the importance of buying in our municipal markets and in traditional local commerce of quality and proximity with the aim of keeping it active and promoting it so that residents and visitors can make their purchases on a weekly basis.”

Port stops

DURING the month of July, seven cruise ships are scheduled to arrive in Alicante, three of them as home ports. The first ship which arrived last week was the MSC Virtuosa with the bulk of the passengers coming from the United Kingdom.

Mobile library

BOOKWORMS will be pleased to hear that throughout July, the mobile library bus will be taking a trip to Arenals de Sol every Tuesday and Thursday Morning. The bus will open from 10.00am until 1.00pm.

10% Discount

A DOZEN shops in Elche joined together to carry out an initiative with a double objective: to revitalise local commerce and encourage the use of bicycles. Customers who arrived by bicycle on July 10 received a 10% discount on their purchases.

Police rescue

THE Rojales Local Police rescued an 86­year­old woman who had fallen and was unable to get up for several days. The woman’s son who lives in Belgium called the police who found the lady dehydrated.
