hat you have in your hands is not a book, nor a dossier, nor a brochure. We could name it a reflection, a way of expression, or just the beginning of a relation. We ignore how much time our beloved reader will spend observing or reading what we have written. In fact, we cannot go to far. In this short space of reading —just a flash, or a glance— we express what we do and what we want to be, and if we want to be humble, maybe we should not say a word. We do not know. The purpose of this edition lies on a single word: “captivate”. Let me continue through the path of simplicity, making a confession: we have been the first ones to be captivated while we were designing what we have offered you for a little while. We enjoy explaining where we come from, we want to focus on what we have been for many years, on what we do and how we do it. We live in a world full of shades, uncertainties and opportunities. We are part of it. We work hard for a thrilling project. We hope you enjoy the reading. We will keep imagining.

SO LET’S TRAVEL, FOR THE WORLD IS WIDE.
Ramon Tremosa Member of the European Parliament
I
n December 2007 I visited a company near Manresa. As I walked in the industrial unit, I was deeply surprised to see the weaving plant working vigorously. The cutting-edge looms had been recently purchased in Switzerland and they allowed the obtaining of a high quality product. A small company, heir of the secular Catalan textile tradition, in this case a family business, starts everyday against all predictions. The company employs a group of workers and gives them a lift in person as in Bages —our region— public transport is almost non-existent. However, nowadays this Company generates sales of several € millions and exports a 70% of its production to Europe, Middle East and Asia —including China. “You are in the wrong century” I remember telling them. “Why do we have to change our
job if this is the profession we know and that we enjoy?”, they answered. Working from sunup to sundown, travelling with no pause and flying every week, leaving home at 4 am to be at the Airport at 6 am, flying from Barcelona to different European cities, they seek to obtain sales door to door. The company sells as much production as possible directly to the final consumer, who —it goes without saying— widens the commercial margins; for instance, in a Nautical Fair in a German city, they obtain an order of hundreds of high quality towels, tablecloth and bed sheets. The website of the Company is offered in Catalan and English, so let’s travel, for the world is wide.

TRADITION OF TEXTILE INDUSTRY CATALONIA HAS BEEN FILLED WITH TEXTILE COLONIES SINCE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. CENTURIES OF HISTORY AS ENTREPRENEURIAL BASE.
T
extile activity has involved several generations of workers and has had —and still holds— a decisive role in the configuration of the economic and social reality of the present-day Catalonia, which can even be seen in our own language and landscape. A brief review on the Catalan textile history is necessary to understand who we are and why we are here. THE BEGINNINGS
At the Neolithic Era, civilisation abandoned animal leathers to be protected from the cold, and exchanged it for a much lighter second-skin. This is when textile production started. Women manually spun the fibres and they turned the threads into the ligaments that lead to the weave. Depending on the climate, colder or temperate, the fibres had a vegetable or animal origin. The vegetable ones were cotton and linen, whereas the animal ones were wool and silk. Whereas cotton and linen have to be cultivated, silk is obtained from butterfly caterpillar, and wool from the shearing of sheep. Catalonia is a mountainous country with plenty of pasture fields. As a result, woollen industry strongly increased during the Middle Ages. The numerous sheep flocks in the Pyrenees provided with the necessary wool for the popula-
tion. Most of the raw material and manufactured weaves were exported to Nordic countries. BASES OF THE TEXTILE INDUSTRIALIZATION
Historical experience of Catalan industrialization can be explained through three reasons. On the one hand, production was mainly thought to be complementary to the agricultural society, and was meant for distant markets. The development of textile work in interior Catalonia during the 13th Century —first wool and then cotton— as well as the presence of Catalan textile merchants in the Peninsula and American colonies were part of the base of the industrialization. On the other hand, the metropolis of Barcelona played a vital role. Barcelona has been considered a Mediterranean commercial city. The harbour area was the entrance gate for cotton and wool, coal and machines, and the point of departure for manufactured products. Thirdly, the Alpine model should be highlighted. Catalan rivers coming from the Pyrenees enabled an industrial growth of the textile sector in the interior of Catalonia. The driving force of these rivers with their waterfalls is what generated hydraulic power. First, thanks to the hydraulic wheel. Second, through the turbines along the Ter and Llobregat rivers. Third, through the hydroelectric systems.

STREAM MACHINE
Since 1840, a real technological revolution took place. This real “change of technological regime was due to the steam engine and a wide range of new machines and new industrial and transport processes. The central element of the increase of the productive efficiency consisted in the use of machines at the factories and transports. Steam engine was the motor that kept the machinery working. It consists of a relatively simple process of condensing water in a boiler from the combustion of coal, which provides the energy for the factories. Moreover, there were few restrictions concerning the location. Steam engines increased in the Industrial Europe and coal remained in the centre of the new energy system. The basic impulse of industrial revolution
Monumental vapour machine (BerguedĂ )
in Catalonia came from the cotton, as in almost all European regions. Catalan cotton industry strongly increased during this period. Woollen industry had a similar transformation thanks to the mechanization and production in factories equipped with steam engines. The increase in the size of the plants gave birth to economies of scale, and technical changes lead to improvements in the quality of the woven material.
BUILDINGS AND TEXTILE COLONIES
New technologies consisting of heavy machines lead to a revolution in the industrial building. Columns and iron beams replaced stone and wooden materials, and industrial engineers replaced the old masters in the construction of factories.
Antique shuttle loom
Apart from new constructions, textile industry chose new locations. On the one hand, wool industry became stronger in the twin cities of the Vallès Occidental. On the other hand, cotton industry was massively located near the Llobregat, Ter and Cardener rivers, next to the industrial colonies. In addition, it abandoned the coast, where they received the imported coal. Towards the end of the 19th century, textile industry organised itself through independent colonies: houses for workers were built along the rivers and around the factories, where there was plenty of water. The Colònia Vidal, at Puig-reig
Vidal colony (Berguedà)
(Berguedà), has preserved his entire industrial heritage since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The colony included the industrial complex dedicated to the woven material and cotton, and a residential area for workers with basic facilities (shops, sinks, a church, a pharmacy and a school).
POLITICS OF 20TH CENTURY
Year by year, from the beginning of the 20th century, politics spread over the country, and in the factories as well. People claimed for a republic, but once it was established, working conditions
{ 22 | 23 }
did not improve significantly. Agitation and crisis were increasing day after day. Soviet influence made people want to change the working system, dominated by an absolute, paternalistic hierarchy from the business owners to the proletariat. War and post-war were followed by a long period under Franco’s dictatorship. Those were times of economic hindrances and a serious cultural and social crisis. Little by little, economy got better and some commercial and financial deals with Argentina and America were successfully concluded. A fine light was starting to shine at the end of a tumultuous period.
IT IS ESSENTIAL TO KNOW IN ORDER TO IMPROVE AND WE MUST LEARN FROM THE PAST TO BUILD A BETTER FUTURE. HISTORY GOES ON, AND EURTEX KEEPS MOVING FORWARD .
Spain became part of international economic organizations like OCDE and IMF (International Monetary Fund). The doors were opened to a new world, leaving a country deeply influenced by a dictatorship. Catalonia opens itself to European and international markets, starting a new period of economic, cultural and social growth. MOVING FORWARD
In the textile industry (as in no other industry) there are no entrepreneurs with “official” initiative. Industries are born, they grow up, and prosper thanks to the initiative of free entrepreneurs who seek and find capital, who make their products attractive for the market, the appropriate workers to produce it, the machinery and the human staff as well as the logistics and the finance. It is important to revive the past of the textile industry. It is essential to know in order to improve and we must learn from the past to build a better future. History goes on, and Eurtex keeps moving forward. Jacquard looms

HISTORY OF THE C0MPANY
I
n 1998 Antoni Cuadrench i Fort and his son Joan Cuadrench i Ribas constitue the company Eurtex. The linen tradition of the Cuadrench family goes back to the middle of the 19th century when Antoni’s grandfather, Joan Fort i Palau emigrated to Barcelona and started recycling used jute sacks. The family business has undergone a constant evolution, maintaining the company as a reference for the commercialization of linen, fibers and synthetic fabrics in the Technical Textiles market since the middle of the 20th century, and developing in parallel, under the name Eurtex, the design, manufacturing and distribution of table, bed and bath linen for the hotel and restaurant branch.

E
urtex suddenly appears printed in black letters on a yellow paper, a day of short afternoon, in a commercial document of a notary in Manresa. A Sunday afterdinner idea that links father and son between many corporate projects that have woven history and filled the territory for years. Seen from the distance given by the time, it seems to me as an accomplishment of a ritual, of a traditional step of our culture. We did not have any product or market, not even the productive means to work. What made us move? This is precisely the question the Director of Strategic Sourcing Hilton Worldwide John Gallaher asked me recently. From that short walk along the Passeig de Manresa ending in the armchairs of the Hilton offices, time has run fast. Many people have wondered how many generations we have worked for or who was the great-grandfather founder. Not at all. Time passes and we walk. More than walking, we have flown and flown. Three fulfilled passports in 16 years, in 40 countries, and a staff of 34 members. Firstly, we obtained the product. By 2000,
tablecloth and napkins, then bed-shits and towels. We positioned ourselves in the market and we bought looms. “Obviously, if we want to be different at producing and serving, we have to weave at home”. Later, the cutting machines and workshops. It has been almost ten years. “I remember we did not know what a mitred corner was, and we looked for an old farmer to teach us”. The day when the house became the world finally arrived. First, offices in Mexico, and then in Hong Kong, Singapore and Moscow. In the end, after the commercial offshoring, we decide to permanently settle down in Dubai. “Service means always being in touch”. It has been a year since we opened a new factory in Sant Fruitós de Bages, 4000m2 next to an irrigation channel. Looms, a laboratory, a cutting room, a technical confection room, a design workshop and several offices. Every once in a while, I think of it and I say to myself: “Certainly, in that short afternoon at the notary in the Passeig, my father and I sat down. Eurtex probably already existed in a corner of my greatgrandfathers’ chest of drawers”. Joan Cuadrench i Ribas

VALUES AND PHILO SOPHY
EURTEX IS A PROJECT FOCUSED ON THE CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT OF PRODUCTS DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED ACCORDING TO THE EUROPEAN SOCIAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND QUALITY VALUES. IT IS A TOOL FOR THE PROFESSIONAL AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT OF THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE UP OUR STAFF AND WHO, BY IDENTIFYING WITH THEIR OWN REGION, TRY TO REACH A GLOBAL NATURE. TRADITION AND CUSTOMS THAT WERE INHERITED FOR CENTURIES AND CAREFULLY TRANSMITTED THROUGH GENERATIONS OF INDUSTRIALISTS MAKE THE SYMBOLIC VALUE ALMOST AS IMPORTANT AS THE MATERIAL. OUR HISTORY IS BASED ON INNOVATION AND CONSTANT RESEARCH WHILE CAREFULLY PRESERVING ANCIENT RECIPES.
SELECTING THE RAW MATERIAL The yarn selection is done through a careful process in which direct contact between the producer and the natural fibre transformer becomes crucial. The direct relationship between the producer and the transformer, and the monitoring of their farming methods are a guarantee of the best possible selection of fibre in every harvest. It’s also guaranteed that the whole process is done with respect to the ecosystem. Non intensive cultivation,
no use of transgenic technologies, pesticides or artificial irrigation coming from desalinated water, which harms the length, fineness and softness of fibre as well as the soil health. This is the result of a company culture based on years of collaboration with producers with whom we sign long-term contracts, instead of choosing the open market. This gives our harvesters financial security and allows us to require strict quality standards, environmentally friendly and sustainable crops.
OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH NATURE In the beginning we asked ourselves how nature works and how we interact with it. The answer is that our compromise doesn’t have to be only with the clients and the market, but also with the environment and its preservation.
There is a growing environmental awareness and clients want to know and have the information about the origin of the products they buy and their manufacturing process. They want to know the ethical commitment from their suppliers and the impact that their purchases can have on our planet and its sustainability.
OUR SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION Our project is oriented to the development of products which are designed and manufactured according to the European social values. The human team is not a productive resource, but a group of people who authentically share a business project and also a single enterprise view, which promotes the bases of a professional culture
within positive and encouraging work environments. We practice the vocation of giving a public dimension to people with physical or intellectual disabilities, and we work so they can be socially integrated.
COMPANY CULTURE Tradition and custom acquired during centuries and transmitted through generations of factory workers make the symbolic value almost as important as the material. Therefore, it’s necessary to know the productive methods in depth.
Our culture is based on innovation and constant research, but at the same time carefully preserving the ancient recipes. It’s as necessary to be honest with the product as with the way and the processes involved.

QUALITY BEGINS WITH THE DESIGN
N
owadays Eurtex has such an infrastructure that enables all the textile productive process. The product is developed from a real idea in a single building. The previous fact is essential to understand the philosophy of the Company, in which there is a strict control of the whole productive process. Eurtex has a creative workshop, a textile plant, a dressmaking room, a quality laboratory, a picking department and several offices to keep in permanent touch with the customer. Embracing the whole process facilitates the control in all the phases, making it possible to take part in any step of the process. Having a strict control on the product is one of Eurtex’s values. In that sense, we can detect possible mistakes and correct them in an easy and direct way.

CREATIVITY AS AN ESSENCE Eurtex is another element among others in the atmosphere that is created in a restaurant, hotel or a specific space. We conceive textile activity from a personalized approach, working for a market that seeks the uniqueness of the product. Starting from genuine designs, we strengthen the personality and character of hotels and restaurants. Therefore, the first step to develop a quality product is creativity. The creativity department —in Eurtex we call it “The kitchen”— is in charge of designing the textile product from a conceptual and aesthetic point of view. In this embryonic phase a design is created through the interpretation of customer’s idea to make it original, unique, functional, long lasting and viable from an industrial point of view.

PERSONALIZED DESIGN The design of the textile product —for a table, bed or bath— is exclusively created by giving an answer to the customer’s requirements. This is essential, for we work in a personalized and accurate way in each project. In order to succeed in this process, the creative department has a designing workshop that works carefully in every project to give the precise answer to the customer’s need. We use artistic techniques such as drawing, fountain pen or aquarelle to achieve a unique design. Apart from artistic techniques, the department works with advanced computer software. We faci-

litate the product process through the “Penelope Jacquard” software, obtaining a real simulation of the proposed fabric. Once the simulation is obtained, we create a textile proposal trough the incorporation of final elements —as festoons, embroideries...— with its required characteristics and dimensions. It should be highlighted that Eurtex also works with 3D simulations, which give the fabric a real aspect and the possibility to see the result from different angles. The possibility of making an analogy of the real fabric placed in the requested environment makes it easier for the costumer to visualize his demand in a realistic and graphic way.

{ 44 | 45 }
FROM THE DESIGN TO THE FABRIC The customer’s design proposal is converted to fabric through specialized software. In order to perform this task, design is redrawn through textile parameters. This is a technical and accurate process, where intangible assets become real fabric. Therefore, the loom requires an understandable design, where the movement between weft and warp are merged to create a real fabric. This type of drawing is called Jacquard, where the ligament is created from the links between weft and warp. Consequently, the loom identifies the ligament, encodes it and converts it into cloth. Eurtex works with cutting-edge looms, which can enable up to 3m wide fabrics without drawing limitation. The looms are versatile and fast, so we make high quality products in an efficient way.

{ 48 | 49 }
FROM THE CLOTH TO THE PRODUCT Once the product is woven, it is time to give it a personal shape. Firstly, the cloth passes a serious of finishing steps (bleaching, mercerization and calendering) so it obtains the optimum conditions required by the customer. The make-up workshop is in charge of transforming the cloth into a product with an appearance and uniqueness. Initially, the cloth is manually cut following the dimensions and shape requirements. Once the cloth is cut, it is carefully weaved by a sewing machine. Catalan textile tradition is fundamental, since Eurtex is in possession of experienced and proficient stitchers. This is essential, as the product is made through a great technique and quality. Apart from the quality fabric, dressmaking also includes processes of hemstitch, festoons or embroidery. This finishing process that includes combinations of colours, designs and styles is what makes every piece a unique value.

Therefore, Eurtex has a complete textile production system. We build the concept, the idea, the design and the fabric until we obtain the perfect product.

QUALITY IS ALSO IMPRO VING
O
ne of the most distinctive points of Eurtex is the pursuit of excellence concerning its service and products. This is why it entails a quality department. Quality is present throughout all the productive process: from the raw material to final distribution and customer service, including all stages. Eurtex stands for high quality products, with a high value in terms of design, personalization and singularity. In order to guarantee a good product, Eurtex holds a sophisticated laboratory with cutting-edge instruments that guarantee the best results.
{ 54 | 55 }
THE QUALITY CONTROL IN EURTEX’S PRODUCTIVE PROCESS Referring to the productive process, there are 4 key quality points: the thread, the raw fabric, the finished fabric and the making-up. The thread: Eurtex certifies thread suppliers according to strict criteria. Concerning the approval, exhaustive tests are made with different threads: resistance, metric number, composition and colour, among others. We have threads of various compositions, mainly of natural origin like cotton and linen. Combinations like cotton-linen or polyestercotton can also be found. Every thread shipment received is checked out to the last detail and is selected or rejected according to some technical stipulations. Raw fabric: Eurtex owns high-technology looms, plain and jacquard. A good yarn not only makes profitable production. It also allows obtaining an excellent fabric. Finished fabric: The finishing process is a necessary step because the fabric must feel and look as the client desires. Eurtex finishes their products to specialized companies with the more experience. Thanks to this, we can guarantee a high level of fastness. Making-up: The cutting process can be done by hand or mechanised. We do it by hand when we need an extreme precision. This is when we

make very small napkins or special products. In the stitching process we employ modern sewing machines, as well as in the embroidery, festoon and hemstitching machines. In all this process, the workshop checks the requirements of every client, taking care of the product until the last detail. Eurtex workers are delighted to know who and where are they working for. They work with passion each product, in order to thrill the costumer.
CERTIFICATIONS OF QUALITY
This certification guarantees that 50% of the linen bought and used by Eurtex has a European origin. European linen guarantees quality because one of its main characteristics is the long fibre, which gives the thread a high resistance, a few peeling in the fabric and a much longer life.
Oeko-Tex is a certification given by the prestigious textile laboratory of Aitex. This label guarantees that our products are ready to be in contact with human skin, they do not cause allergies or adverse reactions.
ISO 9001 is a very useful certification for Eurtex as it enables us to keep improving various organizational aspects from the different departments of the Company in order to maximize customer satisfactionl client.
