University provides you with endless opportunities to broaden your horizons, try out new things and ask as many questions as you need to, to help you along the way! There are tons of ways to get involved this week and this guide can help you work out where you want to be and when. I’m one of your five full-time student officers and in addition to supporting student activities, my job is to oversee the events, shops and bars that the Students’ Association provides in each of its four buildings and in other spaces, as well as to make sure that sustainability is central to our services. I’ll be all over campus this week, so be sure to come over and say hi! After this week I’ll be around all year to help you out, just send me a message by email (VPactivities@eusa.ed.ac.uk), Twitter (@EdUniVPAS) or Facebook (/EdUniVPActivitiesServices) or visit me in the Students’ Association office based at Potterrow. We’ve planned an unforgettable and jam-packed week with events for everyone to enjoy. I hope you all have a fantastic time and look forward to meeting you soon! ACADEMIC INDUCTION Alongside Edinburgh University Students’ Association’s Welcome Week, the University itself will be offering you a warm welcome to your academic studies. You can look out for the University’s Welcome Week logo on communications from your School/College and on signage around the campus. During Welcome Week your School will host a variety of events, including compulsory welcome talks and subject area activities. These events aim to introduce you to the academic staff who will be teaching and supervising you, the administrative staff who support you, and your fellow students. They will discuss important information about beginning your studies here at the University of Edinburgh. Make sure you read the information sent to you by your school for details about your specific school/programme activities. You can find more information about academic events on the new student website: ed.ac.uk/new-students.

Phil Jerrod began his stand-up career underneath an Angus Steakhouse in 2012. Since then, he has failed his PhD, walked out of his job in publishing and has been entertaining audiences up and down the country with his elegant rants on the often unfathomable problems of modern life.

Grab a glass of bubbly, meet other like-minded people and hear from some exciting speakers.
We present Junior Coffee, a New Orleans jazz band formed out of Edinburgh’s eclectic street band scene. Hear the authentic sounds of New Orleans streets through carefully crafted arrangements.
A band who don’t take themselves too seriously, without losing their ability to create highly technical garage rock tunes. The duo formed after having been in a previous band together. Combining their efforts to write songs collaboratively, they realised they were creating something that was a huge departure from what they had been used to, and they loved it. Taking inspiration from the likes of Electric Six, The Hives, Television, Ramones and B-52s, the second song they ever wrote was immediately picked up by US TV show Limitless with their track No Easy Way Out being used in the opening moments of the first episode. Look out for their new material and up and coming gig!

The Fair is your chance to find out more about these courses, through informal discussions with academic staff and current students from across the University’s many Schools.
Join the Students’ Association’s Black and Minority Ethnic, Disabled Students’, LGBT+ and Women’s Officers for an informal chat about student life and how you can get involved in social justice campaigns on campus! Lunch included.
Come with us to visit a medieval building from 1446! This trip is a fantastic chance to venture outside the city centre and learn a bit about Midlothian’s history!
To ensure that you get the most out of this event we strongly recommend that you research your course options before attending. Checkout the Academic Fair section of the New Student webpages: ed.ac.uk/students/new-students. THE RISING SOULS
WITH SUPPORT FROM THE DEADLY WINTERS AND VAN TASTIK Underground, Teviot Row House 9pm – 12am EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
TUE 12 SEP
The night will be headlined by The Rising Souls, a dynamic soulful rock band hailing from Scotland’s capital city. Their music is a punchy and intoxicating amalgamation of rock and soul. Think meaty riffs. Think intricate grooves. Think soaring vocals. The Rising Souls are rising to the top and at an alarming rate. Best to catch them now while you still can. There will also be support from the neo-folk band The Deadly Winters. With well-constructed melodies and lovingly crafted stories, The Deadly Winters are part Folk-Rock, part Americana. They bring you tales of sorrow, love, debauchery and murder…in a very catchy, foot-tapping way. The band enjoy their time on stage and they look to bring everyone along on the journey with them. They have shared stages with lauded Scottish singer/songwriter Dougie Maclean and The Staves and have appeared at Celtic Connections, Perthshire Amber (Dougie MacLean Festival), Bannockburn Live, Edinburgh’s St Andrew’s Day and numerous times at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We are also excited to host Van Tastik, an Edinburgh based blues/folk acoustic sensation. FREE WITH WELCOME WEEK WRISTBAND / £5 WITHOUT ALL WELCOME | LIVE ENTERTAINMENT | PARTY
