Tips for getting the most out of Uni
Edinburgh University Students’ Association is a charity (SC015800) and a company limited by guarantee (SC429897) registered in Scotland.
WEL COME Welcome to the first edition of The Gem, our new annual magazine designed especially for you, Undergraduates and Postgraduates, whether you’re from down the road or 8,000 miles away!
ELERI CONNICK Students’ Association President
Your life here at the University of Edinburgh is about so much more than just your degree. The Gem is full of useful information to help you settle in and make the most of the support and opportunities available to you. We’ve got the inside scoop on the best club nights, best coffee spots in town and of course all of the incredible Societies and student groups — fancy hitchhiking to Paris?
We also have features on our amazing liberation campaigns and how you can get involved in shaping your experience at university, from bringing a motion to student council to becoming a school rep. You really can make a difference here and the opportunities to try something new are endless. From learning Capoeira to gaming with your friends, and from setting up life changing social enterprises to building a Formula 1 car, trying something new is easy here, and that’s why my favourite part of this magazine is the quotes from our amazing students. I hope you enjoy this first issue and please do contact me at president@eusa.ed.ac.uk if there are any topics you’d like to see covered in the future. ■

YOUR SABBS! 08 // THE GEM
W
We are your Sabbatical Officers for 2018/19 and we are SO excited to be working together to represent YOU! We were all elected in March in the Student Elections, and it’s our job to listen to students and work to make your visions a reality. Whether that’s something you’d like to fix or change, or an idea for a campaign or an event — we’re here to help you with that! We offer support for you in so many aspects. From student welfare, to community and housing, to education and your academic experience, right the way through to all of your activities and services! Although individually we all have our own areas of work, some of which you’ll read about later on in this magazine, as a team we have some goals that we are all working on together! BUILDING A STUDENT COMMUNITY Building a student community is something we really strive for and we want Edinburgh to not only be a place of study, but to be a place where you feel at home! By engaging not only with our students, but also with the wider public, we really hope to create a sense of community.
SUPPORT We will really focus on improving the support offered to you, and to make you aware of all the services offered to you! We are always here to help, whether it be managing finances, academic worries, or personal difficulties. From academic or personal stress, to simply wanting help or advice on building up your CV, the University and your Students’ Association should be there for you!
LIBERATION This year we will continue to advocate with and for underrepresented students. People can often feel excluded and marginalised, but the Students’ Association fights to make the University a more welcoming place, where everyone is valued and respected. ■

GREAT! CALUM SKED (He/Him)
|
4th Year History and Politics Undergraduate I’ve volunteered as a youth basketball coach since I started at university. Having volunteering experience helped me get a job as a student member of staff with the Students’ Association, working in the Activities Team. Now I get to help fellow students find volunteering opportunities that they are passionate about!
18 // THE GEM
People often think that you need lots of free time to volunteer. Truth is, even a couple of hours here and there can make a real difference, and even pave the road towards a career. Through the Students’ Association’s Volunteering Service and Volunteering Societies, a broad range of opportunities exist across health, conservation and the environment, children and schools, advice, support and many more! Take a look online at eusa.ed.ac.uk/volunteering to find your perfect opportunity to do something great!

SPORT AT EDINBURGH Sport is one of the best ways to enhance your experience at the University of Edinburgh. As the Sports Union President, I am especially proud of the variety of activity we offer. We want everyone to have the opportunity to try a new sport or continue to develop a passion. We’ve got 65 different Sports Clubs, competing from beginner level to Olympic level. We offer everything from traditional sports such as Hockey, Football and Rugby right across the spectrum to Skydiving, Kendo and new for 2018 — Parkour. We are proud of our world class facilities at both Pleasance and Peffermill and with exciting developments in the pipeline, the future looks even brighter.
PAUL DUFFY Edinburgh University Sports Union (EUSU) President
Sport at Edinburgh would not be complete without our intramural and recreational programmes and our Coaching and Volunteering Academy. Intramural offers sport within our University community that requires no training and allows participants to enjoy the chance to just rock up and play. While our recreational offering includes our successful EdEx (Edinburgh Experience) programme where you can give something new a go. You could be taking windsurfing lessons one week, on the squash court the next or take to the slopes on a snowboard on another. There are endless opportunities all at a very low cost and with no commitment! Please do come to the Sports and Fitness Fair in Welcome Week, and check out eusu.ed.ac.uk and our social media for all the opportunities available! ■
If you’re playing or supporting a team at Peffermill, drop by the Clubhouse — there are great value post-match meals on offer! eusa.ed.ac.uk/peffermill.

Joining a Society or Sports Club really can improve your whole university experience. From spending time doing something you love, to adding skills and experience to your CV, it’s a great way to get involved and meet new people. However, with over 340+ student-led groups, it can be hard to know what you want to do! Give It A Go! is the perfect opportunity to try a bunch of tasters — no strings attached. It’s a whole week of activities (14 – 20 Jan), designed to help you experience what being part of a student group feels like. It’s a great way to discover your hidden hobbies and talents! Find out more at eusa.ed.ac.uk/GiveItAGo. ■ SHAY DAVIS-WILLIAMS (She/Her) Students’ Association Vice President Activities & Services Shay leads on representing students in relation to the Students’ Association’s commercial services, space and facilities. EDINBURGH STUDENTS ABROAD
Calling Edinburgh home is one of the many reasons why people choose to study here. Still, we’d never turn down the opportunity of packing our Instagram with destinations far, far away, so we can’t blame you if you feel like mixing it up a bit. Lucky for you, there are plenty of opportunities to venture the big, wide world as a student, whether it’s through your Society, studying abroad or hitchhiking your way to Paris. The one thing to remember, we’re here for you no matter where you are across the globe. Here are the experiences of three students who ventured further afield this year and came back to tell their tale! 22 // THE GEM
HAKIM NORAZMAN
1st Year Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate To be a member of the only British team to participate in the 2018 SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition in California was the culmination of many months of hard work carried out by a spectrum of young, inspiring people — many of whom I now call my friends. HYPED Society has given me a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of something truly special.
GREG BUNTING
2nd Year Philosophy Undergraduate Volunteering alongside my incredible team, we organised RAG’s annual ‘Race2Paris’: a 48-hour sponsored hitchhike from Edinburgh to Paris, where teams spend no money on transport. It was incredibly fun, with the added bonus of fundraising nearly £50,000 for various charities! Think meeting tonnes of new people, fundraising for a charity of your choice, and coming out of it with stories for the grandkids, which would put ‘How I Met Your Mother’ to shame.
SOPHIE PARSONS
4th Year French Undergraduate My year abroad in France was a great experience, which not only helped improve my French, but also taught me how to manage challenging situations. New friends and wonderful places were the highlights for me. Saying that, my year abroad underlined how lucky we are to be students at Edinburgh University and I couldn’t wait to get back! ■
GLOBAL BUDDIES Are you keen to be part of a vibrant global community, but don’t feel like leaving home? As a Global Buddies volunteer, you get to learn about other cultures and meet people from across the world, without ever leaving Edinburgh! Find out more at eusa.ed.ac.uk/global.

STUDENTS IN THE
COMMUNITY
“Being at the University of Edinburgh gives you many opportunities, including being lucky enough to live in a beautiful capital city!“ GEORGIE HARRIS (She/Her) Students’ Association Vice President Community
24 // THE GEM
Georgie Harris is this year’s Students’ Association Vice President Community. In her role she works directly on matters relating to students as local residents, including housing, transport and sustainability. Being at the University of Edinburgh gives you many opportunities, including being lucky enough to live in a beautiful capital city. With so much going on at our campuses around Edinburgh, it’s easy to remain in the student bubble! However, there are loads of ways to become actively involved in your local community, from leafy Marchmont to vibrant Leith. The Students’ Association runs its own Volunteering Service, having connections with organisations and social enterprises around Edinburgh. This lets you get involved locally, help out in the community, and develop new skills that can be recognised on your academic record. There are also student Societies dedicated solely to carrying out fun and rewarding community projects — check them out at eusa.ed.ac.uk/activities. Below are just a couple of examples of fantastic work Edinburgh students are doing in the local community.
Myself and a few other students set up a new social awareness project, ‘COLOURS (Collecting Lost or Underrepresented Refugee Stories) of Edinburgh’ which aims to create a platform for refugees in Scotland to share their voices through art. Working with local charities supporting refugees, we interviewed refugees who have resettled here about their experiences and created info packs for artists and photographers, who created pieces that were displayed and auctioned at our exhibition. It has shown how through students coming together we can make a real social impact.
I volunteer with Sexpression Edinburgh, a student led charity which designs and offers free sexual health and relationships education to local schools. We cover a variety of topics such as consent, healthy relationships and body image. In the past year our student volunteers have taught 79 lessons in five schools in and around Edinburgh. In addition to this, we organise various campaigns and events on campus, including giving out sexual education material at the Big Cheese in Potterrow. ■ Low Shin Thong 3rd Year Medicine Undergraduate

LIVING IN UNIVERSITY ACCOMMODATION Living in a new city, and sometimes for the first time away from home, can feel like a daunting prospect, but for those who live in University accommodation, there are over 200 students employed to help you settle in, feel at home and support you while you are living there. These students are called Resident Assistants (RAs). We spoke with one of them, Alina, to find out more!
L
Life as an RA means no two days are the same! We have a wide range of duties, which are all aimed at creating positive experiences for students living in halls of residence. We are a friendly team who help create an environment that feels like home, where students can have fun together and support each other — halls are really one of the best places to make new friends! We’re here to help you do that and encourage residents to try out an array of events, from academic essay writing workshops to cultural celebrations of worldwide

festivities, and charity football games to sustainability bag decoration masterclasses. Not only do we aspire to build a community of friendships, but to help students build on existing skills in their academic, sport, wellbeing and other aspects of life. All RAs are very approachable on any issue, often being the first point of contact regarding any problems or questions students may have. We have a close working relationship with other University support services
and the Students’ Association to ensure students are aware of the support systems available to them at university. Overall, RAs are there to bond with students in halls of residence in (mostly!) fun and sometimes more serious situations. Residents are never alone at their accommodation — we do our best to be there for you at all times, to ensure you have the most rewarding, enjoyable and smooth start to your Undergrad or Postgrad studies as possible! ■

Considerit Doughnuts
Loft Bar Terrace
Considerit Doughnuts is home to the yummiest doughnuts in town, and they sell out quick! Just opposite Summerhall, this incredible independent bakery makes new tasty doughnuts everyday and guess what, THEY ARE VEGAN! My personal favourite is the Oreo Doughnut!
Tucked away at the top of Teviot Row House, the Loft Bar Terrace is ideal for a quiet (and reasonably priced!) drink after a long day of classes! A bonus: the open terrace also makes for a beautiful setting under the stars!
The Wrap Bar There is nothing more famous at King’s Buildings than ‘The Wrap Bar’. You’ll find the Wrap Bar in KB Centre and it’ll be busy all day long. The wonderful staff will make you up a wrap with whatever you want — my personal favourite is Falafel and Feta. However, any filling is possible and always super yum — plus they are a BARGAIN. I look forward to seeing you there this year!

Paradise Palms is a very LGBT+ friendly venue and is an alternative bar with the best veggie and vegan food in town! They also have a never-ending list of fun and tasty cocktails, all at a good price. The décor is incredible, right from the bar to the jungle themed toilets and they often host local DJs which is really exciting to go along to! (And they allow dogs!)
Baristo Café A cute little café tucked away next to our Potterrow offices. Sat on Bristo Square, it is a super convenient location, and has fantastic coffees and sandwiches all at a good price! The staff are always very welcoming and with its recent renovation, it’s a great place to sit and take a break from your busy day of studying.
Looking to heat up your lunch between classes? The Students’ Association has free-to-use microwaves and a boiling water tap in the Dome Café in Potterrow!

We know that each of you will come to Edinburgh having been shaped by the identities you hold and the experiences you have had. We want everyone to feel at home here, but we know that for some students — especially those of you from marginalised groups — community is particularly important. Our four Liberation Campaigns exist to provide a space where Black and Minority Ethnic (BME), disabled, LGBT+, and women students can come together, discuss their experiences, and campaign for a more just, inclusive, and equal University and society. We’d love for you to get involved by joining our online communities or coming along to one of our events, and if you have any questions you can get in touch with the elected Officers who lead each Campaign.

We asked each of the Liberation Officers to tell us a little bit about their aims for the year ahead and what students can look out for.
ESME This year as Women’s Officer I hope to achieve several things: working alongside Kai in their role as VP Welfare on #NoExcuse, our new campaign against sexual harassment on campus; working with Natasha to explore how trans and non-binary folks can be fully represented within the Students’ Association; and centring the voices of Black, Brown, LGBT+ and Disabled women on our campus.
EILEEN I’m so excited for this coming year which will, I’m sure, have many great events from the Liberation Campaigns. I plan on enhancing and celebrating the fabulous disabled community we have here on campus through campaigning, events and a blog that I hope you all will get involved in; as well as working with the University to ensure students get the best support.

ISABELLA My main aim for this year is to continue to enable the BME community at Edinburgh to flourish, serving as a supportive network for our students. I also want to reach out to Societies and collaborate on events, empowering more Students of Colour to get involved in the BME Campaign. And finally, I’m an ardent supporter of LiberatEd and look forward to continuing a dialogue with Schools and departments on how we can diversify and decolonise our curricula.
NATASHA I’m really excited to be working on securing more LGBT+ training for Personal Tutors and University staff. I want to foster a vibrant queer community on campus by creating better links with smaller LGBT+ groups around the University and supporting them. In LGBT+ History month I’m also aiming to arrange intersectional queer events, working with the other Liberation Campaigns to achieve this. ■

Struggling with poor mental health at University is increasingly affecting so many of us, whether that be worries about courses, concern for a friend, or more long-term conditions like bipolar disorder. It can feel difficult to get the support and understanding we need, or even to know that we need help at all. That’s why every November we organise a week-long programme of activities focused on mental health and wellbeing. Last year we had over 50 events, from wellbeing activities like alpaca petting, to more informative events like talks on living with anxiety. This year, the week will be even bigger and better, with more events run by students and staff across the University, and our keynote speaker — author and mental health advocate — Hope Virgo who’ll be talking about her experience of anorexia as a student. Stay tuned for other events throughout the year, too! Find out more about Mental Health and Wellbeing Week at eusa.ed.ac.uk/LetsTalk. ■

MENTAL HEALTH AT UNIVERSITY
KAI STUART (He/Him) 4th year Undergraduate As a carer from a low-income background, I’ve had my fair share of mental health struggles throughout my university life. I would encourage all students to utilise and champion the University’s Student Counselling Service as it provides exceptional support. Student Support Officers and Personal Tutors are equally as important. These staff are the key to a successful academic career and they will do their utmost to help you if they know you need help!
42 // THE GEM
1 in 4 of us will experience challenges with our mental health this year. Whether it’s worries about your degree, a long-term mental health condition, or something outside the classroom that’s having an impact, it’s normal to need a little extra support when things get tough. We want you to make the most of your time here, so check out Chloë and Kai’s stories below, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can find out more about the services available at eusa.ed.ac.uk/advice.
CHLOE MARVIN CHLOË (She/Her) 4th year Undergraduate Before I moved to Edinburgh, I was a bit daunted, thinking that I might not receive the support I needed as a student with mental health issues. Once here, I found Edinburgh had a plethora of excellent support available — so you don’t need to worry! For example, I’ve accessed the University’s Student Counselling Service twice (it’s available to all students). As well as this, the Student Disability Service can put in place learning adjustments to help you with the academic side of university, like deadline extensions or extra time in exams. In your School, your SSO (Student Support Officer) is your point of contact for pastoral support on your degree. More casually, I loved getting involved in the Students’ Association’s activities such as Mental Health and Wellbeing Week and the Disabled Students’ Campaign. So, when it doesn’t feel like the “best four years of your life” (which is absolutely okay), there is not only personal and academic support available, but a community in the Students’ Association! ■

Being new to university is scary. PALS seemed like a place that could make the anxiety and fear disappear, being open and friendly, not prone to judgement or criticism. I would definitely recommend attending InfPALS to everyone. I believe anyone could learn something by attending, whether it be degree related, university related, or about life in general.
The best aspect of EconPALS is the leaders encouraging students to actively take part in their learning. By engaging students in the task — for example by letting students show their approaches on the board — an inspiring learning environment is created, where everyone can learn from one another. You also get to make friends through the sessions which is a plus!
AMBER ISAACS (She/Her) English Literature and History Undergraduate PALS Leader I joined PALS to share some of my own experiences of the transition to university and become more involved within the LLC department. From recruiting and training new leaders, to attending international conferences, I’ve had many opportunities to develop my project management, teamwork, and communication skills. PALS has become an integral part of my university experience, and I would encourage everyone to get involved. Not only do you gain a lot of experience, it is a really fun programme to be a part of! ■
There are several different types of Peer Support available, depending on your School, PALS is just one of these. The other main types are: ACADEMIC FAMILIES | BUDDYING | ACADEMIC MENTORING

The Students’ Association’s annual Teaching Awards recognises great teachers and members of support teams who have had an enormous positive impact on students’ learning experiences. This year’s recipient of the Best Student Who Tutors award, Alex Gapud, reflects on what teaching means to him.
ALEX GAPUD
(He/Him) PHD Candidate, Social Anthropology
TEACHING. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.
Among the pressures endemic to a PhD and the madness of the world around us, teaching has been a haven for me. It’s been an opportunity to share the wisdom and knowledge I’ve gained about life and anthropology over the years. But it’s also been a source of hope working with some of the brightest, most promising young minds. It’s been a chance to witness a better future in the making and to play some small part in shaping it. That doesn’t mean it’s always easy; there are many things to think through. Challenges of time management, or learning how to teach. Or thinking about what this is really about and what sort of place you want your classes to be. My hope is that we keep it centred around two big things: learning (for ourselves and our students, of both our disciplines and life) and people who are more than consumers or employees, but who are in a process of becoming and have incredible worth and potential. I encourage Postgraduates to be a part of something great by teaching. Let’s do our part to shape this world into a better place. ■

If you arrive in Edinburgh and think there’s something missing in your Union, or University, you can contact us with an idea for change or a campaign you’d like to see us run! Submit your idea at eusa.ed.ac.uk/YourIdeas and we will help you bring it to fruition. If your idea is simple to implement, we can champion this for you. If it requires a change to Students’ Association policy we’ll support you in taking this to Student Council. Student Council is where students come together to discuss proposals and vote on them. These happen on the last Thursday of each month during semester. We also have funding available to support student-led activities, events and projects on campus, you can find out more about these at eusa.ed.ac.uk/FindFunding.
STAND IN THE STUDENT ELECTIONS! We know that not all students will know what our reps do and how to make the best use of them, so here’s a handy Q&A with Diva Mukherji, your elected Vice President Education.

DIVA MUKHARJI (She/Her) Students’ Association Vice President Education Diva coordinates and leads campaigns and projects in relation to all elements of the academic experience, including learning and teaching, academic facilities, quality assurance and enhancement, university academic policy and processes.
What is Academic Representation and why do I need it?
Academic Representation is super important so we can improve your experience here at Edinburgh! Programme and School Reps are here to work with the University and the Students’ Association so we can ensure that your concerns are being heard and addressed.
What kind of projects or campaigns have the Academic Reps been working on?
In the past, Academic Reps have been working on a variety of projects; from campaigning for lecture recordings to better feedback processes. This year, we’re highlighting the importance of diversifying the curriculum, and centring student voices and opinions in academic developments!
If I have a problem on my course, or an idea to make things better for students, where do I go?
If you have a problem on your course, speak to your Programme Rep. Or if you want to raise an issue which affects all students in your School, contact your School Rep. We also have an amazing Representation and Democracy Team at the Students’ Association who have a wealth of knowledge, and then there’s me! #YouVotedWeacted This year, the University announced it would be divesting from Fossil Fuels. Ollie Glick, Students’ Association Vice President Community (2017/18) gives a little insight into the role student campaigners and the Students’ Association played in bringing about this massive win.
A
As you arrive at this amazing and varied university, you’ll come to love bits of it, and other bits, not so much. Students need to be able to shape their university environment, and that is where your Association, and collective power come in!
“Don’t think you can’t make a difference here — whatever you’re passionate about, go out and change it while you’re here!”
An inspiring example of this is your Uni’s big money investments in fossil fuels, that is, oil gas, coal and tar sands. 5 years ago, a huge amount of us wanted to see Edinburgh pull their money out of companies involved in these fuels. Marches and protests occurred, alongside constructive discussion with key Uni decision makers. They agreed to ‘divest’ (take the money out of) from coal and tar, but not oil and gas. This year, students, led by your elected Officers and People and Planet Society members, re-entered talks with the University, and building off years of student activism, successfully agreed full divestment. This wasn’t just a huge win for our students, but it also sparked other big Unis in the UK to start doing the same! Don’t think you can’t make a difference here — whatever you’re passionate about, go out and change it while you’re here! ■
