2010 - 2011 GAIRO VECCHIA SARDEGNA ITALY

THE OLD AND THE NEW GAIRO

Old Gairo is a tiny village of the 1 2 0 0 A . D . p e r c h e d o n t h e R i o P a rd u v a l l e y. T h e p r e c a r i o u s h y d r o logical asset of the area made the old Gairo a ghost town. Various devastating alluvial events, created by several issues such as the erosion of the ground no longer protected by its vegetation which has become rare or even disappeared due to the intense work of deforestation and the unpunished arson, forced its population to abandon the site moving on an upper area w e r e t h e n e w G a i r o e x i s t t o d a y. The inhabitant of the ghost town still feel a strong attachment to the abandoned place and their old life and often they visit it using their abandoned homes as animals shelters.

The church of Santa Elena was built in 1920 on a forgotten ceme t e r y. I t s a u s t e r e p r e s e n c e w a s conceived from local craftsmen with traditional techniques handed from father to son that even today in spite of its major deterioration, the church is still testifying the very traditional old-fashioned work that endures over time. T h i s c h u r c h r e p r e s e n t a n i m p o rtant reference point for the inhabitant of the villages of old and new Gairo not able to use it anymore because of its compromised structure. This restoration has been executed with the traditional methods of construction. With this restoration it is hoped that the population of Gairo can regain some of its lost history.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN BOTANICAL 2011

The Botanical farm for the territory of Urzulei in Sardegna is based on developing the concept of “terroir” promoted by one of the UNESCO program. The definition for such place is based on its delineated geographical characteristics but also on how human community engaged with the land along history, creating a certain distinctive and unique cultural asset. This interaction between the natural environment and human factors can be defined as a biocultural heritage that is promoted by the project of the Botanical garden. This concept develops the possibility of reengaging with what is lost about an ancient culture and its peculiar way of cultivating the land, through the creation of specific equipped spaces for artisan activities and for the reactivation of the land cultivating endemic species once part of locals’ life and diet.
